With the leaves starting to change color, you should put away your White Claw and your rosé...Ok, fine, drink whatever you like whenever you like. For those living in temperate climates, changing seasons means discovering new beverages and food that go well with the weather. The Bellini Talking about some of the most popular drinks today, Bellini comes to mind first. A delightful wine cocktail created with white peach puree and Prosecco has a long history. Around 1934 and 1948, Giuseppe Cipriani started mixing up the fruity tipples at Harry's Bar in Venice, as per a cocktail connoisseur I met in a gin distillery Melbourne. The color of the drink reminded Cipriani of a saint's toga he saw in a painting by Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini, so he named the concoction after Bellini. The Kir In France, this popular aperitif of crème de cassis and white wine has long been popular, but it wasn't given its name until after World War II. Felix Kir, the mayor of Dijon from 1945 to 1968, was a huge fan of the cocktail, and he served it to visiting dignitaries whenever he entertained them. Kir did such an excellent job of promoting the cocktail to his visitors that it became inextricably linked with his personality, and today it is named after him, as narrated by an expert at a gin distillery in Melbourne. The Daiquiri What would you do if you were an American mine worker stuck in Cuba? How would you act if you were an American miner trapped in Cuba? Jennings Cox is an intrepid engineer who creatively mixes drinks. In 1905, Cox and some of his fellow Americans were hanging out in a bar in Santiago, Cuba, when they started mixing rum, lime, and sugar. After mixing together

these ingredients, the Americans came up with a tasty new tipple, which eventually reached the states. The Tom Collins A 19th century hoax gave its name to this refreshing summer drink. While out on the town, hundreds of New Yorkers heard some bad news: a certain Tom Collins had been smearing their good names. Despite not knowing Mr. Collins, these people often set out to find the rascal, who had slandered them. It's clear that there wasn't really a Tom Collins, but that didn't stop aggrieved parties from seeking him out. When people searched for Tom Collins, they found a long drink instead. As a joke, bartenders made the citrus cocktail that now bears the name. The Cosmopolitan In the years before Sex and the City helped boost the popularity of the Cosmo, various bartenders argued that they were the cocktail's "true"* creators. A variety of accounts suggest that the drink originated in Minneapolis, South Beach, San Francisco, Manhattan, and Provincetown, Massachusetts. Because the drink is basically just a kamikaze with cranberry juice, it's possible that bartenders at each location concocted it independently, so we may never know who was responsible for giving Carrie Bradshaw a glass. The Sazerac Despite not being the most widely known cocktail, the Sazerac is one of America's oldest and most delicious cocktails. Antoine Peychaud, a Creole pharmacist who invented the recipe and began serving it, came up with the recipe of rye whiskey, bitters, sugar, and absinthe or pastis in the 1830s. So popular was the Sazerac that Peychaud's apothecary soon gained a reputation as a place to get a rejuvenating potion. The Sazerac is currently going through a renaissance. Last year, Louisiana House of Representatives declared that the drink is the official cocktail of New Orleans after Kentucky distillery Buffalo Trace released two excellent straight rye whiskeys with the Sazerac name. The Negroni About 1919, Camillo Negroni is credited with coming up with this aperitif. Negroni enjoyed his Americano (Campari, sweet vermouth, and club soda), but wanted to give it a little more zip. To give the Negroni a little kick, he requested that the club soda be replaced with gin. The Black Russian This cocktail only has anything to do with Russia because it contains vodka. During his time at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, bartender Gustave Tops came up with the recipe in 1949 or 1950. At the time, Tops was serving as the ambassador to Luxembourg and was supposedly mixing Kahlua and vodka for Perle Mesta, an American socialite.

Long Island Iced Tea At least the Long Island part of the name is accurate, even though it doesn't actually contain tea. A spring break favorite since the early '80s, this cocktail is fairly young as cocktails go. It was created in 1976 by Rosebud Butt, a bartender at the Oak Beach Inn in Hampton Bays. If you ever need a patron saint of terrible hangovers and nights spent falling off bar stools, Rosebud Butt may be your man.
