Have you ever been so angry at a careless car driver that you flipped the driver off, yelled an obscenity or maybe even kicked a dent in the driver’s vehicle? I have done both of the first two at different times in my riding career. I have even – briefly – considered following the errant driver to their destination to give them a piece of my mind. My guess is that many of you have acted similarly. Recently, two of our fellow enthusiasts, who felt wronged by inattentive drivers, let their anger overcome their better sense and unleashed the rage they felt on the drivers. In one case, the early-20s female cager chased down the motorcyclist and ran him over, killing him. In the other, a BMW driver sideswiped the rider, knocking him to the pavement. Fortunately, he was only slightly injured. You have probably read about other similar situations in the news. As aggravating as these situations are, the motorcyclists were at least partially responsible for the violence perpetrated against them. No, I’m not suggesting the motorcyclists were at fault. What I am saying is that we riders are putting ourselves at great risk when we challenge people driving cars or trucks. We never know whether the person in that cage is rational. Apparently, many are not. In the battle between a car and our motorcycle, WE CAN NOT WIN. We might get some self satisfaction by pointing out their dangerous behavior but how likely are we to actually change it through our outrage. Despite all the warnings about inattentive driving, keeping eyes on the road, avoiding texting, eating or applying makeup, etc., drivers continue to do those things. Our outrage, curses, threats, and even changes to the law make no difference to their behavior. As they have driven, so will they continue to drive no matter what we say or do. We have only one intelligent option –
avoidance and escape. We need to get away from the driver/situation as quickly and safely as possible. I imagine that some readers are In the June 2015 issue, we now thinking, “No effing way am I going to published Pedro Gregorio’s column, let some dumbass driver get away with The Skinny On…Triple Therapy. Winter Off-Road Riding in Central Florida by Gene Southard After the holidays had passed, I started thinking about heading to Florida again. This year I stayed in the Lake Wales area again.(see April 2014 issue) Jim Trice let me stay with him. He has a nice home on 15 acres bordering the state forest. To get there, you travel through several miles of orange groves before reaching his home. On any given night, you can see all kinds of wildlife out in the yard. The wild turkey are out almost every night along with armadillo, coon, deer, fox and the occasional alligator in one of the two lakes that are on the property. The pair of sand hill cranes that had been nesting hatched two chicks the previous week. The wild boar should be avoided while riding your street bike. This year, I took my Honda CRF along with my Beemer. I was pleasantly surprised at how many places there are in central Florida to ride dirt bikes. The closest from the house is the Lake Wales bog. It covers an area of about three miles by one mile and, as the name implies, it has lots of water. Some of the water crossings can be three feet deep. Just don’t blow a berm or you might be in the swamp. It has lots of woops and berms but is best if you have a quad because there are several miles of deep sand trails. Another location to ride is about ten miles east of town. It is much larger but does not have any single track; only miles and miles of fire roads. And because of all the rain, this year there was lots of water. Bring the snorkel for your quad if you ride there. The Florida Trail Riders have several clubs in Florida; the local club is the Sunrunners. I emailed the club president, Jack Terrell, and he invited me to their monthly meeting in Lakeland. It was held at the Lakeland Country
Corral. After the meeting, we all had a great meal that the club was nice enough to cover. Everyone wanted to hear of my travels and stories that I had written. I also received an invitation to their ride on the club grounds near Bartow, only a short distance from where I was staying. The following week, I attended the Hare Scrambles in Okeechobee. The track was very flat because Florida is just one big sand bar. The track had lots of berms, woops and palmetto roots. How can a plant have such a large root, sometimes six inches in diameter? The turn out was great with more than 600 riders during the two days. Several riders from up north come to Florida during the winter to compete in the hare scramble series. I next attended the yearly Flywheelers antique tractor show in Fort Mead. I always enjoy looking at the restored 1900s motorcycle and bicycle shop and telling all my friends that I am old enough to know how to work on the Simplex they have on display there. This year, they also had a motorcycle Dome of Death where they were riding around in a wooden dome. I wonder who the first motorcyclist was who said “Let’s get on our bikes and ride around inside this small, round dome?” Two days before the races at Daytona started, my nephew from Muskegon arrived. We rode our street bikes to Sebring sports car track to watch sports car testing and ride some dirt before heading to Daytona.
We camped in the infield and attended the Endurocross, won by Cody Webb, and the Supercross, won by Ryan Dungey. I was so tired even the partiers in the infield didn’t keep me awake. On Sunday, we headed for Ocala National Forest to do some dirt riding. Last year, we attended the GNCC hare scrambles, but this year the drive would have been too long to make the pro race, so we headed for the Big Scrub campground located in the middle of the national forest. There are two riding areas in that forest. The Ocala north trails have some motorcycle-only single track. I have heard that they are not well maintained and are very slow speed. The other is Wandering Wiregrass trail but this trail is not very challenging. At Big Scrub, we were greeted by John and Yvonne, the camp hosts. They maintain the newly remodeled campground and were helpful in setting up our camp and finding the best trails to ride. There are two loops out of the campground. The longest is 47 miles and circles a US Navy bombing range. We also met Roy and his wife who maintain the trails.

