No doubt we are all making our resolutions again this month with renewed determination to stay on track this year. Congratulations to those of you who achieved your goals last year – aim higher this year? I fell by the wayside on numerous occasions in 2013 and didn’t achieve my final target. But, every day is a fresh start, so off I go again! So, what else do we have for you to think about this January? We celebrate the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh on 5th, Milad un Nabi (the birthday of the Prophet Mohammad) on 13th/18th, Makar Sankranti on 14th, Tu B’Shevat on 16th, the birthday of Guru Har Rai on 31st along with Chinese New Year on the same day. Some of you may have spotted a strange new symbol on our front cover this month. We are proud to announce that we are the first magazine in our area to become interactive! 2014 has now arrived and we would like to start this month’s article by wishing you all a very happy new year. We have lots to look forward to at Myton this year including the launch of a new Bereavement Service for relatives of our Rugby patients. The new Reflections Bereavement Support Group will start at our Rugby Hospice at the end of this month. It will run in the evenings from 5.45pm to 7pm and is aimed at relatives of Myton patients and those connected with the Macmillan service who have been bereaved for six months to a year. It will provide an opportunity to meet others going through similar challenges and will be led by trained facilitators from our Counselling and Family Support Services. Work to build new relatives’ accommodation in the grounds of our Warwick Hospice is now underway. Last year we were awarded a £442,000 grant from the Department Of Health to improve facilities for patient families at our Myton Lane hospice. The two new relatives’ suites will each have their own beds, bathrooms, living areas and balconies and will offer families who need to stay overnight vital space and privacy. The work is expected to be finished by April.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

HAPPY NEW YEAR? There are only three hundred and sixty five shopping days until Christmas! Such a lot can happen between then and now; welcome and unwelcome. Albert Ellis, the twentieth century’s spokesman for Stoic Philosophy, said that it isn’t the event that causes disturbance, but the meaning we attribute to it. This means that the way we see things determines how we feel about them, and influences how we respond. 2013 was the year in which it suddenly became ok to discuss one’s mental health, or the lack of it. Politicians and sportsmen lead the way, providing insight into their personal struggles and giving the rest of us an indication that mental wellbeing is not something to be taken for granted. Through 2014 we will continue to become aware of the emotional and cognitive struggles of the rich and famous, and as a result, might be more mindful of those a little closer to home that are finding life difficult for one reason or another. The stigma of mental illness is under continued threat as our understanding and awareness increases. Evolutionary psychologists would agree that the relatively slow maturation of the human brain is one of the key components in our flexibility and therefore our ability to adapt and survive. However, many of the strategies of thinking that shape our beliefs, about ourselves and the world around us, are formed at a very impressionable age. We tend to hang on to these patterns of thinking because they appeared helpful once. But just because we think something doesn’t make it so. It would be unwise to assume that since we have not been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder or other significant organic illness which affects cognitive and emotional functionality, that we are fine. In the same way that our bodies, and our ability to fight ailments and disease, vary from person to person, so it would appear that our brains are also subject to organic and functional variability. As our brains are the seat of our thoughts, beliefs and our emotional responses, it makes sense to recognise that our capacity to think, learn and reflect on experience is also variable. Diagnosable organic conditions aside, all of us are affected to varying degrees by unhealthy beliefs. Developing a more flexible and pragmatic approach can help to reduce the impact of unhelpful thinking should the unwelcome occur, enabling a more constructive and useful response.
