Global Banking Institution
Overview Barclays Capital—one of the world’s oldest and most renowned financial institutions, with offices throughout the Americas, Mexico and Canada—required an online solution for fulfilling corporate stationery, presentation materials, tabs and specialty papers. The solution had to facilitate variable data for invitations, envelopes, business cards and stationery, with translations, all printed-on-demand within 24 to 48 hours of approval, and it had to be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. After a very careful screening and proposal process, Print by Premier + More was selected as the resource to deliver the solution. Edward Sanders of Print by Premier + More, a division of Premier Supplies, put together a handpicked team of consummate professionals to develop, program and deliver the Barclays solution for all of its very diverse groups within 60 days of being awarded the print-solution contract.

Programming the Technology Calling upon their experience and talent in preflight, workflow and production, the consortium of industry experts assembled by Print by Premier + More developed a corporate store technology as the basis for the solution. The system was designed to make it easy for the client/consumer to use and also simple for the printer to produce the work. The system would use true type fonts, real-time PDF’s and a true workflow interface to monitor each step of the process while providing instantaneous information to the consumer/approver. As the system developed, it became an extension of the corporate guidelines, with an automatic ability to kern and adjust the leading of characters within the templates and products as required. This ability eliminated the need for custom, time-consuming, offline typesetting—with their associated design tweaking and approvals—improving the service level expectations for the clients.
Implementing the Solution After meeting with the lead print consultant of Barclays, a comprehensive plan was developed to launch the various brands in stages. The process would start with Barclays Capital, followed by Barclays Wealth, and then all of the presentation and marketing materials. The system would have the look and feel of Barclays’ own Intranet, providing an appeal similar to what was being used internally by various groups. Training manuals were made available as very simple screen captures, including step-by-step information explaining how to design, proof, approve and order (DPAO™) within the system. Online demonstrations via GoToMeeting® were demonstrated to the groups, in addition to in-house training.
The Reaction - Within a few weeks, the feedback included: •“Why didn’t we do this sooner?” •“This is so easy and simple to use!” •“Wow! We can track all aspects of production and have real-time information!” •“The proofs and edit controls are awesome; eliminate mistakes, saving time & money.” •“This system is absolutely breathtaking—makes our jobs extremely easy.” •“Print by Premier + More lived up to its promise of the best solution we’ve ever seen!”
The Conclusion Barclays successfully launched a national print procurement, proofing, inventory and corporate store. The company could rest assured its brand image and level of service to all of its business units were consistently handled 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Costs, which had previously fluctuated by region (due to volumes), are now the same. Quality is identical across all groups and regions by using the same source. And shipping costs to the tri-state area of New Jersey, New York & Connecticut are eliminated by using the Premier Supplies fleet of trucks, which deliver supplies and printed products to that region’s locations. Locations outside of the tri-state region are provided shipping through Barclays’ FedEx® account, with a real-time punch-out based on weights provided real time freight costs.
