There’s something different every day ranging from pool and beach games to arts and crafts, bingo and live steel band music for adults. Keep the children busy with jewelry making, finger painting and sand castles, a tug of war and a scavenger hunt on the beach.

HIT THE BEACH

Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families. Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach. You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them. Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

LO MEJOR DE LA PLAYA

Costa Linda está localizado en Eagle Beach, una de las playas más hermosas en Aruba. Segura y protegida, sus refrescantes arenas blancas, aguas poco profundas y su tamaño hacen de este sitio el ideal para los niños, además de ser uno de los preferidos de las familias locales. Hay área de sombra, camastros y sillas para la playa disponibles en orden de llegada para el uso de socios y huéspedes registrados en Costa Linda de 7 a.m. a 6 p.m.

Por favor cuide sus pertenencias en el área de playa. Encontrará el reglamento de playa y alberca en la sección Consejos del resort de esta revista, favor de tomarse un momento para leerlo. Eagle Beach es una playa pública y no cuenta con salvavidas, así que nade bajo su propio riesgo.

SUN TIPS

It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water.

If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

TIPS PARA TOMAR EL SOL

Es muy fácil broncearse al inicio de sus vacaciones, en especial si usted viene de un clima frío. Evite sobrexponerse al sol, tome sus precauciones y use protector solar con FPS (por lo menos 15) según su tipo de piel. Elija productos que no dañen el ambiente y aplíquelo de manera frecuente después de nadar.

Si va a esnorquelear le recomendamos usar playera. El sol más intenso es entre las 11 a.m. y las 2 p.m., protéjase aunque esté nublado o haya viento.

POOL FUN

Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics or simply relax pool side and cool off in the Jacuzzis after your sunbathing session. Small children will love the kids pool. It is suitable for tots up to six years old. Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

DIVERSIÓN EN LA PISCINA

Relájese en la alberca y pase uno de los momentos más divertidos al participar en actividades grupales como aeróbicos o voleibol acuático, luego refrésquese en el jacuzzi. A los niños les encantará la alberca infantil, perfecta para pequeños de hasta seis años de edad. KID’S STUFF

After swimming and splashing in the kids pool , take the little ones to the beachfront play area designed specifically for them. The kids play gym is suitable for children under the age of 12 and there are a variety of complimentary events during the week. You must supervise your children at all times and ensure that there is no rough play on the equipment that may endanger their safety. The use of the installations is at your own risk.

Después de nadar y de algunos clavados en la alberca de niños, llévelos al área de juegos infantiles en la playa o al gimnasio infantil, ideal para menores de 12 años de edad, que ademas cuenta con una variedad de eventos gratuitos durante la semana. TENNIS / PICKLEBALL, ANYONE?

Challenge your friends to a game. There are two lighted tennis courts located to the south of the main entrance of the resort. Court hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. You may use the courts for one hour a day. Free tennis lessons see daily schedule. Reservations can be made at the front desk or call Ext. 7202

The calm waters of Eagle Beach are ideal for kayaks and sail boating and as a Costa Linda member or guest you are entitled to the complimentary use of a kayak for one hour per suite. Reservations are taken at the Towel desk or you can call Ext. 7224. Kayak hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The use of kayaks is at your own risk, children must be accompanied by an adult and a maximum of two adults is permitted per kayak.

VELERO SENCILLO

Las tranquilas aguas de Eagle Beach son excelentes para practicar kayak y navegar en velero, como socio o huésped de Costa Linda tiene derecho al uso gratuito de kayak, una hora por suite. Favor de reservar en el módulo de toallas o llamar a la Ext. 7224. Los horarios del tour de kayak son de 9 a.m. a 3 p.m.

El uso de kayaks es bajo su propia responsabilidad. Los niños deben ser acompañados por un adulto, sólo se permiten dos adultos máximo por kayak.

FITNESS CENTER

Keep up with your daily workout at the Fitness Center where you’ll find a variety of exercise machines to help you stay in shape. The gym staff is on hand to help you and provide for your every need.

Please wear proper attire: shirt, shorts and sneakers. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The minimum age for the Gym is 15 years old. The Gym is located beside the elevator landing (A-B Wing) on the lobby level and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., except on Fridays 7 a.m. to 12 noon.

