The new, re-branded ‘Around Rugby’ magazine. I hope you like it. We’ve chosen something a little clearer and crisper while still maintaining our trademark pink (it’s a girly thing, you know!) You’ll also notice a number of other changes this month. We have the beginnings of our new ‘Capture Corner’ feature which highlights your photographs sent into our studio. Thank you to Simon Coates for this month’s stunning pic. If you take a photo of a breathtaking sunset, a picturesque vista or even your dog in the paddling pool, please send it in and share it with us. We’ll also add your photos to a dedicated gallery on our new website. We’ve also enlisted some local clubs to contribute to the magazine each month. Frances Debonnaire from Rugby Ramblers will write about local featured walks and Erica Hyde from Ashlawn Dog Training Club will fill us in on the antics of our four-legged friends. We have also built on our relationship with Rugby Town FC and they join us to give an insight into the world of football at local level. Around Magazines continues to support the Young Enterprise scheme in Rugby and their news will still be found within our pages each month. Look out for further interesting group features due to join us over the coming months. There are also lots of opportunities to have your clubs and societies featured – so if you’re looking for more members or just want to shout out about what you do - please get in touch. We’re always looking for your positive input and ideas - so don’t hold back! Our What’s On and Useful Information sections have changed slightly as we strive to encompass our growing community themes. There’ll be more about what’s going on around us than has been seen before.

Don’t forget to check out our brand new website designed with you, our readers, in mind. Find us at www.aroundmagazines.co.uk. Don’t worry if you’re a current or potential advertiser - we haven’t forgotten you; we need you! So, we’ve given you a brand new website too. Check it out at www.aroundadvertising.co.uk Remember: you can always follow us on Twitter and Facebook too. This is where you’ll see what we’re up to and where we’re going between editions of the magazine and where we’ll feature you and what you’re doing in between mags too. Finally, our competition this month is based around the Rugby World Cup. Webb Ellis have kindly offered a prize of a ball-stitching lesson for two people along with a tour of the museum and the possibility of coming home with your very own stitched ball. Last month we ran two competitions; one offering a family ticket to Twycross Zoo which was won by Mark Wright who correctly answered that there were 4 types of Great Ape at the zoo, and secondly, a competition offering one of three signed books by local author Julia Wills. The three ‘FLEECED’ winners were Eric Lewis for Charlotte and Matthew, Harriet Collins (via Matt) and Claudia Cater (via Paul) who all answered correctly that the Greek hero who stole the Golden Fleece was Jason. Well done to you all!

PS We have our last Bank Holiday before Christmas on Monday 31st August so make the most of it!

Advertising in Around Rugby magazine has done wonders for our business “We have different deals on each month and rather than spending lots of money on flyering and delivering to 1000’s of houses each month we can get a unique advert every month in a magazine that we know people read. They help design you adverts and for the price you pay it is hard to think of a reason not to do it. Brilliant value for money and a key marketing tool for a small business like our own”. Secondary schools in Rugby take part in Young Enterprise activities, along with local businesses and volunteers, with a view to building a bettermotivated, educated and enterprising workforce, while at the same time making a real difference to the existing lives and future potential of young people who live and attend school in the area. (More information can be found on the website www.young-enterprise.org.uk.). The scheme offers students aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to set up and run their own real company over the course of an academic year (from late September to Easter), with the support and guidance of volunteer advisers from business. How You Can Help: We’re looking for business people who can give an hour a week during term time, from September to April, to support and advise groups of students who are doing the Young Enterprise scheme. The groups meet for an hour a week during term time, usually on business premises (subject to premises being offered by local businesses!). While the advisors are asked to lead the meetings for the first couple of weeks, beyond that the advisors are required to counsel and guide in the meetings, rather than lead and direct. New advisors are always paired with an experienced advisor, so that they have someone to

learn from and also so that there is potential for cover to allow for times when one of the advisors is not able to attend a session. Training is given along with support materials, to all new advisors. All advisors need to be DBS checked (formerly CRB) so will need to complete a form and provide photographic ID and proofs of address.

We are also looking for business premises to host the meetings. The venues need to be in the town centre with a room with tables & chairs for up to 15 people. The room needs to be available from c.4pm to 5.30pm on the same day every week. If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise or being an advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on Newbold Road, by calling 01788 579456.

Record-breaking Godiva Festival hailed as ‘best yet’ by organisers. Now in its 17th year, the Godiva Festival enjoyed record crowds and brilliant blue skies throughout the weekend, with musical highlights from rabble-rousing punk rock duo Slaves, multi-platinum selling funk-soul brothers, the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, plus some crowd pleasing indie anthems from Embrace and The Wombats.

Across the site at Coventry’s War Memorial Park you can find a petting farm, falconry display, a zip wire and other hair raising fairground rides, local crafts and hobbies, tea, cake and plenty of beer. You can even enjoy an ostrich burger!

But there’s a lot more to experience at the UK’s biggest free family festival than the excellent musical headliners.

Vintage Market is a roaring success... One of the biggest attractions at this year’s event was the Vintage Market offering retro clothes, hair and home furnishings, among other antiquities. Organiser and stall holder Debbie Beeston commented; This is my third year in charge of the vintage market. From humble beginnings, we have grown each year to become one of the festivals main attractions. We have more then 30 stalls in our tent and the feedback I’ve had from all my vendors so far has been 100% positive”. Inside the tent I spoke to Rugby based mobile hairdresser and vintage hair specialist Carla McKeever. “I have been totally blown away by the interest my stall has received. The people of Coventry definitely love a bit of festival glamour. And Victory Rolls are definitely back in vogue!”. Another vintage trader Amber Lois Burke, who also works for Warwickshire based online vintage magazine Elegant Savage, told me; “This is our first year trading at the Godiva Festival. We are really pleased with the turnout.

