Welcome to the July edition of Around Rugby! 2
The holiday season is well and truly upon us, July is here and we hope it’s brought the summer weather with it! As far as celebrations go, I think the biggest event is the impending school summer hols. Most of our children will be counting the days until they can get out of their school uniforms and embrace the freedom of leisure filled days whilst as parents we’re counting the days until we have full scale riots on our hands as there is nothing that can entertain our little darlings for longer than 30 minutes at a time. School closures aside, we celebrate Dharma Day on 2nd, Eid-al-Fitr on 17/18th and Tisha B’Av on 25th. Another date to be aware of is St Swithin’s Day when we all pray for no rain; our kids will drive us insane if they can’t play outside for forty days! This month, instead of focussing on what’s happening in Rugby (and there is plenty going on) I’d like to focus on what’s happening here at Around. In this July mag, you’ll notice some interesting bits of information. We’re rebranding from the August edition so things will look slightly different and hopefully, the content will be improved. We’re making our advertisement slots more accessible to local businesses and extending our community involvement further. We are now looking for your input into your community magazine. Here’s how you can get involved – tell us about your interests; let us visit your local group meetings whether it’s social, sporting or health related and we’ll shout about it to your local community. At this point I should say thank you to those people who have already contacted me; I haven’t forgotten you and I’ll be with you shortly! A good portion of my

time has now been freed up and I’m raring to go. Remember: we can change our logo but you can help make the difference. So, we’ve started you off this month by asking you to think about submitting your favourite photographs and about healthy leisure activities you may want to share with us. Don’t be shy, give me a call or email me. Competition time: As promised last month, we once again offer you the chance to take away one of three prizes. Author Julia Wills is promoting her book ‘Fleeced’ along with her newest addition ‘Rampage’ and has kindly agreed to sign 3 more copies of ‘Fleeced’ for us to give away. This is a fab prize for the children in your family. The competition will be drawn on 31st July. Good luck! The winner of the May competition was Jill Palmer who correctly named b) Jordan Spieth as the winner of the 2015 US Masters and won herself a four ball at Whitefields Golf Club. The winner of the April competition was Reece Bowes who correctly named Chris Evans’ character Steve Rogers, from The Avengers: Age of Ultron, as Captain America. Reece won a pair of Cineworld cinema tickets. Congratulations and well done to both of you. Finally, we’ve received a message from the winner of the February Ovenu competition, Jon Bourne. Jon says: ‘Another great job done by Dave, I have used Ovenu 2/3 times now and am always delighted with the job done, it’s like having a new oven, highly recommended.’ There you go Ovenu Rugby – no better recommendation than that!

Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you'd prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group - between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help! RFF is currently welcoming volunteer Befrienders. Applicants will need to be compassionate, a good listener, and must have a sense of humour, as well as around two hours of time weekly to devote to the role. Previous experience is desirable but not essential - training in dementia awareness and ongoing support will be provided.

The Annual 2014 Pocket Money Survey by the Halifax revealed that 8 to 15 year olds received an average amount of £6.35 per week. Whilst parents or guardians were the main givers, a third of those surveyed also received pocket money from grandparents. Thirteen year olds were the most likely age group to receive weekly amounts and boys received more on average than girls. Only a third of children said they would save up for something expensive, most preferring to ask for it as a present. Other surveys such as those by Roosterbank suggest children as young as 3 are getting pocket money. Whatever the amount, pocket money given in the right way can help children to learn the necessary skills and gain the confidence to handle money responsibly. If you are having trouble deciding how much pocket money to give your children, think about what you expect them to pay for from that money. You can involve your children in the decision process. Do you expect them to buy their own sweets and magazines with the money for example, and would this mean that they ended up eating fewer sweets than you currently buy for them which may lead to healthier choices? Or would you prefer to buy this type of thing and money will be for ‘special extras’ only?
Commonly a basic payment plus bonus system is recommended. This includes a fixed amount which is given as long as children do certain expected things, perhaps keep their rooms tidy and do their homework for example. It is then ‘topped’ up by extra amounts if children do additional chores or achieve something significant .Of course you will need to make the possibilities appropriate to their age, and different chores can attract different bonuses depending on the time and effort required. Many parents find that the use of a reward chart is helpful, particularly for younger children as it shows clearly the financial benefits of completing extra tasks. Having regular conversations about what children are doing with their money, what they want to buy and why they want it is also important. This can help them understand the value of things much more clearly than when you pay for things for them because they have to decide whether to buy x or y. If you can bear it, it really is best to let them learn from their financial mistakes. Whilst many children will have a splurge when they first start receiving pocket money, as they get used to it they tend to become more careful about their choices. You can also help stimulate their thinking by talking about how you budget. By Susan Brookes-Morris

