First things first - I would like to say a big thank you to Troy Loveridge! Troy spent two weeks with us last month on a Work Experience placement. He learned how our business operates, how our magazine is put together and how we manage our website. He was able to visit clients, research areas of interest and even have a go at writing for the magazine. Check out his Rugby Town match report in this month’s edition! Both Debbie and I enjoyed having Troy in the office and look forward to receiving more copy to include on our pages. We also have a couple of new items in the magazine this month. As you are aware, we have now opened up our charity page to all local groups who want to promote their charity, organisation or fund raising event. Please keep a check on this page to see where you can give your support. Another long term project that we are supporting also kicks in this month. Around Magazines is supporting Young Enterprise in Rugby. Again look out for their page in this edition and follow this year’s teams as they promote and sell their products, are judged on their performances and presentations and also their progress in the local, county and national competitions. If you’re not quite sure what Young Enterprise is, have a look at the information on page 28 and check out the products offered by two of the groups this year. So, what else is happening in Rugby at the moment? Apart from the vast amounts of roadwork going on around the town, we hear that planning for the new Elliot’s Field development has been officially supported by the High Court which pleases many, but not all, of Rugby’s shoppers, residents and interested parties; construction of Butterfield Gardens on Technology Drive is well underway with our new Hungry Horse restaurant now clearly visible from the road. Also the construction of Rugby’s newest care home, Anya Court on Dunchurch Road is progressing well. Another area of development has been The Pleasance in Rugby Town Centre where a wonderful Herb Garden has been introduced. A bit more greenery and a little less concrete gets the thumbs up every time for us.

While we’re on the theme of construction, I attended an FSB meeting in March at which Rugby Borough Council’s Development Strategy Manager, Sarah Fisher presented and discussed the proposed plans for the Rugby Radio Station project among others. Ms Fisher acknowledged that neither she nor the Borough Council had all the answers to everyone’s questions but, in my opinion, gave a good overview to the layperson of what, when, where and who! This is a massive project that will be ongoing for 2025 years and I was interested to find that over 6000 new homes were planned along with green spaces, primary and secondary schools and community facilities in addition to the employment based construction. It is definitely not just an extension of the huge warehouse theme of DIRFT. Work is due to start in 2015. More information can be found on the Rugby Borough Council website at www.rugby.gov.uk. On a lighter note, what are we celebrating in April? Putting April Fool’s Day (1st) aside, we have Palm Sunday and Vaisakhi on 13th, Hola Mohalla and the birthday of Guru Nanak on 14th, the first day of Passover on 15th, Maundy Thursday on 17th, Good Friday and the birthdays of Guru Angad Dev and Guru Tegh Bahadur on 18th, Easter Sunday on 20th, St Georges Day on 23rd and Yom Hashnoah on 27th. Around Rugby Competition Time! The sponsor of our competition this month is Ovenu and the prize is an oven clean worth £75.00! I’m sure lots of us feel the same about cleaning our ovens – a very necessary job but not one we relish so I would love to win this one! The winner of February’s competition was Vithiya Raja who won a makeover, beauty advice and a bag of goodies from Body Shop. She answered correctly that Anita Roddick founded The Body Shop in B) 1976. Finally, I hope the weather continues to improve and that you all have a great break over Easter.

