DECEMBER 2014 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,300 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.

Welcome to the December edition of Around Rugby! 2

It’s that time again! 2014 is almost at an end and we look forward to Christmas and then a brand new year. Apart from Christmas Day on 25th, St Stephen’s Day/ Boxing Day on 26th and New Year’s Eve on 31st we also celebrate Hanukkah this month (17th – 24th) and the shortest day of the year on 21st. If you’re planning to indulge over the festive period, take care and don’t overdo it (well, not every day anyway!). Thinking about 2015 and what the New Year holds for Rugby, I realise that we have a lot to look forward to. Eleven cities across England plus Cardiff host the Rugby World Cup starting in September and with Leicester, Birmingham and Milton Keynes being amongst them, we are sure to see a good amount of tourist interest here. We can look forward to plenty of rugby based entertainment and activity throughout the year with educational, cultural and sporting programmes planned. We also have lots of construction continuing into 2015 with the new Elliott’s Field complex, further retail development along Technology Drive and more work at Rugby Gateway.

Moving on, Competition time! Our competition sponsor this month is The Golden Lion at Easenhall who are offering a prize of two main courses (Monday to Saturday). The winner will be notified as soon after New Year as possible. The winner of our October competition was Barbara Rod who won two main meals and two drinks at The Holly Bush, Lawford Road. Barbara correctly answered that the event held on the last Sunday of each month is c) Comedy Night.

Finally, Around Magazines would like to wish all our readers and advertisers, both past and present, a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Whether you advertise with us in our magazine or online, read our printed magazines, view them online or follow us on Facebook or Twitter, thank you for your support during 2014 and we look forward to your company in 2015. Have a joyous festive season!

Amanda

A quick ‘thank you’ now to all those who took part in the moustache growing, fund raising phenomenon that is Movember. I have seen some amazing sights that were obviously grown for the event and are unlikely to be seen again until next year. Well done to all cultivators and supporters alike – I’m sure your contribution was greatly received on behalf of The Movember Foundation. MERRY CHRISTMAS

For a full list visit www.royalmail.com

Top five wildlife gifts Forget selection boxes and dodgy Christmas jumpers; for a present that lasts all year round, doesn't cost the earth and helps animals and insects at the same time, then you should opt for a wildlife gift. Be it a bird feeder or house, a hedgehog habitat or a cosy toad and frog den, your wildlife gift will really help to bring colour, beauty and joy to any garden, long after most gifts have been forgotten, as well as helping to nurture animal and insect life all winter long. If you are still wondering what to get, check out the following wildlife gift ideas that will be a welcome addition to any Christmas stocking this year. 1. Hedgehog habitat Hedgehogs are the gardener's friend as they like to eat slugs and snails. However, in the last ten years it has been estimated that a quarter of the hedgehog population has been lost in the UK, according to the RSPB. So why not do your bit to help your prickly garden chum? A hedgehog habitat gives these shy creatures somewhere quiet to snuggle, out of the elements.

a sugar and water solution to emulate nectar. This will not only attract butterflies, but also moths and bees and is a great gift for children as well as adults to learn more about nature. These are available at www.worm.co.uk for £29.95. 4. Toad and Frog house The humble toad and frog often get overlooked in favour of their more cute and cuddly wildlife friends, such as the hedgehog and bumble bee. However, these gentle and shy amphibians often find it difficult to find shelter in the winter. This is why providing a stable and warm toad and frog house could be a life-saver for these animals this winter. If possible, situate the box in a wilder area of your garden to avoid disturbance. These are available from www.gardensupplydirect.co.uk for £35.17.

Pick one up from the RSPB online shop www.shopping. rspb.org.uk for £44.99. 2. Ladybird and Lacewing box Ladybirds and Lacewings are both natural predators of aphids and greenfly, which make them a valuable ally to a keen gardener. So what better gift to give your green-fingered friends than a Ladybird and Lacewing box to help reduce or totally eliminate the need for chemical pesticides in your garden. These are available at www.greenfingers.com for £20.99. 3. Butterfly feeder Butterflies add colour and beauty to any garden, which is why a butterfly feeding station is such a great gift for any nature-lover. Similar to a bird house, the butterfly house consists of a box, used for hibernation, but also has a tray at the front with small feeding holes, which can be filled with

5. Bird feeder A bird feeder is the perfect gift for anybody that loves nature this Christmas. Not only does it provide a great opportunity to witness birds at very close quarters, but it also helps birds survive the winter, while attracting a more varied selection right into your own back garden. Choose from bird nut feeders, bird seed feeders, suet ball feeders and multi-bird feeders. There is something to suit all interests and all budgets. These are available from www.gardenbird.co.uk.

