Your local community magazine supporting local business
JULY 2014 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,300 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.
Welcome to the July edition of Around Rugby! 2
Firstly, congratulations are in order. Rob O’Donnell exceeded his expectations with The Sunflower Ball held at Hinckley Island Hotel last month in memory of his sister Tammy Harrison and in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. The evening raised a staggering £15,000.00. Well done to everyone involved! (Check out Rob’s press release at www.aroundme.co.uk/rugby).
and encourage a kinder attitude towards the planet. The scheme is not exclusive to Council employees and is free for anyone to use. So, if you’re an individual interested in sharing the driving on a regular journey, willing to offer a lift or require one, or a business interested in joining the scheme, you can find more information at www.liftshare.com
Celebratory days in July include Prince George’s 1st birthday on 22nd, the birthday of Guru Hargobind on 5th, St Swithin’s Day on 15th, the birthday of Guru Har Krishen on 23rd, Lailat al Qadr on 24th and Edi-ul-Fitr (the end of Ramadan) on 28th. Of course, we also have the FIFA World Cup and Wimbledon reaching their finals. Congratulations to everyone who won a Nike Tiempo Football or England polo or football shirt, by the way. What a shame England couldn’t stay in the competition a little longer. We also have the Rugby Festival of Culture in full swing, the Race for Life taking place at Whitehall Rec on 13th and the ever popular ‘Hamplified’ event at St Andrew’s RFC, Ashlawn Road on Saturday 19th.
Competition time! Our July competition is sponsored by Frankie & Benny’s on Junction One Retail Park. The prize is 2 courses from the Specials menu for 2 people. The winner of our May competition was Glyn Vaughan who won a £30.00 gift card to use at Rugby Tap! Glyn answered correctly that the Rugby Tap sells d) Beers, Wines and Spirits. Finally, we have a comment from Simon Spice who won the Ovenu oven clean in our April edition. Simon says ‘What an excellent job, thank you Ovenu, I have my oven back!’
Other news for the town includes a multimillion pound rail investment which will improve facilities for Virgin travellers within Rugby Station and whilst travelling; plans to locate a Waitrose store on the old Social Club site in Bilton and Warwickshire County Council have launched ‘Liftshare’ a car sharing scheme designed to save employees money

Advice on feeding your pet Your pooch may enjoy going out to lunch with you, but this doesn’t mean they have to eat like you. It’s so important to feed the correct diet to your pet, and you need to know exactly what that is so you can make better choices for your pet’s food and nutrition. One myth to address is this: your pet DOES NOT NEED VARIETY. They don’t get bored of their food as we would if we ate the same thing every day. They don’t give a monkeys whether they are devouring a panini with brie and roasted vegetables or baked beans on toast. All they want is their dinner, in the right amounts, at regular times, so they don’t feel hungry. Changing their diet or adding extras in can cause tummy problems, skin issues, vomiting and diarrhoea and weight disasters – or create fussy eaters. I recommend you make your choice and stick to it. If you do need to change their food, the best way to avoid all this (and the subsequent cleaning) is by following these guidelines: 1. Mix a small amount of the new diet in with their current diet, keeping to this ratio for a couple of days. 2. Then increase the amount of the new diet while decreasing the current diet. 3. Continue in this manner until the new diet has completely replaced their old one. Ideally this should be done over a period of approximately a week. 4. If they’re not enjoying their new dinner, try adding small amounts of one, of these tempting dips… for a FEW DAYS ONLY. Gravy A small amount of butter Sardines or pilchards in tomato sauce (cats absolutely adore this) Pieces of chicken, ham, or beef Wet (tinned/pouched) pet food (dogs absolutely adore this) The healthiest way is to add water to dry food or just warm the food. If you love your pet and want to be a cool and responsible owner, check out my book Desperate Housepets, available from my website. It’s a practical guide to keeping a healthy pet, with advice on subjects ranging from health, nutrition, exercise, grooming, illness and first aid. Become the owner your pet wants you to be! need to claim a trademark for the business in the future. • Finance. It’s a lot easier to secure funding, loans or finance if you’re limited company. Your accounting is more public (unlike a sole trader). • Tax advantages. As long as your business is earning above a certain level you’re very likely to save tax. There are lots of tax advantages to having a Limited company.
So what should you be?
Limited company – Cons • A more complicated set up. Unlike a sole trader, the set up of a limited company is complicated, unless you are like us and know exactly what you are doing! It is also more time-consuming throughout the year, with more filing requirements. • More admin. In turn, the admin is more onerous and time-consuming. Running a limited company does give you (or your accountant) more paperwork to fill out and that means throughout the year too. • Public accounting. With a limited company you are required to publish your accounts so that shareholders and other companies can see how much of a risk you might be. • Accountancy costs are more expensive but the money you save in tax more than covers the cost.
