REPORT OF

Philanthropy 2020-2021

Letter from the HEAD OF SCHOOL

Each day when I step onto campus, I am inspired by the dedication, resiliency, and spirit of the RPDS community. For generations we have been joyfully committed to celebrating childhood while remaining focused on providing our students with an outstanding BEN KETCHUM academic experience; one that prepares them for Head of School the future and develops the habits and skills that lead to ethically-minded students who are empathetic, engaged, responsible, and accomplished. For 73 years we have enthusiastically fulfilled this mission by focusing on intellectual growth, faith formation, service to others, and strong character development. This work is truly meaningful and is reflective of the strong RPDS community, one that is passionate about shaping the hearts and minds of RPDS students. We remain energized by the strength of RPDS today and look to our future with great optimism and zeal. This Report of Philanthropy highlights this legacy of excellence and celebrates the commitment our families, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends have made to RPDS and its educational mission. We recognize and appreciate the combination of our innovative and inspired faculty, generous and enthusiastic support from our community of donors and volunteers, and rich traditions that make RPDS the outstanding school it is today. Thank you for inspiring and investing in the Riverside experience. In this publication we are excited to share stories from those in our community who hold the RPDS mission near and dear to their hearts and have invested in the journey. The following stories show just how deeply the RPDS experience impacts not only our current students, but also the lives of our parents, grandparents, and alumni. I remain truly grateful to the entire RPDS community for generously supporting our mission and for helping RPDS carry on its important and transformational work. With a grateful heart, I thank you for your unwavering dedication and deep commitment to our School. The vitality of the school, the incredible education, and the delight of our students is a direct reflection of your ongoing love and support of RPDS. With gratitude, BEN KETCHUM Head of School

Letter from the DIRECTOR OF

ADVANCEMENT The past 20 months of my professional association with RPDS have allowed me a continuing appreciation for the rhythm of school life – planning and carrying out seasonal activities that rarely deviate from year to year and that provide comfort in an otherwise DOUG WALKER ambiguous external environment. Even though I Director of Advancement was reintroduced to RPDS during the pandemic, my reunion with this venerable school has been joyful and extremely rewarding. There is a palpable energy at RPDS, strengthened through innovation, teamwork, and a nurturing ethos. I am honored to be associated with this great community. Your generosity is most inspiring. The 2020-2021 school year was a remarkable one for RPDS philanthropy. All of the School’s annual giving programs – the Promise Fund, Capers, Do-athlon, and special giving projects – provided significant increases from recent years. These important gifts allowed RPDS to flourish during an extraordinary time of uncertainty. And to further demonstrate donor confidence in our mission, the Riverside Cornerstone Capital Campaign was launched, fulfilling the dreams of many among the Riverside Presbyterian Church and School community, and generating excitement for new facilities and an increased endowment. The profiles of the School’s faithful benefactors in this Report of Philanthropy share common themes of enduring legacy and trust. These stories highlight alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends who believe in advancing the RPDS mission today and in the years ahead. They are committed to sustaining the best learning experience for children in grades Pre K-3 through 6, furthering our tradition of excellence for 73 years. These are exciting times for RPDS. Thank you for being an important member of the Riverside Presbyterian community. Most sincerely, DOUG WALKER Director of Advancement

