Your local community magazine supporting local business
June 2015 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,300 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.
Welcome to the June edition of Around Rugby! 2
Right, we’re hitting the half way point of the year now. How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Are you flying ahead or have you fallen by the wayside? Actually, I’ve got a confession to make – I haven’t even started yet. My plans and deadlines have been continually pushed back for one reason or another but, it’s never too late and I have a strong feeling that, if not June, then July will be my month! So, a quick recap on May - Did you get a chance to go to Rugby Bike Fest? We had a great time. We saw some amazing bikes, listened to some awesome music (well done again, guys!), visited several interesting stands and chatted to some fascinating characters. Last month also saw the Rugby FM Pride of Rugby Awards held at Dunchurch Park Hotel. We were unable to attend this year, but hear it was another successful event. Look out for the list of winners in this edition. While we’re on the subject, congratulations to Jo and Christian Wilson of Swim Works for their Business Person of the Year award and to Brethertons LLP for topping the Business of the Year category. Our special congratulations go to Annette Collier for winning Carer of the Year for a third year running! Here at Around Magazines we know what a fantastic job you do and how much you are appreciated. Enough of May, what’s going on in June? In our schools, A level’s and GCSE’s continue to dominate the lives of our offspring as they wrestle with their timetables of revision and relaxation; parents struggle to contain all of their little darlings as they realise that their summer holidays are just around the corner, and decide to shut down a little too early; and those of us trapped in offices,

warehouses and other confined spaces stick our heads out of the window at every available opportunity in order to catch some sun before it disappears again. Unfortunately we have no more Bank Holidays to look forward to until August so long evenings and weekends will have to accommodate our thoughts of warm summer days and balmy nights. Don’t forget Lailat al Bara’ah on 1st, the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev on 16th and the beginning of Ramadan on 18th. Most of all, remember it is Father’s Day on 21st! Competition time: We are lucky enough to have two competitions running this month and they’re both aimed at entertaining the younger members of your household during the long summer break. Firstly we have a fantastic prize of a family ticket (two adults and two children) to Twycross Zoo. For our second competition we have 3 prizes to give away. Author Julia Wills is promoting her book ‘Fleeced’ along with her newest addition ‘Rampage’ and has kindly agreed to sign some copies of ‘Fleeced’ for us to give away. Again, this is a great prize you can share with the children in your family. Both competitions will be drawn on 30th June. Good luck! Psst! Here’s a secret – Julia has donated 3 more copies of ‘Fleeced’ so we’re running the competition again in July. If you don’t win this month, make sure you get a copy of the July magazine for a second chance to win.

Anyone for Tennis? It’s Wimbledon fortnight
3
A broken pony-roller belonging to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club was the catalyst which led to the birth of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon. When the roller broke in 1877 the members decided to hold a lawn tennis competition to raise funds for repair. There were 22 male competitors who each paid a one guinea entrance fee. The champion was 27-year-old Spencer Gore who won 12 guineas and yes, it did rain on the day of the finals! In spite of the weather the competition was such a success that it became an annual event. In fact there have been only ten Wimbledon-free years since that first competition: four years during the First World War and six during the Second World War. At the start the only event was the gentlemen’s singles. Then, in 1884 the ladies’ singles and the gentlemen’s doubles were added, followed by the ladies’ doubles and the mixed doubles in 1913. Only top-ranked amateurs were allowed to play until 1968 when the tournament became ‘open’, meaning that professionals could finally enter. The British dominated The Championships, as they are known, for the first 30 years: Ernest and William Renshaw, and Laurie and Reggie Doherty were national heroes. But our winning streak didn’t
last. Until recently the last British man to win at Wimbledon was Fred Perry in 1936. He won a hat trick of titles just before the Second World War. Then, in the glorious summer of 2013 Andy Murray finally brought the title home to Britain and won the heart of the nation. He’s on a high this year having married his fiancé Kim Sears in the spring. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he made this a real fairytale year and won Wimbledon again? Wimbledon: Fascinating Facts The first black person to win Wimbledon was a woman, the American Althea Gibson, in 1957 and 1958. The first, and only, black male to win was Arthur Ashe, who beat Jimmy Connors in 1975. The last British woman to win Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in the silver Jubilee year, 1977. It is the only tennis competition where players are required to wear all or predominantly white clothing. In 2002 Anna Kournikova had to change her black shorts for white ones on court! Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries, 7,000 litres of cream, 60,000 pints of Pimms and 14,000 bottles of Champagne are consumed by spectators during Wimbledon. By Louise Addison

