The V4 Baby Block®, is a 1650cc (100ci), liquid-cooled V4, is a “clean sheet” engine design. It is heavily inspired by the V8 small block found in many American sports cars, and in racing series such as the 24 Hours of LeMans, NASCAR, ALMS, etc. When it comes to torque, V-engine configurations are renowned for just that. Power ranges from 160-180 bhp, depending on the specific engine version (V4 or race inspired V4R) with peak torque above 120 ft lbs.

34th Annual Battle of the Brits Shines by Ray Peabody
Milford, Michigan – 34 years after the Metro Triumph Riders organized the first Battle of the Brits vintage motorcycle show, the show continues to grow in terms of both the number of vintage motorcycles and attendees. This years show at Camp Dearborn in Milford, Michigan was excellent in a variety of ways. The motorcycles always star in this show. Sure, vintage Triumphs dominate but many other brands are on display including AJS, BSA, Norton, Vincent, Matchless, BMW, Ducati, and even Harley-Davidson. Some are

museum-quality motorcycles but many are regular, if not daily, riders. Most are street-legal road bikes while a few are competition-only, closed-course race bikes. Some are customized while others are bone stock; many of the people attending this show know the difference at a glance. Some are showroom pristine while others – not many - carry the grime of the road. It’s

a show for enthusiasts who appreciate vintage machinery with all of their quirks and weaknesses. If you haven’t attended the Battle of the Brits, you’re missing one of the best vintage motorcycle events in the Midwest and maybe the country. Check out the cover photos and those accompanying this article to get an idea of how beautiful many of these motorcycles are. The people who both show off their machines and those who come to see them also help to make this show excellent. The aforementioned appreciation of vintage motorcycles is shared by both groups. Questions abound for restoration specialists who have worked so diligently to return an old bike to its former glory. No detail is too small. The mechanical knowledge and restoration techniques apparent in both groups are

broad, deep, and readily shared; despite the strength of the competition. The quality of this event would be diminished without camaraderie between the people who show and those who attend. Finally, and we can’t give credit to organizers for this, the weather was perfect. The day was sunny and warm. The location of the show, however, is something for which we can give the Metro Triumph Riders credit. It is perfect. The show, which includes both motorcycles and British cars, is held on a plateau within the park. Trees within that area act as a canopy for the show and provide shade in which to enjoy the machines. This was my first visit to the Battle of the Brits since its move to Camp Dearborn and it’s the best venue yet. The 35th Annual Battle of the Brits is scheduled for Sunday, September 10, 2017. Our focus was ecommerce at that time,” he said. Eventually his wife, Lisa Strawbridge, left her job as an internet producer at WTOL to work at the business full time as well. She took over the e-commerce, so he could take over local service. “We started in 2011 with oil changes and tire changes,” Lisa said. “It was immediately successful and we outgrew the Sylvania Avenue shop very quickly.” The new location is at 3519 Jackman Road and is nearly three times the size. The building has been in the Toledo automotive industry since the 1960s as Irv’s Auto and Bob Fall’s Automotive. John says they will remain a shop focused on quick services. They’ll be adding more lifts, so oil changes and tire changes can often be done while you wait. They’ve also added service packages including an inspection package, spring maintenance package and accessory installation. Additionally, they’ll offer winter storage as well as motorcycle or dirtbike pick-up and drop-off. “The storage and the pick-up is great to combine with other work,” said John. “In the winter, we have time to take on projects more in-depth than we can do

in the busy season. So we can diagnose problems, rebuild carburetors, etc. We can pick up the bike with our trailer, so riding in bad weather isn’t an issue. In storage, we can change tires and get bikes ready for spring.” One other service available at the location is cylinder head work. Wilson’s Cylinder Head Repair was a tenant in the building and remained when the Strawbridges purchased it.
The retail shop has also grown featuring parts, accessories and apparel. They can get new products for motorcycles, dirtbikes and ATVs from most major distributors in one business day. With the expansion brings a few new areas of focus. First, they will greatly increase used parts. Second, they’ll be adding a section of used dirtbike gear. Lisa describes it as a Once Upon a Child store or Play it Again Sports for dirtbike families. Lastly, they’ll be adding many more community events. They are the business behind Vintage & Rat Rod Motorcycle Nights in downtown Toledo. Low key swap meets are coming to the shop where anyone can come sell their powersports items. Adventurizing a Honda XR400R, Part 1 by Ray Peabody The Lightweight Adventure Project is underway. The motorcycle selected for this project is a 1999 Honda XR400R. Honda XRs are not considered to be high-performance motorcycles. They are heavy compared to motocross bikes. They are also considered to be almost bullet-proof. Basic maintenance – lubrication and tune-ups - will keep these bikes running strong for years. Having owned an XR650L previously, I’m an enthusiastic fan of these bikes and can’t wait to spend some time on the 400. The two downsides of the XR400 are, one, the top speed isn’t fast enough for extended freeway riding and, two, it’s kick start only – no magic button. A change in gearing will help extend the top speed but, more importantly, I don’t plan to use this bike for long-distance freeway riding. The kick start shouldn’t be much of a problem; at least, it won’t be until I can no longer kick start it. So far, as long as I use the correct starting procedure, kick starting the XR hasn’t been a problem. This XR400R was previously set up