TH E BA R ROW FAM I LY Amy and Joe Barrow are passionate about the importance of education and providing children with a strong foundation. Joe states, “From my perspective, education is the distinguishing factor in whether a person will succeed or not. Our society places a great deal of emphasis on the importance and expectation of education.” Amy and Joe Barrow brought their daughter Julia (‘19) to RPDS when she was in 1st Grade. Amy explains, “The School’s reputation brought us in. We had heard such great things about RPDS and that it was truly the place to be.” Joe adds, “The educational focus of RPDS, the overall experience it provides its students, and the caring community were the main factors that brought us to the School.” Change can be very challenging for a child, especially coming into a new school. Julia recalls her experience coming to RPDS: “When I started in 1st Grade I only knew of two people at the School. By the end of that year, I had met so many people, many of which have remained close friends of mine to this day. RPDS was such a great community to grow up in. At RPDS, if I messed up in any way, I knew it wouldn’t hurt me because there were so many people, from our teachers, coaches, to my classmates, to help build me up. RPDS really taught me the importance of community.” Alongside their daughter, Amy and Joe Barrow also immersed themselves in the school community. Amy shares, “When Julia was a student, I really enjoyed being involved at the School. Being able to do things such as attend the weekly chapel services and establish good rapport with the teachers was special and, I feel, really helped our family feel even more connected to the school community.” The Barrow family values philanthropy in its various forms, whether monetary support or supporting through gifts of service. Joe has been involved in the school community through his many years of service as a member of the School’s Board of Trustees. Joe explains, “RPDS has a certain reputation, and in order to continue that reputation of excellence, the School requires resources. Long ago I realized that the educational experience is not funded by tuition alone. It needs to be complimented by philanthropic efforts in order to continue and grow. That’s the reason we call it an ‘educational experience’ at Riverside, not just an education. At RPDS it is the sports, the leadership development, service opportunities, the field trips, and so forth, that take our students beyond education.” Amy adds, “I don’t think there is anything more important than supporting our youth. Their education is what is going to take them through life.” Julia is now a freshman in high school but explains RPDS will always hold a special place in her heart. “I still miss RPDS sometimes, just because of the experience I had. Especially in 6th grade, that last year was so much fun. Whenever I hear of RPDS or look on social media, there is a lot of warmth and nostalgia. I haven’t had a chance to really return back to the school but look forward to remaining connected as I move forward.” Although their daughter has graduated and is excelling in her new school, Amy and Joe Barrow explain they will continue to support RPDS as alumni parents. “The experience my daughter came away with was very helpful with preparing her for the next step. It grounded Julia in a way only RPDS can do. Julia probably doesn’t even realize yet the solid foundation that RPDS provided for her, which helped her excel in middle school and will continue to support her success in high school and college, too.” The Barrow family remains committed to supporting RPDS to provide that educational experience, impactful community, and solid foundation that was so meaningful to their family for future generations.

“I don’t think there is anything more important than supporting our youth. Their education is what is going to take them through life.”

“When I think of what sets Riverside apart from other schools, it is the strong curriculum coupled with the love that is found here. Love and warmth surrounds you on this campus. There is a deep kinship. You always feel safe, secure, and surrounded by love here.”

No one quite knows the journey that Riverside has gone through or played such an integral part in the history of RPDS quite like Jan Andrews.

The Andrews legacy continued through Jan’s younger sons, Joe (‘92)

from its inception, Jan is a proud alumna of the first graduating class (‘59). Jan explains, “I feel so lucky and thankful for the education I received at RPDS as a child. I truly believe RPDS is the best elementary program in Jacksonville and want to do whatever I can so other children and families can benefit from the experience of the Riverside Way.” The Riverside Way stands for eight words that describe the traits that RPDS students demonstrate inside and outside the classrooms. These words are Respect, Responsible, Persevere, Praise, Dependable, Dedicated, Seek, and Serve. Realizing the strong foundation she and her sister, Suzanne Felton (‘65), formed as students at RPDS, when it came time for Jan and her husband to decide where their children would start their education, Jan explained the choice was obvious. “When I think of what sets Riverside apart from other schools, it is the strong curriculum coupled with the love that is found here. Love and warmth surround you on this campus. There is a deep kinship. You always feel safe, secure, and surrounded by love here. As a parent, there is nothing more you could want for your child.” In July of 1980, the summer before Jan’s oldest son Jamie was supposed to start PreK 4 at RPDS, the family was in a horrible car accident. Jamie tragically did not survive and never had the chance to start his journey at Riverside. “Following the accident, my family decided to set up a scholarship in Jamie’s name, the Jamie Andrews Memorial Scholarship Fund. Although Jamie was never able to attend RPDS personally, in a way

