SEPTEMBER 2014 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,300 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.

Welcome to the September edition of Around Rugby! 2

September sees the start of the new academic year for many of our schools along with the cooler weather that signals Autumn is upon us. Celebrations this month are scarce and focus on 25th with the start of Navaratri and Rosh Hashanah. We may also remember the continued theme of War and the terrorist events of 9/11. Also from our history books, 2nd September 1666, saw The Great Fire of London begin in a bakers shop in Pudding Bag Lane. On a slightly lighter note, last month I attended a Dementia Friends session at Anya Court Care Home where I learned more about the signs of Dementia and how I can best support those affected. If anyone is interested in learning about Dementia I would strongly recommend visiting www.dementiafriends.org.uk where you can access a wealth of information as well as book an information session here in Rugby. I found it an hour very well spent. I am so excited about this month too! I’ve been invited to a Special Assembly at Brownsover Community School on 19th. Their special guest is Mark Wood, Explorer!!! Mark is from Coventry, my home city and I’m really looking forward to hearing about his polar adventures. Various sites in Rugby also take part in Heritage Day activities again this month. Look out for opportunities to take guided tours or wander at your leisure around places such as Coombe Abbey, Brownsover Hall Hotel, Arnold House and Masonic Hall along with a selection of churches in the area between 11th and 14th

September. There is a wealth of historical information available and many beautiful places to visit here in Rugby. Check our online What’s On page at www.aroundme.co.uk/rugby for more information. Some tours do have limited spaces so will need to be booked in advance. If heritage is not your thing, don’t forget that the Rugby Food & Drink Festival along with the Real Ale Trail begins on 25th and continues over the weekend ending on 28th. There will be lots of opportunities across the town centre to experience the Festival and, of course, across Rugby to experience real ale. On a less energetic or calorie filled note our September competition is sponsored by Cineworld, Junction One Retail Park, Rugby. The prize is two Cinema tickets to a 2D or 3D film of your choice at any Cineworld site. With some amazing films out at the moment, this is a great prize. The winner of our July competition was Beverley Masterman who won a two course meal for two at Frankie & Benny’s. Beverley correctly answered that Frankie & Benny’s serve A) Italian American food. Finally, on a personal note, I would like to send my congratulations to an old teaching practice buddy of mine. Julia Wills had her first children’s book published this year (and if you were really lucky, you managed to get a signed copy at Rugby Library last month). CONGRATULATIONS to you Julia and let’s hope that ‘Fleeced’ is just the beginning of an amazing adventure for you.

CHARITY INVITES OLDER PEOPLE IN RUGBY TO JOIN THEM FOR A CUPPA, CAKE AND GOOD COMPANY! Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents to join its existing group in Rugby and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company. The charity, with the support of a volunteer network, organises tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would appreciate some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same. Over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Midlands Development Officer, Pamela Walker, said: “Activities for people aged 75 and above are normally limited to weekdays, so Sunday can be a particularly long and difficult day. Our tea parties are sometimes the only social outing our guests have, so they can make a real difference. We wanted to make people aware that the Rugby group is looking for guests and to encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch with us. Rugby residents, aged 75 and above, who live alone, without the support of family and friends, and who are interested in joining the Rugby Contact the Elderly group can contact Pamela Walker, Midlands Development Officer on 0121 603 1331 or email pamela.walker@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

BACKGROUND TO THE SCHEME: Secondary schools in Rugby take part in Young Enterprise activities, along with local businesses and volunteers, with a view to building a better-motivated, educated and enterprising workforce, while at the same time making a real difference to the existing lives and future potential of young people who live and attend school in the area. (More information can be found on the website – www.young-enterprise.org.uk.). The scheme offers students aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to set up and run their own real company over the course of an academic year (from late September to Easter), with the support and guidance of volunteer advisers from business. HOW ‘THE PUBLIC’ CAN HELP: We’re looking for business people who can give an hour a week during term time, from September to April, to support and advise groups of students who are doing the Young Enterprise scheme. The groups meet for an hour a week during term time, usually on business premises (subject to premises being offered by local businesses!). While the advisors are asked to lead the meetings for the first couple of weeks, beyond that the advisors are required to counsel and guide in the meetings, rather than lead and direct. New advisors are always paired with an experienced advisor, so that they have someone to learn from and also so that there is potential for cover to allow for times when one of the advisors is not able to attend a session. Training is given along with support materials, to all new advisors. All advisors need to be DBS checked (formerly CRB) so will need to complete a form and provide photographic ID and proofs of address. We are also looking for business premises to host the meetings. The venues need to be in the town centre with a room with tables & chairs for up to 15 people. The room needs to be available from 4pm to 5.30pm on the same day every week. If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise or being an advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway on 01788 579456

In 1804 Littlecote passed into the hands of the Leyborne-Pophams and throughout the centuries has been visited by royalty such as Henry VIII who courted Jane Seymour at Littlecote, Charles II and William of Orange.
