Welcome to the May edition of Around Rugby! 2

I hope you all had a great Easter break and didn’t overindulge too much. I have to congratulate myself and say that I didn’t this year. Although, I have to also admit that by the time Easter arrived, I had seen so much chocolate I couldn’t face eating any. That may have had something to do with all of those prize Easter Eggs that resided in my house in the weeks’ preceding the big weekend. If you follow us on Facebook, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about! Congratulations to all those who did, indeed, win an egg. While I’m at it, congratulations to Brooke School too! They held a charity auction in March and raised a whopping £1916! Our thanks go to everyone who helped them achieve such a fabulous total and especially those who attended after seeing their invitation in the March edition of Around Rugby or in the ‘What’s On’ listings of aroundme.co.uk/rugby. On the theme of celebrations, what do we have in store in May? Well, we can look forward to not one, but TWO Bank Holidays! We have May Day on 5th and Spring Bank Holiday on 26th. We also celebrate the birthday of Guru Arjan Dev on 2nd, Yom Hazikaron on 4th, Yom Ha’atzmaut on 5th, Wesak (Buddha Day) on 14th, the birthday of Guru Amar Das on 23rd, Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) on 28th and Ascension Day on 29th. On May 9th we also celebrate business and community in Rugby at The Rugby FM Pride of Rugby Awards 2014. A list of finalists can be found in this month’s magazine. Interviews with a selection of the winners will be included in the June edition. We now have a couple of new items of local interest in the magazine. As you are aware, we have opened up our charity page to all local groups who want to promote their charity, organisation or fund raising event. Please keep a check on this page to see where you can give your support. Another long term project that we are supporting also kicked in last month. Around Magazines is supporting Young Enterprise in Rugby. Again, look out for their page in this edition and follow this year’s teams as they promote and sell their products, are judged on their performances and presentations and also their progress in the local, county and national competitions. If you’re not quite sure what Young Enterprise is, have a look at their page where you can also see how each team fared in

the local competition. So, what else is happening in Rugby at the moment? Apart from the vast amounts of roadwork going on around the town, we hear that planning for the new Elliot’s Field development has been officially supported by the High Court which pleases many, but not all, of Rugby’s shoppers, residents and interested parties; construction of Butterfield Gardens on Technology Drive is well underway and our new Hungry Horse restaurant, The Steam Turbine, is clearly visible from the road; the construction of Rugby’s newest care home, Anya Court on Dunchurch Road is progressing well and The Pleasance in Rugby Town Centre has a wonderful new Herb Garden. While we’re on the theme of construction, and for those of you who didn’t get a chance to see last month’s edition, I attended a meeting in March at which Rugby Borough Council’s Development Strategy Manager, Sarah Fisher presented and discussed the proposed plans for the Rugby Radio Station project among others. Ms Fisher, in my opinion, gave a good overview to the layperson of what, when, where and who! This is a massive project that will be ongoing for 20-25 years and I was interested to find that over 6000 new homes were planned along with green spaces, primary and secondary schools and community facilities in addition to the employment based construction. It is definitely not just an extension of the huge warehouse theme of DIRFT. Work is due to start in 2015 and more information can be found on the Rugby Borough Council website at www.rugby.gov.uk. Around Rugby Competition Time! The sponsor of our competition this month is Rugby Tap and the prize is a £30.00 Gift Voucher to spend in the shop. This would be a great prize if you’re looking for something for your Dad or Grandad for Fathers Day in June. The winner of our March competition was Sarah Coleman who won a main course lunch for two people at The Golden Lion, Easenhall. She answered correctly that the name of the donkey that used to live at The Golden Lion was A) Charlotte.

CHARITY INVITES OLDER PEOPLE IN RUGBY TO JOIN THEM FOR A CUPPA, CAKE AND GOOD COMPANY! Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents to join its existing group in Rugby and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company. The charity, with the support of a volunteer network, organises tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would appreciate some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same. Over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Midlands Development Officer, Pamela Walker, said: “Activities for people aged 75 and above are normally limited to weekdays, so Sunday can be a particularly long and difficult day. Our tea parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have, so they can make a real difference. We wanted to make people aware that the Rugby group is looking for guests and to encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch with us. Information Suite Opening Soon at Anya Court A cutting-edge care home in Rugby will open its Information Suite this month, giving local residents a first peek at what they can expect from the 70-bed development. Anya Court Care Home on Dunchurch Road, opening in autumn 2014, will offer residential, nursing and dementia care. The home is the first in the area from Hallmark Care Homes, an award-winning care provider with homes across England and South Wales.

Outstanding facilities

The home will include two cafes, a corner shop and even a cinema. Landscaped gardens will surround the home and the first floor balcony will give residents beautiful views of the surrounding area. To enable residents to mark special occasions with friends and family, the home will include a celebrations room, which can be booked out for birthdays, anniversaries and other important occasions. Residents will be able to enjoy the therapy room and hair salon or help out with their laundry, if they wish, in the specially designed residentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s laundry room.

Dementia community
