FROM THE DIRECTOR For our contestants, the journey of competition holds a world of unknowns. The extraordinary women representing their hometowns have taken a chance on a dream, and without dreams, we truly do not live an abundant life. They have dreams to not only represent their state as ambassadors of good will for one entire year, but to create a lasting impression in the hearts and minds of those they meet along the way. When I think about the message I want to convey to those considering competing, I always return to one word: opportunity. I reflect back to 1979 when this all began for me and my family. Who knew the decision to accept an opportunity to work with the Miss Universe Organization would change the course of my life and the lives of many forever? It is hard for me to grasp just how much this competition has given to me since I entered the world of pageantry more than thirty years ago. I am constantly amazed by the women I have been privileged to work with. They have the ambition to change lives and affect the future, a trait that is not nearly as abundant as it should be in our society. I am proud to provide our girls with a vehicle for self-improvement

the Miss USA system. It’s a journey I never would have been a part of had I turned down the offer to serve as a director for the Miss Universe Organization. I learned to live by a simple motto many years ago for this very reason, “consider every opportunity, you never know what blessings await!” This is the philosophy by which we have created the first annual RPM Magazine. It is a compilation of helpful advice, planning strategies, and thoughtful narratives put together by the RPM team and our eight 2013 titleholders. We hope you will find it informative, but most importantly, we hope it helps you to discover the many opportunities

WHY COMPETE? RPM Queens are first-timers and pageant veterans!
T
ori Sizemore’s journey began when she entered a pageant to overcome her fear of singing. “I had no intentions of competing again, until I realized there is more to pageantry than crowns, gowns, and rhinestones,” she says, “Pageantry promotes physical, emotional, and intellectual strength as well as beauty, grace, and poise. It is the ultimate selfimprovement tool!” Tori decided to compete in the Miss Teen USA pageant so she could create tangible goals for herself to benefit her future. “This program challenges me to grow as an individual, leader, and role model,”
she says, “I learned a long time ago that goals without deadlines are just ideas, and I refused to waste my time waiting for ambition to find me.” Preparing for the Miss South Carolina Teen USA competition built the work ethic, drive, and ambitious spirit Tori always desired but never pursued, and now nothing can stop her! The Miss USA & Teen USA competitions challenge girls to reach their full potential and grow in mind, body, and spirit. Through this experience, you will improve your communication skills, fitness, and overall outlook on life. Mary Margaret McCord says when she chose

to compete for Miss Alabama USA for the first time in 2011, “I was really just looking for something new. I wanted a challenge, something to work for. I read about the pageant and decided to sign up a month and a half before the competition.” She had no experience or help, but managed to place 3rd runner up out of 50 contestants in the Miss division. “I decided this was something I really wanted to do and set my sights high. In 2013, I won the title of Miss Alabama USA and accomplished my ultimate goal! Now on to Miss USA!” Megan Pinckney, Miss South Carolina USA 2013, says she chose to compete
for the networking opportunities. “You’d be surprised who you have the chance to meet as a titleholder and how people are more interested to get to know you because you are a queen,” she says. “I am also more prepared for life after college because of the pageant, and I know there will never be an interview I won’t be able to do and do well! And for all of the little girls who want to be a beauty queen but don’t think they can, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told no. People told me I couldn’t do it, but look at me now!”
“I encourage anyone who is considering competing in the upcoming state USA pageant to go for it,” Tori says, “...decide why you want to compete and what you hope to take away from the experience, then focus on what you must do to reach that goal. Don’t let these things intimidate you, let them motivate you!”
There are only two times in life: now and too late!”
The pageants are designed to encourage girls to be their personal best and achieve great things. You will walk away from the competition with a new belief in your abilities, and that is the best reward.