GIMNASIO

Continúe con su rutina diaria de ejercicios en el gimnasio donde encontrará un equipo completo para ejercitarse y mantenerse en forma. El personal del gimnasio le atenderá y le proveerá de todo lo que usted necesite. Favor de usar ropa deportiva y tenis. Los jovenes menores de 18 años de edad deben estar acompañados por un adulto. La edad mínima para acceder al gimnasio es de 15 años.

The Spa collection includes body scrubs, wraps and facials to detoxify, cleanse and moisturize leaving your skin looking soft and radiant. Reflexology and luxury manicures and pedicures are also available; Spa staff will be happy to recommend additional therapies designed to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and enhance your body contour.

Access to the Costa Linda Beach Resort is controlled and all owners and guests must register at the Front desk upon arrival. The Resort assumes no responsibility for those not properly registered. The use of resort facilities is reserved exclusively for registered Costa Linda owners & guest Costa Linda is a family resort and swearing, topless and nude bathing, drugs and public drunkenness are not tolerated. Please take note that the legal drinking age on Aruba is 18 and an ID is required. No loud music or parties after 11 p.m. The Board reserves the right to assess a fine of up to one week’s maintenance fee if the resort regulations are violated.

El acceso a Costa Linda Beach Resort está controlado, todos los propietarios y huéspedes deben registrarse en Recepción a su llegada. When you stay at the Resort, you are not a guest in a hotel, you own your suite during the interval purchased. The Resort is not a hotel, nor is it managed as such. Accepting this fundamental difference is essential to understand why compensation is not permitted for any minor inconvenience you might encounter during your visit. As in your home, unexpected problems can occur. If a drain clogs or the safe will not open, call the Front desk for assistance. You can be assured the matter will be taken care of as quickly as possible, often within minutes. Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice.

Guests who insist upon complimentary compensation for inconvenience or honest mistakes must understand and accept the difference between hotel and Resort Management. Unlike hotels, Costa Linda Beach Resort is nonprofit. Owner dues cover operating expenses only. There are no funds to cover free dinners, extra nights, or gifts. The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues. Costa Linda Beach Resort is your vacation home. If a problem arises please report it. Staff members will do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, but they are not permitted to offer, nor allowed to give, free gifts. You can expect an apology for an inconvenience, but not a reward.

Los huéspedes que insistan en una compensación complementaria por algún inconveniente o error, deben entender y aceptar la diferencia entre la administración de un hotel y un resort. Costa Linda Beach Resort no tiene fines de lucro, las cuotas de los propietarios cubren únicamente los gastos de operación, no existen fondos para cubrir cenas gratis, noches extras ni regalos. HOUSEKEEPING

Daily Housekeeping service is available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No service on Sundays and local holidays. If you would like to have your room cleaned between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at a specific time, please inform your housekeeper or call the Housekeeping Office at Ext. 7411

On Sundays your towels will be changed, toiletries will be replenished and trash cans will be emptied. We kindly request that you keep your room as clean as possible. Please do not hang towels or clothes on your balcony railing. Use the laundry line in the bathroom and the towel racks on the decks. A Housekeeping surcharge may be applied if your room requires additional cleaning.

Costa Linda Beach Resort has installed a state of the art environmentally friendly “Smart Thermostat” system as part of its ongoing commitment to our owners and the community at large.

The Smart Thermostat system senses when the Suite is unoccupied and will raise the thermostat set point to an economical humidity control setting until the moment a guest returns to the room. Please allow a few minutes for the room to cool to your selected temperature upon your return. Please be aware that the air conditioning unit will be interrupted if you should leave a door open. This prevents harmful mold issues, humidity damage and energy waste.

Beach and pool rules

REGLAMENTO DE ALBERCAS Y PLAYA

No profanity allowed.

Nude or topless sunbathing is prohibited.

Public drunkenness will not be tolerated (drinking age min. 18 years-ID required). Using or having illegal drugs on or around the premises will not be tolerated.

Only Members and Registered Guests are allowed to use our Resort facilities. Members/Guests can invite day guests, but the number of total persons shall not exceed the maximum occupancy of their suite (6 persons in 2 Bedroom and 8 persons in 3 Bedroom).