2 Ride the World: 12 Years & 400,000 Miles Presentation review by Ray Peabody Adventure: 1a : an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks; 1b : the encountering of risks <the spirit of adventure>; 2 : an exciting or remarkable experience <an adventure in exotic dining> 3: an enterprise involving financial risk (www.merriamwebster.com/dictionary/) When I think of adventure, I think about weekend or weeklong motorcycle trips to somewhere I haven’t previously visited. Hopefully, a scenic area with water and hills or mountains with opportunities to camp and hike. Perhaps it’s my age. Or maybe I’m not adventurous enough. I don’t often think of selling everything, hopping aboard the cycle and traveling to far off lands for years at a time. Fortunately, there are folks who do just that and I enjoy more exotic adventures vicariously through their trips and the stories they tell. One such couple is Lisa and Simon Thomas. In 2003, Lisa quit her job and Simon sold his three companies to tour the world by motorcycle. They didn’t know how long they would be on the road. They thought they might travel for 18 months and had identified 122 countries they would like to visit. The couple admits they had much to fear as they prepared for departure; leaving family and friends, losing their incomes, and heading off into the unknown. Despite those concerns, they launched on May 23, 2003. 12 years and 400,000 miles later, Simon and Lisa visited BMW Motorcycles of Grand Rapids and presented a pictorial, video and verbal summary of their years on the road.
appearances, their route focused on specific sites they wanted to see and people they wanted to visit. The couple tackled the Sahara desert after just two days experience riding off road. They suffered from a lack of water and dehydration. They crossed minefields and lived with Tuareg nomads for five weeks. The Tuareg chief had never eaten a meal with a woman before Simon and Lisa visited. During the leg of the trip that took them through the Amazon, Simon fell from an a
dilapidated bridge and cracked his neck. With no help anywhere nearby and no way to communicate with the outside world, the couple had to ride out Continued on page 14