excel in all areas of competition. Your parents want to see you succeed, and pageantry is a great way to learn the skills you’ll need in the future. “I have great family and friends who want the best for me, so it makes my job a little easier knowing they believe in me no matter what,” says Megan. “Be sure to stay organized and turn in all of your paperwork by the deadlines,” recommends Ashley. “Write all of your goals down on paper so you can see them in front of you. Then formulate a plan of action. How do you see yourself achieving those goals?
Goals written

process to overwhelm you. This is easier said than done. Take your time. It’s okay to get frustrated, just don’t stay in a rut for too long. Becoming a titleholder is not something that will happen over night. It can take months or even years. Try to maintain an uplifting state of mind. Act as if you are already a titleholder. “This helps you better perform at the state pageant. If you feel you already are the winner, then that is what will resonate with the judges when they see you on stage,” says Ashley. “Persistence is the greatest tool for success,” says Megan. I’ve been fortunate enough to win both of my titles after only competing once, but many of my RPM sisters competed multiple times before reaching the crown. If you give up, you’ll never know what your full potential might be or just how far you can push yourself. Create a mantra for motivation: Be determined. Believe in yourself. If you set your mind to it, make it happen!”

TOP TEN: GETTING READY YOU’VE DECIDED TO COMPETE, NOW IT’S TIME TO GET READY Your year as a titleholder is a fun and rewarding experience, but it comes with a very unique to-do list! We’ve compiled this countdown to a stress-free weekend to ensure you are prepared!
1
Share the exciting news with your family and friends! Discuss finances with your parents and create a calendar to start marking down important dates and deadlines. You don’t want to forget anything!
2
Make a list of potential sponsors with names, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mails. Start thinking about your wardrobe, shoes, and accessories. Begin making calls and setting up interviews with potential sponsors. Be sure your materials are in order and look professional. Remember, this is like interviewing for a job; you will need to leave them information about you, your sponsorship letter, and advertising information. Make sure you have plenty of copies.
3
Step up your exercise program. Start working on your required paperwork forms. Familiarize yourself with the contestant profile and begin to think about how you want to answer these questions. Call your photographer and schedule an appointment for your head shot photo. Start looking for your dress, swimsuit, interview outfit, and opening number outfit. Send all your forms and payments to pageant office by your individual deadline and be sure to remind your parents to book reservations at the hotel.
4
Collect final sponsorship money and/or any ads from sponsors. Pick out your head shot for the program book and submit it to the pageant office. Get the final details of your wardrobe together and try everything on to be

sure the fit and look are exactly the way you want. Practice walking in those new shoes. Ask family and friends to go over some common interview questions with you. Remember, you will only have 2 minutes with each judge. If you are planning to tan for the pageant, call the salon and set up your appointments. You don’t want that red lobster skin tone on stage or an orange glow from spray tanning.
5
Start thinking about how to pack; review the wardrobe checklist (provided with your contestant manual) for needed items. Practice doing your hair and makeup. Keep in mind stage make-up is different than everyday make-up. If you need some guidance, seek out the make-up ladies at a local department store; they are always willing to show you how to apply certain items.
made for the family and tickets have been purchased. Get out the suitcases you want to take and start labeling all your items. Do you have a dress bag for your dress? Is your name on it?
8
Review the pageant schedule. Are your parents aware of their responsibilities? Watch the DVD from last year’s show again. If you are going to get your nails done, schedule the appointment. Double check your packing list; make sure you have thought of all your needs. Do you have your gym bag or backpack for rehearsals? Do you need any special medicines, snacks, or meals?
6 7
Take a deep breath and head out the door for registration. You are on your way to one of the best weekends ever!
Confirm Everything! Call the pageant office to be sure all your paperwork is in order. Verify hotel reservations have been
together and try everything on to be sure the fit and look are exactly how you want!
9
Be sure Mom and Dad are packed and ready. Double check you have the tickets and hotel confirmations. Pack all items needed for the pageant, don’t forget your make-up and hair items. Read over the pageant schedule. Google the location and get driving directions if needed. Do you know what time and where you need to be for registration and orientation? Do your parents know which suitcase and bags go to your room at the hotel? Do you have your dress, shoes, swimsuit, opening number, and interview outfit?
Watch the DVD from last year’s pageant, you may find it helpful. Spend time practicing in front of a mirror; it really does make a difference. Remind your parents to fill out the pageant weekend video, photography, and flower order forms ahead of time and put them in your pageant folder for safekeeping. Remind your parents to purchase tickets for the pageant.

