Back in the present, this issue offers up reviews of two American-made heavyweight cruisers: a new model in the 2016 Indian Springfield and a model with slightly longer history, the 2016 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. It’s unusual that we would have tests of two similar motorcycles in a single issue but when the opportunity to ride a new motorcycle knocks, we go for a ride. Both are excellent motorcycles that will likely appeal to riders with different priorities. Check out our reviews for our assessment of each. Patrick Armitage returns with his suggestion for a destination ride. You know the old saying: Live to ride, ride to eat. Or something like that. 2016 Indian Springfield: Giant Killer? By Ray Peabody With the launch of the Indian Springfield, Indian Motorcycles has taken one more step in its effort to claw away part of HarleyDavidson’s almost 50% share of the U.S. motorcycle market. Based on performance and appearance, the Springfield seems to be targeting the market for what has been one of Harley-Davidson’s most successful models, the Road King. This is a tough niche to crack but Indian (and parent company, Polaris) has already demonstrated its ability to gain acceptance in the American-made heavyweight cruiser / touring market with its Chieftain and Roadmaster models. Based on our previous tests of various Indian models, the company’s early success is no surprise. The Springfield is named after the town in Massachusetts in which the Hendee Manufacturing

Company - which became The Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company in 1928 - began building Indian Motorcycles in 1901. They continued manufacturing operations in Springfield until 1953 when the original company went bankrupt. Weather on the day of the test was less than ideal with rain threatening and temperatures hovering in the low 50s. The folks at MotorCity Motorcycles had their Springfield demo prepped and ready to ride. Sales Manager (and longtime friend of this publication) Jeff Bottrell reviewed the Springfield’s controls and operation including the electronic key fob that allows keyless starting and remote locking of the hard bags. My first impression was that the seating position and low 26-inch saddle height were comfortable (despite my 34" inseam). The saddle had a raised pad at the rear which, for me, helped keep me from slouching. The forward-mounted floorboards allow for a comfortable bend at the knee. (Having ridden several cruisers/touring bikes with floorboards, I appreciate the comfort and foot-position flexibility they offer.) The large, quickly detachable windscreen seems far forward of the rider but the handlebars stretch back for a comfortable reach.

My planned route would take me west past Orchard Lake along Sleeth Road to Milford with the return route following Commerce Road. I like this route because it offers roads curving through the countryside and around lakes as well as an abundance of hills. There are even a few remote straights for some speed runs. The first part of the route was quite busy with stop-and-go traffic and lots of lights. That environment was perfect for getting a sense of the weight and balance of this 852 pound (wet) cruiser. I noticed the weight when pulling the Springfield up off the side stand. However, once upright, the bike feels well balanced whether stopped or in motion. Out away from congested traffic, I found space to try out the engine. With 119 foot pounds of torque, the Springfield accelerates hard from a dead stop up through the gears. The first two gears are rather short. Third is long, running from slower speeds and rpms up through 60 mph. I spent a lot of time in third gear. Once I hit fourth, and then fifth, I was well beyond the legal speed limit and had to

Day Ride Destination: The Turkey Roost Restaurant by Patrick Armitage

Many of our readers live in Southeast Michigan, the area in which I have lived all of my life. Every state has a popular area where many residents go for recreation. In Michigan, it is the general area we refer to as “Up North.” For most of us, it is nearly anywhere north of US-10 as it runs from Bay City through Midland to Clare and Baldwin. The usual route we take to access the area is I-75. If you, like me, have ridden this route, you may have missed a hidden gem just off the freeway, north of Bay City. I had passed this location many times before a good friend insisted we take the first exit (M-13) north of Bay City. Just a few miles up M-13, you will find a pink building on the east sideof the road in Kawkawlin, Michigan, called “The Turkey Roost.” The Turkey Roost Restaurant was first opened by Clayton Kitchen in 1955 when M-13 was the main north/south route on the east side of the State. The pink paint was chosen because it was thought that people might forget the name but would certainly remember the building was pink. Clayton decided that specializing in turkey dinners would simplify the operation, lower costs, and keep quality high. The second owners, Ron Craven and

The rubber base does a good job of holding the bag in place, but I did find that the quick disconnects were too small and could not be released while wearing my gloves. The front quick disconnects were under the bag so far that the bag needed to be lifted to gain access. At first, I was afraid that the separate GPS mate that magnetically attaches to the lid would restrict the view of the map pocket but I found that, by lifting the back of the mount, the map could easily be read. The mount has three compartments for electrical devices or glasses. I carried my phone with a GPS app in one because the Thai maps were not always correct. The mount comes in either magnetic or strap mounting. The Nelson-Rigg bag worked very well and would be an excellent investment. The suggested retail on the Cl-2015 tank bag is $109.95. On the CL-GPS Mount, the suggested price is $39.95.