ASK Dr. Cycholl Q&A Column For Your Questions Relating to Motorcycle Safety, Riding Techniques and Touring By Maurice “Moe” D. Cycholl
Dear Dr. Cycholl, I have always been a fan of Buell motorcycles but have not bought one. Now that the company is gone, I have no choice but used bikes. What do you think of buying a bike made by a defunct company? Trent Goodson Dear Trent, Buell had some good ideas but, in my opinion, they were held back by their use of the under performing Sportster engines. Their frames were innovative, the perimeter brakes, fuel in the frames, oil in the swing arm, mass centralization of weight, all interesting ideas. They had some questionably styled air boxes and mufflers. Selling them exclusively at Harley dealers was tough, too. Buyers looking to buy a Harley were unlikely to be interested in a Buell and those looking to buy more sporting bikes weren’t walking into H-D dealerships. Bad marketing. I used to joke with the folks at Motor City H-D that, if you went to the headwaters of the Amazon River, the locals could tell you what a Harley-Davidson was but, at the bowling alley next to the dealership, you would have to hunt for someone who would know what a Buell was. When Harley finally let them source an engine and trans from Rotax, they had a bike that
could compete with other sport bikes in the marketplace and on the race track. While these bikes were vastly better in most ways than the earlier models, they had some serious design problems, too. For example, despite being designed specifically for the Rotax V twin, the engine had to be removed from the frame to replace the two sparkplugs!! No one noticed that before the bike made it into production? Or was it thought to be acceptable? Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, HD pulled the plug on Buell. Buying one at this point is a risky proposition. No one will be enthusiastically supporting these bikes with parts or service. Buyer beware. Surprisingly Eric Buell has somehow revived the company under the name EBR (Eric Buell Racing). At this point they are offering a few models based on the last designed bikes from the old company. I do not know if they will be supporting any of the old bikes. There will be a small dealer network at least at first, and the bikes are expensive. The company and their new bikes look promising though. Don’t forget to ask about how to change the plugs. I wish them success. (Editor’s note: at the time this response was originally written, Erik Buell Racing was still in business. The company recently went bankrupt.) Thank you, Dr Cycholl
Dear Dr. Cycholl, I love the look of a custom chopper and it looks like I can get a significant deal if I buy one used. Is there a brand to avoid or another reason not to buy one? Wild Billy Bones Dear Mr Bones, The custom chopper fad is on the decline.
This leads to a surplus of choppers on the used market. True, many of them look like a deal. Their original owners often paid huge money for them and now are willing to sell them for much less than half of what they paid. Part of the reason for the low prices is that no one recognizes any but a few of the manufacturer’s names. Even the most famous will be nearly totally forgotten in a few years when you may want to sell. You should realize why many are for sale. First choppers may look cool but they don’t work well as motorcycles. Many have rigid frames with no rear suspension which will beat the crap out of you. Tiny little seats. Little ground clearance for bumps. Parts drag in any lean angle. Vibrating loud engines. Raked out front forks that won’t turn well. Ineffective brakes, questionable engineering and poor reliability. Virtually none can be comfortably ridden any distance. In short, they are side stand queens that are best left parked. Is this the type of bike you really want? If so, yes, you can find a deal compared to buying new or building one yourself. Personally, I want a bike to ride. You might too. If a bike doesn’t ride well, what good is it? Thank you, Dr Cycholl Dr. Maurice D. Cycholl is a worldrenowned expert in Motorcycle Safety, Riding Techniques and Touring. In addition, while he is not a recognized expert in motorcycle mechanics, he does possess a fair degree of knowledge in the area of mechanical, and electrical systems found on many motorcycles. He welcomes your questions on these subjects. While you may submit questions on any subject, his advice on other subjects may, or may not be, as reliable. Continued from page 6 - Florida Riding They grade the trails every week and it shows. They are in excellent condition. The next day we started on the loop and soon decided that it was more suited for quads and side-bysides so we took off on the fire trails. The ranger said that we were legal to ride any of the numbered trails as long as we were on street legal bikes. There had to be hundreds of miles of these trails. The next morning, we drove to the Lake George Ranger Station and ranger Rosie gave us maps detailing all the numbered trails in the forest. It would be very easy to get lost without a good map and a compass. I am sure that a good GPS unit would work great but I am old fashioned and still like my map and compass. That afternoon, we were riding just a short distance from the bombing range when three A-10 Warthog jets started doing passes at the range. Next they starting doing dives and firing their machine guns. Am I glad the pilots knew where the range stopped and the forest started. While taking a break deep in the forest, out comes a pick up truck hauling a load of harvested crop. I have been riding in Mexico long enough not to ask questions when someone is growing crops deep in the forest. The ranger had told us that there is sometimes illegal activity going on in the forest. Her suggestion was that we just keep on riding and look the other way. In three days of riding, we did not scratch the surface of what there is to ride in Ocala. Ocala riding was one of the highlights of this winter. It is now at the top of my “return to” list. After returning to Lake Wales, my nephew Tod headed home and I got ready for a two-day ride on the Sunrunners club grounds. The club has access to 2,700 acres of old phosphate strip mine land. Most clubs could only dream of having that much land on which to hold events. On the first day, we rode a lot of their Hare Scrambles course around several lakes with lots of single
track. The ground was very different from other places Jim for giving me a nice place to stay. And John and that I had ridden in Florida. Lots of dirt and rock, not Yvonne along with Roy and his wife at the Big Scrub much sand. I had to change my suspension settings for campground for helping us have a great ride. Also John this ride. That night, the club put on a large buffet feast and Sharon of ADV Monster for their help in finding the of ribs and chicken. All I wanted to do that night was best places to ride. Test Ride
2016 BMW R 1200 RS by Ray Peabody Building an effective sport-touring motorcycle is a tough target to hit. Most manufacturers have tried and, more often than not, failed. If they get the sport performance and handling side right, the rider’s body is racked with pain after a short time in the saddle. If they get the plush ride and rider body position right, the motorcycle suspension is squishy, dives under hard braking, and makes strafing the curves a much less confident process. Skepticism is the mind set of the rider seeking a motorcycle that offers the best of both worlds. With that skepticism front of mind, I

recently tested the 2016 BMW R 1200 RS. The R 1150 RS was the last model BMW designed as a sportoriented touring bike. While the looks of that earlier RS were appealing, the sporting capabilities of that bike were lacking. The touring-oriented BMW R 1200 RT, an excellent motorcycle overall, is comfortable but less capable of spirited riding as a sport tourer. BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan (BMWMCSEM) had only recently received their new RS demo bike when I asked to take it out for a ride. It seemed like a good opportunity to get out ahead of the competition with a review. Based on appearances, the new RS looked as if it might lean more towards sporting performance than touring comfort. BMWMCSEM owner, John Horner, reviewed the operation of the RS with me and pointed out a few of the upgrades. One of the more important changes is the use of cartridge-style forks instead of BMW’s telelever front suspension system. He also demonstrated the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) operational modes, explained the Automatic Stability Control system, and described the use of the Shift Assist Pro system which allows the rider to shift up or down at speed without the use of the clutch. Operating instructions completed, it was time to ride. One thing I noticed almost immediately after starting the RS was the lack of “engine torque twist” when revving the engine. The feeling that the ngine is trying to tip over when the rpms are increased has always been noticeable on boxer bikes. (Admittedly, I don’t remember whether I felt it while testing the R 1200 RT last year.)

