HISTORY OF CANNABIS

HISTORY OF CANNABIS

The Hashish Club What if we told you that there was a secret order forged in the fires of 18th century France. A collective of intellectual elite, who became defenders of idyllic values such as heroism, inspiration and subjectivity? And, together, its members would wield a tool so powerful; its use spans the decades.

After trying hash, Moreau realised its effects on the mind might help him dig deeper into the human psyche. However, to truly explore its effects, he would need a group of willing volunteers whom he could observe and document— in steps acquaintance Theophile Gautier. Gautier began forming a secret creed—the Assassins Club, or Club Des Hashischins (Club of the hash-eaters). In the height of the Romantic era, the out of body experience provided by highly concentrated doses of hash syrup (a traditional method Moreau had picked up on his travels) attracted a vast array of literary and intellectual figures. Members included writer Alexandre Dumas, and poets Victor Hugo and Charles Baudelaire.

18th century Europe was in a time of incredible change. In the wake of Napoleon’s reign, and in reaction to the Industrial Revolution, people sought more than a focus on material goods, wealth, and status. They yearned for something purer, a focus on heroism and the power to inspire. These values would become the cornerstone of the Romantic Era, a period of renewed emphasis on arts, music, literature and the power of emotion.

The latter was a long-standing member, whos experiences with hash, alcohol and opium culminated in “The Hashish Poem”, a sprawling reflection on the effects of hash. You can find Baudelaire’s work online, and we highly recommend you give it a read. As for the fate of the Assassin’s Club? Well, officially it is no more, but when the time comes, and society needs its hash savour once more, who knows...

Fascinated by this movement and stories of mind-altering substances from the east, psychiatrist Dr Moreau travelled to Egypt, Syria and Asia Minor. Here he discovered the artefact in question—cannabis.

INTERVIEW

Hello, my name is Adrián, also known as Yoidi Ganjah Zone. I’m mainly a marijuana lover, and I’ve been a YouTuber for 3 years. You can find me on social networks like Instagram or Facebook. I also get featured on various websites. I live in the Canary Islands (Spain). Here, almost everyone grows for recreational or medicinal purposes. The weather is very good, and we follow the agricultural techniques and permaculture. I’ve been growing plants in general for as long as I can remember; I’ve always loved nature and our planet—that’s why I only grow organic.

Why did you decide to start growing organically? I started growing organic for the simple reason that the plant is natural and should be treated as such. It also tastes quite different compared to chemical cultivation.

Yoidi tells us all about his experience with organic growing. Being a YouTuber, he uses his channel to provide his audience with marijuana content: from tips on growing to strain reviews.

because the plant won’t grow as it should. The same goes for water, pH, and EC. If I irrigate water with the wrong pH and EC, a lot can happen, but among many things, it could lead to a blockage where the plant can’t get the nutrients in the soil or the nutrients you provide them.

Where do you focus most of your attention on the grow? (Water, light, soil...) I focus mainly on all the phases of the growth cycle. But especially soil, water, pH, and EC. If we have poor soil, it will be very bad for the crop

11

INTERVIEW

What nutrients shouldn’t be missing? And how do you create your organic soil and supplements?

water, so I avoid watering with that. We can also do the same by boiling water for a few minutes; let it cool and it will be ready to use. But of course, always measure and adjust the pH and EC of the water.

Actually, you can never miss anything. But there are some nutrients that are more important than others, like nitrogen during veg, and potassium and phosphorus during bloom. I create them myself with a pot and hot water, almost boiling. We can use many natural things to turn them into a slow-absorbing or liquid fertiliser. We can even make earthworm castings at home (I add them to my soil). I always use 20% humus, 20% perlite, 30% coconut fibre, and another 30% black peat. Is using tap water at odds with organic cultivation? I always use tap water. I fill a bucket or a container with water and leave it uncovered for 24 hours to remove the chlorine and impurities in it, so to speak. The bottom of that bucket would be the “dirtiest”

How do you control organic growth indoors? What are the key factors?

YOIDI GANJAH ZONE

YOIDI_GANJAH_ZONE

YOIDI GANJAH ZONE

12

Organic growth indoors is basically the same as outdoors, but growing under an “artificial sun”. Experience and being able to familiarise yourself with growing indoors, knowing what light we can use, what pots, and what pruning or growing techniques we can use, is key. The latter also varies greatly depending on the variety you have, indica or sativa. How do you fight pests in a natural way? To fight pests, I use a repellent before they appear. I use a liquid repellent based on garlic, onion, and rosemary.

