Your local community magazine supporting local business
DECEMBER 2013 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,000 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.
Welcome to the December edition of Around Rugby! Hello there! Here we are in December again; hasn’t 2013 flown by? It will soon be time to reflect on this year’s resolutions and set about trying again in 2014. But, before we get to January, we have a couple of exciting bits of news this month. Some of you may have spotted a strange new symbol on our front cover this month. We are proud to announce that we are the first magazine in our area to become interactive! Look out for the page that tells you all about ‘Layar’, download the free app onto your smart phone and try it out on the Regal Dry Cleaners advertisement. Make sure you grab a copy of January’s magazine that will include more interactive pages with ‘buttons’ for you to ‘press’. If we are not delivering to your area, look out for copies at our drop off points across town or call our office and we’ll do our best to get one to you. Have fun! We would also like to take this opportunity to let you know that our online directory, Around Rugby has been re-launched. Please visit www. aroundrugby.co.uk or www.aroundme.co.uk/ rugby to see a brighter looking site with many new features. You will notice that you can now read our magazine and enter the monthly competitions as well as search for businesses and events, read blogs, check out special offers, read press releases and catch up on local news. We also have the facility for our advertisers to list vacancies and members of the public to sell items free of charge.
24th, Christmas Day on 25th and St Stephen’s Day on 26th. Of course, there will also be many of us who celebrate the bringing in of the New Year on 31st/1st January. I don’t know about you, but this year, I intend to enjoy without over-indulging! This month, we would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all those who took part in last month’s ‘Movember’ and grew some amazing moustaches in aid of men’s health issues. I have seen a number of very well tended, and often hilarious, examples and salute you all. We have made a donation on behalf of our magazine, website and online directory. Around Rugby Competition Time! The sponsor of this month’s competition is Rugby Theatre. The prize is two tickets to this season’s pantomime ‘Robinson Crusoe and the Pirates’. Get your entries in quickly this month as we draw the winner on 24 December not the end of the month as usual. The winner of October’s competition was Mrs Payne who correctly named b) white as the colour of the flower of Galanthus nivalis (snowdrop). Mrs Payne won a £20 voucher to use across the Rimo range which was kindly donated by Rimo Growers @ Medda Place, Coventry Road, Thurlaston. Finally, Around Magazines would like to wish all our readers and advertisers, past and present, a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Whether you advertise with us, read our printed magazines or view online through www.aroundmagazines.co.uk or www.aroundrugby.co.uk , we do appreciate you!

Frosty mornings, winter evenings and the smell of mulled wine in the air – Christmas is just around the corner and we have lots of ways you can support us during the festive season. Are you keen to burn a few extra calories before Christmas? If so why not take part in our annual Santa Dashes. This year we are holding events at Coventry Memorial Park on Sunday 8th December and from our Warwick Hospice and around St Nicholas Park on Sunday 15th December. Entrants can walk, jog or run the 5km routes and we will even give you a free Santa suit and a medal on completion of the event. Registration costs £10 and we ask entrants to raise as much sponsorship as possible for Myton. Just think of all the guilt-free roast potatoes and chocolates you will be able to eat after taking part! And if that is not enough to tempt you JD and Rosin from Free Radio Coventry and Warwickshire’s breakfast show will be on hand to cheer on dashers at our Coventry event. To find out more, buy Santa Dash t-shirts and sign up today visit www.mytonhospice.org And if running is not your thing how about taking part in our Wear a Santa Suit to work day with your office buddies or work colleagues?
Registration for this costs just £5 and we are asking businesses to raise as much money as possible for Myton. Interested? Call Rosie Houghton on 01926 838 817. We would like to say a huge thank you to members of our Rugby Support Group who raised £1,001 for us at their Bazaar. The event was held on Saturday 9th November at our Rugby Day Hospice and we would like to thank those who donated items, came along and volunteered on the day. Our Rugby Support Group did a fantastic job and we are very lucky to have them. On Sunday 1st December we will be holding our annual Light up a Life service at our Rugby Day Hospice in Barby Road. The event will start at 6pm and Rugby residents are invited to sponsor a light on our Christmas tree in memory of a loved one in return for a donation to Myton. To find out more visit www.mytonhospice.org or call our events team on 01926 838 815. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the past year and wish all our supporters and patients a peaceful Christmas and New Year.
It is a great way to spread some serious festive cheer and there is no running involved – unless you want there to be of course!