Mobiles driving motorists to distraction 8

Mobile phones are now such a part of our lives that for most of us they’re the last thing we see at night and the first thing we look at in the morning. Our addictive relationship with the gadget has grown in proportion to the apps we rely on to direct our daily lives - not all of which are to our benefit. The dangers of using a mobile while driving are well documented and do attract a £60 fine, three penalty points and higher insurance premiums. Yet new research reveals that despite the practice being illegal since 2003, three quarters of British drivers see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, while a quarter spot drivers using their mobile on every trip. And it’s not just talking that’s the problem - some drivers are texting, emailing, Tweeting, updating their social networks or taking photographs on the move. The AA/Populus poll of nearly 21,000 drivers found 42 per cent say they used a hand-held phone in the car even though nearly two thirds admitted it distracted them from driving. Some 20 per cent confessed to texting behind the steering wheel, four per cent admit to checking emails and two per cent have sent emails or read Twitter or Facebook updates on the move. Another worrying and morbid development is the advent of “digital rubber neckers” - drivers who feel the need to use their phones to film or photograph serious crashes on the motorway, says the motoring organisation. In one incident on the M1 in Northamptonshire, police recorded 80 drivers using their phones or cameras to photograph emergency services carry out a four and a half hour rescue of a woman trapped in her crashed truck.

The charity says unlike other types of deadly risktaking, men and women - young and old - are almost equally guilty of using their phone behind the wheel, showing widespread misunderstanding of the dangers.

crash. The police have contacted most of the drivers to warn them about their illegal and irresponsible behaviour but have not brought any prosecutions. Edmund King, AA president, says: “Drivers need to concentrate on driving rather than be distracted by their digital technology. Our research shows that some drivers are now using their smart phones for more than talking on the move. It is really not smart to talk, text or tweet on the move.

9

Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive, says: “Use a phone while driving and you are taking a horrendous risk with your own life and the lives of others. Many drivers who wouldn’t dream of drink-driving are using phones while driving, oblivious that the effect on your reaction times can be similar. “We’re urging people to drive smart, recognising that phone use at the wheel can and does destroy lives, and no call or text is ever that important. If you need to use your phone urgently, pull over somewhere safe first: it’s as simple as that. We are also calling on the government to do more to tackle phone use at the wheel, including banning hands-free phones and bringing in far stiffer penalties.”

“Digital rubber neckers who photograph crashes really are morbid voyeurs who should be concentrating on the road not the victims of crashes. It beggars belief that these macabre motorists should put their lives and others at risk through their lust for twisted metal. “We would like to see the police target more mobile phone abusers so that the message gets out that it is not worth hanging on the telephone while driving. However, we have seen a 29% reduction in traffic police in the last decade so their resources are stretched.”

creative design | branding communications | marketing promotions | stationery web sites and more...

Road safety charity Brake’s campaign urging drivers to put their phones out of sight and out of mind while driving warns that using a phone behind the wheel can lengthen reaction times to a similar extent to drink driving, significantly increasing the risk of crashing.

The seriously injured driver was eventually flown by air ambulance to hospital and survived the

It’s a zoo at care home 16

The residents of a Rugby based care home were treated to a special visit from ZooLab, who brought along several creepy companions. Residents at newly opened Anya Court Care Home, on Dunchurch Road, spent the afternoon getting up close and personal with a variety of critters, including a tarantula, snake, millipede, lizard and guinea pig. While many of us would be a bit apprehensive about getting so close to these creatures, the residents at Anya Court really seemed to enjoy the experience, interacting as much as possible with the insects and animals. The millipede and lizard seemed to be big hits with everyone wanting their turn to hold them. Lifestyle Team Leader, Emma Wheatley said, “It was brilliant and such a different activity for our residents to be involved with. It was a great opportunity to see creatures you wouldn’t normally be familiar with.”

Anya Court care home is part of Hallmark Care Homes, the leading specialist care provider established in 1997 with 17 care homes across England and Wales. Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you'd prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group – between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help!

Call Alice or Ray for a chat on 01788 552 545 or email us RFF@ageukwarks.org.uk

On Thursday 13 November, Rugby’s Young Enterprise teams took part in a Dragons’ Lair event, held at La Casa Loco. A maximum of 4 people from each group had to present their ‘big idea’ to the Business Dragons, in a presentation lasting less than five minutes. They were then faced with questions from their Dragons which they had to answer in a way that would maximise their chances of winning additional funding! The Business Dragons they faced were: Malcolm Freeman, Owner of Oxygen Graphics; Shirley Gale, Owner of La Casa Loco; Jon Hemming, Senior Accountant from Astute Services; and Julie White, Managing Director of D-Drill. There were 5 Young Enterprise teams pitching their ideas, in the hope of winning additional funding: •

MORFF whose idea is to make and sell customised wrapping paper

STRIVE want to design and print signs to be placed above light switches reminding people to save switch off and save electricity

INDIGENOUS are hoping to sell pedal clips

RUGBY YOUTH INOVATION are looking to personalise and sell phone covers and

INNOVATION whose idea is to sell tea-towels that can be used as wrapping paper.

handbags

Following much deliberation, the Dragons selected their chosen winners. They felt that one company in particular stood out and whilst all the teams presented well on the day, with some great business ideas, the bulk of the prize fund went to one team –Innovation, who will benefit from £250 to invest in their business. The Dragons were also impressed by a product that showed imagination and future potential, so decided to provide some additional financial support to Strive as well, plus an hour of a Dragon’s time, free of charge, to assist in developing their product. Many thanks to all the students who took part, and to the Business Advisors for their support. Huge thanks to the Dragons for enabling this to happen, and to Alistair George from George & Co for organising and funding the event. Look out at the local Christmas Fairs for the Young Enterprise teams, who may well be there selling their wares! If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise, the teams, or being an Advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on 01788 579456.