INTERVIEW

I also use a nettle-based one, although this isn’t really a repellent. Instead, it acts as an insecticide and, on top of that, provides our plants with a lot of nitrogen if we use it as a nutrient solution. Why is it important to learn about the effects of pesticides on inhalation and ingestion of cannabis products?

“There are some nutrients that are more important than others, like nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. I create them myself with a pot and hot water, almost boiling.”

If we don’t control this, it can end badly. It is our health that is at stake. Smoking puts it at stake, so imagine if we don’t control all of this more effectively. That would be disastrous. There should be more information about this because, as I said, it’s important. That’s why I support organic. MORE YOIDI?

Could cannabis help you in Sports? Whether it’s a weekly gym class or competing at the highest level, every athlete struggles with the same issues. We aren’t talking about saying no to that midweek takeaway, but about anxiety before an event, struggling to focus, poor-quality sleep, pain, and insufficient muscle recovery. The key to combating these issues and performing at your best is to keep your body in optimal condition. And, although it may sound daunting, optimal condition isn’t about doing a 5k run or 100 situps every day. Optimal condition is about supporting the processes going on inside your body; the ones that work behind the scenes to mitigate pain, manage the inflammatory response, and reduce the risk of injury. However, before we take a closer look at how we can use cannabis and CBD to support the body from within, it helps to know what we’re dealing with.

PAIN: A SENSATION ALL ATHLETES WANT TO AVOID Pain typically comes in two forms: nociceptive, and neuropathic pain. The former is the kind that makes you scream profanities when you stub your toe. It’s the result of nerves in your tissue transporting a signal of pain to the brain via the nervous system. Neuropathic pain is when damage occurs directly to the nerves, not the surrounding tissue, and is usually due to disease or excessive trauma. Assuming there are no underlying issues, it’s typically nociceptive pain that causes the most problems for athletes. Another significant issue for athletes is inflammation. It’s important to point out that the body’s inflammatory response is a necessary mechanism. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to fight off infections or repair damaged muscle fibres. However, when inflammation persists or is excessive—that’s when athletic performance can take a serious hit.

14

A P OT H E C A RY

So, the plan is simple. First, we need to combat any issues with pain before they become chronic; then, we need to support our body’s ability to repair itself while keeping our inflammatory response in check.

UNDERSTANDING THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM (ECS) In steps the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This regulatory system extends from the brain right down to the skin on our toes, and everywhere in between. Its primary function is to keep an eye on all of the different biological processes taking place via a series of receptors. If required, the ECS will provide support by producing beneficial endocannabinoids such as anandamide (AEA) or 2-AG (2-arachidonoylglycerol). Sometimes though, the ECS needs a hand to get things moving. That’s where the star of our industry, Cannabis sativa, makes its debut. Not only can it be consumed in a variety of ways, but it’s packed full of dozens of chemical compounds called cannabinoids. What makes cannabinoids unique is their ability to activate our ECS, influencing its regulatory power.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THC AND CBD FOR ATHLETES Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may be well known for its potent high, but that’s not the only skill it has. Researchers have found that cannabinoid receptors linked to the ECS exist at critical locations in our central and peripheral nervous system. Studies are underway to explore how cannabinoids could be used to influence nociceptive pain and neuropathic pain. THC shows a strong analgesic effect, although a potential downside to THC-based treatments is the risk of psychotropic side effects. However, you needn’t worry, as there is an alternative. CBD functions in a similar way to THC, but rather than influencing receptors directly, it takes an indirect approach. Think of CBD like the general manager of your ECS. The cannabinoid makes sure your ECS is running efficiently while encouraging the production of AEA, a useful endocannabinoid involved in managing inflammation, pleasure, and reward. To bring this science lesson to a close, cannabis is packed full of compounds that work naturally with your body, without upsetting its balance like some prescription painkillers and anti-inflammatories. According to preliminary research and anecdotal accounts from professional athletes, it’s nature’s answer to reducing inflammation, managing sports-related pain, and helping you stay calm, relaxed, and focused.

