The Isle of Man TT has concluded and we’re back in the States. The trip fulled one of my bucket list items. My only regret is that we didn’t spend more time on the island. We’ve included our review of the TT for you in this issue. It’s difficult to capture all elements of a week of races but we’ve tried to summarize the competition, the records set, our experience while there, attendance information, and some tips should you decide to attend one of the last great road races at some time in the future. We used so much space for the TT story and pics that we didn’t have room for much else. That said we think the other articles included in this issue are well worth a read. Contributor Vincent Cardinale is back this month with his review of Nanotips. Most of us have had the experience of operating our touch screens with our riding gloves on. It rarely works. Nanotips was created to solve that problem. To find out whether they succeeded, be sure to read Vince’s article, a detailed, objective review of the product’s performance. Gene Southard tested the TCX Adventure / Infinity EVO boots during his two-month motorcycle tour of Thailand this past winter. Adventure boots have unique requirements compared to other types of motorcycle boots. Gene gave the test boots a thorough test and offers his review for you this month. The Motorcycle Lawyer, Jason Waechter, reviews the impact female riders are having on motorcycling and makes the case for establishing July as Female Motorcyclists Month. As the number of female riders increases, he makes a compelling case for recognizing that segment of riders. We agree. For more detail, be sure to read Jason’s column this month. Attorney Dondi Vesprini reviews a newly proposed amendment to the Michigan Constitution that would make it more difficult for law enforcement to search or seize electronic devices like smart phones, tablets, laptops, desk top computers, etc. and require a warrant from the court to do so. If you’ve read Dondi’s past columns, you know that he
CORRECTION Our 2016 Street Glide review in the June 2016 issue contained several errors. The motorcycle we tested was actually the Street Glide Special instead of the basic Street Glide. A variety of features included on the Special that are standard equipment are options on the basic Street Glide. For example, ABS is part of the included features on the Special. The Special offers other standard features available as options on the basic Street Glide. One other error in the article is that we reported the Street Glide as having single disc brakes up front when it actually comes equipped with dual Brembo disc brakes. I could try to explain how we came up with this absurdity but the bottom line is that I screwed up. Base MSRP for the Street Glide Special is $23,199. We sincerely apologize for this error and any incovenience it might have caused.
is highly analytical and offers concise interpretations of law. This month’s column is no different. If you care about your privacy, this column is for you. Columnist Franz Hoffer, always looking for ways to improve his riding skills, interviews his son, Eric, about the rider training programs he’s taken through Midwest Police Motorcycle Training, a business created by two former motor officers. The training is rigorous and demands a serious commitment. Check out Franz’s column to learn more about the training Midwest provides and what Eric thinks of the training he received. Included in this issue are news items and an extensive list of upcoming events. Thank you for reading. We appreciate your interest in our publication and hope you find value in these pages. The BMW S 1000 RR. 2016 Isle of Man Champion.
2016 S 1000 RR $15,695 (including ABS)
The RR is the epitome of a superbike - and that applies to its design, too. Now in its third generation, you can instantly see its increased power. The profile is razor-sharp and extremely clear, the volume of the contours and shapes perfectly balanced. From the rear to the front section, every trim component has been redesigned - including the headlamp element, where the symmetry has been given greater emphasis. The new S 1000 RR has an output of 199 hp - 6 hp more than its predecessor. But it is not just its higher rated output that makes the Double R faster and more agile. Weighing in at 450 lbs incl. ABS and traction control, it is some 8.8 lbs lighter than the previous version. Furthermore, it has a newly designed exhaust system as well as a new engine set-up for increased torque, an improved output curve and many other optimized details. Well-equipped at an MSRP of $15,695 plus tax, title and all other local charges.

Nanotips – Brush-on liquid said to make any glove touchscreen compatible. By Vincent Cardinale
Ever notice that you can’t operate your smartphone or tablet touchscreen while wearing riding gloves? One possible solution: Nanotips. According to nanotips.com/faq “Nanotips is a conductive liquid polyamide solution that will transform your favorite pair of gloves into touchscreen gloves. Formulated using nanotechnology, Nanotips mimics the touch of human skin.” So, does it work? I applied Nanotips solution to four different riding gloves per directions and then tested on an Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Tab 3. Gloves • • • •

Taichi Drymaster Rain Gloves for the:
Dianese Scout Evo GTX Winter Gloves: These are thick fingered winter gloves. Initial Nanotips application yielded mixed results. Using the flat glove surface over the left index finger’s fingerprint area, the screen was responsive, however fine control was not possible on either device. Per Nanotips included instructions, a subsequent Nanotips application over a larger surface area of the left index finger area resulted in the very tip of the glove activating both touchscreens with sufficient fine control to effectively operate apps on both devices.