A Christmas wreath 18
You know that Christmas is coming when you hang a festive wreath on your front door, says Katherine Sorrell. Zinc wreath candle holder, £22.95, Love from Rosie (07817 484698; www.lovefromrosie.co.uk)
Christmas is undoubtedly a time of traditions: perhaps midnight mass, roast turkey and the Queen’s Speech, followed by a snooze in front of the TV and a few board games. But some traditions are older than others. The custom of making wreaths goes all the way back to ancient Greece. It was here that wearing a laurel wreath came to represent status, achievement and victory. For the Romans, it was the supreme ruler who wore a wreath embellished with gold and jewels. Meanwhile, in Celtic Germany and Scandinavia, wreaths were employed for a different purpose: sun worship. In the long, dark days of winter people prayed for the onset of spring, and to give extra power to their prayers they used a wreath, hung from the roof or placed on an altar or a table. The wreath was woven with evergreens, a symbol of everlasting life, and decorated with candles, which represented the light of the sun. As Christianity spread through Europe, the pagan evergreen wreath was reinterpreted. Its circular shape stood for God’s eternity, the immortality of the soul and the everlasting life found in Christ. Evergreens, as before, symbolised eternal life, while holly represented the crown of
thorns. It is possible that using a wreath to count down the four weeks of advent became a Christian custom in 16th century Germany, and it is likely that the modern advent wreath was invented by a German pastor called Johann Hinrich Wichern. Asked by the children at his mission school how long it was until Christmas, Wichern took an old cartwheel and stuck 19 small candles into it as well as four large candles, then lit one small candle each weekday and one large candle every Sunday until Christmas arrived. Christmas wreaths are still a powerful symbol of celebration. For some families, Christmas starts with the making of a natural wreath using leaves, flowers and seed heads from the garden; for others, tinsel, glitter or ribbon provide a chance to experiment. But Christmas wreaths don’t have to be home-made: there are endless varieties of readymade styles, from traditional to modern, large or tiny, simple or extravagant. Whatever their style and wherever you display them, wreaths are a decorative essential for the Christmas season.
By Katherine Sorrell
How to make your own Christmas wreath 1. If you don’t want to buy a ready-made base, you can easily make your own. Either shape a wire coat hanger into a circle (keeping the hook for hanging) or use bundles of twiggy growth from your garden (willow or honeysuckle vine work well) bound firmly with garden string, raffia, florist wire or climber stems. 2. Attach evergreen sprigs such as conifer, holly, laurel or ivy. Bind them at the bottom, then overlap the next sprig or group of sprigs in the same direction. Keep going until the base is completely covered. 3. Finish as you like, choosing from a variety of interesting decorations, such as fresh, dried or artificial flowers, ribbons, berries, raffia, moss, fir cones, seed heads, nuts, dried fruit, poppy heads, tinsel, glitter, baubles, sweets, feathers, buttons and beads. 4, Attach a strong loop of wire or string and hang where you wish, or simply prop your wreath on a shelf or mantelpiece.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? While looking for inspiration for lyrics to a song that I was going to perform at an open mic night, I was reminded about an event from my own teenage years which I had forgotten about, but on reflection it had quite a profound effect on my later life. Of course, being a teenager, it was a lack of judgement, it wasn’t meant maliciously but the consequences were serious enough at the time. I was lucky not to have got into quite a lot of trouble. Things were different back then, in the nineteen seventies. Why is it that young people, especially the boys, indulge in youthful excess with complete disregard for the potential consequences? Neuroscientists have identified that the brain continues to develop long after our childhood. Full organic maturity occurs as late as our mid-thirties, and the last part of the brain to develop is the pre-orbital cortex; the part responsible for evaluation of risk and consequence. This often results in young men making rash decisions, and sometimes being criminalised. The lack of ability to evaluate consequence and a surplus of testosterone can be a powerful combination promoting recklessness. Our beliefs about ourselves are shaped by such events, and can often continue to influence the decisions we make for many years to come; if not for the rest of our lives. Rarely do we let ourselves get away with anything, and we are often more harsh with our own punishments than society would otherwise have been. Where we experience guilt because of some wrong doing, we may subsequently see ourselves as being undeserving of success or happiness. If we reveal ourselves to be less than we would like others to think, and feel shame, this might suggest that we are unworthy and un-loveable. Unconsciously carrying the burden of poor decisions or inappropriate actions in the past influence the decisions we make in later life, even though the original event is forgotten, the beliefs formed at the time about ourselves remain. When we recognise our faults and failings as evidence of our human fallibility rather than proving our lack of worth, it makes it a little easier to forgive ourselves and others. Want to hear the song? Search on Youtube for George Houguez. They aren’t studio recordings, but I hope you enjoy them nonetheless. Have a happy Christmas, and may the New Year bring you peace and fulfilment in all areas of your lives.
