Sunshine and temperatures in the mid60s kept me company as I distributed the May issue in late April. Seeing so many motorcyclists out riding had me in an envious state. I’m usually quite observant, mentally logging the brands and models being ridden. Think of it as an on-going survey of the motorcycle industry. One guy riding a sport bike had me wondering about his thought processes. The temperature was mild and maybe even a little cool when exposed to the wind. He was dressed in leather, armored jacket and pants but no helmet. I considered his thinking when he mounted up that day. Don’t get me wrong. I have said and written that riders should have the choice whether they want to wear a helmet. Deciding what others do or wear isn’t my decision as long as it doesn’t affect me. Wearing leather on that day made perfect sense to me. Leather almost always offers the best protection in a crash should a motorcyclist slide along the asphalt or cement. Leather is also offers greater wind resistance (assuming vents are closed) and helps keep the body warm when the temperature cools. So why not also wear a helmet? A helmet offers better protection in a crash. If you need proof, watch video online of roadracers crashing at high speed and then walking away unscathed. If the rider I saw that day put on his leathers to protect his body in the event of crash, why not also protect his noggin? A helmet also offers warmth in the cold. They’re not airtight but they dramatically cut down air flow from the outside. If he suited up in his leathers for greater warmth, why not also put on the helmet? Helmets help keep the cool air out. Since he wasn’t wearing a helmet when either of those excuses (protection or warmth) was a good reason to wear one, what was his reasoning for not wearing one? Was it simply that he trying to look cool?

We hope you’ll find this issue interesting. Gene Southard visited the Zero Motorcycle factory in Santa Cruz, California on his way back from New Zealand. He met company CEO, Sam Paschel, toured the factory, and then test rode two models. Be sure to read Gene’s article to learn more about the manufacturing of zero electric motorcycles. We’re also paying tribute to the late Robert Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The book has been read by millions but the philosophy discussed therein has confused many. While not a book review, we share some thoughts about the book and its message. We hope you like it. Harley-Davidson aficionado, Franz “The Preacher” Hoffer, reviews some low cost solutions for older Harleys that didn’t come equipped with the high tech gee-gaws found on the current models. While new motorcycles are great, some accessories are accessible for those motorcyclists with older models. Check it out. The Motorcycle Lawyer, Jason Waechter, shares some ideas when riding around semi trucks. We’re less safe around them mainly because we’re less visible to the semi driver and other drivers and we don’t have the same visual field either. Other issues affect our safety as well. Be sure to read Jason’s column for some solid safety tips. A recent ride was not everything I had hoped. While the exploratory tour wasn’t terrible, I expected a more enjoyable experience. Welcome to the Future of Motorcycling! By Gene Southard Electric motorcycles, in the eyes of many people, will be the future of motorcycling. I have been following the ins and outs of the development of electric motorcycles for the last several years so, when I was invited to tour the Zero factory in Santa Cruz, California, I jumped at the opportunity. Zero is the current leader in this new segment with six models including two power options: 6.5 and 13 Kilowatts. The factory is located in a non-descript building in an industrial area just south of San Francisco. One of the first things you notice when you pull into their parking lot is the number of employee-owned electric motorcycles parked outside. Zero provides their employees with

free charging. We also took advantage of their charging stations to restore the battery on the Chevy Volt we were driving. Jared was my photographer on the tour and my neice joined us for the excursion. The reception area has only a computer to contact the person you wish to see. After meeting with several of the management personnel, our tour started with a walk through the engineering department. We were instructed not to take pictures of prototype bikes or parts. Next, we were taken to the assembly area. I was impressed with how open they were in letting us talk to the employees on the assembly line. There are 10 assembly stations

starting with the frame assembly and ending with the ABS brake programming area. The frame is supplied by a Japanese supplier, the battery is made in-house along with the assembly of the electric motor. After final assembly, each machine is tested using a rolling dyno. I was allowed into the dyno room during a pull. The only thing you hear is the whine of the tires. The dyno screen readout looked nothing like the readout on my dyno. After the assembly line tour, we were taken to a conference room where we spent 30 minites talking with Sam Paschel, the new CEO, and Chris Heimbuck from Customer Relations. You could hear the enthusiasm in Sam’s voice as he talked about the product that they were making and his first ride on a Zero motorcycle that convinced him to take the CEO position. Sam told me that sales increased more than 10% over the previous year. As some of my questions got technical, his answers became more guarded which is understandable considering the nature of the product that Zero is producing.