2016 BMW R 1200 RS. Not a poseur. Apparently, some combination of an engine balancer and the transmission now positioned inside the engine case have nearly eliminated that torque twist. (I’m quite certain there’s a better explanation than what I just provided but the point is that it worked.) My test plan was to take the freeway west from the dealership before exiting and taking the two-lane backroads on the return. At the end of the entrance ramp to the freeway, I was surprised to see the speedometer pushing past 90, heading towards a ton. I had been in the saddle less than five minutes was already breaking laws at felony high speeds. Rolling off the throttle, I settled in to a closer-tolegal 75 miles per hour. The electronic cruise control ensured that I would maintain that speed. So far, so good. The RS is powered by the 1170cc, 125 horsepower, fuel-injected, water-cooled, Continued on page 13

Suffering from partial paralysis and blurred vision, Simon had to rest frequently. Eventually, they made it to civilization and a hospital. Simon spent several weeks in bed recovering. In another part of Africa south of the Shara, they awoke one morning to find a pride of young lions passing through their campsite. In Mongolia, they found beautiful people and exquisite scenery. In Siberia, mosquitoes were unbearable. In Borneo, Simon crashed hard while riding with a tour. He was injured and the motorcycle nearly totaled. While he recovered, Sunny Cycles repaired his BMW R 1150 GS with many parts provided by Touratech, one of the their sponsors. Not only did Touratech send replacement parts of their products, they also purchased and shipped needed BMW parts for Simon’s bike. Along the way, the
couple learned many important lessons. They gained confidence in their abilities to handle any situation that arose. They learned that they could depend on one another to come through when situations were difficult and events challenged their ability to continue. They learned that most stereotypes about people around the world were at best inaccurate and, at worst, hateful and racist. People have been friendly and helpful everywhere they traveled. They only paid two bribes in all the time they’ve been traveling. They also learned that people always arrive when you need them most.
They also learned a great deal about motorcycle setup, gear, camping equipment, and food. Simon indicated that there is no one best motorcycle for adventure travel. The key is that the rider love the bike he or she rides. It should have an extra large fuel tank, high-quality adjustable suspension, and a 21" tire up front. They carried essential replacement parts and tools. He emphasized the importance of knowing which tools the adventure rider would likely need for the trip. Both Simon and Lisa are foodies with Lisa being the primary cook. She carries the spices she needs and buys foods locally. Locals are quite helpful in describing various foods and offering recipes for preparation. The presentation was lively and interesting with an entertaining banter between the two travelers. Their use of still pictures, maps, and video helped paint a picture of their story in vivid colors. It’s impossible to cover every aspect of their presentation in these few pages. Suffice it to say that it was a wonderfully entertaining evening. Their trip fits the definition of adventure precisely. For more information about Lisa and Simon, visit their website at www.2ridetheworld.com or their Facebook page for regular updates about their travels.

Test Ride
2015 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim by Ray Peabody I’m a fan of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. My first motorcycle when I returned to motorcycle riding in 1995 was a 1984 FXSB Low Rider. Powered by the last of the Shovelhead engines, the Low Rider was gorgeous. Long and low with a flat drag handlebar and a big, fat fuel tank, it always got attention. It had only two weaknesses that I can remember: the rear shocks were so stiff that the ride was similar to that of a hard trail and the electrical system seemed always on the verge of dysfunction. I sold it four years later for the same money I paid for it. Had the roads and stiff suspension not punished my back over the many miles I rode her, the Low Rider would likely still be in my stable. Since that time, my appreciation for Harleys has continued. I’ve ridden and written about several but haven’t been sufficiently enamored with any model to buy. What I was seeking was Low Rider style with better suspension. I liked the look of the latest iteration of the Low Rider but haven’t ridden one. When the opportunity to ride the Softail Slim presented itself, I decided to give it a try. Mike Moakley, owner of Battle Creek Harley-Davidson, provided his Softail Slim demo for this test. F&I Manager Galen Christenson explained the Slim’s operation and suggested a route that would take me east to Marshall. Sitting astride the Slim before departing, several features grabbed my attention. First was the
low, 25.6" saddle height. Even the shortest riders should be able to sit with both feet flat on the ground while stopped. The second thing I noticed was the flat, slightly pulled back handlebar. The reach to the handlebar was comfortable allowing a slight forward lean. It was reminiscent of the handlebar position on my Low Rider. Third, out front of the handlebar, was the big black housing for the headlamp. The headlamp, combined with the handlebars and low, solo saddle gave the Slim a look similar to that of a bobber. Finally, the large analog speedometer was prominent on top of the fuel tank. The look is old school but it has a digital readout at the bottom of the face. A “Trip” button on the left handlebar allows the rider to shift the readout from odometer to trip meter to a clock to a gear / tachometer readout. The low saddle made the speedometer easily visible in the line of sight while riding. Switch the keyless ignition to the “On” position, wait for the fuel injection system to start, thumb the starter button and the 103 cubic inch, air cooled V-twin rumbles to life. I’m not a fan of loud bikes so the note emanating from the stock exhaust was just right; loud enough to hear the rumble but not so loud as to disturb everyone else. I clunked the heavy-duty, six-speed transmission into first gear and rolled out of the driveway heading east. My first impression is that it’s not a good idea to grab a handful of the front brake before