iPhone 5: Initial Nanotips application yielded mixed results. Fingertip operation was successful about 25% of the time. The area of the glove over the fingerprint area was successful about 50% of the time, for touch and sweep motions. Subsequent Nanotips application over a larger area rendered this glove operable about 80% of the time for touch and sweep operations. Fine control was satisfactory.
Held Keprotec Vented Summer Gloves: A single Nanotips application rendered this glove touchscreen compatible on both devices. Both gross and fine operations were possible. Icon Patrol: This is a thickly padded glove with a slightly concave fingertip. Initial Nanotips application yielded unsatisfactory results, as the glove basically would not operate either device without multiple attempts. Only sweeping motions were marginally effective, with no fine control possible. Subsequent application rendered only slightly better results. Only the inside flat surface along side the fingertip would operate either device with any consistency, either as a touch or sweep motion. No real fine control possible.
Samsung Tab 3: This device was much more usable with these gloves upon initial Nanotips application. Gross and fine touch and sweep control was satisfactory. Subsequent Nanotips application did not render significantly different results. Conclusion: Does it work? Yes, but with some caveats. As is often the case, mileage may vary. At $14.95 retail on the nanotips.com website, it may be worth a try. The 8 ml bottle is said to coat about 25-30 fingertips. The product appears to be more effective and usable on thinner vs. thicker gloves. Don’t expect this to work as well as your fingertip. Device touchscreen sensitivity may be a factor. Note that this is not a permanent solution; periodic reapplication will be required. Overall Rating:

TCX Adventure/Infinity Evo Boots by Gene Southard
“Never take a new pair of shoes on vacation.” Well, I broke the first rule of vacation by taking a pair of new boots on my latest trip to Thailand. Because adventure boots are used not only for riding but also for walking, it is important that they not only give good protection but are comfortable to walk in. When TCX offered me a pair of their Adventure/Infinity Evo boots to test on the trip, I was afraid that I would regret taking them without first breaking them in. After treating the boots a couple of times with silicone, I packed them in my gear bag and was off. Fortunately, these boots required absolutely no break in. They were comfortable from the very first step. The TCX Adventure boot is 100% leather with no plastic inserts. They have a large top flap that wraps around the calf with hook and loop attachment, with the lower attachments by two adjustable metal clasps. The clasps are replaceable with a screwdriver. The soles are made from the same rubber that is used to make Michelin Annakee tires. I am
sure it is no coincidence that the Annakee is also being marketed to the adventure rider. The soles have a small step to the heel to keep your foot from slipping off the peg. I did notice that the heel is slightly taller than my regular Italian adventure boots. Suede leather covers any part of the boot that would contact the motorcycle. A large rubber shift pad prevents damage to the boot from the shift lever. Why do boot manufacturers Join us for a presentation still put shift pads on the right boot? How long has it been since a motorcycle has been built with a right side shift lever? Maybe they are going after the vintage market. A label on the flap informs you that the interior is constructed of Gore-Tex; it was comfortable in the Thai heat. At the very top of the

interior, there is a four-inch tall foam-rubber pad to keep dirt and water from entering the top of the boot. The gaiter extends up to the bottom of this seal and is made of soft leather. Although we did not do any water crossings while using these boots, they look watertight unlike some adventure boots I have worn. There is generous padding thoughout the boot for protection in case of a crash. I have heard that foot injuries are more common than head injuries while riding. The two reflective strips on the back will make you more visible while riding at night. Since returning from vacation my other pair of boots have not been out of the closet. If adventure boots are on your shopping list, you should look at the TCX boot.