and Jonathan (‘96). Jan shared that her youngest son made his dearest, lifelong friends here at RPDS, starting in PreK 4, and now many of those friends have returned to RPDS for their children’s schooling. Jan has been in the role of student, parent, and board member at RPDS but explains her newest role as an RPDS grandparent of Loughran (‘28) and Adger Andrews (‘30) and watching the third generation of her family attend the School has been one of the neatest experiences. Soon, two more Andrews will be coming to RPDS. With a new generation beginning their journey at RPDS, the Riverside Cornerstone Capital Campaign underway, and the School’s milestone 75th anniversary on the horizon, Jan believes it’s an exciting season for the Riverside community and a season that needs support in order for the School to continue to become bigger and better. Jan thinks it’s not about what you give but giving what you can. “Tuition does not begin to cover the cost of the outstanding and unique programs RPDS is providing its students. If we want to make this School the best in town, we must give what we can, whether that’s a financial gift to The RPDS Fund or gifts of time through volunteering and service. Through my service on the board, and particularly working with the finance committee, I’ve seen firsthand the wonderful things the School can do with these gifts. “I hope what I’m doing is thanking and giving back to RPDS for the wonderful education I, and so many in my family, have received at RPDS.”

RUTHIE AN D S IDNEY SIM M ONS For over 20 years, Ruthie and Sidney Simmons have been engaged in supporting the life and growth of the RPDS community. Ruthie and Sidney Simmons’s first connection with RPDS was as parents when their sons Sidney and Ben entered as 5th and 1st Grade students. “My husband and I were looking for a more rigorous curriculum and wanted to ensure our children were prepared for middle school and future academic success. We knew instantly that RPDS was what we wanted, due to its outstanding reputation and the robust community experience it would provide.” When Ruthie’s youngest child entered 5th Grade, she decided she wanted to return to her profession as a teacher. Ruthie explains, “I missed teaching. I had done some subbing while my children were here. A 2nd Grade position became available, and after seeing my children and how they thrived here, I wanted to be a part of providing that for other families.” Ruthie spent a few years teaching both 2nd and 1st Grades before moving onto the administrative team as Director of Admission. “I have loved touring prospective families and making connections. What makes Riverside is the classroom experience and the teachers. It’s walking into a classroom and seeing happy and engaged children with a teacher who is experienced and truly passionate about what they’re doing.” One of Ruthie’s favorite things about working in admission has been the surprise connections she finds when she was touring or speaking with a prospective family. She remembered an instance when a young couple came to tour the school, and during their initial conversation to get to know the family, the husband shared that when he was growing up, he played on a soccer team with one of Ruthie’s sons and several other RPDS students. Ruthie recalled the moment, saying, “He came in and said, ‘You probably don’t remember me, but I played soccer with your son and respected him and my other teammates who attended RPDS so much, that now as a father, I’ll do anything so my son can grow up like that.’ ” Making the Riverside education accessible for all is something Ruthie and Sidney have always been very passionate about. “I’ve always given to The RPDS Fund since I was a parent and through each year as an administrator,” Ruthie says. “I know tuition does not cover the entire cost of all the RPDS provides. This is a special place. I saw the value every day I was on campus. I saw these children when they began their Riverside journey and what they were capable of when they left here. Our support helps nurture the whole child. My husband and I want to make this experience accessible to everyone.” This summer, Ruthie is retiring from RPDS, after 18 years of serving this school community with unwavering warmth, kindness, and passion. Although stepping away professionally, Ruthie explains she will remain connected and dedicated to the School’s continued success. “I never want to let go of this place. When you’ve been here so long, it’s a part of your life. This School will always be a part of who I am and my family. Now, I get to enjoy RPDS as a grandparent. Watching my granddaughter, Sofia, start her journey at RPDS this year has been incredibly special. Seeing new generations start at Riverside reinforces that I want this School to be around for another 75 years. Support from the community and families is what helps maintain the life and integrity of the School.”

ENDOWMENT

Funds

The Riverside Presbyterian Day School endowment is an aggregation of assets invested by the School to support the School’s educational mission in perpetuity. Annually, the RPDS Endowment supports operations in two prominent areas: 1) providing need-based financial assistance, and 2) supporting faculty and curricular development. All gifts to the Riverside Presbyterian Day School endowment are restricted and invested to preserve the corpus of each donation, as well as to ensure that each donor’s specific restrictions are honored. In such investing, it is the revenue produced and the appreciation of the fund as a whole that provide support for the operating budget of RPDS.
