Royston Town FC Club History So when did it all begin? After some intensive research the evidence is that the club came into existence in 1875 making Royston the third oldest Club in Hertfordshire after Hitchin and Bishop Stortford. The Club’s very first honour came in 1911/12 when they won the Creake Charity Shield beating Wisbech 1-0 in extra time. The Club’s first major honour in more recent times came in the guise of promotion to the Herts County Premier League in 1969/70 and they went on to be champions in 1972/73 and 1976/77. In 1978 we rejoined the South Midlands League and won the Division One title at the first time of asking. Success continued with a final appearance in the Herts Charity Shield for the first time in 1979 and runners up spot in the South Midlands League Premier Division in 1980. The Herts Charity Shield was won in 1981/82 and two years later the Club joined the Isthmian League Division Two North where we remained for 10 seasons before returning to the South Midlands League in 1994. After a period in the doldrums which culminated in relegation from the South Midlands League Premier Division at the end of 2006/07, Paul Attfield was appointed manager with ex Spurs favourite Tony Galvin returning to Garden Walk as 1 st Team Coach in November 2007. Paul immediately set about building a new 1st Team squad and a run of 17 games undefeated saw the Club move from bottom of the table to finish in 5th place in the League. The foundations had been laid for the 2008/09 season and the first team took the South Midlands Division One League title with one of the best set of stats for any Step 6 Club in the country W33, D4, L3, GF138, GA30, GD+108, PTS 103. The 2011/2012 season will be seen as a watershed in our history with the winning of the South Midlands Premier Division title and promotion to Step 4 in the shape of the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central. In our first season back at Step 4 after an absence of 19 years it was hard to know what to expect and how we would perform. Most of our supporters felt a mid-table position would be an acceptable target for the season, but we quickly found ourselves exceeding all expectations as our performances propelled us towards the top of the table. Four straight wins in the first four games set the tone and a run of nine wins with just one defeat between October and December saw us maintain a play-off position. In the very last game of the season a play-off was still a possibility and having gone 2-1 up away at AFC Hayes with just a few minutes of the game left it looked a near certainty. But it was not to be as Hayes scored an 87 minute equaliser and our play-off place was lost. In our second season at this level our steady progress to claim a place in the play off zone was given a severe jolt when, at the beginning of November, Paul Attfield announced his resignation as first team manager due to ill health. The search for his replacement began almost immediately and we were inundated with applications from some very well know and successful managers. After an exhaustive selection process the Board appointed Steve Castle at the end of November and on Boxing Day Steve officially took over securing a 0 – 0 draw against the League’s form team and eventual champions Dunstable Town. Our 2014/15 season opener was at home against one of the promotion favourites Rugby Town but an impressive team display ensured their threat was stifled and we ran out winners 2 -1. That victory really did set things buzzing but we were quickly brought back down to earth when on the following Tuesday night Bedworth United were the visitors winning the game 3 – 1. As we all know consistency in performances provides the key to long term success and although the early stages of the season produced good results against the likes of Daventry Town and Beaconsfield these were punctuated by dismal performances against the likes of Aylesbury and Egham Town. From mid November to mid December We really lost our way with six defeats in seven games but our rollercoaster ride saw an incredible run of form over the Christmas period and into the New Year with five straight wins which helped us maintain a position in the play off places. On a miserable Tuesday evening in February we travelled to lowly AFC Hayes and after an abject performance we lost the game 2 – 0. This prompted our Chairman to tell Steve Castle that he had given up on this team making the play – offs and said that we should start preparing instead for next season. That message was conveyed to players and we witnessed a most remarkable transformation in our results with a 14 game unbeaten run during which we scored 29 goals and conceded just seven resulting in us achieving the runners up spot to league champions Kettering Town and securing our place in the play- off semi final where we met local rivals Barton Rovers. After an incident packed 90 minutes and extra time the game ended in a goalless draw but