getting used to the feel. Pull too hard and you’re likely to stop shorter than desired and possibly fall over. My second impression, having ridden through a construction zone where the road surface levels varied an inch or so from the new asphalt to the areas where the old asphalt had been shaved off, was that the Softail suspension provided awesome bump absorption. My back didn’t complain at all about the rough road. Once out in the country, I set to cruising and exploring an area in which I’d not previously ridden. Continued from on page 18

Obtaining Motorcycle Endorsement Michigan law requires a motorcycle endorsement (CY) on a driver’s license to legally ride a motorcycle on the state’s roadways. Aside from being the law, studies have shown that unendorsed riders are significantly over-represented in traffic crash and fatality data. Studies by various sources have indicated that approximately 44% of accidents involving motorcycles involved unendorsed riders, and approximately 50% of Michigan’s fatal motorcycle accidents involve unendorsed riders. These statistics emphasize the need for unendorsed riders to get endorsed and receive the necessary rider training that goes therewith in order to improve motorcycle safety on the roadways. There are two alternatives for obtaining an endorsement. Alternative number 1: a rider must a. Successfully complete a certified motorcycle safety course; and b. Present the motorcycle safety course completion certificate to the Secretary of State, apply for the endorsement and pass a vision and written test. Motorcyclists under 18 years of age with a Michigan driver’s license are required to take the motorcycle safety course as well as anyone who fails the rider skills test (see below) twice. Alternative number 2: a rider must a. Pass vision and written tests at the Secretary of State and receive a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) that allows “practice riding while under the supervision of an endorsed rider; b. Pass a skills test through a third-party testing agency; and c. Present your skills test certificate to the Secretary of State and apply for the endorsement. TIP’s traditionally are effective for 180 days. However, in an effort to curb riders from indefinitely renewing their TIP without ever proceeding forward to pass a skills test and obtain an endorsement, recent legislation has limited a rider to no more than 2 TIP’s in a 10-year period. The Secretary of State had issued approximately 22,000 TIP’s in 2012 alone. This legislation will require riders to take the next step and pass the required skills test after obtaining their
TIP if they choose to continue to ride on Michigan roadways. Also, at the time of the drafting of this article, legislation was pending which would increase the penalty for riding without an endorsement from a fine of between $50.00 and $100.00 and/or jail time of no more than 90 days to a fine of no more than $500.00 and/or jail time of no more than 90 days for a first violation and a fine of no more than $1,000.00 and/or jail time of no more than 1 year for a subsequent violation. Both pieces of legislation are intended to reduce the alarming overrepresentation of unendorsed riders in traffic crashes and fatalities. Hopefully, with more endorsed riders on the roadway together with increased motorcycle awareness on the part of motor vehicle operators, we can move towards a safer motorcycling environment in Michigan for all riders. As always, if anyone has any questions or if I can be of legal assistance to you or anyone you know who has been injured in a motorcycle accident, please don’t hesitate to contact me as I deal with these types of claims on a daily basis on behalf of injured motorcyclists statewide. Further, for those readers who are members of any motorcycle organizations, clubs or groups, if you would like to have me come out to your group to speak or give a presentation on the legal rights of an injured motorcyclist or on any specific topic that your group may be curious about, please don’t hesitate to give me a call at (248-569-4646) or shoot me an e-mail at Dondi@buckfirelaw.com. I give presentations state-wide and there is never a charge associated with having me out. I enjoy having the opportunity to come out and meet motorcycle enthusiasts from all parts of our State!