STREAMLINERS: The Story of MOTORCYCLE LAND SPEED RECORD COMPETITION A Call for Motorcycles for this New Exhibition The great Vincent tuner Rollie Free taught us that in Land Speed Record runs, streamlining is of the utmost importance even if that means simply “tucking in” one’s head, torso, arms and legs. Land Speed Record competition is focused on top speed. Eclipsing Rollie’s roughly 150mph run in 1948, unlimited class big guns are now knocking on the 400mph door. But watching the 50cc machines can be almost as exciting. To help you learn the history of Land Speed Record competition, the technology involved, what it is like to squeeze into a land speed record motorcycle and hurtle down the salt at 200, 300 or more miles per hour, the National Motorcycle Museum is in the research and planning phase for a new exhibit entitled Allstate Motorcycle STREAMLINERS presented by J&P Cycles. The exhibit is set to open June 4, 2016. The machines pictured are among many
already committed for display, but the Museum is looking for additional LSR bikes, riding gear, film
footage, models, photos, fine art, stories from tuners and riders and land speed record parts like engines, wheels, frames and more to help tell this exciting story. These items would be on loan for the exhibit, returned afterward. Bikes recently confirmed for the show include Salt Ghost from Lowbrow Customs, the Rick Vesco Yamaha twin XS650 powered streamliner, Tina, a Vincent single from the Big Sid and Matthew Biberman collection, the World’s Fastest Bagger from Klock Werks Kustom Cycles, the J&P Cycles Streamliner, the Bakker Motorsports Hyabusa sidecar rig, an un-faired pre-unit supercharged Triumph, plus interesting Howard Allen Knuckle and Panhead Harleys. A machine powered by a pre-War Plymouth flathead six-cylinder engine, Monster, and Tramp III from the S&S Cycle Museum are also expected to be part of the exhibit. And there are more land speed record bikes coming on line. The STREAMLINERS exhibit will be curated by John Stein, expert on straight line motorcycle competition and author of two books; WORLD’S FASTEST MOTORCYCLE and MOTORCYCLE DRAG RACING; A HISTORY. If you have Land Speed Record bikes, items to loan or a story to tell you can be included in this one year exhibit running from June 2016 to May 2017. Please contact us at mmederski@nationalmcmuseum.org, or call 614-551-0960.

We arrived on the island in the early afternoon of Saturday, June 4, after the Superbike TT had run. I had hoped to get us press passes for better access to cover the race but, after reviewing the requirement for a $2 million insurance policy per media person, that idea was shelved. We would attend as spectators. The Sidecar TT1 race was scheduled for later in the afternoon. After an enthusiastic welcome and brief visit with Martin and Jane, we boarded the trolley in Laxey that took us up to Bungalow, a prime viewing spot at a high speed section of the TT course near the summit of Snaefell Mountain. Despite the gray skies, a crowd gathered on both sides of the road to watch the first of two sidecar TTs held during race week. We arrived just in time. Within 10 minutes of arriving on the mountain, we could hear a helicopter approaching. (Helicopters track the leaders in all of the TT races.) Seconds later, the screaming engine of an approaching sidecar racer could be heard. Up the mountain, we could see the the blur of that sidecar racing down the mountain.

TT Tourists: Our visit to the Isle of Man was part of a longer vacation in England. Our friends, Ann and John, had invited Heidi and me to visit them. As we considered dates for a visit, the question of whether we might include a trip to the Isle of Man for the TT while we were in England was raised. John, who is a motorsports fan, not only thought the idea was a good one, he mentioned that we might be able to stay with his nephew, Martin, and his wife, Jane, while there. Not long after that conversation, the plan was set.