Loud music/parties are not allowed after 11 p.m., except on New Year’s Eve when such activity cease by 1 a.m.

Animals are not allowed, with the exception of a trained medical certified dog. A US $400 cleaning fee will be charged.

Feeding birds, iguanas, dogs or cats is prohibited.

The use of soap, eating or drinking in the Jacuzzis or the pool is prohibited.

Only one chickee (hut) per suite can be reserved.

Chickees may not be left unattended for more than two hours. The Resort reserves the right to remove belongings from a chaise lounge and/or a hut left unattended for more than two hours.

Chickees (huts) and chaise lounges on the beach and pool decks are available on first come, first serve basis, but may not be reserved before 7 a.m. if you sit at a chickee before then, you must stay with it until 7 a.m. if you wish to reserve it. If you leave towels and belongings at an unattended chickee before 7 a.m., your belongings will be removed and held at the Towel Hut, where they can be retrieved between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Coolers, glass and ice chests are not permitted on the pool deck. Glass is not permitted on the beach.

Children under three years old are not allowed in the main pool. Children who are not potty trained, in diapers or swimmies are not allowed in the main pool. This rule will be strictly enforced. Please use the “baby” pool.

Children ages of 3 to 8 may use the pool only with supervision of parents or guardian. Children 9 and older may use the main pool if they know how to swim.

All swim at their own risk.

Diving in the pool is strictly forbidden.

Running jumps from the poolside into the pool is prohibited. Jumping from a stationary position is permitted.

Skateboards/hover boards/bikes are not allowed on the premises.

The Jacuzzi is not suitable for the very young or elderly, persons suffering from diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, pregnant women, persons under the influence of alcohol or medication which can cause drowsiness. No children under the age of 15 years are permitted. There is a 10-minute limit for each Jacuzzi. Do not put soap in the Jacuzzi.

Palapas y tumbonas en la playa y en las terrazas de la piscina están disponibles por orden de llegada, no se pueden reservar antes de las 7 a.m.. Si ocupa antes de esa hora, debe permanecer hasta las 7 a.m. para reservar, si deja toallas y pertenencias desatendidas antes de las 7 a.m., se retirarán y se guardarán en palapa de toallas, donde se pueden recuperar entre las 8 a.m. y las 6 p.m..

No se permiten malas palabras.

Está prohibido tomar el sol desnudo o en topless.

No se tolerará la embriaguez pública (edad mínima para beber 18 años, se requiere identificación).

No se tolerará el uso o la posesión de drogas ilegales en o alrededor de las instalaciones.

Solo los Socios y Huéspedes Registrados pueden utilizar nuestras instalaciones del Resort y solo ellos pueden tener invitados de un día, aunque el número total de personas no debe exceder la ocupación máxima de su suite (6 personas en 2 Habitaciones y 8 personas en 3 Habitaciones).

No se permiten fiestas/música alta después de las 11 p.m., excepto en la víspera de Año Nuevo, cuando dicha actividad debe cesar a la 1 a.m.

No se permiten animales, con la excepción de un perro de servicio con certificado médico. Se cobrará una tarifa de limpieza de US $400.

Está prohibido alimentar aves, iguanas, perros o gatos.

Está prohibido el uso de jabón, comer o beber en los jacuzzis o en la piscina.

Solo se puede reservar una palapa por suite.

Las palapas no se pueden dejar desatendidas por más de dos horas. El resort se reserva el derecho de retirar pertenencias de una tumbona y/o palapa que se deje desatendida por más de dos horas.

No se permiten hieleras ni vasos en la cubierta de la piscina. El vidrio no está permitido en la playa.

No se permiten niños menores de tres años en la piscina principal. Los niños en pañales o nadadores que no están entrenados para ir al baño deben

utilizar la piscina para “bebés”. Esta regla se aplica estrictamente.

Los niños de 3 a 8 años pueden usar la piscina solo con la supervisión de los padres o tutores. Los niños mayores de 9 años pueden usar la piscina principal si saben nadar.

Todos nadan bajo su propio riesgo.

Está prohibido bucear en la piscina.

Está prohibido realizar saltos desde el borde de la piscina hacia la piscina. Se permite saltar desde una posición estacionaria.