it was not to be our night and we lost the shoot out 4-5 and had to suffer the agony of all the emotions which go with being defeated in this way. We started the 2015/16 season strongly and between the end of December and the end of March we produced a rich vein of form with only one defeat in 14 games and this ensured we were sitting on top of the league with just 7 games to go and with the expectation that we could win promotion outright ran high throughout the whole club. However three games in succession proved our down fall when we could only draw 0 – 0 with Bedford and lost to Egham away 3- 1 and Godalming at home 1- 0 and once again we ended up in the play offs against AFC Rushden but we failed to turn up and went out tamely to our opponents 2 - 1. Having finished runners up for two years in succession Steve Castle was determined to make it third time lucky and began to recruit some experienced new blood in the shape of John Frendo and Adam Murray whilst at the same time giving youngsters Gus Scott Morris and Josh C extended runs in the first team. However the season didn’t start well and after four games we’d only mustered five points whilst promotion rivals Farnborough just couldn’t stop winning. Although results did improve, defeat in the FA Cup to Heybridge Swifts 4 – 1 and a thrashing by Barton Rovers at home 6 – 3 at the end of September didn’t do a great of good for our confidence. Things took a dramatic turn thereafter with 12 successive league wins which ended with defeat 2-1 at Kidlington in early January 2017, interspersed by a magnificent run in the FA Trophy including victory against Step 2 outfit Hampton and Richmond Borough before in the replay against Dulwich Hamlet we eventually went down 1 -0. With cup football out of the way the team put together an incredible run of 16 league games undefeated including a 5 – 0 thrashing of closest rivals Farnborough which saw us maintain the top spot until the end of the season by a margin of 12 points and the highest number of goals scored, 120, across all three Evostik Leagues. Promotion to the Southern Premier League means that the Club will be playing at its highest level in its 142 year history! Season 2017/18 saw The Crows exceeded all expectations in our first season at Step 3. Throughout the season we managed to maintain our hopes of a play-off place until they were finally put to bed with two successive defeats against the eventually play-off winners Slough Town and we had to be satisfied with a seventh place finish. The signing of Adam Marriott, a proven goal scorer who had played for Lincoln City, Stevenage and Cambridge United was without a doubt a real coup and he was to play a key role in the progress made by the Club by becoming our leading marksman with 31 goals. A good run in the FA Trophy with wins against Enfield Town and Leatherhead came to an end against Eastbourne Borough when having managed to draw at their place we lost the replay on penalties. We managed to get to the final of the Herts Senior Cup were we played Boreham Wood from Step 2 and in spite of a brave performance we never really had the power to compete and lost 2 – 1. Given where we had started from we definitely exceeded our own and many other peoples’ expectations and this has provided us with the building blocks to face this season in the newly constituted Southern Premier Central League. Season 2018/19 saw us finishing in a respectable 9th position in what proved to be a very strong Premier Division Central. During February/March we recorded six wins out of seven league games to give us a faint hope of a play-off spot, but three straight defeats in April put paid to our chances. We suffered another early at AFC Sudbury in the FA Cup and in the FA Trophy we progressed through two rounds before being beaten in a replay at Needham Market. A comprehensive history of the Club can be found in The History of Royston Town FC 1875 - 2012 first published in 2013. The book was written by the Club’s President, Alan Barlow after over five years of painstaking research and can be purchase via the Club on by visiting www.avbarlow.com.

