We are steadily approaching more café sessions and advisory days: The Café sessions you may have noticed have changed format slightly in that we are able to offer a guiding hand in preparation to submission of an advisory day, check the details on the RPS webpage. The Regional AGM was held in April at the National Media Museum, members’ representation was sparse and this is a great disappointment as the RPS is a member’s organisation. It is certainly with that in mind we rely heavily upon member involvement. The trustees canceled the scheduled Advisory Board Meeting in March this was due to a review of the Society’s Governance. There is subsequently to be a report on the role of the Advisory Board within the context of a wider review of the Society’s governance, then possibly two separate Advisory Board meetings, one for Group representatives and one for Regional representatives to be held late Spring early Summer.

LRPS Advisory Day at NRM On 6th March 2016, around a dozen or so photographers attended an advisory day at the National Railway Museum, York. The numbers were a little lower than usual for such an event, but it was Mothers’ Day. This unfortunate clash may have been the reason for no female photographers booking in for their LRPS advice - no doubt they’d found somewhere even more exotic than the Railway Museum, even though the Flying Scotsman was there for them. Then again, perhaps the ladies are already way in front when it comes to standards see the ‘Doncaster Ladies’ article on page 3 and images at www.issuu.com . As the Advisory Day started, one chap asked if he could be first, or as soon as possible, because his ‘missis was waiting for him’. Hence the only partially full lecture theatre shown in the photographs. Fortunately, this did allow some in depth discussions and an early finish, leaving time for those who wanted to say ‘hello’ to the Scotsman to do so. The majority remained and after a quick lunch break, they were treated to a viewing of the panel previously submitted for ARPS by Graham Staples. The 15 images demonstrated Graham’s passion for railway and steam, although he did admit that some of the shots were ‘slightly staged’ as he knew some of the drivers and had asked them to whistle before emerging from a tunnel, or prior to some other photogenic show of smoke and steam. So, for those who like all aspects of steam railway monochrome photography, you missed a treat.

Photography Day - RAF Linton-on-Ouse. On the 9th March, 2016, despite constant heavy rain, the photography trip to RAF Linton on Ouse proved to be a very enjoyable day in both terms of photography and being able to access some fascinating modern and historical objects, some of which are shown below. Photography was allowed in the control tower, the aircraft workshops and the History Room - and even outside, if you didn’t mind getting wet.

Got something interesting happening? Please let us know and we’ll try to include it in a future Newsletter, or write your own report and email it in.

Know of any photography exhibitions near you? Please let us have venues, dates, websites, contact details, etc and we’ll try to visit and report back in the Newsletter.

Thanks were given to the officers who showed us around the base, the retired officers who told us some of the history of the base - and especially to the chefs and waiters in the officers’ mess for providing such a wonderful hearty lunch. It is hoped that another visit will be arranged later in the year and attendance is highly recommended and anyone who may be interested should keep up with the website and Newsletter. Photographs provided by Mary Crowther, Brian Crossland and David Richardson.

Sheffield Photographic Society - Annual Print Exhibition. As mentioned in the March 2016 edition of this Newsletter, this event took place at Sheffield Cathedral from Monday 11th to Sunday 17th April 2016. The event was officially introduced by the Society’s President, Elizabeth Pickering, and opened by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain. The exhibits were selected from the members’ submissions by Anne Miles FRPS MPAGB EFIAP FBPE.

The Exhibition was an opportunity to see an excellent range of photographic skills across a broad range of topics as the two example boards, above, attempt to illustrate. It was also an opportunity to view the Cathedral which houses many splendours of architectural heritage, not least the windows - the coloured lights from which are impossible to avoid, especially when the Sun is out. It was a treat to see the ceremonial scissors - stainless steel, made in Sheffield, with gold plated handles.

The 37th Frame - Tour de Yorkshire 29th April to 1st May - Over the Bank Holiday weekend, many people turned out to watch this, now, annual spectacular. Here are a couple of pictures - the front 7 just leaving High Melton, entering Cadeby Lane, followed by all riders, plus support cars.

The last bit, squeezed in at the end. When using 36 exposure films, it was expected that a Yorkshireman would manage to get at least one more frame out of the film.