SOCIAL LIVING THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA - BY KRISTEN GIRAULT
B
ecoming a contestant in your state pageant is quite an accomplishment, so congratulations! Not only have you joined an amazing sisterhood of talented and ambitious young women, you’ve put
yourself in a position that will enhance your future, dreams and goals. One of the best parts about your regional title is the opportunity to create your own brand. A great way to do this is to create a Facebook Fan Page using your title. Making your fan page will allow you to brand yourself by using your title, and campaigning for the crown teaches you how to market your assets. Before winning Miss Louisiana USA 2013, I held the title of Miss Louisiana Florida Parishes. Having a Fan Page for my regional title was a way for me to be more involved in my community and network myself to gather sponsors to help me on my way to the state pageants. To build your fan and sponsor base, you have to spread the word that you are a titleholder in a premier event. You can’t expect sponsors to come knocking on your door, begging to give you their money. You have to be willing to ask, and in return you can acknowledge their generosity. Your fan page is both a marketing tool and an easy way for you to show your gratitude and share your experiences. Being able to direct potential donors and fans alike to one central page will not only gain recognition for your title, but will prove to them that you are brimming with personality and ready to share this journey with whoever wants to tag along. Take advantage of your fellow contestants. RPM knows you’re smart all on your own, but imagine what you can accomplish when you have the help of 100 other beautiful and powerful

I also got to speak on ESPN-U at the National Championship game in Miami and that was a lot of fun because I love sports.” Ashley hit the ground running after she was crowned and has made numerous appearances in and around the state while continuing to pursue her modeling career. GETTING THINGS STARTED When it comes to getting prepared, the time to start is now. It can be super overwhelming to prepare to compete for your state title, especially if you let things go until the last minute. Tori Sizemore, Miss South Carolina Teen USA 2013 says, “I am absolutely NOT a procrastinator! I like to get things done early so I don’t have to worry about them, and that’s the approach I took for my state AND nationals preparations.”
1
“When I get my paperwork, I look it over and fill out all of the obvious areas like my name and birthday, then wait a few days to allow myself to think before filling out the rest of the questions. Work on it a little at a time because it may seem too overwhelming if you try it all at once. “ suggests Kelsey Barberio, Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2013.
2
Make sure your paperwork is truthful and professional. When writing your profile, be sure to answer the questions in the way that is most natural to you because the judges will often use this profile as a
3
guide in your interview. Interview is your time to show the judges what it is exactly that makes you special, so your contestant profile needs to reflect everything positive in your life that you would like to talk about. Always make sure you have others help you look it over and perfect it. The pageant may seem like a long time away, but it will be here before you know it, and nobody wants to be stressed out at the last minute trying to get everything together to make your big appearance on the stage. Make lists and stay organized. Be sure to save a copy of all of your paperwork so you may review it before pageant weekend. Make sure you are timely with all of the paperwork deadlines RPM provides; if you need more time just let them know, they will be happy to help.
RPM QUEENS KNOW TO BE TIMELY WITH PAGEANT PREP!

Once you have completed these more business related aspects, it’s time to complete your wardrobe! This should be the most fun part of your preparation. Just make sure you feel beautiful in everything you wear; the judges will see it too! Also, be sure to check out our Pinterest boards on RPM’s website for inspiration.