THE LITAS ARE QUICKLY BECOMING THE WORLD’S LARGEST FEMALE MOTORCYCLE GROUP The social norm of a woman riding on the back of a dude’s bike is changing fast, and The Litas might just have everything to do with it. Salt Lake City, Utah - The Litas are the latest female motorcycle group to be revving their engines and making noise in the moto community. This all-women motorcycle group, conceived only six months ago by founder Jessica Haggett, has already expanded to 12 countries and 62 cities. The Litas give women an incredible worldwide network of support, empowering them both on and off their bikes. The Litas currently have more than 1,100 members and are showing no sign of slowing down. Curitiba, Brazil; Melbourne, Australia; Montreal, Canada; Paris, France; and Hawkes Bay, New Zealand are just a few of the most recent International Litas Branches. The group’s tag line, “Raise Hell, Babes,” is what they stand for: raising hell by breaking social norms and creating a new culture of riders who stand for something bigger than themselves. Additionally, The Litas are all-inclusive. Unlike many motorcycle groups, any woman, on any type of bike is encouraged to ride along and call herself a ‘Lita.’ “I want to change tradition and create something new and uplifting for women riders to be part of,” says Haggett,

Another Record Setting Charity Fashion Show for BMW SEM Plymouth, Michigan – BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan (BMW SEM) recently announced that their annual Charity Fashion Show attracted 85 attendees and a little less than $4,000 in donations for the Michigan State Trooper Chad Wolf Memorial Fund. Both the attendance and donations are records for the event. For those not familiar with Wolf’s story, he was a motorcycle patrol trooper killed when a car towing a trailer driven by a Waterford man abruptly changed lanes and hit Wolf. Trooper Wolf was trapped underneath the trailer and dragged for several miles. The Fashion Show highlights motorcycle apparel from companies such as BMW, Klim, Rev’It and Schuberth worn by the employees and customers of the dealership. For a $25 donation, attendees enjoy gourmet food, refreshments, and the fashion show as well as the company of likeminded motorcycle enthusiasts. One first-time female attendee was heard to say, “I didn’t know there so much attractive motorcycle apparel available.”

Exclusive Test

2016 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Smooth, Cool, & Fast by Ray Peabody It’s not difficult to understand why so many people – nearly 50% of the motorcycle market – love Harley-Davidson motorcycles. While the basic v-twin configuration has remained consistent since the company built its first motorcycle in a shed in the early days of the last century, technology such as fuel injection and computerized information systems have been incorporated to make these motorcycles both classic and contemporary.

I have understood the appeal since I bought my 1984 Low Rider back in 1995. It was the last of the Shovelhead-powered Harleys. Long and low,

the Low Rider carried me all over the State. It wasn’t perfect but it was fun. The community was equally fun, friendly, and sometimes wild. It is this background experience that makes every Harley test ride an event I take on with eager anticipation. The day I traveled up to Sandy’s Harley-Davidson was perfect with bright sunshine and warm temperatures. Rick Corley, who with his wife, Karen, owns Sandy’s, offered the Street Glide for this test. He was busy finalizing a deal when I arrived so Salesman Phil Hunt helped get me situated. Mr. Hunt reviewed the operation of the Glide with me before I rolled out of the driveway. While most of the switches and gauges are easily understandable, the Boom Box infotainment system has much more functionality than can be learned (at least by me) in a five minute review. The system offers 15 FM and five AM radio stations, a weather band, and a USB port to connect your smartphone and listen to streaming music stations. Missing is the previously available CD player. Riders can operate their music, phone or GPS through voice commands. In addition to providing directional assistance, the GPS system advises the rider when fuel is low and directs him or her to the nearest gas station. In addition to voice commands, the system can be managed through the 6.5 inch, color touch screen in the middle of the dash or by controls located on the inside of the left hand grip. I nodded and smiled as Phil summarized the Boom Box operation,

knowing that there was so much to learn that I wouldn’t be trying to manage it while out on the road. It would be too much of a distraction. This system requires dedicated time with the user manual in order to get the most value from its operation. The dashboard running horizontally just below the edge of the windscreen holds four large, easily readable fuel level, speedometer, tachometer, and voltmeter analog-style gauges. The layout of the gauges and touch screen allows the rider to check the status of a variety of systems with a brief glance. Because it was a sunny, warm Friday afternoon, the dealership parking lot and showroom was busy. I decided to get away from all the traffic and headed north on M-120. I didn’t know where I was going but believed the GPS would take me to some smooth, curvy roads. That faith did not go unrewarded. After turning left where 120 came to a “T”, I traveled over one especially rough section of road mottled with broken and patched asphalt before finding a smoother surface. The roads eventually took me further north and west through a series of 90 degree

