MONTHLY COMPETITION Congrats to our monthly winners. It was a close run thing in this months voting with the top places changing right up to the last minute. However we did have one overall winner, as seen on the front cover, and three in joint second place. Here’s what David has to say about his ‘Misty Beach’. You will also find we have featured his gallery this month so more misty beach shots there to enjoy too. Not being one who finds it easy to get up early, I rarely manage to find any decent light for landscape photography. I'm usually found looking for high key, minimalist images indoors. So I was in my element when I came across this beach with thick mist rolling in from the sea. I just loved the way it masked all the detail, subdued all the colours and was changing all the time. It was 2:30 in the afternoon and I took about 60 shots before I was dragged away to complete our walk along the coast. David Pearson ARPS

SoFoBoMo REMINDER Month before last we bought to your attention this fun idea of a 30 day challenge. As it starts in July it seemed a good idea to remind you all. If some of you do decide to do this challenge then please let us know and give us your book urls. Then when you finish perhaps in the September DIG News we will link out to all your online books so members can enjoy your work. www.sofobomo.com

TRAINING VIDEOS New from Ken this past month. First an interesting discovery he made about NIK – we shared this on the DIG Facebook page but thought that perhaps some of you will have missed it there, so will reprint here. Greetings Members if you downloaded the free Nik Collection Filters from DxO you would have had to submit your email address. This was so they could send you info about their DxO Raw Collection Suite. Like me you will now receive an email about their new Nik Collection of filters for an introductory price of £39.99 if ordered before the 1st July. Out of curiosity I downloaded the Nik Filters and installed on a 30 day trial thinking they would be a lot different. Well, they weren’t, so do not waste your money and stick with your free version they are exactly the same set. The only disadvantage with the free version is you have to open them from FILE > AUTOMATE > NIK COLLECTION FILTERS. Opening them from FILTERS > NIK COLLECTION will crash out Photoshop CC 2018 and Elements 2018. The other disadvantage is there is no plugin for Lightroom, which is in the paid version. This is not a problem as you use Photoshop CC instead. Until DxO come up with something better I am sticking with the free version of Nik Filters. Best regards Ken.

This is a short video I made today to show you how to correct colour using curves. Never think an image is correct in colour until you check out the numbers. This only applies to normal lighting conditions and not neccessarly sunsets or sunrises as values here would be much warmer.

And a tutorial that isn’t from Ken but one we thought you might find useful. This shows you how to remove anything from a photo using Photoshop.

AN OVERSEAS MEMBER This month we have some beautiful work to show you from a member, Pat Brennen LRPS, who lives in Ballyragget, Kilkenny. …… I discovered digital photography later in my life and in 2007 joined Kilkenny Photographic Society (KPS) which is my local camera club in the “sunny” southeast of Ireland. In 2011 I worked toward and got my Licentiateship with the Irish Photographic Federation LIPF and followed that in 2013 when I got my LRPS. Digital photography has given me a greater appreciation of the outdoors and nature. It takes me to a place where time flies and what has been hours seem only like minutes have passed as I search for insects as in ‘Snacktime’ or waiting for the sunset/sunrise as in ‘Stepping Stones’. Creating a still life your mind can run free as in ‘Wilting for a sweet’. Recently I have found a new challenge and enjoyment in photographing people as in ‘Mischka’,

Snack Time I am now a member of Portlaoise Camera Club as well as KPS. The two clubs give me further opportunity to meet new people and scout new places to continue my photography journey. Club membership gives exciting challenges completing assignments, mastering technical aspects and of course the comradery among the wonderful friends, that I have made through photography. More recently I received a AFIAP award, which I found very satisfying as I perceived it as recognition for a hobby which I thoroughly enjoy doing. Into the future I look forward to many more years of enjoying photography .

A UK MEMBER Mary Thompson is a DIG Member living in Cumbria so too far for her to go to DIG meetings, so we invited her to contribute to DIG News and show us some of her work. I was 65 when I got my first digital compact and discovered I loved taking and making pictures. When I got my first DSLR in 2010 my photographic journey began in earnest. This year I changed my beloved Canon for a smaller lighter Fuji XT20.

One of my treasured books sums up my photography – “The Tao of Photography - Seeing beyond Seeing" (Philippe Gross and S.I. Shapiro: 2001). For me, photographing means quietude, peaceful absorption in seeing and, in making my picture, experiencing a meditative presence in the ‘now'. I taught myself through curiosity and lots of mistakes. By 2015 I realised that my skills were haphazard and my ‘solo' photography rather dilettante. I found an online OU/RPS course but then I broke my back and spent a year literally finding my feet. In Autumn 2016 I embarked on the 10 challenging, rich weekly sessions. In addition to practical skills, I learned to slow down and exercise self-discipline! My EMA mark encouraged me to begin working for LRPS, which I am finding demanding but exhilarating. My first advisory day was a nourishing experience, listening, looking, and realising I wanted to be part of a group. I joined Copeland Photographic Society, a small, friendly group with whom I have learned a lot.

“I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed. Garry Winogrand. I tend to notice small things (with the exception of urban architecture and cathedrals!). I am drawn to dusty dereliction, details, and to pattern, form, and structure. Now, through preparation for LRPS, I am expanding my view and broadening my focus. Mary Thompson West Cumbria June 2018