POINT OF VIEW AN ADVENTURE TO REMEMBER BY LORIN HOLCOMBE
I
entered the Miss Alabama Teen USA pageant to become a positive role model for Alabama’s teens and to have the chance to spread positive self-esteem in every adolescent.
Once I registered, I felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety. As my first serious pageant, I knew I had a lot of work to do in order to have a positive outcome. Instead of letting my anxiety effect my preparation, however, I faced all of the challenges with the determination to succeed. Registration is extremely exciting; you get to meet your competition and put on your regional banner for the first time! You also get to pick out your photo package, pick up your official state T-shirt, and order a video copy of the show. All of these things are extremely important; you will want to remember every moment of this special weekend! Orientation helped my mom and I to better grasp the hectic pageant weekend schedule. It was very inspiring to hear the RPM team and the current titleholders speak about their experiences in the pageant industry and at the national pageants. Immediately after meeting my roommate and the other members of my group, I knew I had instantly made lifelong friends. We all had so much in common, and we became each other’s support system during the weekend. My chaperone was also an integral part of my success at the Miss Alabama Teen USA pageant. Your chaperone will make sure you get everywhere in a timely manner, and she also ensures you have everything together before you go on stage. Saying goodbye to my mom after orientation was a little scary because I knew I was going to be independent of her assistance from that point forward, but it was also exciting because it meant the pageant weekend was finally starting!

The best part about rehearsals is getting to practice your individual stage routine for the first time. It makes the whole experience instantly seem real. It can be intimidating to practice in front of everyone, but if you pay attention and listen to Dr. Don, you’ll be fine. Preliminaries were so much fun; I did not want them to end! Beginning with opening number, you compete with the encouraging applause from your family and friends. Swimsuit is upbeat and exhilarating; don’t forget to have fun with it. Evening gown is your time to shine with all of your beauty and confidence; make the most of every moment you have on the stage, you only get thirty seconds to make a lasting impression! When I saw my family after preliminaries, they gave me all of the uplifting praise I needed to make the most out the following day at the state pageant. Interview was one of my favorite portions of the competition. The judges do not try to interrogate you; they just want to get to know you. That being said, it is important to stay true to yourself. Don’t get nervous, be open and honest, and I promise you will feel that you have made the most out of your interview experience. During Saturday’s rehearsals, I felt confident in my ability to compete, but the stage directions were a little confusing. Just be sure to pay close attention to Dr. Don. If you make Top 15, Top 10, and Top 5 you will want to know exactly what to do to make the most of your moment. After rehearsals on Saturday, it is time to prepare for the finals competition. I know you will be nervous, but just rejoice in all of the wonderful friendships and memories you have made with your fellow competitors and relax with pride because you did your absolute best! When I was waiting to hear my name called for Top 15, I was not very nervous; I was just optimistic. As names kept getting called and spots left in the Top 15 began to narrow, I had to accept the fact that I might not have made the Top 15, and
I was okay because the experience had been so amazing. Then, suddenly, at the 14th spot, my name was called, and I was thrilled beyond belief; I had to hold back the tears! As I was waiting to go back on stage to compete in swimsuit, I had no nerves, just excitement! I knew what an honor it was to have made it that far. While anticipating the top 10 announcements, I was just relieved I had made it onto the stage at all. My dress had a malfunction just before the parade of gowns, and it took all of the chaperones to get it fixed! Talk about avoiding a meltdown! When I heard my name called as a Top 5 finalist, I was so amazed and proud of myself. This time, I couldn’t hold back the tears! When it was time to answer my on-stage question, I was not nervous. I really enjoy expressing my opinion and point-of-view on issues, and I liked the challenge of doing it in front of such a large crowd. Just try to face your question with an open mind!
All I wanted to do was cry. It’s such an emotional release when your biggest dream comes true! I will never forget that feeling.
The decision was completely out of our hands at this point. You will be focused in on the moment. You will not be aware of any sound around you but that of Beau’s voice as you anxiously wait to see whose name is called as first runner up. When I realized I’d won, I knew my life had been forever changed for the better. I could not believe any of it was actually happening; it was a pinch-meI’m-dreaming feeling. All I wanted to do was cry. It is such an emotional release when your biggest dream has just come true. I will never forget that feeling! For me, pageant weekend was the culmination of my battle with negative self-esteem. It was the weekend that I made some of the best friendships of my life, and it was also the most memorable weekend I have had in all of my eighteen years. For me, pageant weekend was the time where I was chosen for the most life-impacting, amazing job ever, that of Miss Alabama Teen USA 2013!
Rehearsals can be intimidating, but if you pay attention to Dr. Don and make sure you’re not talking while he’s talking, you’ll be fine.”