Continued from page 11 - XR400R Conversion changes I would have made to the project bike if it didn’t come so equipped. Others, like the PowerCore silencer and knobbies, either aren’t the right parts for an adventure bike or aren’t what I want on my bike. The plan is to make the 400 street legal and sturdy enough to carry some lightweight luggage while also capable of off-road adventuring. First steps have already been taken to make it street legal including the addition of a foldable mirror from Baja Designs, a silencer / spark arrestor for the
PowerCore slip on, Shinko 700 Series Adventure tires front and rear, and licensing / insuring the bike. The mirror is sturdy and offers good rearview visibility for what was a $22 investment. The FMF muffler was far too loud for my tastes but the silencer (just over $43) helped reduce the exhaust note dramatically. It’s still not as quiet as I would like – I prefer to be stealthier when I ride – but it’s significantly quieter than it was. The Shinko tires are, at first impression, the best conversion so far. The DOT-approved 700 Series tires are designed for 60% road and 40% offroad travel. The big lugs are situated far enough apart to provide good grip in loose gravel, dirt or sand while being close enough together for a smooth ride on the pavement. I decided on the Shinkos after visiting their website (www.shinkotireusa.com) and reading reviews of some of their tires. The MSRP for the 3.00-21 front is $61.95 and, for the 130/80-18 rear, the MSRP is $85.95. The attempted first road ride didn’t turn out to be the first ride. It was dusk when I launched from the driveway. The ride didn’t

last long because the headlight, which was weak originally, Shinko 700 didn’t light up. I also Series discovered that rear Adventure brake wasn’t working tire (rear) properly. Fortunately, I was testing everything out so the brake problem didn’t present itself in an emergency situation. Both problems were resolved quickly. The first real ride was fun if not a little too

short. The XR handled quite well on the pavement once I scrubbed the tires in. I wanted to push it a little harder into the corners but decided not to challenge the traction just yet. A ride down a dirt road that had just been graded showed some weakness in the current set up. The suspension is too stiff so the XR bounced around whenever I hit a bump and was close to out of control through a short washboard section. The tires, which I checked prior to the ride, seemed over inflated in the loose dirt so the traction was significantly less than optimal. Setting up the suspension to my weight is high on the list of next steps. Overall, I’m quite happy with the XR. The engine is torquey if not especially fast. It’s saddle and seating position are comfortable for an hour or so but needs a longer test. I’m just getting familiar with the mechanicals but working on it seems relatively simple. (I hope I won’t regret that statement.) Next steps in the conversion include the aforementioned suspension set up, changing out both sprockets (lose a tooth or two on the rear and increase a tooth on the front for more top end speed) and replacing the chain, replacing the TrailTech Endurance computer (the one currently mounted on the bike doesn’t work and I prefer a set up that’s mechanical with an analog gauge), replacing the headlamp with one that is significantly brighter than the current lamp, flushing the brake lines and replacing the pads, and exploring luggage options among other things. I had forgotten how much I enjoy these projects. Yes, some elements can be frustrating but I’m enjoying getting my hands dirty and figuring out how to solve various problems. I look forward to both the work and the ride. Stay tuned.

Motus Comes to Michigan Grand Rapids, MI - Blane Kamp, owner of BMW Motorcycles of Grand Rapids, has announced that his company has taken on the Motus Motorcycles franchise. Motus, founded in 2008 by Lee Conn and Brian Case, builds sport-touring motorcycles in Alabama. Motus offers two models: the MST and the MSTR. The motorcycles are similar in that both are powered by a fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, V-4 small block engines, use six-speed dual-overdrive transmissions, are equipped with ride-by-wire throttle control, have cruise control, come with removable side cases, and carry premium Sargent seats. The differences are few but important.