MAKING THE MOST OF CBD For a more CBD-focused experience, try cannabis strains specifically bred to have higher concentrations of CBD, and low levels of THC. Not only will you gain the therapeutic benefit of CBD, but you can smoke or vape throughout the day without worrying about impacting productivity, or your performance at the gym. Keeping the experience firmly in the hands of CBD; oils, capsules, tinctures, and topicals are all fantastic ways to use the cannabinoid to aid recovery. While you can use the previously mentioned CBD-rich strains to make your own tincture, CBD oils from reputable producers provide a highly concentrated dose explicitly tailored to your needs. And, with CBD oils, capsules, and tinctures working to support your ECS from the inside, research suggests CBD topicals applied directly to the skin may help reduce muscle soreness and joint stiffness. Thankfully, support for the use of cannabis in sport grows by the day. Although marijuana is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), CBD was recently removed from their list of banned substances. Regardless of your age or sport, cannabis and CBD can work with your body to aid recovery and keep you performing at your best.

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Start Growing Cannabis Outdoors How about some fat, sun-drenched, and extra potent buds? Nothing beats Mother Nature when it comes to growing great cannabis. This guide will help you get a clear idea of what to look for when growing cannabis outdoors.

When to Start? In spring, when temperatures are rising and everything is getting green again, this is also when your cannabis plants will thrive.

300C

120C

Most cannabis strains do best in a sunny, southern climate. But if you live in a colder climate zone like Northern Europe, don’t panic! You can always choose strains that can survive in less than perfect conditions.

22

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Choose your Seeds

Choose a strain that fits your local climate conditions.

HARVEST MONTH When sourcing cannabis seeds to grow outdoors, check their harvest month. Reason: Mould due to rain and high humidity in autumn is our biggest enemy! As many feminized strains finish in October, the bad weather could spoil your harvest. Check weather data from past years and choose a strain that finishes on time before conditions get bad. Autoflowering strains don’t have the issue of late harvests as they grow faster and finish earlier, no matter the amount of light hours they get.

I N D I C A O R S AT I VA To Northern European growers: Try to choose indica-dominant strains that finish in late September or early October. They can better handle the colder and harsher environments. Southern European growers: Sativa strains often take a few weeks longer to finish flowering, which pushes harvest further into autumn. This makes them more suitable for hot and dry climates.

23

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Choose your seeds

W H AT A B O U T S I Z E? Feminized photoperiod strains can reach 2–3m in height; most autoflowers will stay below 1m. If you’re not restricting the root ball with a planting pot, this will encourage the biggest outdoor plants. Compact autoflowering plants are easier to hide among natural vegetation and urban environments.

FINDING A PROMISING SPOT Balconies facing south are a good option. Roof terraces are great as your plants can get many hours of sunlight. Think of places in your garden where your plants will blend in and receive a lot of direct sunlight. Choose a spot where you can shelter them from harsh conditions such as strong winds and rain. Greenhouses ensure low visibility and aren’t overly expensive. Growing in pots comes in handy here as they allow you to move the plants around. When planting directly in soil, roots can go very deep into the ground. If they find a good enough waterbed, the plant can survive unattended through a very hot and dry summer.

24

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Germinating Cannabis seeds need three things to sprout: warmth, moisture, and darkness. Minimise the amount of seed handling so you don’t accidentally damage them.

Choose your Germination method G L A S S O F W AT E R M E T H O D Fill a glass half-full with room-temperature water. Drop in your seeds. After 3–5 days, you should see tiny white root tips appear. Once these roots reach 2–3mm in length, transfer your seeds to prepared soil pots. The soil pots will require small holes (roughly 5–10mm deep).

25

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Germinating

WET KITCHEN TOWEL METHOD For this you can use a few pieces of kitchen towel, coffee filters, or cotton wool pads. Over a flat surface like a plate, place your seeds on a piece of damp kitchen towel, giving each seed some personal space. Place another piece of damp towel on top. Both pieces should be damp, not wet. Cover the kitchen towel “sandwich” with another plate to create good conditions for seeds to sprout. When the white root tips reach 2–3mm, move the seeds to soil pots.

P L A N T I N G D I R E C T LY I N T O S O I L Fill your pots with good-quality potting soil! Make a hole roughly 10–15mm deep in each. Take your seeds from their package and place them into the holes. Loosely cover the seeds with soil. You can spray some water to moisten the holes before you plant each seed. After 4–10 days, you should see your seedlings sprout.