Their models include the S street fighter, the SR hot rod model, the DR dual sport model, the DSR adventure model, their FX trail and twisties model, and their FXS supermoto model. Some models come with 6.5 KW power; others with 13 KW battery power. You can also get an optional battery pack adding 3 KW for a total of 16 KW. All models come with a standard 110 volt charger or optional charger pack with J1772 plug for faster charge times. This is the plug that most electric automobiles use, so finding a public charging spot should be easier. After our conversation with Sam, we were offered a test ride on three of their demonstrators. Continued from previous page control. After the first quarter mile, I could tell the only problem I was going to have was keeping the bike under the speed limit. The acceleration was impressive and the handling light and agile. I had only one question after the test ride: “When can I do a track day on one of these?” There have been multiple road tests published in this and other publications so I will not cover all the details of each model here. Your local dealer can offer you a test ride and

answer all your questions. Most dealers only have demonstrators on hand for test rides. When they sell a motorcycle, it is ordered from Zero and then shipped with a week or two turn around. I was impressed with the professionalism of the Zero motorcycles team and operation. Over the years, I have toured several motorcycle manufacturers and although Zero was not the largest, their quality of manufacture is second to none. I am going to try to find a place in my garage for the future of motorcycling.

How to Stay Safe Around Semi Trucks by Jason Waechter, Esq. One of the more recent cases I settled involved a semi truck hitting a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was on his way to work in the early morning when it was still dark. He was in the far right lane approaching an intersection. In the lane next to him was a semi truck. At the intersection, the truck driver attempted a right turn from the second lane, not the dedicated right lane. It was clear that my client wasn’t at fault, but at our initial meeting, he told me that he felt overwhelmed and overpowered going up against this international trucking company. Like most trucking companies, this one had a team of accident investigators, insurance adjusters, and reconstructionists on the scene in a matter of hours. It’s not uncommon for companies to pay tens of thousands of dollars for accident investigation teams. These teams have one job: prove that the truck driver wasn’t at fault and try to gather evidence to argue it was some percentage the motorcyclist’s fault. That’s why I’ve created my own team of accident reconstructionists and experts to investigate the accident and get to the truth of what happened. My clients have access to this incredible team, and that’s one thing that helped this particular client win his case. During the case, the defense lawyers wanted to argue that the truck driver couldn’t see the motorcyclist. They relied on a belief that most laypeople have - that tractor-trailers have blind spots along their sides. Because I had assembled a team of knowledgeable experts, I was able to prove that the motorcyclist wasn’t in a blind spot. The trucking company’s defense crumbled. I want to advise motorcyclists to take measures to protect themselves around negligently operated semi trucks. Here four ways you can stay

safe around tractor-trailers: First, always assume that the truck driver can’t see you. It doesn’t matter if you’re next to, in front of, or behind the truck, if you can’t see the driver’s eyes, assume he can’t see you. Second, if you’re in the far right lane and approaching an intersection, be aware that the tractor-trailer may attempt a right turn from the second lane. Turning from the second lane is easier for the driver and helps him minimize the chance that he’ll cut the corner and go over the curb. Third, don’t move in front of a semi truck unless you leave more distance than you think you need. Keep in mind that tractor-trailers need more time and distance to stop, especially when they’re carrying a heavy load. Fourth, when you’re following a semi truck, leave extra distance between yourself and the truck. Semi trucks often kick up rocks and other potentially fatal road debris. If you’re hit by a semi truck, it is possible to face them in court and feel confident of the team that stands behind you. Don’t give in to the feelings of being overwhelmed and powerlessness that so often come with a trucking accident investigation. Revisiting Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Ray Peabody Robert Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values, died on Monday, April 24, 2017, at the age of 88. I last read his book several years ago. For those who haven’t read Zen, a summary might be useful. The premise is a motorcycle trip by the narrator (un-named but presumably Pirsig), his son, Chris, and his friends, John and Sylvia, through the upper Midwest. The narrator, rather than detailing each mile of the trip, uses the time to discuss the philosophy of a person he calls Phaedrus. Motorcycle maintenance is discussed in the book but it’s used as a tool to help illustrate Phaedrus’ philosophy. Ghosts and mental illness play prominent roles in the story as well. My thinking about Zen is contradictory. On one hand, I enjoy the sections of the story related to motorcycle touring, elements of the philosophy I’ll describe later, and the back story about Phaedrus. On the other hand, the story gets bogged down in the detailed description of the philosophy. If I remember correctly, I started reading Zen four or five times and eventually stopped reading before finishing the book because of frustration with the philosophy. I finally read the book through to the end and felt drained by the experience. The reading and thinking about the concepts is work. That said, I understood how the concepts related to real life and felt enlightened by that understanding. Two concepts were especially useful for me.