James Hilliard races through the corner at Quarterbridge on his way to a thirdplace podium finish in the Supersport TT1 race. Photo by Heidi Heckler. We were overlooking a short sweeper near the bottom of a dip in the road before it started up the next hill. The racers would ease off the gas as they entered the curve and roll it on just as quickly as they passed through the dip. The leaders were visibly faster than those that followed but none of the racers were slow. After slashing through our line of sight, the machines were gone within seconds. Another sidecar hustled through that section moments later. It didn’t take long to realize that spectators had a short window in which to view a race run over a 37.73 mile course. Lots could happen on the course between our look at the leaders every 17 to 20 minutes as they passed. Loud speakers broadcasting race coverage from Manx Radio helped us keep track of the racing action but, as the racers charged past, we couldn’t hear the announcer. We noticed that many fans had come prepared with portable radios – sometimes with ear buds or earphones – to better monitor the action. Lesson learned. Unlike other events where giant screens broadcast the racing action throughout the course, the Isle of Man course is too long and spread out for adequate, consistent television coverage. While it’s likely some company will solve this problem, a portable radio is the best alternative in the meantime. The race was shortened to three laps after Dwight Beare crashed. The course was closed for the rest afternoon and the Supersport/Lightweight/

The Truth About Female Motorcyclists by Jason Waechter, Esq. Everyone knows May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, but did you know that July is Women’s Motorcycle Month? If you didn’t, that’s ok… Harley-Davidson may not have known either! Back in 2008, several organizations including the Motorcycle Hall of Fame got together and declared that July should be Women’s Motorcycle Month, a time to celebrate female motorcyclists and help promote motorcycle awareness among motor vehicle drivers. Events were planned around the world to recognize female riders, but ultimately the movement didn’t gain as much traction as organizers had hoped. The following year, Harley-Davidson declared May to be Women Riders Month, and staged female-focused events to celebrate women motorcyclists and promote the sport to non-riding women everywhere. My team and I believe that anything that promotes motorcycle awareness to drivers is a good thing, and my regular readers will know that we are always looking for ways to give back to the biker community, help injured motorcyclists, and promote motorcycle awareness. With that in mind, this month’s article is dedicated to shedding light on the truth about women motorcyclists, and why we think they deserve to have their own month of celebration and recognition… in July! FALSE: There are not that many female motorcyclists out there; most women prefer riding on the back of the bike. TRUE: The latest Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) owner’s survey found that about 14% of motorcycle owners are women, and about 25% of motorcycle riders are women. Interestingly, the fastest growing group of female riders is also the youngest: Among motorcycle owners aged 18-35, about 18% are women. Among owners aged 36-50, about 17% are women. And, among owners aged 51+, only about 9% are women. Overall, motorcycle ownership among women has almost doubled since 1998. FALSE: Women prefer sport bikes over cruisers. TRUE: In fact, only 10% of the women surveyed by the MIC rode sport bikes; the rest had cruisers. Additionally, more women buy new bikes (57%) instead of used (43%). There is probably a good reason for this: Manufacturers are finally beginning to recognize the increase in female riders, and have started designing motorcycles with women in mind. FALSE: Women are safer motorcyclists than men. TRUE: There is no way to prove that women riders are “safer” than their male counterparts. However, female motorcyclists do seem to be more safetyconscious, as the MIC survey found that in some states, more than one-third of registered students in motorcycle safety training courses were women. TM
Midwest Motorcyclist
The survey also found that at least 60% of women riders had taken a certified motorcycle training course, where only about 42% of male riders had taken the course. In addition to taking a safety class, female motorcyclists are also more likely to wear a crash helmet while riding, according to an observational study by Wayne State University in 2013, one year after the universal helmet law was repealed in Michigan. About 60% of women motorcyclists observed in the Wayne State study wore crash helmets, compared to 55% of male riders. FALSE: Women motorcyclists are less likely to be injured or killed in a crash because they are safer riders. TRUE: Women motorcyclists are less likely to be injured or killed in a crash because there are fewer of them on the road. It is true: in general, male motorcyclists are injured or killed in crashes more often than female motorcyclists, according to a 2014 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In fact, 92% of motorcycle drivers killed in crashes that year were male, and 8% were female. That said, 93% of motorcycle passengers killed in 2014 crashes were female, while 7% were