Tonight’s Opponents – Biggleswade Town Club History
1874 - 1954 - the First 80 Years Biggleswade Town were originally formed as Biggleswade F.C. in 1874 and began by playing friendlies. They became one of the founder members of the Biggleswade and District League in 1902/03 and won the championship at the first attempt. The successful season was climaxed by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup - the first of eight victories so far in the competition. The ‘Waders’, as the club are known, first entered the FA Cup in 1904. 2008 - Chris Nunn became manager in Nov 06 after a very poor start to the season saw the team heading for certain relegation. In Feb 07 the team had made up a lot of points but were still bottom of the Premier table. The team avoided relegation on the last league day of the season. The winning of the NBC Cup in the very last match of the campaign reinforced that optimism. The 2007/08 season saw the squad develop further with new signings and for the first time in 15 years the club found itself top of the division at one point. A final position of 3rd was a result of hard work and changes gradually moving the club forward. As the 2008/09 season beckoned, the new Stadium was ready for occupation and the seasons in the 'wilderness of ground sharing' were over. For the first time in the clubs 134-year history, it finally had a home of its very own. 2008 – 2009 - Moving into the new ground certainly created a great feeling at the Club and new faces began to appear on the playing side as well as behind the scenes. As the final whistle blew on the last friendly there was a definite feeling of readiness for the forthcoming season. The Wader’s first season (2009-10) at Step Four proved a tough start but gradually the team strengthened and finished in a comfortable twelfth place with the team taking points off every side that season except Bury Town and Hitchin Town who finished first and second respectively. 2010-2011 - This season saw the Waders climb to their highest ever position in the football pyramid, finally finishing in 4th place and with the resultant position in the playoffs. Waders travelled to 3rd place Daventry Town, a team they had previously beaten both home and away in the regular season. Football being football, Daventry ran out easy winners ending Waders hopes of promotion. 2011-2012 - This season saw the Waders fade as season progressed. Having topped the league early in the season, injuries and suspensions took its toll and the season finished with a top half finish just outside the play offs. 2012-2013 - Winning the 2012/13 Playoff final secured a place in the Southern League Premier, was upstaged by the best ever season in the club’s 140-year history, finishing 9th in our first Premier season, reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup losing to a well organised Stourbridge side. Season ended with Waders beating Luton Town at Luton to lift the County Cup. 2013-2014 - First season ever at step three and the Waders feel they have arrived. Finishing a creditable 9th in the table and reaching the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in the club’s history put the club in the record books. The Waders were the draw specialist of the premier division and had they converted the drawn games to winning ones, they would have finished in the play-off positions. Winning the Beds Senior Cup for the second successive season was the icing on the cake. 2014-2015 - This season was a real test for the Waders, with injuries both on and off the field. Long term injuries meant bringing in loan players and they all played their part.
2015-2016 - A difficult season for the Waders, Southern League gets harder every season, an injection of new players helped steer the ship. 2016-2017 - Having established their premier status the Waders went on to achieve their highest points total and finished just outside the play-offs in a creditable 7th position 2017-2018 - Tough season with the club suffering a number of significant injuries ended with a Mid Table finish and a narrow loss to Luton Town in the Beds Senior Cup Final. 2018-2019 - A successful first season for new manager Lee Allanson and his new squad. Winners of the Beds senior cup. 7th in the Southern league central premier division, narrowly missing a play-off place. Reached the 2nd round qualifying of the FA trophy only just beaten 1-0 away to conference side AFC Fylde. 2020-2021 - Following a disruptive 2019-20 season involving the loss of Lee Allanson and most of the squad to Hendon, Waders appointed former manager Chris Nunn in caretaker role to see the season out. The COVID-19 pandemic brought the season to an early close with the club safe from any relegation worries despite having to put together a new team in mid-season. Nunny was re-appointed full time manager for the 2020-2021 season, bringing in Scott Davies and Russell Short as Assistants.

The former Peterborough United scholar has also played for St Albans and Wingate and Finchley before coming back to Biggleswade where we hope we can give him that platform to perform. Sam Squire is a 20-year-old midfielder who joins us this season.
Sam Squire
He joined Cambridge United aged 8 and departed the club at 19. At 17 he got his first taste of mens football on loan at Cambridge City where he helped them reach the play-off final. After signing a professional contact at Cambridge United he enjoyed another loan spell at Needham Market for the majority of the 2018/19 season and then signed with them permanently last season. He has now played over 100 games at steps 3/4 and is looking to have a successful season with the Waders!

