The new, re-branded ‘Around Rugby’ magazine. I hope you like it. For our new logo we’ve chosen something a little clearer and crisper while still maintaining our trademark pink (it’s a girly thing, you know!) You’ll also notice a number of other changes. We have the beginnings of our new ‘Capture Corner’ feature which highlights your photographs sent into our studio. Thank you to Adrian Hill for this month’s gorgeous pic. If you take a photo you’re proud of please send it in and share it with us. We’ll also add your photos to a dedicated gallery on our new website. STOP PRESS!! You can now share you photos on our new Capture Corner Facebook page too. There is a filter on these so they may not appear straight away. We’ve also enlisted some locals to contribute to the magazine each month. Frances Debonnaire from Rugby Ramblers will write about local featured walks and Erica Hyde from Ashlawn Dog Training Club has contributed again this month. Look out for another animal related feature in future editions. We have also built on our relationship with Rugby Town FC and they join us to give an insight into the world of football at local level and have kindly agreed to feature a competition on their page each month. Around Magazines continues to support the Young Enterprise scheme in Rugby and their news will still be found within our pages each month. Further interesting features will pop up over the coming months. There are still lots of opportunities to have your clubs and societies featured – so if you’re looking for more members or just want to shout out about what you do – please get in touch. We’re always looking for your positive input and ideas – so don’t hold back!
what’s going on around us than has been seen before. Don’t forget to check out our brand new website designed with you, our readers, in mind. Find us at www.aroundmagazines.co.uk. Don’t worry if you’re a current or potential advertiser - we haven’t forgotten you; we need you! So, we’ve given you a brand new website too. Check it out at www.aroundadvertising.co.uk Remember: you can always follow us on Twitter and Facebook too. This is where you’ll see what we’re up to and where we’re going between editions of the magazine and where we’ll feature you and what you’re doing in between mags too. Finally, we have no less than three competitions this month. Rugby Town FC are offering the chance of two tickets to any of their home games in October. This will be a regular feature on their page so there’ll be lots of chances to win over the footie season. The other two competitions offer fantastic prizes too. Firstly, we have the Enjoy Rugby event organisers who are offering a lucky winner two free tickets to TWO events during the programme – so don’t miss that one. The final competition has been organised by the tireless Robert Low on behalf of HAMPLIFIED. We have two tickets for their Comedy Night on October 9th up for grabs. But, be warned – we will be there too so you are quite likely to have your photo taken! Winners of the July competition were Brian Mawby, Mark Wright on behalf of Faith and Phil Matthews on behalf of William. They correctly named 2. The Argonauts as the group of men who helped Jason steal the Golden Fleece and each of them win a signed copy of ‘FLEECED’ by Julia Wills.

Young Enterprise in Rugby a New Scheme is About to Begin… Secondary schools in Rugby take part in Young Enterprise activities, along with local businesses and volunteers, with a view to building a bettermotivated, educated and enterprising workforce, while at the same time making a real difference to the existing lives and future potential of young people who live and attend school in the area. (More information can be found on the website www.young-enterprise.org.uk.). The scheme offers students aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to set up and run their own real company over the course of an academic year (from late September to Easter), with the support and guidance of volunteer advisers from business. How You Can Help: We’re looking for business people who can give an hour a week during term time, from September to April, to support and advise groups of students who are doing the Young Enterprise scheme. The groups meet for an hour a week during term time, usually on business premises (subject to premises being offered by local businesses!). While the advisors are asked to lead the meetings for the first couple of weeks, beyond that the advisors are required to counsel and guide in the meetings, rather than lead and direct. New advisors are always paired with an experienced advisor, so that they have someone to
learn from and also so that there is potential for cover to allow for times when one of the advisors is not able to attend a session. Training is given along with support materials, to all new advisors. All advisors need to be DBS checked (formerly CRB) so will need to complete a form and provide photographic ID and proofs of address.
We are also looking for business premises to host the meetings. The venues need to be in the town centre with a room with tables & chairs for up to 15 people. The room needs to be available from c.4pm to 5.30pm on the same day every week. If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise or being an advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on Newbold Road, by calling 01788 579456.

Despite there being a huge variety of great walking opportunities, both in the local countryside and further afield, not everyone feels confident about going out on their own and would maybe prefer to walk in good company and enjoy the shared experience.
Walking with Rugby Ramblers enables you to go on walks that will be in different areas both locally and further afield. We organise over a hundred walks a year graded to suit most abilities, together with a range of social activities. With the variety of walk lengths , destinations, weekday and weekend walking, we have so much to offer. The weekday walking not only suits retired people but also shift workers who maybe work some weekends. Our group is attractive to all ages.
The health benefits of walking are well documented and having a full programme of walks to choose from, you will certainly walk more often, making new friends and feel the benefit of walking in our beautiful countryside.
We have two coach trips a year to areas where it would be too far for a days walking. In March this year we went to Ironbridge, Shropshire. With a choice of three walk lengths we were all able to enjoy our lovely walks and of course ended up in a tea shop for cream tea.
If you are interested in walking with us please visit our website www.rugbyramblers.org.uk e-mail ask@rugbyramblers.org.uk or phone Fran (01788) 815 484

