125 years in the creative business. It’s a major milestone and true honor to be serving the artistic appetite globally for such a long time. Today the world around us is very different to what it was; every day we hear of challenges faced by fellow inhabitants of the world we live in, and we feel their pain and suffering and wish for this to change.

As a business and an individual, the current economic distress and the environmental climatic challenges are more evident than ever before, therefore as a responsible business we take these very seriously, and actively participate in the change process, to make the difference we are committed to through our sustainability program. Furthermore, through our Royal Talens Foundation, since 1996, we try to go further by working with and through our partners in bringing changes in challenged and or deprived areas of the globe, with children at the heart of our aims and objectives with a clear aim, helping children to express creative expression through our donations. As

one would expect, we want to encourage and stimulate through creative expression of and from all human beings. So let the celebrations start, 125 years of Talens in 2024. It all started in 1899 when Marten Talens bought a villa in Apeldoorn at the same location we are based at today and started with the production of drawing ink and fine watercolour. Today our assortment has over 6.500 articles all dedicated in making your creative life colourful. Our success has necessitated the need for greater investment, and I am proud to announce we have commissioned the building of a new, state-of-the-art production plant, which will also house our Global Sales, Marketing, and warehousing platforms too, located in Apeldoorn. Our new facility will be considerably bigger, in fact twice as big, thus enabling us to cope with the demands on our products today tomorrow and hopefully the future too. We are also delighted to share, it will be the only BREAAM®Excellent certified factory and office in our industry. This level is considered “best practice” by BREEAM® because it employs proven modern technologies and concepts to increase sustainability performance.

A few phonecalls towards social impact The reason why I think entrepreneurs should make their contribution is because we live a good life, generally speaking. We can afford most necessities, but this is not the case for everybody. In a lot of households people are struggling to get by. And for these groups I want to be able to make a difference. Everything started with one email from somebody asking to donate some gifts for eight families who cannot afford gifts for the holidays. After a few phone calls we already collected enough gifts for over 200 families. We did this together. Royal Talens, the Royal Talens Foundation, some of our other suppliers and we contributed something from our store. This only took a few phonecalls and the social impact was huge.

The benefits of creativity for good As a retailer in the creative field we believe that stimulating creativity is truly beneficial for the upbringing of children and young adults. It helps them to explore their creative abilities, gives them new perspectives and opens their future possibilities. In order to truly unlock this creativity, it is important everybody has access to qualitative products. Because a qualitative product will last much longer and will ignite more of a passion towards creativity. Which is why we should make it possible also for people with less means to enjoy these qualitative products. It is not only good for them but also has a positive impact on our store, through this support we work on our community involvement and on positive brand association. It maybe does not bring in extra money in the till straight away, but the long-term positive effects it has on the community around our store, outweigh these numbers.

Imagine this, the Royal Talens Foundation supports a local nonprofit, these people come to pick up these donated materials in their local arts & crafts store, they get familiar with this store, the retailers adds some extra materials to the donation and together we make a bigger social impact.

Don’t be afraid to say yes to helping out! As a retailer you have people from all walks of life coming through the store-door. If you listen to your customers, you can hear what is going on in your community. You hear what people in your community are going through, and sometimes it is a simple as one phone call to contribute positively to your community. Entrepreneurs should not be afraid to say yes, to helping out. You don’t have to solve the whole problem, and you definitely don’t have to solve a problem alone. There is always parties like your suppliers, Royal Talens and their foundation, and other parties that are willing to contribute as well, if you are just willing to pick up that phone and ask. Together we can make a greater impact, and we as retailers are the eyes on the ground. Being able to do something small goes a long way.

INTERVIEW

We are at one of our customers which we have a longstanding relationship with. It is a Dutch retailer in the city of Enschede, Bertus Workel. This store started 55 years ago selling costumes for parties like Halloween or Carnaval. Over the years they extended their product range to art supplies, which is why they are working together with Royal Talens already for 45 years. Today we are speaking with the owners Nicole and Pim Workel about making a social impact in a local context.

Pocket box change to recycled material Van Gogh New improved recycled packaging for the Van Gogh pocket box

As part of our sustainability strategy, we will replace most of the current Van Gogh pocket boxes with recycled plastic (R-ABS). The new R-ABS versions will be light grey in color. The change will be combined with a sturdier sleeve, nice artwork and feature a recycled logo. With this new improvement the CO2 reduction on material is estimated to be 83,9% or 61100 kg CO2-eq per year! The Van Gogh watercolours are a student and artist level range of paints featuring brilliant, transparent, and intense colours with high tinting strength. Thanks to the purity and uniform viscosity, these watercolours are easy to work with and easy to mix. Van Gogh pocket boxes come prefilled or can be filled with half pans.
