Welcome to the March edition of Around Rugby! 2

Spring is here! Have you seen the crocus display on Bilton Village Green and the daffodils shooting up across the town? Hopefully this will put us all in a positive mood and enable us to leave the cold, dismal beginning of the year behind us. We have a lot of days for our communities to celebrate in March. We begin with St David’s Day on 1st, then Magha Puji on 4th, Purim on 5th, Holi and Hola Mohalla on 6th, Mother’s Day on 15th, St Patrick’s Day on 17th, Spring Equinox on 20th, Rama Navami on 28th and Palm Sunday on 29th. Don’t forget that this month also sees the start of a new campaign designed to get us all back into Rugby and help to generate a more positive, vibrant atmosphere in the town centre. On 5th March ‘1st Thursdays’ begins. Between 5.00pm and 8.00pm on the first Thursday of each month, our town centre will come to life. There will be entertainment, street food and late night shopping! There will be promotions, demonstrations and opportunities to get involved as the organisers strive to provide something for everyone. Hold on to the 1st Thursday’s leaflets coming through your doors to see where you can catch entertainment and street food as you wander around the shops. Congratulations to all those involved in organising and taking part in this scheme. We’re sure it will be a great success.

and Technology Drive as our new retail areas are constructed. Tickets are selling fast for the Rugby World Cup as we begin to gear up towards the event in the Autumn. A celebration of the Rugby World Cup is the theme for this year’s Rugby in Bloom and applications are now invited from those wishing to enter. For more information please visit www.rugby.gov.uk, email talkinthepark@rugby.gov.uk or call 01788 533706. Application forms must be received by July 6th 2015 and can be downloaded at www. rugby.gov.uk, if you choose. Back to the here and now and competition time! Our sponsor this month is Rimo Growers @Medda Place, Coventry Road, Thurlaston who are offering a £20.00 voucher to use across the Rimo range at Thurlaston. This is a great prize if you’re looking at your garden afresh this Spring. The draw takes place on 31st March. Finally, please call into the Town Centre, if you can, between 5.00pm and 8.00pm on 5th March and help Rugby get ‘1st Thursday’s’ off to a great start.

Flowers and Mother’s Day

Date for your diary: Sunday 15th March 6

Mother’s Day began in 1908 after an American lady, Ann Jarvis, asked the local church if they would set aside a day to commemorate her mother’s death. From this grew the idea to create a holiday on which all mothers – alive or dead – could be remembered, parents respected, and family bonds strengthened.

Ann started a campaign to have Mother’s Day recognised as a holiday. In 1914 she succeeded when US President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day, celebrated in May, an annual holiday. The practice has spread throughout the world! During her campaign, Ann posted or handed out white carnations, and this flower became a symbol for the day. Mothers would wear a white carnation if their mother was dead, and a coloured one if she was still living. In the UK, Mother’s Day is celebrated in March on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, this was a time when all family members were granted time off work and could gather together to worship. The day became known as Mothering Sunday – or Rose Sunday – because roses were handed out to all women present at church. Flowers symbolise purity, beauty and life – all attributes possessed by mothers - and gradually the tradition of giving flowers grew. But above all, flowers are given because our mothers like them!

Spring Cleaning! 10

The term ‘Spring Cleaning’ originated in colder climes from the practice of taking the opportunity, as soon as the warmer weather arrived, to clear out the dust and soot that had accumulated throughout the home from coal and logs fires during the Winter. Modern appliances and central heating have made this unnecessary for many, but the concept of having a top-to-bottom clean at the start of Spring remains popular.