male. FALSE: There is no international recognition of women motorcyclists. TRUE: On the first Saturday in May, women around the world took part in the tenth annual International Female Ride Day (IFRD). Female riders from Canada, the United States, Australia, the Caribbean, India, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and many others took part in a variety of rides and motorcycling events. The goal of IFRD is to bring female motorcyclists together to celebrate the sport and to act as role models for both riders and non-riders alike. Vicki Gray, creator of Motoress.com, is the founder of IFRD. We sent Debbie Parinello, our Marketing Director, to an IFRD event in Michigan; see photos at Facebook.com/TheMotorcycleLawyer or MotorcycleLawyerMichigan.com FALSE: Women and men have different reasons for riding motorcycles. TRUE: About 53% of women surveyed in a Kelton study commissioned by HarleyDavidson said riding a motorcycle is a “key source” of their overall happiness. In fact, nearly three-quarters of women asked by Kelton think their lives have noticeably improved since they started riding a motorcycle. About 49% of female motorcyclists are married, according to the MIC study, and the Kelton study found that 50% of women motorcyclists surveyed rated themselves
“extremely happy” with their relationships. To summarize the findings of these studies and others: women ride motorcycles because they love it. What better reason could there be? Now you know the truth: Female motorcyclists are out there in growing numbers, riding because they love to ride. The more motorcyclists on the road, the more vehicle drivers will have to start paying attention and really watching for bikers. So, this July, let’s celebrate the female motorcyclists in our lives! Get on social media and remind drivers that July is Women’s Motorcycle Month, and while you’re at it, remind everyone to be motorcycle-aware and watch out for female (and male!) motorcyclists this season. If you participated in a women’s motorcycle event this July, or even back in May, we want to hear about it. Send your story to reception@lawyerforlife.com, or share it with us at Facebook.com/TheMotorcycleLawyer. While you’re there, take a minute to share some of our motorcycle awareness pictures and posters, to help spread the word that motorcycles are everywhere. We’re also looking for YOUR photos! out be an excellent spot for watching and picture taking. It offered a variety of angles and looks at the track through the Braddan Bridge section plus shade for escaping the ever-hotter sun. The Superstock race was a rematch of the Superbike race between race winner Michael Dunlop and runner-up Ian Hutchinson. Hutchinson would win the Superstock race after Dunlop retired with a broken shifter lever. As with Supersport TT1 race, Harrison finished second followed by Hilliard in third. We opted to skip the Lightweight/TTZero qualifying in favor of a BBQ at Martin and Jane’s later in the day. We flew back to England the next morning.
(the first of two Supersport races during the week) going off at 10:45 a.m. followed by the Sidecar TT2 qualifying. The Superstock race was the third event of the day. Lighweight/TTZero qualifying were scheduled for later. We elected to start the day at Quarterbridge, a short distance from the start finish line and then move to another viewing location after the Supersport race. Quarterbridge features a downhill into a sharp turn to the right near the bottom. The pub located at the outside of the curve was jammed with spectators by the time we arrived. We set up a short distance away from the curve and then across the side street where there was more shade and a different angle on the action. Rather than a mass start, the TT is a time trial. Racers leave the starting line at 10-second intervals. The good thing about this arrangement is that, at least on the first lap, we knew the order in which the racers would come down the hill. John McGuinness started first and came through first. We could hear his bike well before we saw him. McGuinness didn’t have a great week, finding his best finishes of the week, a third place in both the Superbike and Senior TTs, on the first and last days. Ian Hutchinson won the Supersport TT1 race, followed by Michael Dunlop, and then Dean Harrison (who started 12th.) Dunlop was disqualified from the race after a tech inspection revealed he had illegal cams in his bike. Race officials called the cams an unintentional advantage since the engine was built for Dunlop by a company not under his control. Harrison moved up to second and James Hilliard took over the third place on the podium. We moved down the road to Braddan Bridge in time to see the last half of Sidecar TT2 qualifying and all of the Superstock race. Braddan Bridge begins with a left-hand turn onto a downhill section with a dip at the bottom before curving right to an uphill section. There were three viewing areas on the outside of the curve: two of the viewing areas cost £8 per person and the other was an ancient church surrounded by an equally old cemetery that was free except for a voluntary donation. We went with free for a donation. The church cemetary turned
