A Message from the President
As we look forward to Spring weather my thoughts always jump to children and all the beautiful weather and getting outside. Seeing them running around the Club for Easter and all of us enjoying some more approachable weather for outdoor activities. So, I’m going to concentrate on a couple of children and Member activities we are working on to help you relax and relish in the lap of luxury your Club provides.
Short Course and Op 36:
I hope everyone is excited about the opening of the Short Course this month. This 9-hole course is intended to give our Membership another amenity to enjoy. This course will also be a great way for our golfers to improve their all-important short game in a fun fashion The holes will be varying distances from 40-160 yards and some of them will be tricky but that is golf
Once the course is open for Member play, we will explain the rules of play There will be a bit of a learning curve for the tee times and course time management It will be a fun new toy to help brush off the winter rust our clubs have developed This Short Course will surely show our game's flaws if you played as little golf as I did over the winter Luckily, we have a handy fix for that problem Operation 36 is the perfect way to knock some strokes off your handy cap and stop being so frustrated by those pesky 3 putts and skulled chips. It will also make it so much more fun to do your “homework” by playing the Short Course. New classes are open for registration now so sign up because they sell out fast!
Easter:
Easter at Royal Oaks is so much fun for children of all ages. Last year we had 254 adults, and 183 children attend, and everyone had a phenomenal time. The children had Easter egg hunts, games, face painters, balloon artists, and the famous petting zoo. The adults enjoyed the children’s glee as they ran from activity to activity while sipping a Mimosa or Bloody Mary on our beautiful Activities’ lawn A lavish buffet is then served at your reserved table around the pool And Grandparents, invite the whole family as it will be one of the most memorable experiences you all will ever have and the Club does all the work So don’t forget to sign up to come on out to take your picture with the Easter Bunny and have a great time!
Tot Stop:
We are looking to improve the Member experience at our Tot Stop With more activities and more staff available during peak times to keep your Tots entertained. To that end, Royal Oaks is now searching for a Youth Director to enhance our family activities across the Club. So, they would not only manage the Tot Stop but would also work with staff in tennis, golf, swimming, etc. on creating fun family activities for you all to enjoy. This process may take some time to find the right person so be patient, but we wanted to give you the exciting news.
Well, that is it for now. Thank you for taking the time to read about the exciting new things going on at your Club. Get out and enjoy this beautiful weather because before we know it the heat of Summer will be here.
Allison Zuber Royal Oaks Country Club PresidentThe Ladies Association has expanded our monthly Themed Happy Hours to recognize women who have made a difference. Join us to keep up with your friends while meeting new friends. Chef and his staff always prepare just the right food to fit the theme. Adding women of note adds an extra flair.
Speaking of Chef, that long sought-after cooking class came to fruition. Well, it will have after this article has gone to print. Watch for photos in a future issue.
Julie Gray is arranging more field trips as well as transportation Be sure to check your weekly emails and the club app for information and sign up as plans are finalized. Julie has just stepped down from organizing the Bingo/Bunko games. The Bring a Buddy to Bingo was a well-attended and fun evening.
The Book Club continues to meet just prior to each monthly Happy Hour Upcoming reads will be “Carmel Conundrum” on March 29th by Stacy (Edick) Wilder, “The Book Woman’s Daughter” by Kim Michele Richardson on April 26th, “These Precious Days: Essays” by Ann Patchett is scheduled for May 31st, Kate Quinn’s “The Diamond Eye” for June 28th and Barbara Kingsolver’s “Demon Copperhead” for August 30th. There won’t be a July meeting. We are again delighted to announce that our ROCCLA member, Stacy (Edick) Wilder, has graciously agreed to come to talk about her recent books at the March 29th meeting. All are welcome to join in anytime
The two Bridge groups, the Mexican Train group, Lunch Bunch, and the MahJongg Group all remain active and vibrant. The recent MahJongg lessons have added an additional 7 women ready to join in.
The Royal Recipe Ladies continues to flourish thanks to the attention to detail provided by Aileen Hansen. It must be contagious as each gathering gets more and more over the top in the food and fun category. Gigi Scott hosted the February Creole-themed luncheon, opening her home to a twice as a normal-sized group. All of the women arrived with delicious food they prepared and shared those recipes and knowledge Gigi livened up the luncheon by having Mardi Gras beads tossed from the balcony, themed music, and even a second-line dance around her beautiful home just as we were ready to take a nap from eating such delicacies. Maureen Singleton is hosting the March gathering of Royal Tea, perfect for Royal Recipe Ladies A tough act to follow but no doubt Maureen is up for that challenge.