Romantic vs Classical: The distinction between romantic and classical understanding is a concept that I somehow understood despite not having named the concepts. The number of times I’ve complained to friends or family members about people who don’t

understand how things – mechanical things like motorcycles and cars – work is countless. In Pirsig, I found a compatriot who described two types of people: those who see things as they outwardly appear without understanding the underlying functionality (romantic) as compared to those who understand the various complex systems functioning together that ensure a machine – in this case, a motorcycle – works as it should. Romantics focus on appearance and emotions. Classicalists focus on rules and systems. To help explain this distinction, the narrator describes John and Sylvia as “romantics” because they have no interest in technology (the way things work), including the functionality and maintenance of the motorcycle they’re riding. They expect their BMW to operate well and, if it needs service or repairs, they take it to a shop. Alternatively, the narrator is constantly involved with the maintenance of his motorcycle including checking and changing the oil, adjusting the tappets/valves, monitoring engine temperature, and gauging the wear of his tires. Pirsig suggests that these two modes are distinct and rarely does a person match both. I don’t necessarily agree on that point. I think a person can have a classical understanding of technology while also appreciating the visual / romantic appeal of a machine. The reverse seems not as likely.

Quality: Quality is a topic that will find

disagreement anytime two or more people talk about it. (Search for quality on-line for evidence.) The problem according to my simple understanding of Pirsig’s argument is that quality is not something anyone can actually define, but most can agree on quality when they see it. People can also identify when quality is missing. I never thought much about what quality actually is and struggled with Prisig’s Chautauqua on quality. However, Zen forced me to think about quality

which then made me more conscious of it when I see it and when it’s lacking. I was happy I finally read Zen through to the end. I’ve re-read the complete story several times since and find that each reading reveals details I didn’t get the previous time through. That said, I’ve read Zen for the last time. The story offers value to readers willing to wade through but other books such as Matthew B. Crawford’s Shop Class as Soulcraft offer similar philosophical ideas about classical modes of understanding (without using the terminology) as related to motorcycles and working with one’s hands. Plus, it’s easier to read. If you haven’t read Zen, don’t use this summary as a reason to keep you from reading the book. This isn’t a full review of the book. The story is interesting and it offers surprises through to the end. You might not have as much difficulty as me in finishing it up the first time through. R.I.P., Mr. Pirsig. Thank you for the philosophy lesson.

Not the Worst Ride Ever by Ray Peabody When returning from a ride, people (family, friends, acquaintances) will often ask, “How was it?” I have several responses depending on who I’m talking with. “I was on a motorcycle. What could be better?” “It was like a party with friends. Fun and sometimes a little crazy.” “Similar to sex. The ride was sometimes bumpy, but it was fun and the views were spectacular.” My response is always positive, but the ride is not always so. Yes, most times it is. When it isn’t, a variety of factors – heavy traffic, road construction, distracted cagers, a breakdown, unsafe riding companions, ill health, bad attitude, etc. – can make the experience less enjoyable. A recent ride was that for me. A few hours in the middle of the afternoon were open for an escape. I geared up and set a course northward beyond the local riding area I usually ride. With no destination in mind and no map to guide me, exploration was the only plan. After only a few minutes in the saddle, my focus improved and body relaxed. The Tiger’s triple was purring like a lap cat. (I don’t like anthropomorphizing inanimate objects but the bike seemed as enthusiastic for the ride as I was. Or maybe it was just me imposing my emotions on the bike.) We were in synch as we moved through congested local traffic and made our way into the country. Seven miles out on a two-lane road, traffic first slowed and then briefly stopped. We puttered along for a quarter mile or so before entering a road construction area. No actual construction or

destruction was taking place at that moment but the top layer of asphalt had been skimmed off in preparation for a resurfacing. What was left was a grooved surface with small, hollowed-out dimples. Some of the grooves were significant enough that the front tire occasionally followed one of the grooves. None of this was a big deal beyond the fact that I only had a few hours to spare and time was wasting. When we exited the construction zone five miles and 20 minutes later, traffic opened up and speeds increased. Twenty miles later, I turned east on, as luck would have it, a great little two-laner. The first mile or so of that road was rough with patches and potholes covering much of the road surface. I almost turned back twice but continued on. The After passing through an intersection with a more heavily traveled road, the road surface improved dramatically. A quarter mile down, I saw my first scurve sign. I’m not sure if I vocalized it, but in my head, I was shouting “YESSSSS!” A curve to the right, back to the left, and another left before curving back right and heading due east. I found same combination of curves three times further down the road. After the last of those curves, a 90degree curve to the left and then a another back to the right. More sweeping curves led me into White Cloud where I stopped for water at the Veterans