The MST V-4 produces 165 horsepower while the MSTR has been tuned to produce 180. The MST uses an Ohlins front fork and a Progressive rear monoshock but the MSTR uses Ohlins suspension both front and rear. The MST uses adjustable Helibar handlebars and the MSTR comes mounted with sport handlebars. The MST has a single Powerlet electrical port while the MSTR has three. There are other, less significant differences between the two models and each has a variety of options available. “We’re incredibly excited about Motus Motorcycles,” said Blane Kamp, Owner and General Manager of BMW Motorcycles of Grand Rapids and the new Motus of Grand Rapids. “There is a lot to like. The motorcycles are American made and are powered by an engine that is unique in the motorcycle market. These are fast, torquey sport-touring motorcycles and we think both our existing customers and also customers not familiar with our dealership will be interested in these bikes.” Three Motus motorcycles will be arriving at the dealership by the end of October. If you start your ride in Munising, and follow along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (M28), you’ll eventually find yourself in Marquette. It used to be known as a shipping port and iron mining town, but today, Marquette is the UP’s most populated city. DO bring your camera. Today, Marquette is known for its natural beauty, with plenty of excellent photo locations available within just a few minutes ride. The town itself is picturesque, and has received the All-American City award, as well as being named one of America’s Most Livable Communities. DON’T ride on an empty stomach. When you get to Marquette, go straight to Third Street Bagel, one of my favorite stops in the area. It’s close to the Northern Michigan University campus, which is also worth visiting. They have an incredible world-class sports dome there that houses several Olympic training facilities. DO enjoy the scenery as you leave Marquette for Houghton, Michigan; you’ll be riding along Lake Superior to the “Gateway to the Keweenaw.” Houghton was named after renowned doctor and geologist, Douglas Houghton, who is known for his extensive exploration of the Keweenaw Peninsula. DON’T forget to howl when you check out Michigan Technological University (Michigan Friday, November 25, 2016 Tech), home of the Huskies. I try to make it a point to stop by Michigan Tech whenever I’m in Houghton to visit my Special pricing throughout the store. Time flies when you’re riding a motorcycle, right? Here in the Midwest, we lucked out in the weather department for this year’s riding season. Autumn has been warm and dry enough to help extend the season, but as we ease into November, we have to start thinking about storing our motorcycles for the winter months. Before getting into the ice and snow, I wanted to share some of the “dos and don’ts” I learned this past summer while on a fantastic road trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP). DO be prepared for the ride. There’s a saying in Michigan: “if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes… it’ll change.” Even if the forecast is for wall-to-wall sunshine, be sure to pack a light rain suit and anything else you might need if the weather turns from sunny to soggy. DON’T forget to brush up on Michigan’s motorcycle and traffic laws, if you’re from out of state; you can find plenty of law-related information on my website. DO know your options: whether you’re coming in from Wisconsin or over the Mackinac Bridge, there’s something special about riding in the UP.