No se permiten patinetas/ tablas flotantes/bicicletas en las instalaciones.

El jacuzzi no es apto para personas muy jóvenes ni de edad avanzada, personas que sufren diabetes, enfermedades del corazón, alta presión sanguinea, mujeres embarazadas, personas bajo los efectos del alcohol o medicamentos que puedan causar somnolencia. TIPS DE SEGURIDAD

Although there is 24-hour security at Costa Linda Resort and Aruba is a safe travel destination, we recommend that you follow these guidelines.

Do not answer the door of your suite without verifying who it is. Call the Front Desk if in doubt.

When returning to the Resort late in the evening, use the main entrance. Be observant and look around the parking lots.

Keep the doors closed and locked when you are in your suite.

Do not leave your guest keys on restaurant tables, at the pool or in other public areas where they could be stolen.

Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.

Do not invite strangers to your suite. Store cash, valuables and documents in the in-room safe.

Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.

Report any suspicious activity to the Management by calling Ext. 7202.

THE LEGEND BEHIND ITS NAME

Most folkloric tales and legends in Aruba revolve around our indigenous ancestors, who came from mainland Venezuela, and discovered the island and made it into their new home. This particular legend tells the story of the birth of the Aruba name.

The legend follows the life of Arua, an indigenous Cacique originally from Aroa in the Falcon state in Venezuela in the year 50 AD. Arua had a son around the year 70 AD with his wife Shira, who they named Corobori. When Corobori was old enough, he joined his father on the usual boat trip to the islands of Curacao and Bonaire to gather salt. On their way back to Mainland Venezuela, they were caught up in a heavy rain storm - a side effect from a passing, but far away, hurricane. Of course, because of the lack of motors and sail, their boat was left in the mercy of the heavy winds. After a while, the storm started to pass, and the clouds began to clear up. Finally able to see around them, the Cacique spotted land approximately an hour away. So, they started to row in that direction until they reached the coast. Once they arrived on what they thought was Venezuela, they decided to stay the night and fix their kayak.

The next morning, the Cacique ordered his son and a few warriors to go find any sign of population in the area: “Corobori,” Arua said. “Don’t come back without news. It’s in your hands how long we stay here fill we find our family. So, if you need to take a week to gather information, we will wait for you.” - “Don’t worry,” Corobori replied. “As soon as we have any information, we will let you know.”

Armed with arrows and spears, backpacks filled with food and water containers, they set off. They climbed several small hills, but no sign of a village. They crossed different dry river beds, but no sign of anything. When the sun finally descended, they found them selves near a fairly tall hill and decided to climb it for a better view of a village. This hill was called PanDushi or Orcuyo, which today we call Hooiberg. The next morning, they could clearly see that they have landed on an island, but an unfamiliar one at that. When Corobori went back to where his father was wailing, he told him the news: “Father Arua, you have just discovered an island, but it is not Curacao or Bonaire.

Far in the south, we saw the big mountains of our homeland Venezuela, which we could have never seen on the other island. This leads us to believe we are on a new island. But that’s not all. When the sun came up, we saw in the distance a glowing plain, which we think may be salt.”

THE CACIQUE WAS PLEASED TO HEAR OF HIS SON’S FINDINGS.

He decided to stay a couple days on the newly-discovered island in search for salt. The next morning they ascended Hooiberg again and stayed to see if they could find nearby smoke, indicating an inhabitant village. But they found nothing. So, they went back to their initial arrival settlement, now known as Santo Largo in Savaneta. The next morning, they hiked along the Spaans Lagoen near the Mangel Hallo Beach and reached the area of Bushiri.

There, they boarded they kayaks and heading to what we know now as Malmok, where they found rocks of salt. After a couple days of exploring the island and gathering some salt rocks, they left for Venezuela, where they were reunited with their families. Throughout the year, they travelled back and forth to Aruba, collecting salt. After a while they settled on the island, generations of families living along the coast. Corobori was the first indigenous inhabitant in our history to explore the entirety of the island

Arua, after decades as the leader of his tribe, spent his last days on the island. Having reached 80 years old, he called for his family on his death bed. In his hammock, he said: “My children, many years have passed, and I’ve asked my warrior to bring me back to the island so I can laid to rest. The God of living has given me the gift of life to see my son, grandchildren and great grandchildren. But now he is calling me home. Corobori, my torch is now passed to you. Guide our people, and be the leader you were always meant to become, If one day you leave my island, do not forget that it is also yours. This is my last wish: When I die, bury me in our maize plantation.”

