SEMINAR The 28th of February saw the Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE) hold their Spring Seminar, returning to the excellent venue at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. An impressive attendance by both members and associates led to both a busy concourse and packed seminar room for the days six presentations. Current IDE President, Steve Jack, welcomed everyone to the event before introducing the first of the day’s speakers. Taking charge of the lectern as first speaker of the day was Simon Davies, General Manager of Veolia Environmental Services. Speaking about one of the largest opportunities for demolition contractors, the North Sea Oil and Gas fields and their decommissioning, Mr Davies held the attendees attention with a very informative discussion on the complexities and possible benefits to the UK demolition industry.
Returning from the interval, the audience were greeted with Ian Wharton from RVA Group talking about the pros and cons of obtaining and executing demolition contracts away from the UK shores. Completing the industry related morning session was Wayne Bagnall. Independent Demolition and Safety Consultant, Mr Bagnalls presentation was about the dismantling and demolition of a pair of travelling cranes at Salford Docks in Manchester and the problems encountered with both public disapproval for the demolition and the issues with restricted access for the project.
While the mornings industry related speakers all provided very impressive and informative insights into their specialist fields, possibly the days most well received speaker had no connection with the demolition industry whatsoever. Taking the stage before the lunch break was an inspirational young man who possibly received the most attentive audience of the days Solicitor Stuart Vincent from SV proceedings. Stephen Sutton is a 19 Armstrong was next to take the stage. year old terminal cancer sufferer who Mr Vincent is a specialist solicitor has created a bucket list of things he defending individuals and companies wants to do before he, well, kicks the and his presentation on legal challenges bucket! to the HSE and in particular the fee for intervention sparked some very interesting debates in the hall with the HSE themselves!

Diagnosed with cancer in 2010 at the age of 15 with stage 3B colorectal cancer he underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his bowel, followed by a gruelling 6 months of chemotherapy. Although the treatment had all manner of side effects Stephen was determined not to let it and the diagnosis get on top of him. As a teenager he kept pushing himself to socialise with friends and take part in as many of his favourite sports as he could. Doctors advised him to take a year out of school and while many teenagers would jump at the chance, Stephen continued with his studies and at the end of the year received 5A*’s, 4A’s and 2 distinctions in his GCSEs. In the Summer of 2011 Stephen thankfully found himself in remission however in October he found a lump in his leg and in December it was confirmed that the cancer had returned. Stephen kept up with his studies and at the end of year 12 got an A* in A level Maths, A’s in AS Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and an A in self-taught AS Psychology. Recent scans have shown the tumour has continued to grow and spread and this has spurred Stephen on to leave his mark on the world. In January 2013 Stephen decided to share his life and outlook with the world, starting off by making a Facebook page called
Stephen’s Story. So far his efforts have raised over £160,000 through events ranging from charity quizzes, to a skydive to dinner parties. With over 12,500 dedicated Facebook fans and over 16,000 followers on Twitter, Stephen wants to inspire people with motivational quotes, humour and positivity. Returning from the excellent lunch break, the afternoon session commenced with a presentation from Peter Baldwin, Senior Hygienist with the Health and Safety Laboratory. Mr Baldwin, spoke to the attendees about a very emotive subject; asbestos and silica related diseases. The Health and Safety Laboratory have recently completed in-depth surveys about the increase of asbestos and silica related diseases. Philip Baker, Managing Director of BPS Solutions took to the stage to inform the audience on the proposed revisions to the CDM Regulations. With CDM always a talking point, the presentation produced some lively discussions. The closing presentation was given by Steve Jack from Magnox Ltd. With many sites coming to the end of their working life, Mr Jack outlined the processes which Magnox adopt for managing the decommissioning of nuclear power stations using framework contractors.