Attendance: It’s difficult to determine the TT attendance numbers with any accuracy. The Isle of Man ferry service reported that it carried 13,228 motorcycles and 35,500 people to the Isle of Man for the 2016 races. That’s a 6% decline from 2015 that the ferry company says is due to the unavailability of one of the high-speed ferries . We flew to the island from Birmingham, England and our plane was packed with motorcycle people (based on their apparel and overheard conversations.) Considering the many flights flying to the island from various airports in the United Kingdom and Europe, it’s not unreasonable to estimate that the 88,000 person population increased by another 42,000 to 47,000 people during race week. In addition to the racing, it’s a great party. Suggestions if you’re going to the Isle of Man TT • Plan your visit in advance including accommodations • Take a radio to tune in the race in progress plus race summaries and interviews • Plan viewing spots in advance • Arrive early to get best viewing • Visit the Grandstand / Pit area • Hang out where other motorcyclists hang out. It’s a gathering of global motorcycle enthusiasts and racing fans.. • Take time to explore the island

Proposed Amendment to MI Constitution re: protection from unreasonable searches of electronic data by Dondi Vesprini While I am a trial attorney representing motorcyclists who have been injured in an accident or have had their civil rights violated, I also spend time advocating for the rights of motorcyclists with the legislators in Lansing. Thus, I try to draw attention to various legislative items that come along from time to time that I believe could have a significant effect on motorcyclists. One such item of recent note is a proposed amendment to our State Constitution. On June 2, 2016, the House passed a Joint Resolution to place before voters in the next general election an amendment to Section 11 of Article I of our Michigan Constitution to add a requirement that government must obtain a warrant to access a person’s electronic data and electronic communication. The Joint Resolution passed by a vote of 107 to 1 in the House. Section 11 of Article I of the Michigan Constitution provides protection from the government against unreasonable searches and seizures. It currently states “The person, houses, papers and possessions of every person shall be secure from unreasonable searches and seizures. No warrant to search any place or to seize any person or things shall issue without describing them, or without probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation.” This is essentially Michigan’s constitutional version of the 4th Amendment of the United States Constitution. The proposed amendment would specifically
add “electronic data and electronic communications” to the list of categories which would be secure form unreasonable searches and seizures and for which a proper warrant would be required. Per the Legislative Analysis prepared by nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency, arguments in support of the amendment include that Federal law has not kept up with advances in technology and the amendment would protect persons from searches of electronic data wherever and on whatever it is stored (ie, cell phone, computer, tablet, iPod, the cloud) without having to wait for the U.S. Supreme Court to apply the 4th Amendment to these types of searches. Arguments in opposition include that it would make it more difficult for Michigan law enforcement to investigate cybercrimes and enforce cybercrime laws such as internet child pornography rings. The Michigan State Police and Michigan Sheriff’s Association has indicated opposition to the resolution. To become part of the constitution, the resolution requires a two-thirds vote in each house of the legislature and approval by the voters at the next general election. A general election is an election held in November of an even-numbered year. It will prove to be a very interesting issue to decide as it is not often that amendments to the
Michigan Constitution are up for decision, let alone one that would seem to have such wide reaching effects in our day and age of technology. As always, if anyone has any questions or if I can be of legal assistance to you or anyone you know who has been injured in a motorcycle accident, please don’t hesitate to contact me as I deal with these types of claims on a daily basis on behalf of injured motorcyclists statewide. Further, for those readers who are members of any motorcycle organizations, clubs or groups, if you would like to have me come out to your group to speak or give a presentation on the legal rights of an injured motorcyclist or on any specific topic that your group may be curious about, please don’t hesitate to give me a call at (248-5694646) or shoot me an e-mail at Dondi@buckfirelaw.com. I give presentations statewide and there is never a charge associated with having me out. I enjoy having the opportunity to come out and meet motorcycle enthusiasts from all parts of our State!
Dondi is a licensed attorney in the state of Michigan and is recognized as an expert in cases involving motorcycle accidents. He has obtained millions of dollars in recovery for injured motorcyclists over the course of his career as a trial attorney. Dondi’s representation of motorcyclists extends beyond the court room. He is a member of the Board of Directors of ABATE of Michigan and meets frequently with both legislators and lobbyists regarding legislation affecting injured motorcyclists and the rights of motorcyclists to ride free.

The Preacher Speaks About...