Copper Harbor started out as a mining and shipping town for local copper deposits, but today is better known for spectacular scenery and quaint shops and restaurants in town. If you’re doing a late- or early- season trip, plan to spend the night and see if you’ll be lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights. DON’T forget to pack some hiking boots, or at least some tennis shoes, because you’ll want to explore some of the trails on the Keweenaw Peninsula. From leaf-peeping to waterfalls to some of the most spectacular views of Lake Superior you can imagine, the Keweenaw peninsula has something for every nature lover. Be sure to catch a sunset from one of the trails overlooking Lake Superior. DO remember that you’ll be riding on twolane highways and small surface roads; while there may be less traffic, Marquette County and Delta County are tied for the highest number of accidents involving motorcycles and motor vehicles that result in injury or death, according to the Accident Data Center. In fact, Houghton and Dickinson counties are not far behind, having the highest number of accidents resulting in injury or death involving all types of vehicles: cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, and motorcycles. DON’T forget to be vigilant when riding in any city or town, even if it’s a small one. According to a study by Michigan’s Office of Highway Safety Planning, which looked at crashes involving motorcycles and passenger or cargo vehicles, there were almost 1,800 crashes in Marquette County in 2015. Of these, two resulted in fatalities, 295 of the people involved in these crashes were injured, and nearly 1,500 crashes resulted in property damage. There were also fourteen crashes involving motorcycles, including two that resulted in wrongful death, but these occurred outside of city limits. DO remember that some negligent people still drink and drive. The study by Michigan’s Office of Highway Safety Planning discovered that alcohol was a factor in 68 of the vehicle-motorcycle crashes studied. Other than the obviously negligent drunk driver, there may be other “target defendants” in some accident cases where alcohol is a factor. For example, accident injury victims can sometimes seek compensation from a bar or restaurant that overserved a visibly intoxicated driver. To refresh, this was a case where a woman was injured in a motor vehicle accident and made a claim against the applicable no-fault insurance company for payment of, among other items, unpaid medical bills and reimbursement for household chores that were provided by her friends/ family. However, the forms that her friends/family filled out to document their services provided include a claim for services provided 19 days prior to the accident. Also, surveillance video was taken of the plaintiff on the days for which she claimed she needed help around the house, which showed her bending, lifting, driving and running errands. In this case, the Court of Appeals held that the claim for household services was fraudulent. While this may seem reasonable, the dangerous part of the decision was that the Court also held that not only was she thus barred from making a claim for household services, but she was barred from making any claim for no fault benefits including for her medical expenses which had nothing to do with the fraud pertaining to her household services claims. Since the Bahri decision was issued, auto insurance companies have been attempting to use it as an escape plan to get out of paying an injured person’s no fault benefits. Essentially, if any portion of an injured person’s no fault claim that is submitted to the auto insurer for payment contains a mistake, the auto insurance company is painting that mistake as a “fraudulent” claim and is asking courts to dismiss the entirety of the injured person’s no fault claim. I mentioned in my article last May that it would be interesting to see the ramifications of the Bahri decision moving forward. Well, in the one and half years since my article, I can assure you that insurance companies have been aggressively pursuing dismissals of injured persons no fault claims, pointing to the smallest inconsistencies in a claim as cause to eliminate the entirety of the claim. For instance, I have a case where my client injured his back in an

accident and as part of his claim he is seeking lost wages from his motor vehicle rescue job. He testified at his deposition that part of his job duties is to change flat tires and that he hasn’t been able to do so since the accident. Surveillance (Insurance companies love surveillance!) taken many months after the accident showed my client alone in a parking garage after having attended an event in downtown Detroit. He came back to his car to find a flat tire and had no one to assist him in changing it. He spent the next 21 minutes struggling to change his tire so he could leave the garage. The video clearly depicts the grimaces on his face every time he picked something up, the stiff nature of his movements and the multiple breaks he had to take to stop and rest every few minutes of the process. Nonetheless, the insurance company argued that his testimony that he was unable to change tires for his job since the accident was fraudulent and made with the intent to deceive the insurance company. This despite the fact that video clearly shows that there is no way he could return to changing tires for his job in a way and at a pace that would be deemed sufficient for work. It should be noted that in this case, if the Court agrees with the insurance company, not only will he lose his wage loss, claim but also the tens of thousands owed in medical expenses, attendant care and household services, all of which have nothing to do with whether or not he can change a tire. It is not only cases in litigation where insurance companies have been looking for any evidence to support a Bahri type dismissal of a no fault case. I have seen instances of insurance companies contacting an injured person right after an accident asking them to sign and swear to an affidavit where he/she is asked to list dates and descriptions of any prior accidents he/she has been involved in; names and addresses of any doctors and a list of medical conditions they have been seen for in the 10 years before the accident; and any other claims for damages they have brought prior to the incident. On that trip, what is the farthest distance you rode in a 24-hour period of time? I thought some of my runs to Sturgis, covering 1,385 miles in a two-day period, were pretty grueling but that was nothing to compare to the M-I-O SS1,000…Michigan-Indiana-Ohio SaddleSore 1,000 miles in 24 hours or less challenge. My son Eric, best friend, Jimbo, and I did just that this past August. It’s an event sponsored by the Iron Butt Association (website:

www.ironbutt.com), an association I didn’t even know existed until my son told me about the challenge. The website includes information about the Iron Butt Rally and other Iron Butt Association long-distance rides, such as the SaddleSore 1000 (1000 miles in 24 hours), BunBurner 1500 (1500 miles in 24 or 36 hours), and the 50cc Quest (coastto-coast in 50 hours) as well as official Rides and Rules, Event Calendar, Ride Reports, an Iron Butt eStore, Iron Butt Rally information, Tech House, and a search engine for past stories of IBA rides authored by the riders themselves. Even if you never plan to enter a challenge, it’s a worthwhile site to peruse. From the website: The Iron Butt Association (IBA) does not have membership in the traditional sense. We do not have yearly dues, formal meetings or a monthly newsletter. The IBA is a little more loose-knit organization than most clubs. Generally speaking, there are several ways to earn membership. The most notable is to be a finisher of the Iron Butt Rally or a successful finisher of one of the other rides we sponsor, such as the SaddleSore 1000. Rally workers and supporters are also granted membership status. So in early May of this year, we were contemplating taking the challenge. We decided to give a shot. The ride would take off from a truck stop in Grand Rapids at 6 a.m. on the morning of August 27th. We arrived in Grand Rapids from Detroit (about 180 miles) the night before and met at the truck stop where we met Jim VanDenBerghe (vandenbe@triton.net) who was in charge of the ride. We had a nice dinner where we had a chance to ask questions and meet the other riders entering the challenge. 31 riders TM

accepted that challenge. It was cool meeting the other riders, talking with Jim, and also enjoying a good meal; you know how big the portions are at those truck stops. The ride commenced the next morning at 6 a.m. We had cheap, and I mean cheap, motel rooms just off I96 about 12 miles away. What the heck, all we were doing was sleeping there. We had the rooms for Friday and Saturday night as the plan was to get some sleep after we finished the challenge and before heading back to Detroit on Sunday afternoon. According to Jim, most riders would be finishing in about 16 to 19 hours so with kick off at 6 a.m. that would mean being at the finish line between midnight and 3 a.m. Our route was as follows: Grand Rapids, MI south to Valparaiso, IN to Sherwood, OH then back into
Waiting out stormy weather Michigan going north through Lansing, up to Alanson which is northwest of Houghton Lake, back down through Houghton Lake, west to Manistee and then following the Lake Michigan coastline south and back into Grand Rapids. You are required to make certain stops along the way and get receipts for gas at those stops to verify that you were there and on the route; you also have a mileage log that you fill out and turn in at the end of the ride along with your receipts. We arrived at the truck stop at around 5:30 a.m. so we could have a quick breakfast before getting out to the bikes. Jim and his assistant went around to all the bikes and recorded the starting mileage on the odometers and once that was done, off we went. You can ride in groups or by yourself. Eric, Jimbo, and I stayed together. A slow drizzle started and, for the first 50 miles, we seemed to ride in and out of heavy rain. Then the skies opened up and we were not only drenched but forced to get off the road due to high winds and intense lightning.

Continued from page 11 - The Preacher We stayed under the cover of a gas station for about 35 minutes. Then, according to the weather radar, the worst had passed so we headed out again. It rained and rained for the first 10 hours of the ride but none of us ever gave a thought to calling it quits. Finally, around 5 p.m. the rain stopped and we had fairly nice weather the rest of the way. We were at just past the half-way point by then. We did make one mistake. We stopped for a nice dinner in Alanson as it was clear we were going to make it in plenty of time. Not a good idea to have big meal with about 225 miles to go. Fatigue began to set in after the meal; lighter fare would have been much smarter. We pulled into the finish line at the truck stop at 3:11 a.m. having logged 1,010 miles in 19 hours and 11 minutes. Out of the 31 riders who started, 27 finished. One rider had a fuel pump failure and there was a low speed crash at the 300 mile mark due to loose gravel on the shoulder. That rider had pulled off the road to adjust his rain gear. Ironically, he was the first to finish at 12:28 a.m. When he returned home and visited the ER due to pain, he found out he had fractured a rib. As for us, we never went over the posted speed limit but kept a steady pace. Once the rain stopped, it was an enjoyable ride. We saw some great scenery and our excitement grew as we got closer to completing the challenge. This was an incredible experience. It shows just how far you can go on your motor when you have a goal in mind while at the same time being safe and enjoying the ride. The IBA stresses safe riding in the pre-ride material they send you. They also stress safety at dinner the night before the ride and again at breakfast before the start. We are planning to continue our long distance riding with other events sponsored by the IBA. Check out the website and get involved; you won’t be sorry. Once you complete one of the challenges, you belong to a cool brotherhood; what the IBA calls “World’s Toughest Motorcycle Riders.” It’s a distinction you wear with honor and pride. Hope to see you at some future IBA event.

FRAUD!!!!!! Yes, this is the extent of the impact of the Bahri decision and we are not even two years out from the decision. I highly suggest that if you are injured in a motorcycle accident involving a motor vehicle so as to entitle you to make a claim for no fault benefits, you need to watch your submissions in support of your claim very carefully as insurance companies will use the smallest inconsistency as a reason to bar your entire claim for no fault benefits.