Stretching Motorcycle Awareness Month for the Entire Riding Season by Jason Waechter, Esq. Summer has arrived in the Midwest and Motorcycle Awareness Month is already over. For those readers who took up the cause and participated in Motorcycle Awareness events last month: Thank you! You may have helped save a life. As always, my team and I were busy throughout the month of May, participating in various awareness activities and handing out swag to help you remind drivers to be Motorcycle Aware. Every year, my team and I try to come up with ways to stretch Motorcycle Awareness Month across the entire riding season in order to keep the momentum going. The hope is that the more we talk about and promote motorcycle awareness and safety, the more likely drivers are to finally get the message and watch for motorcycles. Here are a few ways you can add motorcycle awareness to your other summer activities. DO get your kids involved. Encourage them to play Count the Motorcycles while you’re in the car. Get a notebook or have them create a motorcyclecount chart that they can bring to show-and-tell in September. Hopefully, kids who have grown up specifically looking for motorcycles on the roads will be more likely to be Motorcycle Aware when they start driving. DON’T talk the talk if you don’t walk the walk. Be Motorcycle Aware when you’re driving your vehicle. You’re not too old to play Count the Motorcycles… DO use social media to spread the word. We talk about the power of social media all the time, yet I see very few posts encouraging motorcycle awareness after the month of May. Try creating a simple “Watch for Motorcycles” post, then share and re-share it every week with your followers. If you need ideas for motorcycle awareness posts, follow my account (Facebook.com/TheMotorcycleLawyer). DO encourage awareness with swag. A quick web search will reveal dozens of websites where you can create inexpensive custom t-shirts, mugs, and stickers that you can share with family and friends. Many sites also offer a fundraising option; design a cool motorcycle awareness t-shirt, sell the shirts online to other riders, and donate the money to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or your local ABATE chapter (or use it to create even more swag!). If you or your children play in a sports league, why not add a motorcycle awareness message to the team shirts? DON’T ignore local advocacy groups or club activities. There are a lot of ways to become more involved with the biker community. Find out what’s going on in your neighborhood and get involved. DO have a takeaway. It’s important to display motorcycle awareness messages (bumper stickers, lawn signs, etc.), but having a TM

takeaway option will literally send the message home with your friends and visitors. Having a BBQ? Print some labels with “Watch for Motorcycles”, and space to write someone’s name, and stick them to your disposable cups. Having a yard sale? Use the same labels as price tags for your items. Kid hosting a lemonade stand? Write “Watch for Motorcycles” on the cups. There are lots of quick and easy ways to spread the word. DO use the selfie. Let’s face it, selfies are here to stay, so we might as well use them to encourage motorcycle awareness. Use an app to add a custom motorcycle awareness message to your pics before you share them, or hold up one of our “Watch for Motorcycles” bumper stickers whenever you take a photo. As riders, we all need to work together to spread the word that motorcycles are everywhere. As The Motorcycle Lawyer, I can assure you that many vehicle drivers just aren’t getting it. I know this because I get calls every day from motorcyclists who have been hit by a vehicle driver who claims he or she “didn’t see” / *the motorcyclist, or riders who have had to lay their bikes down to avoid getting hit by drivers who were not motorcycle aware. One month of motorcycle awareness is not enough, we need to keep motorcyclists at the front of every driver’s mind. DO tell us how you’re keeping the momentum going! Before wrapping this up, I wanted to share an update regarding two Michigan Bills that have now been signed into law: House Bills 4853 and 4854, which both took effect May 23. Both laws relate to motorcycle safety training in Michigan. The first, HB 4853, allows public agencies (school districts, colleges, police departments, and other government entities)