From My Perspective -
a photographic exhibition Simon Coates of Simon Coates Photography has made a career out of a passion which he invites us to share this summer. We’ll have the opportunity to explore Simon’s work as he exhibits a selection of photographs taken from his massive collection that spans worldwide travel, action events and wildlife. This, his third solo exhibition, runs from 25th July to 6th August at the Floor One Gallery, Rugby Art Gallery & Museum. Simon is no stuffy, trained and certificate holding photographer but a genuinely nice guy with a passion for travel, wildlife, action, professionalism and perfection. Since receiving his first real camera at the age of sixteen (it was a Nikon with a real film in it) he has built a career out of a hobby and learnt to look at his subject from, occasionally, a different angle to everyone else. A keen member of the Dunchurch Camera Club, Simon wowed judges with his out of the box interpretations of competition themes (ask him about ‘Water’ for example). Always self-critical, his photographs are genuinely honest and never tampered with – what you see is absolutely what he captured – no cheating. He travels the world, when he can, spending time photographing not only the usual touristy spots, but places and subjects that most of us wouldn’t even dream of being able to capture. He has spent time on a Russian research vessel in Antarctica and travelled extensively in the USA, also visiting Mexico, Singapore, Dubai and India and has rubbed shoulders with great wildlife photographers such as Mark Carwardine and Andy Rouse. His stunning photographs have captured penguins, killer whales and even bears in their natural habitat and mountains, lakes and deserts
in all their glory. Simon is also an excellent live action photographer, regularly zigzagging the country working at equestrian and motor sport events and recently covered the gruelling 12 mile Tough Mudder. Along with his charming and competent wife Anita, the Coates’ are continuing to build on a great reputation which includes their wedding and social event photography and are now offering a brilliant event photo booth which is hired for weddings, birthdays, proms and the like. Simon Coates’ ‘From My Perspective’ will contain a mixture of Simon’s old and new work and is sure to fascinate and inspire anyone with any means of capturing an event or subject, whether it’s with a top of the range digital camera, an i-pad or even a smart phone. Check out his exhibition at the Floor One Gallery at Rugby Art Gallery & Museum between 25th July and 6th August then get out there and have a go yourself. Simon’s top tip for fantastic photography is this: Always take your wildlife pics from the same level as your subject, or below. If you’re photographing a family of ducks on their way to the pond, get down on the ground at their level and if you’re capturing a robin on a snowy fence – try to keep him at eye level. PS – If you’re ever looking for a humorous hourlong ‘talk/video presentation’ for your W I meeting or social group – give Simon a call. You won’t regret it. Who’s for Ice Cream? In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month! Isn’t that a fab idea? I think the UK should definitely follow suit on this one. Around 25% of all ice cream sold in the UK is vanilla. As a nation it seems we’re not terribly adventurous. Here are some more frozen facts: The earliest known reference to ice-cream in English was in 1672. Approximately 15 billion litres of ice-cream are consumed worldwide every year - enough fill 5,000 Olympic swimming pools. According to NASA, ice-cream is among the top three items most missed by astronauts on space missions: the others are pizza and fizzy drinks. When Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield went into business as Ben & Jerry, they only chose icecream because bagel-making equipment was too expensive! Who knew? There is actually a diet called ‘The Ice Cream Diet’...seriously! It was developed in Venice