You can keep up with our many events on the Club Calendar, watch for Friday’s ROCCLA email, the Quick Links on the Club app, and follow us on Facebook. The Executive Committee and Committee Chairs have planned many ROCCLA Happy Hours and events. Suggestions of activities are always welcomed to keep all our members assured of a great experience with our vibrant group. PURE SPEED
Since golfers have an overwhelming interest in gaining more distance, let’s cover key concepts and drills for one of the main components of distance; speed. Improving speed, i.e., moving faster, is an untapped resource for many golfers because most golfers are not using the speed they already possess. When you understand and apply today’s speed concepts and drills, you will likely see an increase in club head speed.
Power is achieved when force + velocity + distance/time is applied Simply, force represents strength, velocity is the speed of force applied across time over a distance or range of movement Time and speed of force applied is why we use longer clubs and go into deep ranges to get more distance Therefore, a body that possesses strength + speed + mobility can create power on the golf course
To increase your untapped speed you must focus on speed only Mixing goals doesn’t work for speed due to the neurological components Speed requires intention from the brain and is controlled mostly by the nerves within the joint capsule that connects/communicate through the white tissue (fascia, ligaments) and red tissue (fast twitch muscle fibers) Therefore, joint capsule integrity is a prerequisite.
In drills and performance, the intention to move fast not hard results in an efficient speed or the fastest way to move from point A to point B. The nervous system gives permission to move fast and becomes efficient when it becomes familiar and feels safe. And training speed can push your top-end speed higher which also results in a faster cruising speed.
Club head speed is gained through efficient sequencing and coordination across all the body’s levers from the feet through to the hands We all admire the smooth and easy swings that appear beautifully efficient and fast By contrast, weak or slow links in the chain can slow down the total speed A “speed leak” happens when a specific area doesn’t allow velocity to build or doesn’t pass along the velocity to the next segment However, training specific tissue in these areas can remediate those leaks
Today’s lesson contains mobility preparation and a simple speed drill that builds arm chopping and wrist forearm speed Joint integrity is a pre-requisite for speed training so you can access the nervous system and train without injury Be sure to move safely without pain when doing any exercises or drills. Always prepare your joints before doing speed.
Check out the VIDEO of these two moves inside BODY ROCC on Facebook. Members can join the private group for Sports Club and Spa content here: https://www facebook com/groups/BODYROCC
Shoulder Mobility Prep
Brace your body as shown and move your arms to their greatest outer limits possible with no pain As you move across the front of your body, externally rotate your shoulders and elbows Internally rotate your shoulders and elbows as you move behind your body Reverse the circular motion moving from back to front Focus on contracting at the closing side of the shoulder and feeling the stretch across the opening side of the joint
Arm Chopping and Wrist Towel Pop
Warm up your body as you would for any workout Then, using speed as your intention, chop a medium-sized towel across your body high to low about 4 - 5 times as fast as you can. Reverse the direction moving from low to high. Use both arms. Rest for 5 - 10 minutes then repeat the drill if desired.
Move fast to be fast is a true concept! Arm chopping and wrist release motions are the third and fourth portions of the chain of motion in the golf swing. You will hear or see the towel pop when you transfer speed through the body. Upper body chopping is known to be quite slow in most amateurs so try this drill and let me know about your increasing speed There are many other great techniques that work so reach out if you need more assistance

Watching what you put into your body, how much activity you get, and your weight is important for keeping your body working well Positive physical habits have helped decrease my stress and increase my energy I always contend that ‘Balance’ is key
We always need to focus on what makes our lives better Fitness helps me feel good and motivated. The important factors for me are...
Exercise regularly
Eat healthy meals
Drink water and stay hydrated
Using an app to keep track of my movement and heart rate.
Angie has designed a perfect workout for me three times a week She challenges me and keeps me motivated during training I am always confident that ‘form’ during exercises prevents injury and creates more results Angie is constantly changing the workout routine and always demonstrates the correct type of movement We focus mainly on core strength and functional strength training Angie always incorporates cardio into the workout and the sessions scream by
A healthy body allows us all to participate more in life Fitness 3-5 hours a week is easy and will generate so much mental health Golf, boating, aviation, work, and time with the kids all become so much more enjoyable when your body feels well My strong recommendation is just to try to adapt fitness into your weekly routine. Within just a few months you will see and feel significant changes.
1. 2. 3. 4.KITCHEN HAPPENINGS
Spring is right around the corner and we have some new things cooking up in the kitchen.
We’re starting off March with Truffles!