Regrettably, I followed a different, more familiar path towards home in order to avoid the construction zone. It’s a good road cut through hills and around lakes. Unfortunately, traffic was heavier than usual which kept the speeds slower than I would have preferred. Traffic was running at 50-55

On the south side of one of those villages, I came closer than ever to a serious collision with a car. Traffic was heavy in both directions. I was following the car ahead by about three car lengths. A car trying to cross the road from a side street shot between two cars of the oncoming traffic and me and the car ahead of me. Startled to see this car crossing the road, adrenaline flooded my system. I jabbed at the foot brake and grabbed a handful of both the front brake and clutch. No escape route was evident. Significant bodily harm was certain if I veered left into oncoming traffic. To go right would have surely meant either being run over by the car or hitting it broadside. The Tiger’s tires squealed in protest of the hard braking. Fortunately, the hard braking was sufficient. The offender’s right rear quarter panel passed in front of me before I reached that same spot, leaving me open road ahead. My heart pounded the “Wipeout” drum solo in my chest as I rode on. Had I not reacted instantly to the car cutting through traffic across my lane, I’m certain I would have hit him. Thank you preparation and practice! The heightened sense of awareness created from that near miss was with me the rest of the ride home. My every move was deliberate, even after I arrved home, from removing my gear to parking the bike in the garage. I was fully present. I like that state of mind but didn’t like how I got there on that day. When I walked into the house, Heidi greeted me with “How was your ride?” My first automatic thought was: “I was riding a motorcycle. What could be better?” Instead, for the first time ever, I shrugged, “It wasn’t the worst ride ever.”

We don’t have first-hand knowledge, but multiple websites and blogs are reporting that The Motor Company has announced that it is planning to introduce 100 new models in the next 10 years. Whew! That’s a lot of new models. If true, the follow-up questions are: What type of new models? Models based on the current platform and engines? Something slightly different like a street-tracker version? Maybe a design completely different from anything the company currently offers, like an adventure bike? The aforementioned websites and blogs are writing that some version of the LiveWire electric motorcycle (previously seen in promotions and a nation-wide tour) will likely be part of that development plan. An electric would be an interesting addition to

the line-up but it would likely face some of the same challenges Buell encountered. Trying to sell sportbikes to a cruiser-oriented customer base didn’t work too well. Could an electric have success where a sportbike failed? We’ll see. This aggressive development agenda, if true, is good for both HarleyDavidson and the industry. The company hasn’t yet tapped into many market segments. Focus has historically been good for them. However, as the current market ages and new riders come in, new products might better serve the company in the future. Stay tuned...

Huge Power Output Without a Turbo Charger Alterego, an Italian company launched in 2015, is developing a “drum charger” that promises an increase in power and torque in small displacement engines. While the technology is still in development, the company displayed a KTM RC390 using the drum charger technology at the recent EICMA show in Europe. According to Alterego, the charger “increased the 390s torque and power output by 15% while also simultaneously increasing efficiency with little or no recalibration of the engine. The power curve is clearly smoother and stronger, especially at low revs; the engine can withstand braking (?) at lower rpms, while it can reach higher revs at the top end. Overall, the engine is more powerful, yet more smooth and usable.”

Other benefits to the drum charger include light weight, no turbo-lag, constant mild torque, elimination of the airbox, no electronics (passive system, self-triggering), extremely low cost, suitable for low-displacement, single cylinder

engines, and is maintenance free. On the downside, the system is unfit for high displacements, has a limited increase in pressure, limits the top-end revs to 10,000 rpms, and also is challenging to install because of its size and shape. Alterego is planning for a 2018 commercial release for some applications. As described by the company, the performance and cost of the drum charger is appealing. We’ll see whether the actual product can match the concept. I wouldn’t mind boosting my XR400R performance if the price is right. For more information, visit www.alteregohardware.com.

