Welcome to the January edition of Around Rugby! 2
Happy New Year! 2015 has arrived and we’re raring to go. Our resolutions are all in place and visible daily. Do you have your resolutions written down with little gems of support set up for the journey? I’ve decided that setting goals and having rewards in place really works for me. If you’ve indulged a little too much over the festive period, don’t worry - it’s ok. We’re all allowed to let go occasionally. If you didn’t quite achieve what you wanted last year, or you’re still saving for that special purchase – familiarise yourself with the end product again, start afresh, reassess your journey or re-establish your aim and try a different tack! Look for ways of keeping yourself motivated and make them visible. Set yourself realistic short term goals and celebrate your achievements regularly. Lots of people choose the New Year to start afresh or de-clutter their lives and living spaces. With this in mind, remember that you can sell your unwanted gifts and household items locally, and at no cost, via our website HYPERLINK "http://www. aroundme.co.uk/rugby" www.aroundme.co.uk/ rugby. Look for the ad in this month’s magazine for instructions on how to get your items listed. Also in the magazine this month, we are running our information page to refresh your memory regarding our Layar logo. We’ve had a lot of interest in it over the last couple of months and, noticing the local pizza delivery boxes are also becoming interactive, feel it’s time to bring it to your attention again. Layar enables our readers to interact with our advertisers directly through a mobile app. Have a look at our information page again and have a go at downloading the app and scanning pages where the symbol is visible. Our advertisers choose phone numbers, websites, Get in touch with Around Rugby’s Managing Director, Amanda Avery... t: 01788 440015 e: amanda@aroundmagazines.co.uk www.aroundmagazines.co.uk
email addresses, social media links and YouTube videos to connect and interact with our readers. Have a go - its fun! In terms of celebration this month, we have Milad un-Nabi (the birthday of the prophet Mohammed on 3rd/8th, the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh on 5th, Makar Sankranti on 14th, Robert Burns Night on 25th and the birthday of Guru Har Rai and Chinese New Year (the year of the Sheep) on 31st. I think it is also appropriate to offer congratulations to Rugby Borough Council as winners of the Central Region Partner of the Year at the Fields in Trust Awards late last year. They were recognised and honoured for their work and commitment in protecting a dozen of our parks along with work on green spaces within the borough. Around Rugby Competition time! Our competition sponsor this month is Virgin Active at the Junction One Retail Park, Leicester Road. Virgin Active is offering a seven day free membership to their Rugby centre. This is a great taster prize for anyone considering joining or to kick start a New Year fitness regime. The draw takes place on 31st January. The winner of our November competition was Belinda Maidment who won a Nordmann Fir Tree from Cawston Christmas Trees, Coventry Road, Cawston. Belinda correctly answered that the number of real Christmas trees on display on 1st December would be c) 860. Finally, Happy New Year to readers and advertisers, once again. We hope you have an exceptional 2015!

Vroom vroom into 2015 Rugby Kart Club was formed in 2007, to give ordinary people the chance to get into competitive Motor sport without the need for a competition licence, or the expense of owning expensive equipment. The Club meet about once a month to race. We always race on outdoor circuits and some of the Karts we drive can reach speeds up to 75 mph. The cost of a race is between £50 - £60 and for this you get a 10 minute qualifying and practice session and two 20 minute Sprint races. All equipment is provided, karts, fuel, overalls, helmet and gloves. Membership to the Club is free to everyone aged over 16 years. If anyone wishes to come along for a chat, or a taster session, we can arrange this. Walking improves general health and well-being The importance of regular exercise and a good diet is well-known and both are documented as aides to a long and healthy life. While most of us can manage the diet side of things perfectly well and fit our nutritional needs around our lifestyle, when it comes to doing the same with exercise many of us are sadly lacking.
4
Contrary to popular belief, exercise does not have to be regimented or expensive, requiring us to sign up for numerous classes or hours at the gym; one of the simplest, best and cheapest forms of regular exercise is walking, something most of us do every day without even thinking about it. Walking can easily be fitted into a daily routine by most, whether you’re a stay-at-home Mum, a busy professional or a retiree. It can be done with others, alone, or even with your dog, and doesn’t require a personal trainer. It improves lung and heart function and strengthens the muscles in the lower body, and because walking is a load-bearing activity it can help with poor bone density, making it particularly beneficial for older people. In short, we can all benefit from walking.
After a few weeks of easing yourself into the habit, try to walk more briskly and add some uphill stretches into your route for extra benefit. This will help burn off calories and increase cardiovascular fitness, and once a good level has been reached, try power walking at as fast a pace as you can manage during the middle section of your walk. Enjoy striding out, getting fresh air in your lungs and appreciating your surroundings as you go along. You will soon find that you start to look forward to your daily walk, and you will certainly notice the difference in your general health. At this point you may consider joining a rambling club to enjoy your new found exercise with others. Ramblers meet for regular walks in stunning surroundings, and tackle walks for all levels of fitness. You may even find you make some new friends to share your new exercise regime with. Details of these clubs can be found on the internet or at local libraries.
There are many opportunities in the day to take a walk and it doesn’t have to be chore. Starting a walking programme is as easy as walking to the local shops and walking the children to school rather than driving or taking a bus. Begin by taking a walk in your lunch break and see the increase in your mental performance at work during the afternoon, or walk in the evening and experience a much better quality of sleep. Walking in open countryside or the local park adds another pleasant dimension to your exercise. But while you take in the beauty of the local flora and fauna along your chosen route, focusing on the quality and distance of your walking can dramatically benefit your wellbeing and increase fitness.