offering motorcycle safety training courses to increase their prices from “up to $25” to “up to $50”. The original fees were set in the 1980s and have not increased, even though both demand and cost to offer these courses has gone up. Most agencies have already set their calendars for 2016 and are unlikely to increase their fees until the 2017 riding season. The second Bill, HB 4854, should make up for the fee increase: this law allows motorcyclists applying for an original CY motorcycle endorsement to bypass the Secretary of State’s written test, road sign test, and driving skills test if the rider has successfully taken and passed a certified motorcycle safety course. That’s right: take and pass an SOS-approved motorcycle safety course, and you can apply directly for your motorcycle endorsement. Finally, next month (July) is Women’s Motorcycle Month. The sleek Street Glide with low, rumbling music from the 2-into-1into-2 exhaust system never failed to get attention as I rode past people working in their yards, chatting outside with neighbors, or filling up at the gas pumps. The batwing-style fairing with the shorty windscreen looks good and offers better than adequate wind protection. The new splitstream vent, located just beneath the windscreen but above the instrument cluster, helps reduce head buffeting by a reported 20 percent making for a more comfortable, less tiring ride. While the Glide weighs in at 810 pounds loaded with oil and fuel, its weight isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t noticeable while under motion or stopped at a light. Even in the slow 90 degree turns transitioning from one road to the next, the bike felt balanced. The upright seating position and reach to the handlebars is comfortable. There was a time when most stock saddle were too soft, too hard, too flat, or too sloping. A short ride caused not only discomfort but also painful, restrictive wedgies. No more. Manufacturers seem to have gotten the message that a comfortable saddle is critical to enjoyable riding, especially when long distances are part of the ride. The Street Glideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 27.4 inch high saddle offers firm, comfort even after a couple hours into the ride. The 103-cubic-inch, High Output Twin Cam, fuel-injected v-twin is impressive. It launches from a stop and cruises effortlessly. Hold on tight when you roll on the throttle. With almost 105 foot pounds of torque, the acceleration is intoxicating.

The ride is comfortable despite rather stiff suspension. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know whether the stiff suspension was due to the fact that the motorcycle was new or the suspension was stiff by design to improve handling. On smooth surfaces and even on light bumpy sections, the stiffness wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an issue. On the short bumpy section of broken and patched asphalt mentioned previously, it bounced slightly. No loss of control; merely a comfort issue. That said, the road was truly poor so it would be surprising if any motorcycle could handle those bumps better without handling suffering. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to ride fast, you had better have good brakes. The Street Glide is equipped with a single fixed rotor and 32 mm, four-piston calipers front and rear. While my preference is for dual disks brakes up front, especially with a heavyweight motorcycle, the Street Glide came to quick, controlled stops in every situation I tested. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed riding the Street Glide. The combination of style and performance makes it a cool, fun ride. This motorcycle would likely be equally at home in the rural setting through which I rode, in an urban environment, or cruising down the highway crossing Stateline after Stateline. Among the other affiliations and groups with which I am involved, I am the Michigan attorney for Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM), a national organization dedicated to representing motorcyclists who have been injured in accidents or have had their civil rights violated. As such, I have the privilege of attending its annual convention every May. It is attended not only by the AIM attorney representing each state, but it is also attended by thousands of motorcyclists from across the country. Given the multi-state makeup of the attendees, one of the great benefits of the convention is that you learn about issues that motorcyclists are dealing with in their respective parts of the country and ideas are shared regarding those issues. As an attorney, I find it very interesting because time has shown that if there is an issue going on in one part of the country, there is a good chance that it is an issue that we may have to deal with in our part of the country at some time down the road. One of the issues that I found of particular interest at this year’s convention was that in a growing number of areas of our country, it is becoming more common for certain bars and restaurants to refuse to allow motorcyclists into their establishments. The stories ranged from establishments employing a “no colors” policy to certain establishments refusing to serve anyone who arrived at their door on a motorcycle. It appeared that this discrimination against motorcyclists was based mainly on stereotypes that bikers are bad for business, in that they intimidate other customers, are misbehaved and are prone to causing fights in the establishment. As with every segment of the community, there are some bad apples who act in a way from which the stereotype

was born. However, not every person who wears a color on his back or rides a motorcycle is going to act like that. Unfortunately, it is not illegal for privately owned establishments to discriminate like this, leaving the biker with no legal recourse. However, just because the establishment may be able to keep a biker out, it doesn’t mean there isn’t anything the biker can do about it. As in our neck of the woods, bikers in other areas of the country are a tight knit group where word of mouth travels fast. The bikers at the convention sharing these stories of discrimination told us that these discriminatory establishments became “black listed” in the biking community and many bike clubs and organizations that have websites posted these stories for viewers to see. The attitude towards these establishments became “if you don’t want us, we don’t want you either”, and these establishments were hit in the pocketbook, losing out on a significant amount of business from bikers, both individuals and groups or clubs. When it was pointed out to many of these establishments how much money they were losing, many changed their tune and began to welcome the biking community. The more disturbing angle to this issue is that in some states, some otherwise biker-friendly establishments are being threatened by local law enforcement to adopt discriminatory polices against bikers. Some stories were such that local law enforcement threated local establishment owners that if they were going to let bikers in, then law enforcement was not going to provide law enforcement assistance to these establishments or, in some extreme cases, threatened to investigate these establishments for “alleged” non-compliance

