Your local community magazine supporting local business
AUGUST 2014 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,300 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.
Welcome to the August edition of Around Rugby! 2
First things first, well done to all those ladies who completed the Cancer Research Race For Life last month and apologies to you for not being there to support you – unfortunately life got in the way! But you were in my thoughts and everyone at Around Magazines is very proud of you! Congratulations also to all involved in the Hamplified festival at St Andrews RFC for making the best of a day of dreadful weather. With the outdoors in mind, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far (flood days excepted) and that you are staying safe in the sun, wherever you might encounter it! Remember you can still burn, even if it’s cloudy out there. August sees our last Bank Holiday (25th) before the Christmas break so make the most of it – it’s a long wait until the end of December. Other dates to note this month are Tisha B’Av (a day of commemoration) on the 5th, International Youth Awareness Day on the 12th and World Humanitarian Day on the 19th. Rugby is also commemorating World War One (1914-1918) during August. On the 3rd there will be a civic service at St Andrew’s Church, on the 4th we are invited to share and reflect on one of the darkest periods in our history and join in a ‘Lights Out’ event and on the 5th the Town centre will host a parade re-enacting the signing up process and marching off to war. There will be a World War One enlisting station where families and individuals can sign up, go through a medical, learn rudimentary drills and training and will finally be invited to ‘fall in’ behind a military band and parade through the town centre to Caldecott Park where an open air service will be held at the bandstand. Activities will continue in the park including military displays, a replica World War One tank and a selection of art activities. If you would like more information or would like to register to take part, visit www.rugby.gov.uk . You can also find more information here on the summer activities still available at Rugby Art Gallery & Museum.

More green news for Rugby this month – the new plans for the old allotment area off Parkfield Road, Newbold, which was compulsorily purchased when the Western Relief Road was built, are available to view. The plans include play spaces, wildlife zones, picnic areas, a meadow and a butterfly garden. Visit www.rugby.gov.uk for more info and to have your say. Of course, we also have the ‘Back to School’ countdown! Check on the new term dates on our ‘Useful Information’ page (and don’t forget to check on your school’s own website for training days specific to them). But before you get too tied up with new uniform, pencil cases and ‘Frozen’ lunch boxes, there’s still a whole month to enjoy! So why not keep your eyes on our Facebook and Twitter pages for things to do with your family in August. Once the children are back into the school routine, you can turn your attention to other things for September – your garden, maybe? Our August competition is sponsored by Rimo Growers @ Medda Place, Coventry Road, Thurlaston. The prize is a £20.00 voucher to spend across the Rimo range. That’s great news if your garden needs a little refreshing or you need to stock up for Autumn. The winner of our June competition was Yasmin Robinson who won two games of bowling for six people at Superbowl, Junction One! Yasmin correctly answered that the highest score you can achieve in a standard game of bowling is b) 300. Lastly, a big ‘Thank you’ to Brownsover Community School for inviting me to their ‘Thank You Assembly’ on 16th July. Around Magazines are proud to have supported you and hope we can continue to help in the coming years.

CHARITY INVITES OLDER PEOPLE IN RUGBY TO JOIN THEM FOR A CUPPA, CAKE AND GOOD COMPANY! Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents to join its existing group in Rugby and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company. The charity, with the support of a volunteer network, organises tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would appreciate some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same. Over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Midlands Development Officer, Pamela Walker, said: “Activities for people aged 75 and above are normally limited to weekdays, so Sunday can be a particularly long and difficult day. Our tea parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have, so they can make a real difference. We wanted to make people aware that the Rugby group is looking for guests and to encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch with us. Rugby residents, aged 75 and above, who live alone, without the support of family and friends, and who are interested in joining the Rugby Contact the Elderly group can contact Pamela Walker, Midlands Development Officer on 0121 603 1331 or email pamela.walker@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

Background to the scheme: Secondary schools in Rugby take part in Young Enterprise activities, along with local businesses and volunteers, with a view to building a better-motivated, educated and enterprising workforce, while at the same time making a real difference to the existing lives and future potential of young people who live and attend school in the area. (More information can be found on the website – www.young-enterprise.org.uk.). The scheme offers students aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to set up and run their own real company over the course of an academic year (from late September to Easter), with the support and guidance of volunteer advisers from business. How ‘the public’ can help: We’re looking for business people who can give an hour a week during term time, from September to April, to support and advise groups of students who are doing the Young Enterprise scheme. The groups meet for an hour a week during term time, usually on business premises (subject to premises being offered by local businesses!). While the advisors are asked to lead the meetings for the first couple of weeks, beyond that the advisors are required to counsel and guide in the meetings, rather than lead and direct. New advisors are always paired with an experienced advisor, so that they have someone to learn from and also so that there is potential for cover to allow for times when one of the advisors is not able to attend a session. Training is given along with support materials, to all new advisors. All advisors need to be DBS checked (formerly CRB) so will need to complete a form and provide photographic ID and proofs of address. We are also looking for business premises to host the meetings. The venues need to be in the town centre with a room with tables & chairs for up to 15 people. The room needs to be available from 4pm to 5.30pm on the same day every week. If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise or being an advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway on 01788 579456