Delphi and the Glass Slippers

By Darcey Bussell

For most young readers, Darcey Bussell will be familiar through the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. What they may not be aware of is her career with the Royal Ballet, and she has poured this love and knowledge of ballet into her series of books for young ballet obsessed girls. The Magic Ballerina books follow the adventures of Delphie, a young girl who attends a ballet school. She is given a pair of red ballet shoes which turn out to be magical, and are able to whisk her away to the land of Enchantia where characters from famous ballets live. In this book Delphie has to help Cinderella. Something strange is happening and, as the clock chimes seven o’clock, time jumps and she never gets to attend the ball. Along the way, Delphie also encounters a mysterious cloaked figure who tries to keep the Prince from finding Cinderella. Guaranteed to delight any budding ballerina, this book is exciting and full of little glimpses into the world of ballet and dancing. By Willow Coby

Generally, people use this as a chance to deepclean areas which they don’t pay attention to during their weekly household chores. Tasks can include: Emptying kitchen cupboards and cleaning inside. This is a good opportunity to check use-before dates on items and throw out those past their expiry date. Defrosting freezers, de-scaling kettles and irons, and cleaning ovens to aid efficient working. Vacuuming mattresses to get rid of dust mites, and turning mattresses to assist even wear. Removing cushions from sofas and vacuuming the crevices- you never know, you may find some money or jewellery that you thought you’d lost. Many people actually find the process of cleaning and de-cluttering cathartic. If you don’t fancy tackling it all yourself, then you can always get help from a professional cleaning company, many of whom offer special Spring Cleaning services. By Susan Brookes-Morris

OVENU Rugby to the rescue this Spring! Dave and Helen Simmonds, owners of Ovenu Rugby, the experienced oven valeting specialists, are urging homeowners not to neglect their ovens during the spring clean season. Dave said: “Getting the house in order is satisfying, but when it comes to oven cleaning, people would rather be doing other things. Our service is designed to save customers the hassle and keep their oven free from potential health and safety risks that come with a dirty oven.” The pair celebrated their most successful year in 2014, amassing a record number of cleans since the company’s formation in 2010.

Warwick, Coventry, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Kenilworth, Stratford, Shipston, Southam, Gaydon and all surrounding villages. Ovenu’s valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven and placing them into design-registered equipment, using non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes around three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. To make a booking with Ovenu, call 01788 816863, email dave.ovenurugby@uwclub.net or visit www.ovenurugby.net/.

Dave added: “Following our most successful year yet, we’re looking to push on and hopefully expand our business in the future.” In addition to Rugby, the environmentally friendly Ovenu service covers Leamington,

Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you'd prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group – between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help!

Call Alice or Ray for a chat on 01788 552 545 or email us RFF@ageukwarks.org.uk

She still does. At Anya Court, industry-leading residential, nursing and dementia care are just the beginning. We really get to know our residents too - it’s how we help them to enjoy all the little things that make a big difference to their day. Here, residents living with dementia can still enjoy the experience of a visit to the hair salon, the delicious taste of fresh coffee and homemade biscuits in the café, or even just the sense of fulfilment that comes from helping out with the gardening. It’s all about living life to the full. Young Enterprise groups move to the next stage

The Young Enterprise groups are continuing with their businesses, having just delivered their Interim Presentations at Lawrence Sheriff School on 25 February. These presentations were an ideal opportunity for the groups to reflect on what they’ve achieved so far, and also for them to plan for the critical second half of the programme. The programme culminates with the Rugby Finals which are to be held at Rugby High School on 23 April 2015. Throughout the programme, the groups have been lucky enough to have access to business premises to hold their weekly meetings. By meeting on business premises, the students are taken out of their school ‘comfort zone’, and are placed in a commercial business environment, which hopefully encourages their entrepreneurial spirit rather than viewing the sessions as another lesson at the end of the school day. The organisations that have enabled us to hold the weekly meetings on business premises this year are:

Brethertons Solicitors on Clifton Road Morgan Sindall on Corporation Street Asda on Chapel Street Intec Business College on Pennington Court HSBC on Church Street Without the support and co-operation of these organisations, Young Enterprise in Rugby wouldn’t be the success that it is. If you’d like to know more about Young Enterprise in Rugby, would like to attend the Rugby Area Finals, or would like to get involved in the programme, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir on 01788 57945 or email rosie.callaway@belvoirtlettings.com