It is not necessary to spend a fortune on an interview outfit, swimsuit, or evening gown. It is more important to select outfits that make you feel confident, that best suit your body type and personality.
TOP FIVE: Q&A TID BITS TO HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY HOW MANY CONTESTANTS WILL I COMPETE WITH? You
can expect to be on stage with between 30 and 50 young ladies in your division.
WILL I HAVE TO LEARN A DANCE ROUTINE?
No. While our opening number is exciting and entertaining, you won’t need to possess any dance skills. It’s going to be more of a high fashion runway than a choreographed performance.
WILL I WEAR MY BANNER FOR THE WHOLE PAGEANT?
No, you will only wear your banner during swimsuit and evening gown. You will not wear it during opening number or interviews.
WHEN WILL I GET TO SEE MY PARENTS? Family
members may come with you to registration and will have the opportunity to meet with contestants after Friday night’s performance.
HOW LONG DO THE SHOWS USUALLY LAST?
The preliminary show will last for about two hours and the final show will last for about two and a half hours.

TOP FIVE: BODY TIPS Never in a million years did I think I would win a swimsuit award! I had been competing in pageants for years and never came anywhere near that award, so when it happened this year I was stunned! Even though I knew I had worked really hard, I couldn’t believe it! I think what surprised me most was how different my preparation was this year than any of time before! During the swimsuit competition judges aren’t only looking for a great body, but for someone that feels so comfortable in their own skin. I truly believe working out and eating right makes you feel that way about yourself. LIFESTYLE I worked closely with Angelo Frasier and he helped me change my lifestyle instead of putting me on some crash diet that I would get sick of in two weeks!

THE RPM GIRLS WANT YOU TO LOOK & FEEL AS FIT AS POSSIBLE!
SMALL CHANGES What seemed to make the biggest difference was not running on the treadmill anymore, but walking at a brisk pace and incline for 20 minutes before any other exercise. I saw the difference it made in my thighs and glutes immediately.
FOUR
MIND-SET Angelo made working out something I wanted to do rather than something I felt like I had to do. Every time I left the gym I felt great about myself. And although feeling great about your body and looking great is important to compete in a pageant, it’s just as important in life post competition!

If you don’t want to spring for a professional shoot, all you really need is a photo of decent quality that someone else has taken of you. Just make sure it has good lighting and shows off your best features. If you are a teen, we suggest picking a youthful and fun photo for your head shot.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE A WEEKEND OF FUN!
THE DETAILS Pageant weekend runs like a well-oiled machine thanks to the efforts of Pam Earhart and her eager crew of chaperones and runners, and a schedule to rival all schedules.
Prior to pageant weekend, it is important for each contestant to fully understand that all of the necessary papers, documents, photos, forms, ad pages, and fees must be in to the pageant office prior to the deadlines. This is a huge help to RPM and helps ensure a seamless pageant weekend. The fun really begins when contestants check in at registration on the Friday of Pageant Weekend. Your friends and family are more than welcome to register with you. Once you check in, you will receive your registration package with important information about the weekend. Contestants’ hotel accommodations for Friday night are included in their sponsorship fee. Parents and guests may choose to reserve a room at the host hotel as well, and
