OCTOBER 2014 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,300 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.
Welcome to the October edition of Around Rugby! 2
October already! We are well and truly out of Summer now and looking ahead to Christmas again. Don’t get too worried though, we still have the pleasures of Autumn to enjoy first. All that colour, crunchy (or soggy) leaves, foggy mornings, windy weather and puddles of rain to splash in. Get out there and enjoy! On the subject of enjoyment, congratulations to the organisers and all who took part in the Rugby Food & Drink Festival including the Real Ale Trail last month. A job well done! This month sees a number of religious days including Yom Kippur on 4th, Eid-al-Adha on 5th, Sukkot between 8th and 15th, Shemini Atzeret on 16th, Simchat Torah on 17th and Diwali on 23rd. Some of us also choose to celebrate All Hallows Eve on 31st. Remember if you are out Trick or Treating on Hallowe’en – take care and keep a responsible adult with you at all times! You can see some particularly scary and unusual characters out there. Hallowe’en costumes are so much more exciting these days and it’s always great to see so many parents out and dressed up for the occasion too. I should also make a quick mention of STOPTOBER – particularly for those trying to quit smoking. Why not look at www.nhs/smokefree; www.quit.org. uk, call the NHS Smokefree Helpline on 0800 0224 332 or visit your GP or pharmacist for advice. Try Facebook and Twitter sites using ‘NHS Smokefree’ for chat. There is so much going on in the news right now that it’s difficult to focus on our own little town. However, the one thing that is constantly in my mind is the beginning of the end of Elliot’s Field Retail Park as we know it. I pass the site every morning on my way to work and every day

something new has happened. It’s very sad to see the shops closing one by one and workmen moving in to prepare for the demolition and future construction, but quite exciting to think of what will replace it. One business that isn’t going anywhere in the immediate future is our October competition sponsor. The Holly Bush on Lawford Road, Rugby is offering a prize of two main meals and two drinks to the value of £20.00. I have heard that the food here is well worth the visit, so even if you don’t win, why not pop round for lunch one day anyway? The winner of our August competition was Brenda Stephens who won a £20.00 voucher to use across the Rimo range at RimoGrowers@ MeddaPlace, Coventry Road, Thurlaston. Brenda correctly answered that the colour of the flowers of Allium nigrum are B) White. For those of you who saw our September issue you may recall that I was invited to Brownsover Community School for a special assembly with a very special guest and I was lucky enough to meet the amazing Mark Wood – Explorer. Mark led a very interactive session with the children and teaching staff who were, at one point, encouraged to be polar bears and penguins! I’m sorry adults, but you were hilarious! If you’re interested in what Mark does and why he does it, have a look at the article in this magazine.
Amanda PS Don’t forget that Anya Court, our newest care home opens its doors this month. I would certainly encourage anyone who hasn’t had a look around to book a tour – it’s well worth a visit to see the thoughtful organisation and beautiful grounds even if you’re not anticipating being a resident.

CHARITY INVITES OLDER PEOPLE IN RUGBY TO JOIN THEM FOR A CUPPA, CAKE AND GOOD COMPANY! Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents to join its existing group in Rugby and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company. The charity, with the support of a volunteer network, organises tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would appreciate some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same. Over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Midlands Development Officer, Pamela Walker, said: “Activities for people aged 75 and above are normally limited to weekdays, so Sunday can be a particularly long and difficult day. Our tea parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have, so they can make a real difference. We wanted to make people aware that the Rugby group is looking for guests and to encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch with us. Rugby residents, aged 75 and above, who live alone, without the support of family and friends, and who are interested in joining the Rugby Contact the Elderly group can contact Pamela Walker, Midlands Development Officer on 0121 603 1331 or email pamela.walker@contact-the-elderly.org.uk
MARK WOOD – EXPLORER! On a recent visit to Brownsover Community School, I met a man with a taste for adventure, an environmental and educational conscience and a man who could make professional, responsible adults behave like polar bears and penguins. Mark Wood, a Coventrian by birth, has spent over 10 years living his dream. He has explored areas of our planet that the rest of us can only stare at, in awe, via the tv screen. Mark is a Polar Explorer who has completed numerous expeditions across some of the planet’s most inhospitable areas. His first adventure in 2003 was a 70 day training expedition and research for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in the Canadian Arctic. Mark and his team took tests for the organisation while out on the ice. Since that first adventure, Mark has made numerous expeditions to the Geomagnetic North and South Pole, climbed Mount Everest and cycled his way across the USA and New Zealand’s North Island. Not only has he taken on whatever Mother Nature could throw at him as a team member and as a leader; he has trekked out there alone. He has pushed his mind and body to their limits, told the tale along the way and retold it again across the world. All of Mark’s adventures have an educational focus and he regularly holds Skype sessions with students around the world whether he is mid-expedition or in a local café in England. His audiences range from school reception classes to university students and he regularly delivers his presentations on extreme leadership to industry leaders. What really stuck out for me, at that primary school assembly in September, was that Mark Wood is not only an adventurer who participates in some awe-inspiring activities, he is an outstanding communicator, a great educator and a very funny man! He has immense respect for his planet and a great concern for its changing state. He believes that his adventures should not be undertaken purely for exploration in its own right, but to raise awareness and to educate his fellow men. Mark has completed a number of documentaries relating to the Inuit people, the effects of global warming and climate change and was Arctic guide and provided technical support for the BBC Top Gear programme’s ‘Race to the Pole’. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, holds several Ambassadorial roles and is the patron of numerous environmental and educational organisations. Mark’s next adventure is a 3 man expedition in February 2015. This trek, from the Canadian coastline to the North Pole (without resupply), is likely to be the last time a venture of this kind can be attempted due to the irreversible melting of the polar ice caps and is very aptly named ‘A Race Against Time’. You can find out more about Mark, his work and North Pole 2015 at www.markwoodexplorer.com or by looking him up on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

The poppies will encircle the Tower, creating not only a spectacular display, but also an inspiring setting for learning activities, as well as providing a location for personal reflection. YOUNG ENTERPRISE 2014/15 27
64 students have signed up this year, from 6 schools: Ashlawn, Avon Valley, Bilton, Harris, Lawrence Sheriff and Rugby High. The students have been split into 5 groups, based on which days they were available to attend the weekly meetings and which friends they wanted to work with. We’re really lucky this year to have had 5 organisations offer their premises for the students to hold their weekly meetings: Asda, Brethertons, HSBC, INTEC and Morgan Sindall. Each group has been allocated two (or in one case three) Business Advisors; volunteers from the local business community, who will mentor and advise the groups as they set up their businesses. Business advisors this year are: Carin Jackson from Utility Warehouse Dhruv Naker from Steers Printing Diane Rose from Barclays Hayley Kenney from Rolls Royce John Quinn from Quinn Roofing Kallum Bell from The Road Ahead Mark Winfield from Barclays Paul Rogers from Bottomley & Co Sheila Bell from Swann Systems Tony Gillias from TG Electrical Services Yolanda Morley-McKay from Halo FX The groups had their first meetings in September, where they got to know each other, started thinking about who’s going to be MD or Finance Director or Marketing Director etc, and also what products and services they’re going to make or offer. They need to get focussed quickly, as they’ll be able to put themselves in front of the ‘Dragons’ Lair’ in November, where they’ll have the opportunity to pitch their ideas to local ‘Business Dragons’ to get additional funding. The Dragons’ Lair is organised and funded by George & Co. More details about that next month! If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise or being an advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on 01788 579456.