Continued from page 15 - Softail Slim Test Mostly, I rode around in fourth gear. It’s torquey enough to allow speeds to slow to the 30 to 35 mph range without downshifting while also allowing for quick acceleration to 55 to 60 mph speeds by simply rolling on the throttle. The Slim is no skinny model. Weighing in at 701 pounds wet and ready to ride, it’s a heavy bike. But it doesn’t feel like a heavy bike. It’s well balanced and feels lighter while cruising. I wouldn’t suggest that we were strafing the apexes but the Slim and I weren’t dawdling through the curves either.
Some of the roads south of Marshall are terrible. Cracks, frost heaves, pot holes and big, tall patch work made for an interesting, bumpy ride. Repairs and Tune-Ups on All Motorcycles, ATVs & Mini-Bikes! Despite the rough road, Get Ready the Slim handled it all • Batteries • Tires • Brakes To Ride! with composure and • Accessories • Parts New / Used stability. My back surged • Oil Changes and Lube with pain on only the most severe of bumps. The ride back to the Used Motorcycles, ATVs dealership was smooth and Scooters Wanted! and stress free. I now Pick-Up and $$ Top Dollar Paid $$ understand the appeal of Delivery Service Running / Not Running cruising through the country side at less than optimal speeds. aboard my old Low Rider although I appreciated the more powerful engine, fuel injection and Softail suspension. My only nits to pick with the Slim are the directional signal switches (yes, that’s multiple) and the low saddle. There’s a directional signal switch a thumb’s reach distant from each handgrip. The switch by the left grip actuates the left turn signal. The switch by the right handgrip actuates the right turn signal. This is an old style switch that’s, frankly, a pain. Give me the single switch that operates both directional signals any day. The saving grace is the self canceling signals. I love that feature! The saddle is simply too low for my 34" inch inseam. By the end of the ride, I was feeling cramped. I see the value of the low saddle for short inseamed riders and style. It wasn’t as comfortable for me. As I get older, comfort becomes a bigger issue in my riding. Thanks much to Mike Moakley, Shannon Bessette, and Galen Christenson at Battle Creek Harley-Davidson for providing the Softail Slim for this test. MSRP for the 2015 Softail Slim: $15,899

Book Review
Lucifers Sword: Life and Death in an Outlaw Motorcycle Club by Phil Cross with Darwin Holmstrom Illustrated by Ronn Sutton Reviewed by Ray Peabody As a youngster, I was a big fan of comic books. Marvel superheroes like Captain America, Spiderman, the Fantastic Four and Thor were favorites but I also read a few of the DC Comics as well as Mad magazine and Vampirella. Lucifers Sword, a graphic novel, is like none of those (although Vampirella had some similar themes.) The story follows Mel “Frenchy” Bourget from a youngster excited every time he saw a motorcycle. As a teenager, he sold his coin collection to buy a BSA and promptly gets into a crash with a car. After a stint in the Navy, Frenchy buys a motorcycle and begins what becomes his journey into the world of 1%’er motorcycle clubs and everything that entails; fist fights, guns, bombs, sex and drugs. The action heats up when Frenchy’s club, Lucifers Sword, gets into a fight with Hermanos Satanas, a rival club. The war is on. Lucifers Sword covers themes similar to

those you’ll find in other books about 1% clubs. The story moves along quickly and the dialog is sparse because the illustrations, which are well done, carry the story quite well. Author Cross knows about which he writes. He started his 1%-er career as a Gypsy Joker before joining the Hells Angels where he remained a member for 40+ years. During that time, he was on the FBI’s most wanted list a couple times and spent time in prison. He wrote about his Hells Angels experience in this book, Phil Cross: Gypsy Joker to Hells Angel. While I can’t imagine living the 1%-er lifestyle, I enjoyed reading Lucifers Sword. It took a half hour or so reading the book and most of that time was spent looking at the illustrations. If you enjoy reading about 1% motorcycle clubs, you’ll probably also like this book. Published by Motorbooks and available at www.motorbooks.com/. Suggested retail price is $22.99 U.S.

