Competing yachts range in length from 20ft to 50ft. Yachts compete in 5 divisions consisting of 4 monohull divisions and 1 multihull division using performance based handicaps (PBH) for scoring. Races are held from February to November on the weekend. The social aspect is promoted through a post-race BBQ, drinks, raffles and results back at the hosting club.

RQYS FAQs Why is membership important?
Are there any implications if I use RQYS regularly but do not join?
Membership is the lifeblood of the Squadron. The clubs fundamental purpose is to provide activities, facilities, social programs and training in accordance with the needs of members. To remain financially viable in the long run and to deliver these activities, it is essential (and Club Policy) that all regular users of the Squadron subscribe to some form of membership.
First and foremost visitors are very welcome to RQYS. However, once a visitor becomes a regular visitor they need to become a financial member or otherwise there are some serious consequences: • • • •
How do I become a member? Simply fill in the membership application form (available online and from the Reception Desk) and send it with payment to the Squadron, if you cannot find a proposer and seconder please contact the office so that we may help you. Your completed form will be presented firstly to Membership Committee (who meet on the first Thursday of every month) and then through General Committee (who meet on the last Thursday of every month) for approval. You will then be notified of your acceptance to membership and be invited to a New Members Welcome night upon your approval. Membership intakes are normally passed monthly depending on demand.
Firstly, visitors must be signed in by financial members. If a visitor is not signed in, or is signed in by an un-financial member, then this contravenes our liquor licence and exposes the Squadron and its staff to excessive fines, penalties and, in extreme cases, loss of licence. If a visitor exceeds six visits per year then they are not complying with the Squadron’s Constitution. If a visitor sails regularly without membership status, then their skipper is in breach of the YA Racing Rules of Sailing. This may lead to the boat being disqualified from the race. Furthermore, if the visitor is not a Yachting Australia member (a benefit of Club membership) then they do not have Yachting Australia Personal Accident Insurance
The visitor will also be enjoying utilising a facility that costs several million dollars per annum to operate and the cost impact will be worn inequitably by those who do subscribe to membership
How can I find out what events are happening?
If you would like to discuss your membership options or have any queries with regard to your application form, please contact our Membership Administrator.
The Squadron communicates with its members through various media:
As a member, when can I use the Clubhouse?
• • • •
Members have full access to the Clubhouse facilities 7 days per week. The opening hours do change from time to time and are published on the website.
Weekly eNews- you can opt in on our homepage or simply ask to subscribe Monthly Squadron Events Calendar – this usually gets sent out to members along with their monthly account statements. Notice Boards in the RQ Bar, Marina and Sailing Academy. Seasonal Magazine ‘Mainsheet’ – a must for all members which includes events, shared stories, points of interest and general articles.
What insurance cover do I receive as a RQYS member?
How can I become more involved?
Membership of the Squadron automatically entitles you to be either a Silver or Youth Member with Yachting Australia depending on your membership category; these memberships come with Personal Accident Insurance which covers personal accidents while boating or on yacht club premises. More information can be found at their website www.yachting.org.au
There are many ways for a member to become more involved with the Squadron ranging from WAGS, racing, cruising, social events and volunteering. If you would like to experience more, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.

130 years of sailing history
RQYS History The Squadron’s history dates back to 1885 when it was founded as the Brisbane Sailing Club, later to be known as the Queensland Yachting Club.
Sailing quickly became a prominent sport in Queensland and within a few years competition was established with Sydneysiders for an inter-colonial sailing race in 22 footers. The late 1890’s and early 1900’s saw the Commodoreship of W.A. Douglas and Thomas Welsby, two great Queensland stalwarts, who between them oversaw club matters for some twenty years. Both are remembered by Moreton Bay beacons. In 1902, His Majesty King George VII bestowed the title of Royal on our club. The club acquired freehold premises in the city with sailing facilities in the lower reaches of the Brisbane River in the 1950’s. It was at this time that dinghy racing really developed in the club. Fleets of 30 and upwards in a class were common. Many fine yachtsmen grew from this competition. In 1961 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approved a name change to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. The Squadron opened its premises at Manly Harbour in September 1964 and has continued to develop and improve its facilities to what is now regarded as one of the premier yacht clubs in Australia, catering for sailing and power boating enthusiast as well as social activities. The Squadron has been represented at every Olympic Games in either competitor participation or management since 1956. In 1972, Squadron Members John Cuneo, Tom Anderson and John Shaw won the gold medal in the Dragon class, In 2008 Daniel Fitzgibbon took home the silver medal in the Skud 18 at the Paralympic Games, and in 2012, Squadron Members Mat Belcher and Malcolm Page won the gold medal in the 470 dinghy class.