We’ve really enjoyed the weekend and hope to return again next year”. The Godiva Festival seems to improve with each passing year, bringing not only great excitement but also massive economic benefits to the city of Coventry. There is however, uncertainty about the future of the event as it could be hit by council funding cuts. Sponsors are being sought after by the city council to help stage the festival in the future. I, along with the other 100,000+ attendees, I’m sure would love it to continue. By Paul Wongsam

Our countryside has a comprehensive network of rights of way, public footpaths and bridleways which permit easy access for walkers. Footpaths typically pass over private land, but if they are public rights of way they are historic footpaths that have been used by our ancestors, who used them to go to market, walk to church or visit their relatives. The footpaths are part of our heritage. Despite there being a huge variety of great walking opportunities, both in the local countryside and further afield, not everyone feels confident about going out on their own and would maybe prefer to walk in good company and enjoy the shared experience. Walking with Rugby Ramblers enables you to go on walks that will be in different areas both locally and further afield. We organise over a hundred walk a year graded to suit most abilities, together with a range of social activities. With the variety of walk lengths, destinations, weekday and weekend walking, we have so much to offer. The weekday walking not only suits retired people but also shift workers who maybe work some weekends. Our group is attractive to all ages.

The health benefits of walking are well documented and having a full programme of walks to choose from, you will certainly walk more often making new friends and feel the benefit of walking in our beautiful countryside. Our Summer/Autumn programme has our four mile Wednesday evening walks listed but they started in May but finish the second week in August. They seem to be over all too quickly but are then replaced by our five mile Wednesday morning walks until the following Spring. We have two coach trips a year to areas where it would be too far to drive for a days walking. In March this year we went to Ironbridge, Shropshire. With a choice of three walk lengths this proved very popular. We all enjoyed our lovely walks and of course ended up in a tea room for a cream tea. Our next coach trip in October is to Derbyshire walking from Eyam to Chatsworth. If you are interested in walking with us please visit our website www.rugbyramblers.org.uk e-mail: ask@rugbyramblers.org.uk or phone Fran: 01788 815484 We are a friendly group and you will be made most welcome.

We organise over a hundred walks a year graded to suit most abilities, together with a range of social activities. With the variety of walk lengths , destinations, weekday and weekend walking, we have so much to offer. The weekday walking not only suits retired people but also shift workers who maybe work some weekends. Our group is attractive to all ages.

The health benefits of walking are well documented and having a full programme of walks to choose from, you will certainly walk more often, making new friends and feel the benefit of walking in our beautiful countryside.

We have two coach trips a year to areas where it would be too far for a days walking. In March this year we went to Ironbridge, Shropshire. With a choice of three walk lengths we were all able to enjoy our lovely walks and of course ended up in a tea shop for cream tea.

If you are interested in walking with us please visit our website www.rugbyramblers.org.uk e-mail ask@rugbyramblers.org.uk or phone Fran (01788) 815 484

Ashlawn Dog Training Club was Kennel Club Registered from 1969 to July 2012 and are winners of the Registered Dog Training Clubs section at the Kennel Club Good Citizens Dog Scheme Annual Awards February 2011. The Club is now Kennel Club Listed. Originally the Club was based in the Hillmorton area for many years, (hence the name) but three years ago moved to its current premises on the Paynes Lane Industrial Estate where classes are held every Monday evening except Bank holidays and over Christmas.

The Club’s secretary had a particularly good Crufts this year with her three Belgian Shepherd Tervuerens gaining a total of five places between them in the Breed ring, and making it a clean sweep in the Special class for Tervueren bitches that have passed a Kennel Club Good Citizens award. They do not only compete at breed shows but also in Heelwork to Music and Obedience.

Club’s objective is to encourage interest in the training of dogs and membership of the club is open to dogs of all breeds provided these dogs have protection against the normal canine diseases. Although all our trainers are volunteers they have many years of experience in dog training and behaviour. Several of them compete with their dogs at various activities ranging from breed showing, obedience, agility, rally and heelwork to music. We train to the guidelines of the Kennel Club Good Citizens Dog scheme, which is designed to help owners achieve a well behaved pet dog. The classes are structured to train members’ pet dogs from puppy to senior...and their owners.

The Club runs 8 weeks courses for new members, with either ‘baby’ puppies or older puppies and dogs. On successful completion of the course puppies less than twelve months can gain their Kennel Club Puppy Foundation certificate and the older dogs can get a Club beginners certificate. Then if the owners wish they can move on to work towards the other Kennel Club Good Citizens Awards. Details of these courses can be found on our website, they are very popular and do get booked up pretty quickly.

This year several of our members had a very successful time at Crufts. One of our junior members who is now studying at university in London won the Young Kennel Club Graduate Obedience class.

If you would like to know more about training your dog, visit our website: www.ashlawndogtraining.blogspot.co.uk e-mail ashlawndogtrainingclub@gmail.com or phone Erica 024 7631 3852

Two of our newer members both passed their Bronze Good Citizens Dog Scheme awards there; not easy with all the noise and distractions.