The 20-year-old, having come through the ranks at MK Dons Academy has now played over 80 games at non-league level, playing at Royston Town, Cambridge City and Hitchin Town. He’s an intricate two footed versatile player, who can play in many positions. CROWS BLOG: STILL WAITING! 04/10//2020 Hello all, The lads did better yesterday but not for the duration of 90 minutes. We played very well for 45 mins but seemed to struggle in the second half! Being 2 goals up, maybe we thought the game had been won but fair play to our opponents, they went for it and got their just rewards by eventually getting themselves level resulting in the lottery that is penalties. On this occasion, we went through but we can’t let teams back in after having a sure lead. The start we’ve made this season is proving very frustrating for all of us. It seems that we take one stride forward but then quickly shoot ourselves in the foot and give opponents the opportunity to punish us. As I said in my last blog post, it’s a case of us ‘digging in’, keep believing and working hard. To keep going and in these very trying times for all of us, we need to make sure that our performance levels are up to the standard that we all know these players can reach. I’m certainly not trying to make excuses for the boys but because everything isn’t ‘normal’ I do wonder sometimes if the upheaval of all that is going on has been an unsettling atmosphere around the place. Yes, we can argue that all the other teams have had to cope and that is true but we don’t seem quite right. On a different note, I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce and welcome our new signing Duncan Culley to the club. He’s a lad that has previously played with Spyros, Scott and Ed at Hayes & Yeading. Duncan is a strong lad who will bring a big physical presence to our attack and hopefully plenty of goals to add as well! Good luck mate!
Duncan Culley in action at Hayes & Yeading FC Keep the faith everyone, please! A good squad of players don’t become bad overnight. We all know what they are capable of, just retaining the belief is the important thing for me.
Cheers, Steve C
TRAVELLERS TALES 5 By Brian Buck 17th game of the season (Match 13,276) Wednesday 26th August 2020. Shefford Town & Campton Development 4 Real Haynes Reserves 1 (Friendly Match) att 50 approx. This was my second game of the season here, coincidentally also with the hosts being Shefford Development and things had changed a bit since in the intervening three weeks. Then you were allowed to congregate only in the patio area in front of the clubhouse. Tonight, the rules had been relaxed and people were allowed freedom of movement around the whole ground, although I suspect that there was some kind of track & trace system on the go if you went anywhere near the bar, which we didn’t. So, this meant that I could sit in the clubs new 75 seater stand. It seems some locals have already taken kindly to it and their large club flag adorned half of the back of the stand. Anyway, the general impression I had on the night was that it was generally business as usual here. I think that the reason for largish crowd was for a variety of reasons. Both sides had a lot of mates of the players watching. There had been kiddies training on the top pitches and I suspect that some of the parents were reluctant to go home and finally the locals seem to have taken to the place and the bar in the clubhouse (or pub) as they like to call it, is well used. This match saw the hosts play a lot better than when I last saw them last, although they had a few experienced players on show tonight to help the youngsters get through the game more easily. By coincidence the visitors weren’t quite so great as they were when I saw them play in the second half ten days earlier. So it was that Shefford took an 8th minute lead through Andrew Hayday once a first team regular in his hey day. The lead was doubled from the spot just before half time following a trip. Then on 62 minutes we saw the best goal of the game, which came from a hard shot from just outside the area and which went in off the post. Then after Haynes pulled a goal back on 67 minutes, in added on time Mr Hayday claimed a second goal which was a well hit effort, again from the edge of the area. The game was well reffed by someone so young but exercising some maturity to belie his tender years! 18. (13,277) Thursday 27th August 2020. Blunham 1 Sharnbrook Reserves 6 (Played at Moggerhanger Recreation Ground) (Friendly Match) att 15 approx. As I drove down to pick up the Beds County League Vice Chairman, Peter Francis, it was absolutely bucketing it down and been so for at least an hour. There were puddles everywhere and roads were partially flooded. We both wondered why we were bothering with the game. We knew that it would still be on because the pitch here drains well, but did we really want to stand out in torrential rain? Well initially we didn’t. On our arrival players were still arriving, so we sat in the car until the last possible moment. It turned out that the ref, sitting in the car opposite, was doing the same thing and he only ventured out when he was told that they were ready to start. He has a curious daytime job in that he is the announcer at the Henlow Greyhound Track! Anyway, we soon got underway and as we did so there were signs that the rain was moving away and indeed, after about fifteen minutes it largely did, although at times there was some light drizzle for the remainder of the evening. However, before the bulk of the rain had departed the Sharnbrook number 5 had bagged a hattrick, completed by the 11th minute. Then on 19 minutes Blunham pulled a goal back. It was one the Sharnbrook keeper will want to forget as he seemed to have a long punt upfield safely under control, but in trying to catch it cleanly, the ball slipped out of his hands, leaving it to be tapped home by a waiting, just in case, Blunham attacker. After a fourth Sharnbrook goal on 32 minutes they scored a spectacular fifth when the keeper was intentionally lobbed from the edge of the centre circle. After the break Sharnbrook mixed things up a bit and perhaps Blunham played a bit better. But we only had one more goal, scored from the spot on 70 minutes. But we did get a large double rainbow! We also saw a Blunham player sin binned on 75 minutes. Finally, right at the end there was a red card tackle, but the ref wisely dealt with it by bringing the game to a close!