Three special evenings around the magical fungus only for the few who would have booked that event on time. But to make sure that everyone can have a taste of the real truffles, we will also offer some dishes prepared with truffles at the Bistro for a limited time.
Cooking classes have also begun Our Ladies Association secured its first cooking class at the end of February, but we have more to come for everyone During Spring break, we will welcome kids for a “Cupcake Decoration” class and later for a “Pizza” class.
When it comes to Pizza, we also have good news! Our wood-fired oven will be fired-up during the Short Course Grand Opening celebration and we will use it periodically going forward.
This month we’ll also start our new monthly “Themed Buffet Night” with Italian cuisine as our feature for March. We will pick a different theme every month. It could be a region, a country, or a particular product…so keep an eye on your electronic mailboxes for our notifications and updates.
On March 25, Chef Darrian and Chef Robert will battle during our annual Crawfish Cook-Off bringing hot flavors from Texas and Louisiana to your palate.
And do not forget to come out and celebrate Easter with us at the Club or order your meal “to-go” Full packages or “a la carte” orders will be available.
As always, I’m looking forward to welcoming you during your next visit to the Club!

We are crossing into the second quarter of the new year, and for Houston that means the sunshine is coming out again and the temperature is rising. A lot of wine drinkers’ palettes are changing as well; I know mine does I find myself shifting away from the big, bold, and hearty reds and into a lighter and more refreshing white wine. Something that keeps your mouth watering and yearning for another sip like Pinot Grigio, Chenin Blanc, or Sauvignon Blanc. For me that wine is Sancerre.
Sancerre has had a meteoric rise in popularity over the last few years. The wine has taken the world by storm with its refreshing acidity and unique minerality definitive of the Sancerre town in the Loire Valley of France. For those unfamiliar, Sancerre is one of the most well-known regions in France and maybe the world, that produces Sauvignon Blanc The region’s limestone hills deliver richly textured Sauvignon Blanc wines with ripe gooseberry aromas, bracing acidity, and flinty-smoke flavors. One of the most popular food pairings for Sancerre is goat cheese, and if you have the chance to go to France, from the city of Chavignol located a few miles away from Sancerre
The Royal Oaks wine menu has seen a change recently regarding the Sancerre offered by the glass: Domaine Thomas et Fils ‘Le Pierrier’. What makes this Sauvignon Blanc from Domaine Thomas stand out is the lush fruit character and texture achieved in the vineyards. Full and developed fruit flavors of citrus, grapefruit, crisp green apple, and wildflowers resonant from the glass. With great texture, a classic minerality lingers through the finish with crushed rock and refined herbal notes
The next time you’re at the club and want a deliciously refreshing glass of Sancerre wine, look to the Domaine Thomas ‘Le Pierrier’.

ROCC SOCIAL SCENE
2023 is in full swing and we have a wonderful spring calendar planned for you! Kicking off the season is our new Truffle Dinner, which will be an annual event and one that you will not want to miss One of Chef Olivier’s favorite things is to create these special 7-course tasting menus, so if you haven’t attended one yet, you are missing out!
On Sunday, March 5th, we are hosting a Short Course Grand Opening event, which will also include officially introducing our new Head Golf Pro, Ryan Miller, as well as the launch of our new Pizza Oven! We will have a golf exhibition with a couple of our members that have played on the PGA Tour, the new Head Pro Ryan, and our GM, Dave Altemus Afterward, join us at the fire pits to enjoy fresh pizza from the new wood-burning pizza oven!
In March, we are starting our new monthly ROCC Themed Thursdays in the Bistro and Versailles Room. Each month there will be a new themed cuisine, along with fun entertainment, and March’s feature is Italian Cuisine! During Spring Break, we have a couple of kid’s events planned with a cupcake decorating class and a pizza cooking class for the older kids. Wrapping up March is our Annual Crawfish Cookoff where two of our Sous Chefs go head to head for your vote of the best crawfish, followed by the popular Sunday Yappy Hour.
In April we will host an adult cooking class with Chef Olivier, which we will begin offering several times throughout the year. Of course, Easter falls in April, which means one of our favorite events is back with the Easter Egg Hunt! We will hide around 4,000 Easter eggs for this event! Another staple at this event is the petting zoo, and you can’t leave without having your photo taken with the Easter Bunny This event is hosted on Saturday so that we can have the traditional Easter Brunch on Easter Sunday Don’t worry, the Easter Bunny will join us for Sunday Brunch as well!
