PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
PHASE ONE | 2 SCHOOL TERMS
Placement in a science organisation
Teachers are placed in an organisation that uses science in its work so they gain a deeper understanding of the Nature of Science curriculum strand in context.
PHASE TWO | 12–18 MONTHS
The teacher returns to school and works with the school community to improve science teaching and student learning.
This includes:
Science curriculum development
Through workshops and online discussion, teachers use their placement experiences to expand their understanding of the Nature of Science strand.
Leadership enhancement
Teachers explore their leadership capacity by focusing on their personal growth and development through an intensive course and supplementary workshops.
• Rigorous self-review of science in the school
• Development of science programmes based on review
• Reporting on the impact on student engagement and achievement in science.
ELIGIBILITY
Participant schools are required to prioritise science as a key focus learning area during phase two. Participant teachers must:
• be a registered primary or intermediate teacher or secondary science teacher of Years 9 & 10
• have been teaching in New Zealand for a minimum of 3 years
• hold a permanent position at the school, full or part-time
• be a New Zealand citizen or have New Zealand residency.