And so when the Cacique passed away, his wishes were granted and he was laid to rest in the area we now know as the Paradera Cemetery. Where he used to live, they built the Paradera Church.

And that is the tale of what inspired the Aruba name. In the generations that lived or travelled back and forth to the island, there were many familiar names like Guadiriki, a warrior who was there when the island got discovered and his son, whom he called Huliba; Corobori and his children, Corodori, Camacuri and Turibana, Masiduri; and Malmok, the 13-year-old boy who alerted the Cacique when the Caribes attacked.

Familiar names: all these names are familiar to Arubans, as these are the names of places and plants on the island.

La mayoría de los cuentos y leyendas folklóricas en Aruba giran en torno a nuestros antepasados indígenas, que vinieron del continente venezolano, descubrieron la isla y la convirtieron en su nuevo hogar. Esta leyenda en particular cuenta la historia del nacimiento del nombre Aruba.

La leyenda sigue la vida de Arua, un Cacique indígena originario de Aroa en el estado Falcón de Venezuela en el año 50 d.C. Arua tuvo un hijo alrededor del año 70 d.C. con su esposa Shira, a quien llamaron Corobori. Cuando Corobori fue lo suficientemente mayor, se unió a su padre en el viaje en bote habitual a las islas de Curazao y Bonaire para recoger sal. En su camino de regreso a Venezuela continental, se vieron atrapados en una fuerte tormenta de lluvia, un efecto secundario de un huracán lejano. Por supuesto, debido a la falta de motores y vela, su bote quedó a merced de los fuertes vientos. Después de un tiempo, la tormenta comenzó a disiparse, y las nubes empezaron a despejarse. Finalmente, al poder ver a su alrededor, el Cacique avistó tierra a aproximadamente una hora de distancia. Entonces, empezaron a remar en esa dirección hasta llegar a la costa.

Una vez que llegaron a lo que pensaban que era Venezuela, decidieron pasar la noche y arreglar su kayak. Armados con flechas y lanzas, mochilas llenas de alimentos y recipientes de agua, partieron. Subieron varias colinas pequeñas, pero no encontraron señales de un pueblo. Cruzaron diferentes lechos de ríos secos, pero no encontraron nada. Cuando finalmente se puso el sol, se encontraron cerca de una colina bastante alta y decidieron subirla para tener una mejor vista de un pueblo. Esta colina se llamaba PanDushi u Orcuyo, que hoy llamamos Hooiberg

A la mañana siguiente, pudieron ver claramente que habían llegado a una isla, pero una desconocida. Cuando Corobori regresó donde su padre estaba lamentándose, le dio la noticia:

“Padre Arua, acabas de descubrir una isla, pero no es Curazao ni Bonaire. Al sur, vimos las grandes montañas de nuestra patria, Venezuela, que nunca podríamos haber visto en la otra isla. Esto nos lleva a creer que estamos en una isla nueva. Pero eso no es todo. Cuando salió el sol, vimos a lo lejos una llanura brillante, que creemos que puede ser sal”.

EL CACIQUE SE ALEGRÓ AL CONOCER

LOS HALLAZGOS DE SU HIJO.

El Cacique decidió quedarse unos días en la isla recién descubierta en busca de sal. A la mañana siguiente, ascendieron nuevamente a Hooiberg y se quedaron para ver si podían encontrar humo cercano, indicando un pueblo habitado. Pero no encontraron nada. Así que regresaron a su asentamiento inicial, hoy conocido como Santo Largo en Savaneta. A la mañana siguiente, caminaron a lo largo del Spaans Lagoen cerca de la playa de Mangel Hallo y llegaron a la zona de Bushiri. Allí, abordaron sus kayaks y se dirigieron a lo que ahora conocemos como Malmok, donde encontraron rocas de sal. Después de explorar la isla durante algunos días y recoger algunas rocas de sal, partieron hacia Venezuela, donde se reunieron con sus familias. A lo largo del año, viajaron de ida y vuelta a Aruba, recogiendo sal. Después de un tiempo, se establecieron en la isla, generaciones de familias viviendo a lo largo de la costa. Corobori fue el primer habitante indígena en nuestra historia en explorar toda la isla.