Closing out April is another annual event, ROCC’n the Range, which will feature a new band this year, Mango Punch! They are a super high-energy band and so much fun! If you haven’t been in the past, this is one of two events in the year where we close the Driving Range and host the event on the range a rare opportunity!
As you can see, we have so many fun things planned for the spring and are working on a few more additional events as well, so be on the lookout for those “pop-up” events coming later!

GREENS UPDATE
Unlike last winter, we did not receive our first cold snap of the year the first week of February instead we experienced a deep freeze the week of Christmas. Those cold temperatures earlier in the year provided us with an earlier dormancy period than the previous two years. However, as is common in January here we received enough warm days to follow to allow the fairways to bounce back and get some of their colors back. As I write this, we are currently in a stint of 12 days straight with forecasted highs of 75 degrees or better. This is a welcome sign that Spring is around the corner and the turf should begin to outgrow its winter look.
In the coming weeks, we will be completing our annual cutbacks of ornamental plantings around the Club and course. During this time, we will begin lowering the heights in the rough. This gradual lowering of heights is important this time of year to allow ample sunlight to the lower canopy and promote improved shoot growth
The remainder of the spring will be very similar to that of years past with increased cultural practices and fertility applications to the golf course. Drainage repair and enhancements are continuing over the next couple of months along with landscape refurbishments in select areas. To cap off the month of April we will be completing our first greens aerification of the year. This aerification is scheduled for Monday, April 17 through Wednesday, April 19. Please be sure to mark your calendars during this important time. This will again be the smaller tines that were used last year and should cause only some disruption to the putting surface for the following weeks.
We in the Golf Course Maintenance Department look forward to seeing you out here this spring and are always here working to provide you with the best conditions possible for your next round of golf
Golf Course Superintendent - Cody Alexander calexander@royaloakscc.comANNUAL PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW
The final week of January is an important time in the golf industry It is when Orlando hosts the annual PGA Merchandise Show This is an opportunity for those who work in the industry to get together, share ideas, and view all the latest equipment, technology, clothing lines and almost anything you can think of that is related to golf, all in one place It is also a perfect time to attend some educational events.
This year Robert Scott, Shang Huang, Pam Owens, Dave Altemus, and myself all attended the Show and we brought back some wonderful ideas that will help the membership immediately and in the very near future.
Teaching Technology:
Capto Putting Analysis System – We have some exciting technology additions planned for the MAC, but we had been looking for the right piece of technology to bring in to help players with their putting We found the perfect tool in the Capto putting analysis platform The Capto sensor attaches to the putter shaft and allows your Coach to asses over 30 different parameters within your putting stroke This will be a valuable addition not only to help with putting instruction but also putter fitting. Capto Golf | The Best Putting Analysis System
3D Swing Analysis – Over the past 12 months there have been several new players emerge that provide 3D swing analysis from your mobile device. This is a significant development over the previous systems that required sensors to be attached to the body or for the player to wear a harness with wires that attached back to the computer platform We looked at each of these platforms and after some due diligence came to the conclusion that they are not accurate enough yet to put into use with the membership As with all technology, this platform is certain to improve and we will continue to watch its development closely, with the plan to add it to our offerings as soon as we believe it is accurate enough. Sportsbox AI
Education:
Shang Huang invested many hours attending educational events during her week in Orlando She attended several presentations from the LPGA as well as completed the Level 1 certification from the Titleist Performance Institute The TPI Level 1 teaches the foundational concepts behind the Body-Swing Connection. Shang is now able to quickly evaluate a player’s physical readiness using TPI’s physical assessment screen and how the results of that assessment are correlated to the player’s swing characteristics.
Robert Scott and Derek Hooper attended several seminars that covered topics from the Latest Trends in Teaching Studios, Teaching with 3D, and The Business Value of Golf Instruction They also invested two full days at a Teaching Education event with Top 100 teachers Mike Adams and Terry Rowles This event focused on how a few key body measurements can lead to the most efficient swing shape and putting motion for each player If you see Robert and Derek using a tape measure on players, this is what they are doing
Registration is OPEN for the Spring Semester of Operation 36.
This 8-week semester will start on Saturday, April 1, and will continue to the first week of June. These classes fill quickly, so if you would like to join, please register soon. A flyer with all the relevant information is up on the website.

The Professional Staff is gearing up for a great year and looking forward to seeing everyone out in full force as the weather continues to improve.
Our Operation 36 program continues to have great success and each semester fills up very quickly as it is the best way to prepare those golfers wanting to take up the game of golf from the ground up and help you become comfortable with the golf operation all the way to those golfers wanting to take your game to the next level.