Fancy getting your hoofs onto one of the funniest children’s books around? Then enter our free draw to win one of three copies of Julia Wills’ ‘Fleeced!’, published by Piccadilly Press. With its fresh twist on the Ancient Greek myths, ‘Fleeced!’ tells what happens when Aries, the bald ram whose Golden Fleece was stolen by Jason and the Argonauts, wins a chance to return to modern day Earth to rescue his beautiful coat. Hilarity and mayhem follow in this fast-paced adventure, which was voted by a nationwide panel of librarians and children onto last year’s UK Arts Council Summer Reading Challenge. Since then the book has gained great reviews on Amazon, The Guardian Children’s website and from fellow children’s authors. Find out for yourself what all the giggling is about in this free book giveaway. ‘Fleeced!’ and its sequel ‘Rampage!’ are available from Amazon and all good bookshops.
About JULIA WILLS Although Julia Wills was born in the last century this absolutely does not make her as old as the Ancient Greeks she tells stories about. However, she does admit to writing for just about as long as she’s been able to hold a pen. As a child Julia wanted to be either a vet or a ballerina. Luckily, she opted for writing instead, otherwise by now she’d be busy harassing hamsters whilst wearing a glittering tutu. After studying Psychology at Oxford University, Julia completed her teacher training at Northampton and a distancelearning Masters in Writing at Glamorgan (now the New University of South Wales). Writing in her free time, she has always worked in various day jobs, such as maintaining a photo library for a Texan oil company, tasting sausages, working for batty professors at Oxford and teaching Year Four children in Northamptonshire. It was here, in the classroom, as Miss Wills, that she discovered just how much children love learning about the Ancient Greeks, their fabulous monsters and glitzy heroes, and most importantly of all, how children love a good laugh when they read.

Our countryside has a comprehensive network of rights of way , public footpaths and bridleways which permit easy access for walkers. Footpaths typically pass over private land, but if they are public rights of way they are historic footpaths that have been used by our ancestors who used them to go to market, walk to church or visit their relatives. The footpaths are part of our heritage.
Our new Summer/Autumn programme has our four mile Wednesday evening walks listed. They started in May and finish the second week in August. Then our up to five mile Wednesday morning walks replace these until the following Spring.
Despite there being a huge variety of great walking opportunities, both in the local countryside and further afield, not everyone feels confident about going out on their own and would maybe prefer to walk in good company and enjoy the shared experience. Walking with Rugby Ramblers enables you to go on walks that will be in different areas both locally and further afield. We organise over a hundred walks a year graded to suit most abilities, together with a range of social activities. With the variety of walk lengths , destinations, weekday and weekend walking, we have so much to offer. The weekday walking not only suits retired people but also shift workers who maybe work some weekends. Our group is attractive to all ages. The health benefits of walking are well documented and having a full programme of walks to choose from, you will certainly walk more often, making new friends and feel the benefit of walking in our beautiful countryside.
We have two coach trips a year to areas where it would be too far for a days walking. In March this year we went to Ironbridge, Shropshire. With a choice of three walk lengths we were all able to enjoy our lovely walks and of course ended up in a tea shop for cream tea. If you are interested in walking with us please visit our website www.rugbyramblers.org.uk e-mail ask@rugbyramblers.org.uk or phone Fran (01788) 815 484