Small Bathroom? 6

When we talk to customers in our bathroom showroom in Coventry we often get asked about small bathrooms. “Can you do anything with a small bathroom?” It seems to be a popular question and the common misconception is that a small bathroom can’t be a designer bathroom with all the trimmings. Just because your bathroom is small doesn’t mean you’re limited with your choice, and it certainly doesn’t stop you from having the bathroom of your dreams – albeit in a smaller space. There are many things to consider when designing a small bathroom and here are some of the things to focus on: Usability Above all else a bathroom is a functional room. What looks great in a showroom may not look work as well in your space at home. Always consider your space and the furniture that you choose. Think about doors into your bathroom. Imagine trying to navigate around that stunning sink and not bumping into your new shower door. Beautifully designed wall units need to be accessible and offer the ease of use at the same time. Don’t forget your wall-hung friends like the humble loo roll holder! They all take up valuable space even though they offer a much-needed service. It’s all about the entrance The true ‘wow’ factor comes from that first walk into your bathroom when you open the door and survey the view before you. Having units and furniture that flow away from you towards the outer walls will give the illusion of space. (Just think Moses and the sea!) Play around with curves and think about the shower in particular. A curved door that flows will draw the eye into the room better than a square shower cubicle will. Wash away the corners Just as curved shower doors allow your eye to flow into a small space, a curved sink will feel less imposing on the room. A softer curved basin will draw the eye away from the front and you don’t even need to compromise on the basin’s capacity in most cases. Clever Storage There’s nothing that says small and cramped more than a cluttered bathroom piled high with hygiene and beauty products. Intelligent bathroom storage will give you more space but also create the feeling of space as you won’t feel cramped or at loggerheads with your visuals. Keep your bathroom organised with wall hung units. A simple basin with a built-in unit is an excellent use of ‘dead space’.

Hidden cisterns don’t save space every time One misconception is that a wall-hung toilet will save space. This quite often isn’t the case, as the cistern needs building into your bathroom by boxing and hiding it from view. This can eat into your floor space. However, depending on the layout of the room it can visually look as though you have more space. It can give the illusion of space because you can actually see under the toilet. This will create the space in your eyes and it will add a spacious feeling to your small bathroom. Heated towel rails These are simple and effective space savers. Dry more than one towel on your radiator and alleviate the need for a towel rail on your door or wall. Heated towel rails can also be sized your bathroom so that you won’t need a radiator which saves even more space and they also come in an array of colours to suit your design. Free online planners? You get what you pay for! We’re going out on a limb here, but we don’t believe in the free online planners you can find anywhere on the web. There’s nothing more simple than putting shapes within other shapes is there? We can all do that. But what about understanding the functionality or the psychology of space? Even the 3D planners don’t give you a real idea of how your chosen bathroom will work. There’s no accounting for experience and we have that in abundance. We’re not saying don’t use them; just don’t be surprised when your new bathroom doesn’t quite work the way you’d dreamt it would. We’re always happy to chat about space, basins, showers and cubicles. CHARITY INVITES OLDER PEOPLE IN RUGBY TO JOIN THEM FOR A CUPPA, CAKE AND GOOD COMPANY! Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents to join its existing group in Rugby and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company. The charity, with the support of a volunteer network, organises tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would appreciate some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same. Over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Midlands Development Officer, Pamela Walker, said: “Activities for people aged 75 and above are normally limited to weekdays, so Sunday can be a particularly long and difficult day. Our tea parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have, so they can make a real difference. We wanted to make people aware that the Rugby group is looking for guests and to encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch with us. Information Suite Opening Soon at Anya Court A cutting-edge care home in Rugby will open its Information Suite this month, giving local residents a first peek at what they can expect from the 70-bed development. Anya Court Care Home on Dunchurch Road, opening in autumn 2014, will offer residential, nursing and dementia care. The home is the first in the area from Hallmark Care Homes, an award-winning care provider with homes across England and South Wales.

Young Enterprise is the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading business and enterprise education charity. Secondary schools in Rugby take part in Young Enterprise activities, supported by local businesses and volunteers, with a view to building a better-motivated, educated and enterprising workforce, while at the same time making a real difference to the existing lives and future potential of young people who live and attend school in the area. The scheme offers students aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to set up and run their own real company over the course of an academic year, with the support and guidance of volunteer advisers from business. Typically meeting for an hour a week during term time, usually on business premises in the local area, students elect a board of directors from amongst their peers, raise share capital, market and finance a real product or service of their own choice and sell it to the public. Through participating in the programme, they develop their enterprise knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes in a business context. They learn by doing, while coping with a changing and evolving business, and developing essential skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, managing risk, creativity, innovation and leadership. This year there are six groups, two of which are advertising their products here. The four other groups are Probitas, Odyssey, Bake-it Baskets and Just in Case. Products and services being developed and sold include phone cases, 3D printing, chopping boards, baking equipment in baskets, portable trolley attachments, and a Harris School yearbook.