Furion, a French company, is developing a motorcycle powered by a hybrid combination of a 654cc, 125 horsepower Wankel rotary engine and a 55 horsepower, 40kilowatt electric motor. This combination is designed to produce 180 hp and an incredible 151 foot pounds of instantly available torque. The pre-production naked M1 roadster uses a six-speed transmission, tubular steel trellis frame, 43 mm adjustable front forks, horizontal gas-type back-link monoshock, and weighs in at 461 pounds wet.

M1 riders had best be prepared when rolling on the throttle. That kind of torque is crazy, especially for inexperienced riders. I suspect that wheelies – controlled or not – will be a breeze. Making Changes

by Franz “The Preacher” Hoffer Everyone out there knows that I am 100% all about The Motor Company. I would never trade my Harley-Davidson for anything except another Harley-Davidson and that will never change. As much as a new motorcycle in the garage would be nice, the price of a new ride is cost prohibitive. That and I’m happy with my current ride. My 2011 Road-Glide Ultra has been a great bike as was my previous 2001 Electra Glide Standard. I remember when I traded in my 01’ Electra Glide for the 11’ Road Glide, I couldn’t believe the advancements in suspension, ride, feel, fuel injection over carburetion, sixspeed transmission over five-speed tranny, improvements in the audio system, available cruise control, and six-gallon tank over the old standard five-gallon tank. I love the new bike (although it’s now six years old, I still call it my “new bike”) but in some ways really miss the Electra Glide. The complexity of newer motorcycles (not just Harley-Davidson) has reached the point that many things force me to take mine in for service instead of doing it myself. I see the same things happening in the motorcycle world that happened in the automotive world; a plethora of electronics is taking over and the do-it-yourself mechanic will soon be a thing of the past. As I look at the 2017 models from every manufacturer, the electronics and touch screens are, in my opinion, creating a dangerous environment for all riders. The electronics distract from the business at hand; driving the motorcycle. All that written, never let it be said that The Preacher can’t adapt.

I don’t have a modern in-dash GPS on my 11’ Road Glide but I did buy a mount that attaches to my handlebars and opens wide enough for my Garmin or I-Phone (WAYZE). That device cost TM

In the interest of comfort, I also added a cup holder; got it for free in Sturgis in 2014. One of the stores was giving them away for visitors who simply came in and browsed. I went in there every day during Bike Week and ended up with three cup holders. I kept one, gave one to my son (2015 H-D Road Glide Screaming Eagle) and another to my my son-in-law (2010 Yamaha…hey, he’s still part of the family). That free cup holder has increased our riding comfort and extended the miles we can ride between stops to gulp down drinks.

One of the amenities I got with my 11’ Road Glide was an intercom system with CB capability. For the price of the motorcycle, it would be nice it they gave you a nice set of headphones or, better yet, two sets (rider/passenger). The single set that comes with the new motorcycle is not of good quality. I replaced that set with a set from J&M for a little over $100; they work great and are comfortable to wear with just about any helmet. Those you get from Harley have to be installed on a particular helmet and cannot be easily transferred to another helmet. The CB option is worth its weight in gold and has made communication between bikes and others on the road as easy as pressing a button on the handle grips. Riders don’t

Continued from previous page have to take their eyes off the road to actuate the system. I have a couple other complaints. Insignificant in the big picture but annoyances nonetheless. Oil changes: I spend at least an hour cleaning the front of the motor every time I change the oil. I know I can buy a piece of plastic for 20 bucks that I have to shove under the filter so it doesn’t make a mess, but I shouldn’t have to do that. Harley engineers should be able to come up with something better. Brakes: Probably the biggest complaint from all Harley owners whose bikes have the early anti-lock braking systems. They work great on smooth roads, but during maximum braking on uneven or bumpy surfaces, the braking system seems to lose its integrity and effectiveness as it skips and engages at different intervals. In one case, that studder almost threw me and the bike into a ditch. The newer systems have rectified that situation but there are still many bikes on the road with substandard anti-lock brakes. Given those issues, I wouldn’t trade the HarleyDavidson experience for anything. For me, it is and always will be the signature bike on the road and the bike all others try to emulate. The new bikes are absolutely incredible and I have to admit to a little envy when I see the newer models on the road. I anticipate my 2011 Road-Glide Ultra will take me to the day I purchase a Trike. And, as you might have guessed, that will be a Harley-Davidson Trike. Ride Safe!!