Arua, después de décadas como líder de su tribu, pasó sus últimos días en la isla. Habiendo alcanzado los 80 años, llamó a su familia en su lecho de muerte. En su hamaca, dijo: “Mis hijos, han pasado muchos años, y he pedido a mis guerreros que me devuelvan a la isla para descansar. El Dios de la vida me ha dado el regalo de la vida para ver a mi hijo, nietos y bisnietos. Pero ahora me llama a casa. Corobori, mi antorcha ahora pasa a ti. Guía a nuestro pueblo y sé el líder que siempre estuviste destinado a serlo. Si algún día abandonas mi isla, no olvides que también es tuya. Este es mi último deseo: cuando muera, entiérrenme en nuestra plantación de maíz”. Y así, cuando el Cacique falleció, sus deseos fueron cumplidos y fue enterrado en el área que ahora conocemos como el Cementerio de Paradera. Donde solía vivir, construyeron la Iglesia de Paradera.

Y esa es la historia de lo que inspiró el nombre de Aruba. En las generaciones que vivieron o viajaron de ida y vuelta a la isla, hubo muchos nombres familiares como Guadiriki, un guerrero que estuvo allí cuando se descubrió la isla, y su hijo, a quien llamó Huliba; Corobori y sus hijos, Corodori, Camacuri y Turibana, Masiduri; y Malmok, el niño de 13 años que alertó al Cacique cuando los Caribes atacaron.

The first European to visit Aruba was the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and in 1636 it became a Dutch colony. The name Aruba is derived from the words “ore” and “ruba” or red gold, a reference to the discovery of gold on the island in 1824. In 1986, Aruba won its independence from The Netherlands Antilles and has status apart or autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Aruba was first settled by an Amerindian tribe called the Caiquetios. Rock paintings and fragments of pottery dating from around A.D. 1,000 have been found on the island.

Aruba is 19.6 miles long and 6 miles across, totaling 77 square miles or 193 square kilometers. Aruba is located 12° 30’ North Latitude; 68° 58’ West Longitude; 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, 990 nautical miles from Miami and 890 nautical miles from the Equator. Aruba is situated on the Caribbean Tectonic Plate. The island is made up of limestone capped hills and ridges, with cliffs on the northern and northeastern coasts and coral reefs on the southern coast. Aruba’s terrain is almost entirely flat. The highest elevation, Mount Jamanota, is only 188 meters above sea level. Rock formations characterize the interior of the island.

MONEY MATTERS

Aruba’s currency is the Aruban Florin (AFL). The exchange rate for 1 USD is generally 1.75 AFL and if you buy USD, the exchange rate is usually AFL 1.80. Dollars widely accepted and there are ATMs throughout the island. All major credit cards are accepted on the island. Banks are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. non-stop, Monday through Friday.

The Aruban climate has little variation from yearly average of a sunny 81°F or 27°C tempered by northeasterly trade winds. Aruba is out of the range of the Caribbean hurricanes. A word of caution, though, the sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and using a protective sunscreen is highly recommended.

While most people on Aruba speak English and some Spanish, the official island languages are Dutch and Papiamento, a Creole language which is a blend of Spanish, Portuguese, African, Dutch, French, English and even Amerindian words. Derived from the Portuguese verb “papaer,” which means “to speak,” Papiamento originated during the slavery era as a pidgin lingo used by estate overseers to communicate with workers from different West African tribes.

ORANJESTAD, BLUE HORSES

ORANJESTAD Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time. Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and picturesque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear.

Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares.

Located in Fort Zoutman, the History Museum has informative displays on the island’s past and local traditions. The Archaeological Museum on Zoutmanstraat is an introduction to the ancient inhabitants of Aruba and their legacy. Artifacts on display include pottery, art, stone tools and burial urns recovered at archeological sites throughout the island. Visit the Kunsthuis art gallery, café and cultural center where the entertainment program includes concerts, theater, movies and exhibitions.