26

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Germinating

USING ROCKWOOL BLOCKS Soak the rockwool blocks in water with a low pH. Afterwards, place them in a plastic tray with a lid. The dome of the plastic container will create a mini tropical climate for your seeds. Your seeds should germinate in one to two days. Two or three weeks after germination, you can transplant your seedlings into soil or can take on the challenge of hydroponics.

R O YA L Q U E E N S E E D S S TA RT E R K IT Fill the container with one litre of lukewarm water. Pour in the packet of Bacto enzyme. The seed tray only needs to be immersed for 5–10 seconds. Poke a 10–15mm-deep hole into the soil of each pot and delicately place your seeds inside. Get your propagator ready by adding a layer of perlite. Place your seed tray in the propagator, adjust the walls, and position the lid. After 1–7 days, the seeds should have sprouted. Once the seedling is 3cm tall, transfer it to your final growing medium.

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Prepare your Growing medium Basic rule when buying soils: Don’t be cheap! Only use good quality organic soil. Soil with “light” or low nutrition is best for cannabis, especially for seedlings.

Pro tip: You do not need all the fertilisers and additives that exist. Save your money!

Indoor pre-vegetation You can also start your cannabis plants indoors—this has some advantages. Low nighttime temperatures, frost, and storms can harm seedlings in spring (April and May). Indoors, you can control the environment. Place your seedlings on a sunny windowsill or use fluorescent lights. Position the fluorescent lights about 15cm from your wseeds. Once your seedling has its first proper leaves (those with jagged edges), you can move the lights as close as 5cm. After two weeks, you can move the plants outdoors. If seedlings need support, prop them up with a toothpick or a cocktail stick and some soft gardening wire. Seedlings like high humidity, ideally around 70% RH, and temperatures in the 20–24°C range. Make sure the medium is wet but not waterlogged. A hand sprayer for watering can be helpful!

28

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Transplanting seedlings The most common reason for seedlings to stretch and topple over is light deprivation. Poor thing! But no worries, you can transplant your seedling.

Dig a bigger hole in another pot and replant the seedling deeper. You can bury most of the overgrown stem.

The right time to transplant your seedlings is just before they outgrow their current container.

It’s best to wait until the medium in the small pot is dry before going for a transplant. Wet soil can fall apart.

Gently slide the plant, roots first, into the large container. Replace the lost topsoil or coco with a handful or two over top and add a little more water.

A first and final transplant is normally the best option for autoflowering strains with a short life cycle.

29

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Watering Many novice growers, and even some so-called “experts”, tend to overwater their plants. If it takes several minutes for water to drain, and/or if it takes longer than 3–4 days for your soil to dry out, it’s likely you have a drainage issue: Consider replanting. The water and nutrient requirements of your plants will change as they grow and develop. You’ll likely water a small plant every 2–3 days, as opposed to once per day with a rapidly maturing plant.

#1 R U L E F O R P R O P E R WAT E R I N G Water less often, but when you do, water well. Drench the entire medium completely, but wait to do so until the soil is dry.

30

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

How to tell if your plants are thirsty DROOPING, WEAK PLANTS If your cannabis plants are very thirsty, they will droop. Know that slightly underwatering your plants is always better than overwatering. If you water thirsty, otherwise healthy plants, they should normally recover their appearance in a couple of hours.

CHECK THE SOIL

BETTER METHOD

First, stick your finger about 4–5cm deep into the soil. If it feels dry, it might be time to water.

Lift and weigh the pot. If the pot with the plant feels very light, you know you can water.

Pro tip: Don’t leave your plants sitting in runoff. Drainage trays catch runoff, but should immediately be emptied after collection to avoid creating a breeding ground for bacteria, pests, and mould.

31

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

Vegetative Phase During the vegetative phase, cannabis plants grow from tiny seedlings into mighty trees/bushes. During this growth period, plants need mostly nitrogen and potassium in terms of macronutrients. If your plants become deficient in either during this period, they will turn yellow. Outdoor photoperiod cannabis will bloom slow and steady as the nights get longer, so the duration of this period really depends on when you start.

Flowering Phase At the start of flowering, some plants stretch considerably. It’s like the plants go through puberty—everything grows! Some strains will double in size over a short period of time; others might stretch just a tiny bit. During this period, plants develop strong fibres and branches that will help them carry their load. When the stretch is over, your plant stops growing and will focus on producing buds. The flowering phase is officially underway! Typically within the first two weeks of flowering, females develop pistils or “hairs” to confirm their femininity. If you see “bananas” or anything resembling a cluster of small grapes, then you have a male cannabis plant. Alarm! Depending on genetics, flowering can last 7–14 weeks.