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon Wellington is dead. He was killed with a fork. That’s not quite so odd though. It was a garden fork. Discovering the body of his neighbour’s dog, 15 year old Christopher is determined to find out what happens so he decides to do some ‘detecting’. What he discovers will tell him so much more than just who killed Wellington. As a reader you see the world through Christopher’s eyes. A world where maths is in charge and helps to make sense of everything. A world where seeing five red cars in a row is a sign of a ‘super good day.’ Christopher has Asperger’s Syndrome: a form of high functioning autism. This means that he doesn’t see things the same as others do. Facial expressions are difficult to decode – his teacher gives him clues to help him – and metaphors are just confusing and don’t really help you to understand things because you have to spend so much time trying to work out what it means. This highly acclaimed novel is an insight into a world inhabited by many people, but alien to most of the population. Haddon also brings out the difficulties of raising a child with Asperger’s. His widowed father tries to be patient but struggles with the lack of emotion from his son. In many ways Christopher has a better way of coping with life as he can shut himself away in a world ruled by algebra, patterns, and prime numbers. Written in the first person, Christopher’s ‘voice’ is distinctive and original. As the novel draws towards its rewarding ending you will feel reluctant to leave him as he takes the next steps through life, telling us, “I can do anything.” And like many people with Asperger’s, he just might. Microchipping Pets A special syringe and needle are used to implant the chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. The insertion isn’t painful and a check will be made using a handheld device immediately afterwards to ensure that the chip’s data is readable. The code and owners details are then stored on a national database. It is important to update your details on the database if you move.
From April 2016 it will be compulsory for a dog to be microchipped in the UK. But what is a microchip and what does it do? Microchipping seeks to aid reuniting lost or stolen pets with their owners with their pets. It should be used in conjunction with the usual tag and collar. The computer microchip contains a unique identity number and is housed in a type of glass which is compatible with living tissue. The whole thing is about the size of a grain of rice.
Many pets are suitable for microchipping including dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. Charities such as the Dogs Trust are so passionate about its importance that they offer it for free at their rehoming centres and run chipping roadshow events throughout the year. Vets and other organisations charge for microchipping, and costs will vary depending on the size of your pet and where you live. From April 2016 it will be compulsory for a dog to be microchipped in the UK. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you'd prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group – between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help! RFF is currently welcoming volunteer Befrienders. Applicants will need to be compassionate, a good listener, and must have a sense of humour, as well as around two hours of time weekly to devote to the role. Previous experience is desirable but not essential – training in dementia awareness and ongoing support will be provided.

Fancy getting your hoofs onto one of the funniest children’s books around? 20
Then enter our free draw to win one of three copies of Julia Wills’ ‘Fleeced!’, published by Piccadilly Press. With its fresh twist on the Ancient Greek myths, ‘Fleeced!’ tells what happens when Aries, the bald ram whose Golden Fleece was stolen by Jason and the Argonauts, wins a chance to return to modern day Earth to rescue his beautiful coat. Hilarity and mayhem follow in this fast-paced adventure, which was voted by a nationwide panel of librarians and children onto last year’s UK Arts Council Summer Reading Challenge. Since then the book has gained great reviews on
Amazon, The Guardian Children’s website and from fellow children’s authors. Find out for yourself what all the giggling is about in this free book giveaway. ‘Fleeced!’ and its sequel ‘Rampage!’ are available from Amazon and all good bookshops.
About JULIA Wills Although Julia Wills was born in the last century this absolutely does not make her as old as the Ancient Greeks she tells stories about. However, she does admit to writing for just about as long as she’s been able to hold a pen. As a child Julia wanted to be either a vet or a ballerina. Luckily, she opted for writing instead, otherwise by now she’d be busy harassing hamsters whilst wearing a glittering tutu. After studying Psychology at Oxford University, Julia completed her teacher training at Northampton and a distance-learning Masters in Writing at Glamorgan (now the New University of South Wales). Writing in her free time, she has always worked in various day jobs, such as maintaining a photo library for a Texan oil company, tasting sausages, working for batty professors at Oxford and teaching Year Four children in Northamptonshire. It was here, in the classroom, as Miss Wills, that she discovered just how much children love learning about the Ancient Greeks, their fabulous monsters and glitzy heroes, and most importantly of all, how children love a good laugh when they read.