Caya Betico Croes, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat, Havenstraat y el bulevard frente al mar son las calles principales. Eagle Beach is so beautiful that it would be hard get tired of it, however if you like beach hopping, the island has some of the finest pearly white strands in the Caribbean, each one with its own charm.

Located on the northwestern tip of the island, Arashi Beach and Boca Catalina are sheltered, making them popular snorkeling and swimming spots. Palm Beach is the island’s most famous and busiest beach and the location for many of its most popular waterfront restaurants and bars. Traveling south from Eagle Beach, Manchebo, Punta Brabo and Druif are all picturesque spots. Mangel Halto is a secluded cove that is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The coral reef is so close to the coast that shore diving is possible.

The shallow and sheltered bays of Rogers and Baby Beach are popular with visitors and locals alike and boast shade huts and food stands. On the windward shore, the surf is stronger and the coastline opens up to offer dramatic views of wide beaches such as Boca Grandi and Wariruri. There are also extensive dunes, rock platforms and natural limestone arches, basins and sea caves created over the centuries by wind and waves.

SPANISH LAGOON

Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates, whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, osprey, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine. Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.

ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK

Protecting one third of the island’s surface, Arikok National Park is a patchwork of rolling hills covered in cacti and bent divi trees, strange rock formations (lava, quartz diorite and limestone), caves and a stretch of coastline with beaches, dunes and rock platforms. The arid landscape is home to a surprising variety of birds including the endemic shoko or Aruba burrowing owl and prikichi or parakeet, orioles and hummingbirds, snakes, lizards, iguanas, wild donkeys and goats. Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants.

The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers. A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

Other sites of interest on the island include San Nicolas, the second largest town which grew up around the oil refinery and attracted workers from many of the British Caribbean islands. They kept their own customs, including calypso, carnival, steel bands and cuisine and the community has a unique ambiance. Visitors can go into the bush to explore the ruins of the 19th century gold smelters at Bushiribana and Balashi or the rock formations at Casibari and Ayo

The Donkey Sanctuary in Santa Lucia was founded in 1997 to provide a home for stray animals and for a glimpse of Africa you can also call in at the Ostrich Farm

The prevailing trade winds that blow across Aruba at a constant 15 knots cause choppy conditions along the windward shore, making beaches like Boca Grandi unsuitable for swimming and snorkeling but highly desirable for experienced windsurfers, kite boarders and surfers. Indeed, the island has its own windsurfing community and over the past few years, several local windsurfers have triumphed in international tournaments. The island also hosts the annual HiWinds Amateur World Challenge Windsurfing competition.

If you would like to learn how to windsurf and feel the thrill of coursing through the waves, ask at the Concierge desk about classes available from local water sports centers. You’ll start off on the Leeward coast where the breeze is much gentler. If you are a keen windsurfer, you might like to try kite boarding and see for yourself why it has caught on around the world.

BUTTERFLY FARM

See some of the world’s most beautiful and colorful insects at the Butterfly Farm. On the guided tour through the tropical gardens you’ll learn about their life cycle and their importance as environmental indicators. They are extremely sensitive to climate change, pollution and deforestation and a large butterfly population with diverse species denotes a healthy ecosystem. Take your trusty steed on an exciting ride through the hills, valleys and cactus groves of Arikok National Park down to the beach for a canter along the sands. HEAD FOR THE FAIRWAY

Most golfers make a beeline for the Tierra del Sol golf course on the northwest tip of the island. This 18-hole, par 71 course designed by Robert Trent Jones II is challenging and has spectacular views of the Caribbean and the surrounding countryside. There are also two 9-hole courses at the Aruba Golf Club near San Nicolas in the south and the Links at the Divi Resort. Mini golf provides hours of afternoon fun for the family.

If you are an old hand with a rod and net or you have always wanted to try fishing, the waters around Aruba provide plenty of challenges. Game fish such as sailfish, blue and white marlin, wahoo, tuna, bonito and dorado are plentiful yearround. You can charter a boat for a day or a half-day and the experienced crew will take you right to where the fish are running. Help preserve local fish stocks by adhering to the catch and release policy.