Midwest Motorcycle Training by Franz “The Preacher” Hoffer
Last year, I, along with my son, Eric, son-in-law, Tony, and cousin, Frank, took a motorcycle riding/handling course from Gary Lewandowski and his Ride Like A Pro program. It was tough, humbling, and well worth the time, effort, and money. With a lot of practice, the techniques taught by Gary have made me a better rider. My son, Eric, has taken the next step in the process and enrolled and completed two classes from Midwest Police Motorcycle Training, Inc., run by Doug Wolfe, a retired Police Sergeant with 29 years’ experience. Doug has quite a resume. He founded the Royal Oak Michigan Police Motorcycle Unit and commanded the unit until his retirement. Doug has competed in the Midwest and Canadian Police Motor competitions. He has trained more than half of the police motor officers in Michigan as well as officers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Wyoming, Florida, New York, Alaska and the FBI Police. Midwest Police Motorcycle Training was established in 2008 to provide the highest quality motorcycle training for police and civilian riders worldwide. Doug’s co-instructor, Larry Schultz, also a retired Police Officer with 28 years’ experience, has been a Motor Officer since 2001 and an Instructor since 2004. Larry founded the Troy, Michigan Police Department Motor Unit in 2001. Larry has assisted in developing the curriculum for Midwest Police Motorcycle Training courses. Larry has also competed in Police Motorcycle Competitions across the Midwest and Canada. I have watched several demonstrations organized by Midwest and have been impressed with what I’ve witnessed. I decided to interview my son, Eric, who has completed two Midwest courses, to get a firsthand account of what they are like and what they put you through. The Preacher (TP): Hi, Eric. It feels kind of funny interviewing my son about riding seeing as how I was the one that got you interested in riding, provided you with basic training, took you on your first long ride to Sturgis, watched out for you, raised you... Sorry, had to throw all that in. What classes have you taken from Midwest? Eric Kausch (EK): No problem, Pop. I have taken Midwest’s Primary course which runs four days from 8am-4pm, and the Advanced 1 course which runs for five days, a format similar to the Primary course, time-wise. TP: How did you hear about Midwest? TM
Midwest Motorcyclist
EK: I first heard about them through Pat Armitage. [Editor’s note: Pat is a long-time columnist for this publication and has also been published in national magazines.] You shared an article that Pat wrote several years ago about the Michigan State University (MSU) course and his Goldwing. Doug Wolfe was the instructor at MSU when they had their motor officer training up there. Pat said I would enjoy it after taking Gary Lewandowski’s RLAP class. I found out from Tony (brotherin-law) that there was a group that was doing training next to his workplace on a motorcycle range. I stopped by the range one day and spoke with Doug. There was a person riding some patterns as we talked. I was hooked! TP: Can you describe the classes briefly? Did they meet or exceed your expectations? EK: The classes are phenomenal. The first four hours is all classroom work and consists of discussions, tests, scenarios, nomenclature, riding posture, and much more. The remaining time is divided into two different categories, slow speed and road speed. The slow speed exercises are those that you’d see at a motorcycle rodeo with hundreds of cones, precision riding, and advanced lock and lean techniques that would allow one to properly execute a U-turn and 90-degree pull outs, among others. The other time is spent at road speed (depending on the level of class, anywhere from 30-40 mph for the test. Yes, there’s a test!). The road speed exercises are those that could save your life on the road. You get exercises in maximumthreshold braking, evasive maneuvers, and escaping a potentially dangerous situation. Midwest teaches you proper braking and simulates a car stopped in front of you or one getting close to rear ending you. The classes have dramatically changed the way I ride; much safer, more confident, and more aware of defensive riding techniques. TP: Did you use their bikes for the class or your own? EK: First off, when you say “bikes” Doug and Larry will ask you if it’s a Schwinn, a Trek, or a Huffy. They don’t ride bikes. They ride motors, police motors. Doug and Larry are retired Motor Officers and are very proud of riding Police Motors throughout their careers. Bike Cops wear the funny looking helmets and short shorts. This class is not that! HAHA. Now to answer the question; YES, I rented their motors! Definitely worth the price and peace of mind knowing that if and when you drop their motors in an

Continued from previous page - The Preacher exercise or two, you won’t be damaging your precious chrome. Also, their clutch adjustments, seats, bars, and ABS are advantageous to the maneuvers taught. TP: What was the most important thing you learned from the classes?
EK: The most important thing I learned was how to ride properly, safely, and with a great awareness. This comes after having logging close to 75,000 miles on two wheels. These classes have completely changed the way I ride and broke many of my bad habits. We all have them! TP: Are you planning to take any other classes? EK: I am planning to take their Advanced Level 2 class at some point. Unfortunately, the class scheduled for this year is in August and I report back to work on August 1st. Hopefully, next summer works out better for my schedule or I can alter it with my boss! I am scheduled to participate in their Midwest Police Motorcycle Training Challenge and Safety Seminar July 22-24th at Wolverine Harley-Davidson. TP: Would you recommend the classes to all riders or only certain ones? EK: All riders can learn and benefit from these classes. If you ride on two wheels, with one in front of the other, and are passionate about staying alive, I would encourage you to take this class. Besides; those cones are not going to knock themselves down!!!! Thanks, Eric. For a full schedule of classes and fee schedule, visit Midwest’s web site at http:// www.midwestmotorcycletraining.com/articles.html. I plan on taking the Primary Class next year and will use my son as a private tutor beforehand so I’m not embarrassed! Until next time, RIDE SAFE, my friends!