with code or health regulations. If it could be proven that law enforcement was behind a discriminatory practice at an establishment, the biker could have a good civil rights case to pursue. The problem is that it seems that while establishment owners will share the information about law enforcement pressure with the bikers, they are afraid to testify against law enforcement in a court of law. Along similar lines, the bikers at the convention felt it important to point out that if you know of any biker friendly bars and restaurants, show your appreciation by recommending the establishment and steering some biker business their way. This will help reinforce that the great majority of bikers are good people and are no more likely to cause problems in their establishment than any nonbikers would. If any readers have experienced this type of discrimination at any local restaurants or watering holes, I encourage you to share your story with me and discuss the best way to deal with the issue. Tech Talk: Handlebars by Franz “The Preacher” Hoffer

In my opinion, one of the least considered items on a motorcycle are the handlebars. We tend to accept the bars that came with the bike and go along our merry way; that is, unless you decide you’ve just got to have those ape hangers. I fail to see how they can be comfortable on a long ride. That written, they do look cool. I’ve been investigating handlebars as I may want to make a change on my 2011 Road Glide Ultra. I’ve been to several “Motorcycle Rodeos,” took the “Ride Like A Pro Class” last year from Gary Lewandowski, and also observed a training class to see the intense training that police motor units go through. I noticed two modifications on their motorcycles: their handle bars are taller than the stock and the seats are the huge bicycle-style seats with adjustable air bellows underneath them. The combination of these two upgrades brings the handlebars closer to the rider and the rider higher in the seat than the stock bikes. That combination gives the rider more precise control of the bike. To get the real authoritative scoop on handlebars, I once again defer to my ace mechanic, Jerry B of Jerry B’s Cycle Works (25430 Harper Ave, St Clair Shores, MI 48081, Ph#1-586-773-BIKE). The Preacher (TP): Hi Jerry, how are you doing? Busy time of year for you? Jerry B (JB): Busier than a one armed paper hanger. TP: OK, I’ll try to make it fast…or at least as fast as I can. JB: Shoot, my friend. TP: I want to talk about handlebars. Just a few questions. First, how do you choose the “right handlebar” if there even is such a thing? JB: Tough question, it’s mostly rider preference. The average rider prefers to sit upright on touring models and more forward on sport bikes. TP: Are the bars that come on the bike always the right ones? JB: Riders are prone to purchase a new motorcycle that fits their comfort zone but many who buy used motorcycles change the bars to fit them. TP: Are different handlebars adapted to different types of uses? JB: Absolutely, drag bars work well with sport bikes with lots of horse power. They make it easier to hang on. Touring bikes have a higher rise and pullback for more comfort and, if you’re out for that cool look, apes! TP: If a rider wants to change handle bars TM

what are the considerations? JB: Again, you need to pick what fits you. When a customer walks thru the door, he or she already knows what they don’t like about the bars they have and they know what changes they want. I help select a higher or lower bar and what diameter (1", 1-1/4", and 1-1/2”) as well as determining the need to accommodate internal or external wiring. TP: How hard is it to change handle bars? JB: Handlebars with minimal rise or pull back changes take one to two hours. Bars like apes can take all day with cable changes and extending left and right control harnesses. TP: About how many handle bar changes do you do in a typical season? JB: Not my favorite job so not too many. I average five or six handle bar changes during the season and maybe one or two apes. I only switch bikes over to ape hangers in the off season due to the time and work required. TP: What do you generally charge for that type of service? JB: Good question, costs can vary from $200.00 up. We’ve done ape hangers for more than $1000! TP: Just for giggles, what’s your opinion of ape hangers? Ever had a bike with one? JB: Ape hangers have many advantages. Believe it or not, they are flexible as far as adjustment and you can push them forward for a sport feel or you can pull them back to your lap. Most are aligned with the fork tube angle. They are also more comfortable then they look; you need to test ride one to get it! Apehangers also come in all three diameters and come in several rises from 10" to just over 20". No, I never had them on my own bikes. I like playing around with tight curves and maneuvers requiring good control so I stick to the bars similar to the police bikes. Hope this helps. Handlebars are not my favorite subject! TP: As always Jerry, thanks for your input and benefit of your years of experience. So there you have it, a quick tutorial on handlebars.