with Erica Hyde of: Ashlawn Dog Training Club Ashlawn Dog Training Club will have vacated their venue in Paynes Lane at the end of August as it is now required for Commercial purposes, so until we find a new permanent home we will not be taking on any new members and it is unlikely that we will run any more courses this year. One of the problems facing Dog Training Clubs is that many of the ‘halls’ which are suitable do not allow dogs or are very expensive to rent, so if you know of anywhere that we could hire, preferably on a Monday evening, at a reasonable cost please get in touch (Erica: 024 7631 3852 or email: ashlawndogtrainingclub@gmail.com).
The Certificates from the last Puppy Foundation Course and some Bronze and Silver Good Citizens Dog Scheme certificates were given out to those who had passed recently and could attend on the night. Sadly we lost Nick, one of our Trainers at the end of July as he has recently passed his grooming exams and now intends to include this service in addition to his dog walking/sitting business in Leamington.
The Club held its annual progress awards at the end of July and the Trainers agreed that the following members had achieved good improvement during the time they took part in one of the Classes (although they may no longer be in that actual class). Gold Class: Archie. Runner up: Darcey Silver Class: Snuffles. Runner up: Bruno Bronze Class: Alfie. Runner up: Milly Beginners Class: Chester. Runner up: Otis Puppy Class: Merlin. Runner up: Tallulah

We do walk whatever the weather, suitably attired of course but how we can say we enjoyed a walk when it rained all day does seem rather strange.
young. Burghley House itself looks very impressive. We also walked through Barnack Hills and Holes National Nature Reserve.
Recently we had a walk from Northleach in the Cotswolds where we had a choice of walking 11.5 or 16 miles. The forecast was for rain all day long and yet eight members turned up to do the shorter walk and five walked the 16 miles.
Our Wednesday evening walks have been very popular but finished the second week in August and we had a darts and skittles evening the following Wednesday. So that is it now until May next year.
We had a pub stop on route where we sat in a Gazebo in the garden for shelter and ordered mostly teas and coffees to warm ourselves. We had to apologise to two smokers as we were sitting where they would normally have sheltered but they were very friendly. It didn’t stop raining at all but we enjoyed ourselves. I led a walk from the delightful Medieval town of Stamford (Lincs) with its beautiful Georgian stone buildings. We walked through the grounds of Burghley House at the start of the walk and there were deer in the park with their
We have had lovely, fairly local walks of 7 or 9 miles form Radford Semele, Badby, Priors Hardwick and Eydon. Our Fenny Compton walk included walking in the Dunton Bassett Hills. Stratford on Avon was the start for us of a good 9 mile walk also Tusmore Park (Lark Rise to Candleford country). We do walk in a variety of areas and see the best of our beautiful countryside. Whatever the weather may I add. Our programme organiser Vale, always sources a poem for the front page of our programme. For our current Summer/ Autumn programme it is titled “A Poem Is a Walk” .....With the first step, the number of shapes the walk might take is infinite, but then the walk begins to “define” itself as it goes along, though freedom remains total with every step: any tempting side road can be turned into on impulse, or any wild patch of woods can be explored. The pattern of the walk is to come true, to be recognised, to be discovered..... Supporting local charities Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you'd prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group - between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help! RFF is currently welcoming volunteer Befrienders. Applicants will need to be compassionate, a good listener, and must have a sense of humour, as well as around two hours of time weekly to devote to the role. Previous experience is desirable but not essential - training in dementia awareness and ongoing support will be provided.

Visit the official club website: www.rugbytownfc.com The club’s new adventure is finally underway, and there certainly wasn’t a lack of talking points for the Valley faithful from the opening couple of competitive fixtures.
It’s a first managerial appointment for Mills at the Valley, and he has already impressed many with his enthusiasm in the role.

Despite a zero goal return and four defeats in their main warm-up games, new boss Gary Mills had been encouraged by the preparations for the 2015/16 campaign. However this optimism was soon shattered by a heavy 6-1 defeat in the opening match at Loughborough. Within three days the feel-good factor was back again though, with Town digging in for a muchdeserved 2-1 home victory against a highly-rated Gresley side. With league games coming thick and fast in the early part of the season, alongside the opening rounds of the F.A.Cup and the League Cup competitions, there’s certainly no let up for the team.
Mills is looking for the same levels of commitment from his newly-formed squad. He explained: “It’s tough to get such a large number of new players to gel together as we quickly as we need them to, but if they can keep the hard work they have shown to-date, then hopefully we can be challenging at near the top come the end.” Town are pleased to announce that local firm Revolution Driver Recruitment Solutions have once more extended their position as main club sponsor for another season. SUMMER COCKTAILS Is there anything nicer than sipping a Pimms or a G&T on a warm summer evening in the garden? Probably not but sometimes the occasion seems to call for something more...well...interesting. People are rather coy about cocktails yet many are not complicated and they always impress guests. So here is my guide to making three perfect, refreshing cocktails; two alcoholic and one for non-drinkers.
The Mojito
serves 4 • 150ml / 6fl oz light rum • 4 whole and 8 broken mint sprigs (spearmint is lovely) • 6 tbsp fresh lime juice • 4 tbsp sugar • Club soda • 4 slices lime • Ice cubes Place the ice in a beverage shaker (I’ve used a large Tupperware cup with a lid before now!) Add the rum, the 8 broken mint sprigs, the lime juice and the sugar. Shake well and pour over ice in tall glasses. Top up each glass with club soda to taste. Garnish with a slice of lime and a sprig of mint. Serve.
The Sea Breeze
serves 1 • 50 ml / 2 fl oz vodka • 50/ml / 2 fl oz cranberry juice • 50ml / 2fl oz fresh grapefruit juice • Lime wedge • Ice cubes • Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour the vodka, cranberry and grapefruit juices over the ice. Stir gently, squeeze the lime into the drink then drop it into the glass. Serve.

The Shirley Temple
serves 1 • Ice • Grenadine • Ginger Ale • 2 lemon wedges • Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour a couple of dashes of grenadine over and top up with ginger ale. Squeeze the lemon wedges over then drop into the glass. Serve.