Some of our residents love the freshly-baked cakes at tea time. Others like
the baking.
At Anya Court, our relationship-centred care enables residents to keep on doing the things they’ve always loved - the things they perhaps thought they could no longer enjoy. So as part of our community, they’ll be able to cook, help out in the garden and carry on with the kind of everyday routines which make their lives… theirs. Well why not? Industry-leading residential, nursing and dementia care are just the beginning. Dealing with road rage 8
Road rage is on the increase. When there were fewer cars on the roads, it was unheard of. A journey could be enjoyed the without fear of angry motorists spoiling it with their uncontrollable tempers. In recent years, outbursts of conflict between drivers have been widely publicised. It is natural to feel concerned about encountering aggression when driving. But we must all keep the risk in perspective, says Green Flag, the motoring assistance organisation. Incidents of unprovoked rage on the road are still quite rare. The chances are that you will never experience anything really traumatic. Tips on steering clear of road rage • Keep your own stress level low by allowing plenty of time and ensuring you know where you are going. • Always try to look confident and in control, not nervous and vulnerable, even if that’s how you feel. • Be polite and courteous, even when other drivers behave unreasonably. • Stay calm. Don’t allow yourself to be provoked or answer back. Avoid confrontation. • If you make an error of judgement, wave an apology to placate the other driver. • Drive with your doors locked at night in busy urban areas and keep them locked when stationary. • Keep the sunroof and windows closed if you’re forced to move slowly in areas where you feel uncomfortable. • Never give lifts to strangers. Dealing with road rage • Be ready for rudeness or aggression from other drivers. • If you feel threatened, remember that your primary aim is to defuse the situation and get away. • If another car pulls up alongside or someone harasses you, avoid eye contact. • If you have to stop, stay in the car with the
9
doors locked and engine running, ready to drive off or reverse away. • If you are followed, drive to the nearest police station or a busy place such as a garage forecourt. • Use the horn and hazard warning lights to attract attention. • If you have a mobile phone, call the police for help. • If you don’t have a mobile, keep a plastic toy phone handy. It could be enough to deter an aggressor. • Memorise the registration number of the other car, its make and colour and anything you can about the driver’s description. Helping others • If you see someone else being harassed, don’t be tempted to assist on your own. • Call the police, either on your mobile or from a public phone when it is safe to stop. • Music can help cool the situation • Music can calm the mind. Create a soothing atmosphere in the car with a non-aggressive choice of music. • Doctors recommend listening to something with a slower rhythmic rate than your heart beat, such as classical music. • deally, avoid dance music or anything with a really heavy bass beat. It could hype you up. • Keep the volume at a reasonable level. Booming noise can distract you and may annoy other drivers.

Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you'd prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group – between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help!
Call Alice or Ray for a chat on 01788 552 545 or email us RFF@ageukwarks.org.uk

Like many others at the start of the New Year, our five Young Enterprise companies are assessing their bank balances and planning for the next few months. Christmas was a busy time for them. They were working very hard to meet the orders they had received, ensuring that customers were not disappointed or kept waiting. Building on the experience gained from Christmas trading they must now decide which market to target next. Will it be Valentine’s Day, Mothering Sunday or even Easter? Perhaps they are considering launching a product that has a more general use or even offering a service. We wait with great expectations to see what they decide. This year sees Rugby Young Enterprise reach its 35th anniversary. Since the programme was introduced in 1979, approximately 2600 local students between the ages of 15 and 17 have taken part in the scheme. All secondary schools in the town have been involved including both Rugby School and the now closed Bishop Wulstan School. The competition element of the scheme has seen many groups represent the town at the County finals, with one group ‘Stirling’, actually reaching the national finals in London. The experience many of these past achievers have gained from taking part in the scheme has served them well in later life, with a number starting up on their own. We would be keen to hear from any of those who have become local entrepreneurs. In April we will be holding our annual presentation evening when a variety of prizes will be awarded, with this year’s winning company going through to the County final in Coventry in early May. As this is a special anniversary we would like to extend a warm invitation to anyone who has been part of the scheme during the last 35 years. That may be as an achiever, an advisor or as a board member. Young Enterprise is an educational charity and therefore relies heavily upon financial support from business to meet its costs. Here in Rugby our funds are running low and we are looking for new partners to support the scheme. Sponsorship of our awards evening is our biggest outlay but we are also looking for groups to sponsor individual awards. These run at a cost of as little as £20.00. If you are interested in becoming part of Rugby Young Enterprise or just sponsoring an award, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on 01788 579456. Geoff Buck, Chair Rugby Young Enterprise.

A year ago, we announced that we were the first magazine in the area to bring our pages to life. During this year, several other high profile businesses have become aware of augmented reality and are making their products/packaging interactive. The most recent, and relevant in Rugby, is Pizza Hut! Have you noticed their Mutant Turtle boxes? As we progress through the digital age, consumers are expecting more and more information at their fingertips. We download numerous apps onto our smart phones and tablets in order to carry our worlds around with us and have them accessible at the touch of a button. Here at Around Magazines we are no different. We believe that augmented reality is the next step in the future of printed advertising. Interactive print will bring more life to our pages; allow our advertisers to highlight aspects of their business to their potential customers more effectively, and our readers to become more directly connected to those offering the services and products they choose. All in all, advertisers and consumers will have a more exciting and interesting experience through interactive connections. So, here’s another reminder of how Layar works. Just download the free app on your smart phone and begin to explore! Once you’ve downloaded and opened the app, point your phone at the page, tap the screen to scan it and see what happens! We’ll have more interactive pages in future editions of Around Rugby magazine. Just look out for the Layar logo on our pages and interact! Visit www.layar.com to download the app, practice your scanning techniques and read up on the future of printed media.