19. (13,278) Friday 28th August 2020. Langford Reserves 4 Letchworth Garden City Eagles Reserves 2 (Friendly Match) att 30 approx. Conditions tonight were far worse than the previous night as the rain, sometimes almost torrential, never let up for the whole match. This game only appeared on Twitter at around lunchtime and the good thing about it was that you could watch it from under cover in the stand, if you wanted to. Not everyone did and there were several spectators who chose to stand out in the rain to watch it, including one young lady, who when she finally sat down in the stand, told her boyfriend, “I’ve got a wet bum.” Whether that was a key word to go off and do something together later on, I don’t know, but after that they soon departed! It transpires that Langford Reserves are last season’s Weston of the Herts Senior County League, who left their village ground to go and play in the Gosling stadium in Welwyn Garden City when they found that their ground didn’t meet Step 7 regulations. So, they came to Forde Park because it was nearer. It also appears that their committee have taken over the general running of Langford football club. Tonights game wasn’t as good as the scoreline suggests. Langford were three nil up by the 19th minute, with their second goal coming from a cross from the left which should have easily been cut out, but which somehow almost comically avoided all of their defenders. Then we had the ‘wally with the brolly’ saga in the second half. A gentleman fitting this description appeared and managed to wipe out our view of almost half the pitch. Fortunately, he eventually moved out of the way in time for us to see Langford’s fourth goal, scored on 70 minutes. But the Eagles were never that bad and for the last quarter of the game they were the better side and as such they deserved the goals they scored on 74 and 86 minutes, the first from the spot after a player was bundled over and the second when the keeper pushed a ball into his own net. 20. (13,279) Saturday 29th August 2020. Cranfield United 1 Newport Pagnell Town 6 (Friendly Match) att 70 approx. The intensity of the previous nights rain had subsided somewhat by the time we arrived here, where there was no problem with social distancing. To start with, although the bar was in use it wasn’t over-subscribed. Furthermore, when the game kicked off there were very few people visibly watching. Part of this was due to the fact that the stand was being used as a changing room for both sides, so therefore it was out of public use. But part of this was because there was light rain falling. This lasted for about half an hour and then like many others who had been watching the game from their cars, I braved the elements and watched the match on what was a very autumnal afternoon, which then remained cloudy, breezy with some occasional light drizzle. The game itself was a decent one and for the first 20 minutes or so it was a close contest, played out on an immaculate pitch. But then someone noticed some shit on the pitch. Then after it was removed, the visitors soon took the lead. But it was an own goal, with a Cranfield defender turning a cross from the left into his own net. Seven minutes later the lead was doubled, this time by way of a curling shot from the edge of the area. It’s always good when you happened to be standing behind the scorer in these instances because you get a perfect view of the goal. By now Pagnell were well in their stride and from here they never really looked back. Just before they break, they scored again when the ball was clipped over the advancing keeper. The score became 0-4 on 55 minutes, perhaps this had something to do with the rotund keeper distracted by a Kebab van arriving at the other end of the ground at the same time! After the fifth goal went in on 64 minutes Cranfield pulled a goal back from the spot on 77 minutes, given for handball. Then there a minor handbags scenario before Pagnell grabbed the last goal of the game, another own goal and a mirror image of the first one.