Here are a few pros and cons for both:
Should you be a limited company, sole trader or partnership? As a professional accountant I’m often asked which option people in new businesses should choose. Which is best for them and ultimately their business’ future? There’s no wrong or right answer and what works for one business may well be the wrong decision for another. Part of my job is to guide people to the right decision for them and their business and that includes future plans, tax, personal details and more.
Sole trader/partnership – Pros • It’s simple to set up. As a sole trader you can be ready to trade very quickly and can get on with your work. You will just need to register with HMRC and open a business bank account and away you go! • Low admin and admin costs. Apart from a set of accounts and an annual self-assessment, you have very little to do in the way of admin, which will make your accountancy easier and cheaper if you’re hiring an accountant. • Confidentiality. As a sole trader you don’t need to publically announce your accounts like limited companies do. This means that no one knows your financial affairs other than those who you give access to.
Those are just a few of the main pros and cons but as with anything in business a lot depends on your business type and you.
Sole trader/partnership – Cons • Liability. As a sole trader you are personally liable. This means if anything were to go wrong your personal assets and good name could be at risk. • Brand protection. You won’t need to register with Companies House but that does mean you can’t protect your brand name and it could make it difficult with future trademarking too. If in 3 years’ time you decide to go limited you could find your name is no longer available on Companies House. • Finance. Getting business finance could prove more difficult. Creditors prefer your company to be limited when considering giving you credit - it’s all down to calculated risks.
Future proof? One thing to consider is what you’re planning to do with your business in the future. Often it may be simpler to start as a sole trader in the beginning. But if you plan to grow, maybe you should consider becoming Limited from the outset to save the hassle of changing later on. This can avoid confusion to external bodies and customers. Money Also one of the main issues is money (isn’t it always?). Consider the risks involved should the business not work out. A limited company allows you more spending money due to the tax savings. Kudos A limited company does carry a lot more kudos with potential customers. Having LTD after your name looks a little more serious about the business to others. How do you want your business to be seen by other people and businesses? People and banks are more likely to work with you when you’re Limited as you’re more ‘trustworthy’. Branding protection This goes back to your future plans. Should your business be a real success you’ll want to protect it. Brand awareness is often more powerful than bricks, mortar and products put together. If Coca Cola woke up one day and they lost all their products, they would be in a far greater position than if their customers woke up and forgot who they were.
So what about becoming a Limited company?
Protecting your business name should be something you consider if you plan to be a success. With a limited company registered with Companies House you can be safe in the knowledge that no one will be able to trade as you, and you have a good argument for claiming the trademark too.
I hope this helps you if you’re making the decision whether to go Limited or not. Of course, if you need any more help please call Jodie on 01926 800299 for more advice or visit http://www.coxcostello.co.uk/about-us/midlands-office
Limited company – Pros • Liability. As a limited company you have Limited Liability. This means that should your business go under then your personal finances and assets won’t be affected. Your business is a separate entity from you and your money. • Brand protection. As you will register your business with Companies House you will acquire your business name and ensure no one else can trade under it. This is essential if you

The Quays is Greater Manchester’s waterfront and home to two of its biggest cultural attractions: Imperial War Museum North (recently re-branded IWM North) and The Lowry, both of which recently clocked up ten highly successful years. For many years, it felt as if The Quays began and ended with these two institutions; the monumental architecture of each giving a boost to the long, slow regeneration of what were once among the busiest industrial docks in the UK. But then came The Beeb. The arrival of the BBC at Media City UK was the big bang that kick-started a flurry of development that continues to this day. It’s a place in the process of reinventing itself, its story still being written, but all the more interesting for it. Get to the root cause of health concerns with Five Element Acupuncture Have you ever thought how wonderful it would be to get to the root cause of a niggling ache or pain, or to feel energised throughout the day, sleep like a baby and be in control of your emotional and physical wellbeing? Sounds to good to be true but it is possible to achieve some if not all of these health benefits using Five Element Acupuncture. Five Element Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine that originated in China over 2000 years ago. The goal of it is to understand the root cause of disharmony in your body and to strengthen it so that you can achieve optimum health naturally. In Chinese philosophy, we are made up of a unique pattern of energy, the Five Elements. These are Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. When the elements are in balance we experience good health and are able to live a full happy life. Over time one or more of the elements can become weak for reasons such as stress, illness, shock, poor nutrition, medication or emotional states such as anger, fear, worry, grief or sadness. This weakness can be the root cause of many health concerns so understanding which of the Five Elements is out of balance is at the heart of planning treatment specific to your individual needs. Once the weakest links are identified, we can start a process of strengthening your energy, which essentially nudges your body to heal naturally. Energy starts to flow freely in your body, rebalancing the body, mind and emotions as it does so. The beauty of this is not only does it treat specific conditions; it also prevents recurring symptoms thus acting as a preventative medicine. How does acupuncture work? Treatment involves the use of very fine (size of a hair) sterile disposable needles to correct and rebalance the flow of energy. If the thought of needles is off putting I assure you all my clients find the whole treatment experience deeply relaxing and energising. For those who are needle phobic, there are other techniques that can be used to help you.
