Borobudur is a temple complex of eminent beauty from the ninth century, near Magelang on the isle of Java, Indonesia. The symbolism of its round form is that of the perfect, sevenfold human being (the Buddha), who has returned to the unity. The square terrace represents a throne; the square harmika symbolises the radiant head sanctuary, with a crown on top of it. It is the spiritual creation of one brilliant artist, of one who ‘knows’ and who was able to express the ideal, spiritual aspect of everything. The building speaks the language of the path; its deeper, sober, spiritual beauty rather touches the receptive, seeking soul more than only what meets the eye.