Protect Your Skin The facts about suntan lotion 25
Do you know your factor 8’s from your factor 30’s and your UVA protection from your UVB? Browsing a display of sunscreens can certainly be confusing, so here’s a little help. First to the basics: how do sunscreens work? Sunscreens, also commonly referred to as sun block, sun tan lotion and sun cream, are products which contain a combination of ingredients which help to prevent the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. There are two types of radiation, UVA has longer wavelengths and can cause lasting skin damage, skin aging and skin cancer, because they are not absorbed by the ozone layer and so can penetrate skin deeply, potentially causing the most harm. UVB has shorter waves, is partially absorbed by the ozone layer but can still cause sunburn and also skin damage and skin cancer. Most products focus on protecting against UVB rays, but those that describe themselves as broad spectrum provide protection against UVA and UVB. Sunscreens both absorb and reflect the sun’s harmful rays. You will see the expression ‘sun protection factor (SPF)’ on products. This is a measure of the products ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. For example if your skin would usually start to redden in the sun after 10 minutes, using a sunscreen with a factor of 30 suggests that you will not redden until you have been in the sun for 30 times as long as that which is 300 minutes. You should remember that this is only a guide. You will also find additional guidance about which factor to choose depending on how fair your skin is as the fairer you are the faster you will generally burn. The time of
day you are out will also have an impact. For example protection won’t be as good if you are exposed to full strength mid day sun compared to early morning rays. You should also remember that you will need to reapply sunscreens regularly throughout the day. There are a huge range of products to choose from. Sunscreens now come in lotions, creams, gels and oils. Many have additional ingredients to make them smell nicer, be water resistant, show up as a colour or be easy to rub in. There are also special varieties developed for the face and lips. One final thing to remember is that certain health conditions and medications can make a person more sensitive to sun exposure, so you might need to use a higher SPF if on antibiotics or antihistamines for example. If you are on medication it is best to seek professional advice. By Susan Brookes- Morris

Our countryside has a comprehensive Our new Summer/Autumn programme network of rights of way , public footpaths and bridleways which permit has our four mile Wednesday evening easy access for walkers. Footpaths walks listed. They started in May and finish the second week in August. typically pass over private land, Then but they are public rights of way they if our up to five mile Wednesday morning are walks replace these until the historic footpaths that have been following used Spring. by our ancestors who used them to go to market, walk to church or visit their relatives. The footpaths are part of our heritage.

Why Floss? You might clean your teeth religiously twice a day and feel that you are doing all you can to keep your gnashers looking and feeling clean and fresh, but if you fail to include flossing as part of your daily dental routine, you are only doing just over half the job. Every tooth has five surfaces, and brushing only gets to three of them (the top/bottom, back and front). If you don’t floss, it leaves the two side surfaces unclean and potentially subject to disease. Food and sticky bacteria, commonly known as plaque, lodge in the space between teeth. If left, plaque generates acid which can cause cavities, irritate gums and eventually lead to gum disease. Gum disease isn’t pretty. It eats away at gums and teeth and in advanced forms even attacks the bones that support the teeth and the lower third of the face.
27
Floss is the only thing that can get into the space between teeth to remove these harmful bacteria. If done before brushing, flossing can expose a larger area for the fluoride in the toothpaste to act upon. The best way to care for your teeth is to combine plaque removal through flossing and brushing with chemical cleaning via toothpaste and mouth wash. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Word’s getting around, our magazine is making some improvements... 28
There’s going to be a lot more to the August edition of Around Rugby in more ways than one. Firstly we’re giving the magazine a new fresh look which we’re hoping you’ll like. As part of this new look we’re going to introduce several local feature pages in conjunction with various organisations and businesses. Also we hope to get you the reader more involved in the content of the magazine by giving you the opportunity to share your photography skills through our regular ‘Capture Corner’ pages (see page 7).
Having introduced both an eighth and a sixteenth size onto the pages, it enables small businesses to reach over 7,000 households on a monthly basis where previously the cost of a larger size has held them back. This is not only good news for the advertisers, but also for the readers who will have a handy sized magazine to quickly refer to when there’s an emergency and as they are planning a project. So watch out for our next edition - dropping through your door soon!
We are also giving local small businesses the chance to promote their company with our new highly ‘affordable’ advertisement sizes.