32

GROWING CANNABIS OUTDOORS

What about Growing Autoflowers Outdoors? Autoflowers are biologically programmed to transition to bloom by week 5 at the latest, making them versatile for growing outdoors. If you are growing autoflowers in a container, make sure to choose a large-enough pot. Autoflowers favour light and airy soil with fewer nutrients than photoperiod strains would prefer. As such, you will want to be careful with how you administer your nutes. You can always start with ½ or ¾ doses to make sure you’re not overloading your plants.

A D VA NTA G E S O F G R O W I N G A U TO S O U T D O O R S Sunlight means better yields and fatter buds. With autos, you can achieve several harvests in a single growing season. And, depending on conditions, you can grow them outdoors at any time of year. They are less susceptible to pests due to faster growth, they fit in tiny spaces on your balcony, terrace, or garden, and are ideal for stealthy outdoor grows/guerrilla grows thanks to their small size.

The Cannabis Legalization Activist Everything started in 2004, when she moved to Vancouver. Her immediate focus was to work for an activist organization led by Marc Emery (yes, you can start guessing things at this point...). She was the one organizing protests and marches, and also looking after the content for their website. In 2005 Marc Emery was arrested in Vancouver by the Canadian Police on a request from U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. He was subsequently extradited to the United States, where in 2010 he was sentenced to 5 years in prison on drug distribution charges. Jodie worked as an advocate for legalization of marihuana and she stepped up to look after the business while her husband was in prison. She also started editing Marc’s prison blog and made regular video updates for Pot TV and Cannabis Culture magazine.

Cannabis activist and advocate, magazine editor, prisoner’s wife, even political candidate! Whose description could this be? Somebody in your mind? Not yet? Ok, I’m waiting. No? Nothing? We’re talking about Jodie Emery. The reason she can be described in so many ways is because she’s been through so many experiences in her life, and guess what? Most of them are related to cannabis.

After Marc Emery’s release, they both continued to look after cannabis consumer rights, and the culmination of their actions was the opening of the first Cannabis Culture dispensary on April 29th, 2016 in Vancouver, BC.

So, instead, Sagan secretly wrote “Marihuana Reconsidered”, an objective essay about his profound experiences with weed.

THINK CHOCOLATE. THINK STICKY ICY Next time life gets you down, don’t reach for a chocolate bar—try some bud instead. Chocolate’s feel-good factor is indisputable, but research suggests that cannabinoids THC and CBD are also capable of promoting feelings of pleasure and reward—is that a joint in your hand or are you just pleased to see me?

TO BLAZE,OR NOT TO BLAZE: THAT IS THE QUESTION Actually, for English writer William Shakespeare, the question was an easy one to answer. The sly dog had a stash of pipes found in his back garden, and surprise, surprise, they contained traces of marijuana! We knew there was a reason Shakespeare’s plays make a lot more sense when you’re high.

WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU ONLY MAKES YOU DANKER In the case of marijuana, no feasible amount of bud is enough to be lethal to humans. And, even if you were capable of toking on 1500lbs (680kgs) in a single session, you would need to do it in an incredible 15 minutes. Now that’s a tolerance limit we can get behind.

SIT BACK AND RELAX... 5 Activities for Indica lovers

1

MOVE (A little bit...) Many weed-loving yogis stick to indica-dominant hybrids to ensure physical relaxation. Yoga will help to release your mind and muscles. (Yoga + cannabis indica) It’s just the coolest combo.

2

WATCH Indica strains are powerfully sedative. A documentary will be perfect to watch since you’ll be focused (and probably couch-locked at the sofa).

3

READ You can read a mystery or thriller book. Why? Well, the indica effect will make you focus on the small details. You’ll feel like a detective!

4

PAINT - Connect your inner spiritual you, with the creativity that cannabis provides you. Painting a mandala is one of the most relaxing activities ever.

5

LISTEN A good playlist will make you feel more relaxed, and it’s going to make a special connection between you and the notes.

2

3

PAINT - Under the euphoria of the sativa effects, you’ll want to make big things. Let your creativity fly in a big paint. Who knows? Maybe there’s something about Picasso in you.