July is Women’s Motorcycle Month by Jason Waechter, Esq. Women have been riding motorcycles longer than they’ve had the vote, but it’s plain to see that right now, there are more women motorcyclists out there than ever before. A recent Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) survey showed that about 25 per cent of motorcycle riders are women (includes passengers), and that about 12 per cent of motorcycle owners are women. To put it another way, in 2012, there were more than six-anda-half million women motorcyclists in the United States. I don’t know if that number has increased or not in the last three years, but considering that women’s’ involvement in the biker community has been increasing steadily for over three decades, it wouldn’t surprise me. Through the course of my work as The Motorcycle Lawyer, I have the privilege of helping a lot of motorcyclists, and as a biker myself, I always enjoy hearing their stories. This year in honor of Women’s Motorcycle Month, I put out a call via social media and my monthly newsletter asking female bikers to tell me why they ride. They did not disappoint… then again, I haven’t met very many shy women motorcyclists. I think the biggest theme in the responses I got was freedom. Some women consider motorcycle-time as “me-time”; a chance to focus on the road and not worry about the stresses in their lives. It can be cathartic for others, who find that controlling a big, powerful machine helps them feel in control of their lives more generally. One rider told me, “I ride because I like the wind in my face… it’s as close as I can get to flying.” Other women motorcyclists were looking for adventure, and found it on a motorcycle. Some were simply looking for a challenge, or a way to face their fears. Some women started riding because they were looking for themselves. One woman who
wrote to us said, “My kids were grown. I was divorced. My parents were gone. I wasn’t really a mom, a wife, or even a daughter anymore… I needed to be something. So I became a motorcyclist.” For many of us, being a biker isn’t just about ourselves, it’s about being part of the biker community as well. A motorcycle is an automatic icebreaker, and you can meet a lot of new people just by riding around. A lot of women seem to wait until their family is a little older before they start riding; many start out riding with their boyfriend or husband before moving up to the front of the bike. One woman told me she started riding with her boyfriend (now husband), but she bought her own bike because “I got tired of looking at the back of his helmet.” Others seem to have been born to ride. I got a message from a woman who started out riding with her dad when she was young. She said, “While I’d never let my kids on the bike as young as I was, I’m so glad I got to ride with my dad. I learned to ride a motorcycle before I learned to drive, and I still love it to this day.” The themes of the stories I heard from female motorcyclists… freedom, adventure, a challenge, independence, community… seem to be universal. In fact, reading the responses from our social media followers reminded me of the 2013 Kelton study that Harley-Davidson (H-D) Silver, 38,487 miles, $9,950 commissioned to try to Black, 72,000 miles, $9,750 understand what makes women Black, 11,951 miles, $4,450 riders tick. The women they Silver, 26,141 miles $6,950 surveyed also talked about Blue, 25,500 miles $4,500 freedom, adventure, Graphite, 62,682 miles, $8,450

challenging themselves, looking for independence, and expanding their community. The H-D study also found that 37 per cent of women motorcyclists report always feeling happy (vs. 16 per cent of non-riders), and 35 per cent of female bikers report always feeling confident (vs. 18 per cent of non-riders). More than 50 per cent of women riders attribute their happiness to riding a motorcycle. Finally, a whopping 74 per cent of women riders say their lives have improved since they started motorcycling. Female motorcyclists are changing the industry and the biker community, in my opinion, for the better. More motorcyclists means more voices demanding that vehicle drivers be motorcycle-aware. The more bikers, the larger the biker community, the greater sense of being part of something bigger than ourselves. The Preacher Speaks About ...
Clutches
Harley-Davidson
by Franz Hoffer Probably something we all have in the back our minds as we ride along our merry way is “what happens if my clutch tanks?” Or, “what if my clutch cable snaps?” What then? Well, I guess you are SOL as there is no backup system. About the only thing you can do if your clutch is inoperable for any reason is to stop the bike. A disabled clutch and the inability to down shift to slow down means applying the brakes until the bike stalls. Alternatively, you could somehow shift it into neutral and glide to a stop before shutting your bike down. You can shift without a clutch if you know within 2 or 3 mph where each gear’s sweet spots are. I’ve actually tried it and it works…but it’s only useful should an emergency arise. If your clutch goes, your bike will need to be towed to a service center or to your own garage to repair/replace it. I had a chance talk clutches with Jerry Battaglia, owner with wife Michelle of Jerry B’s Cycle Works (25430 Harper, St. Clair Shores, 48071, 586-773-BIKE). Here’s a summary of our conversation. There are two kinds of clutches on motorcycles: a wet clutch and a dry clutch. Wet clutches work with a special oil that cools the clutch. That oil is specially formulated for cooling, not so much for lubrication. That’s why most experts will tell you to use conventional, not synthetic, oils. Synthetics may afford greater lubrication (also debatable) but will not match the conventional oils as far as cooling ability. Most Harley’s have wet clutches. It’s easy to tell. In general, if your bike has a primary chain case that you fill with Primary Chain Case lubricant, your bike has a wet clutch system. The dry clutch system, on the other hand, is just that. No lubrication. You can hear the metal pieces rubbing together whenever you pull the clutch leverto shift. The dry clutch has one advantage in that it does not distribute or mix fine metal shavings in the oil which are ground off the clutch parts during clutch operation as it would in a wet system. You can see these shavings every time you empty/drain your primary chain case. Another difference is that the dry clutch doesn’t require as much assistance from the engine. But in general, a wet clutch will outlast a dry clutch by at least 15%. An alternative might be a semi-automatic clutch but I’ve only seen it on a Yamaha model. In my opinion, that’s just plain sacrilege…an automatic transmission motorcycle. I’m having a hard enough time accepting the electric concept project called LiveWire. So how can you ensure that your clutch will last as long as possible? First of all, make sure all components are properly adjusted; recommendation is at least every 5,000 miles. I am not an “All Star Mechanic” and I tried adjusting the clutch myself on my last bike (2001 Electra Glide Standard) because I thought I knew everything. I don’t. I ended up taking it to Jerry B to get it back into adjustment. If you don’t know what you are doing, take it to someone who does. According to Jerry B, a lot of people try to do their own clutch adjustments and end up with clutch problems. TM

Second, use a good quality Chain Case Lubricant. Jerry recommends changing out the chain case lubricant and transmission fluid every 5,000 miles. (Jerry likes Drag Specialties petroleum-based lubricants.) Third, but maybe most importantly, watch how you ride. Don’t ride the clutch and don’t let the clutch continually slip or engage hard unless you have a special clutch to handle the load. On my last bike, I had a Barnett racing clutch. That puppy was great! I could pretty much pop it into every gear and it didn’t matter; it was the right equipment for that type of riding. If you increase your horsepower (Stage One Big Bore Kit, etc), be sure that your stock clutch is strong enough to handle the increased load. There are three or four different diaphragm springs (variable thickness) available for more or less pressure. Never use a reduced effort clutch on high performance motors. Your mechanic will best be able to guide you on that decision. If you need to replace the clutch or clutch components, don’t skimp, always use the best parts available; you will save money in the long run. It’s a good practice to lube your clutch cable every so often. Jerry said that’s the most neglected item on the bike. “At least once a week, someone comes into the shop and wants an EZ or reduced effort clutch when all they really need is to lube the cable and adjust the clutch,“ Jerry said. “In some cases, cable lubrication will reduce lever effort by as much as 50%. Most cables are aircraft grade and will last a lifetime but taking those extra little steps makes sense and ensures longevity. Remember, your clutch is a consumable item, it will wear out at some point. Try to delay that day as along as possible. If you feel your clutch start to slip or your gears are not engaging smoothly, have the clutch checked.” As I write this, Harley-Davidson is in the process of sending out recall notices to owners of 2014 and 2015 Electra Glide Classic (twin cooled and Low), Ultra Limited (Low), Police Electra Glides, Street Glides, Street Glide Specials, and CVO Street Glides due to issues with the clutch master cylinder not performing. It’s serious enough to where H-D is specifying “no ride” until the clutch system is flushed and the master cylinder replaced. If you own one of these models and have not been contacted, call 1-800-258-2464 and reference recall # 0165. Have your VIN# handy. Dealers will pick up your bike, repair it and bring it back to you. The repair only takes about an hour, but the results of an unexpected clutch failure can be catastrophic to rider and passenger alike. I will be taking the Ride Like A Pro class from Gary Lewandowski in late June…will let you all know how good (or bad) I did in that effort. Our “Pure Michigan Ride” takes place from June 29th to July 3rd. Till next month, ride safe my friends.

MHDDA Announces Summer to Ride Tour
Grand Prize: a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle Lansing, Michigan – The Michigan Harley-Davidson Dealer’s Association (MHDDA) recently announced the 2015 Summer to Ride Tour. Like previous Passport Tours, the MHDDA is giving away a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle to one lucky Tour participant. This year’s Grand Prize is a new Harley-Davidson FLS Softail Slim. “We organized the Summer to Ride Tour to encourage riders to get out and explore Michigan on their motorcycles,” said Mike Moakley, owner of Battle Creek Harley-Davidson and President of the MHDDA. “By visiting participating dealerships around the State, Freedom Tour participants not only get to experience the beauty of Michigan from the saddle but also have the chance to win a new Harley-Davidson. What could be better than doing what you love while also having the chance to win a new bike?”
To register, participants can visit a local MHDDA dealership (a complete list can be found on the www.mhdda.com website or on page 22 of the current issue of Michigan Motorcyclist®) and sign up at the in-store kiosk. Once registered, participants can enter the drawing each day from June 15 through September 15, 2015 at any of the MHDDA dealerships. The more times riders enter, the better their odds of winning. In addition to the Grand Prize, each MHDDA Dealer will draw from their store’s entries for a $100 gift card from that store. Other prizes will be listed in the rules. The 2015 Freedom Tour runs from Monday, June 15 through the end of the day on Tuesday, September 15. The winner of the new Harley-Davidson will be drawn September 19 and the winner will be notified that same day. All motorcyclists, no matter what brand or style of motorcycle you ride, are encouraged to participate. Participants must be 18 years old to enter. Complete information, including all rules will be available at www.mhdda.com. The Michigan Harley-Davidson Dealer’s Association, established in 1938, is committed to inspiring the sport of motorcycling and promoting the unique culture and sense of community that only HarleyDavidson can provide. Our membership includes dealers of new and used Harley-Davidson motorcycles across the State of Michigan.
