“Happy Birthday, Mr. President”— rare program from JFK’s memorable Madison Square Garden gala, signed by Marilyn Monroe, Maria Callas, Peter Lawford, and more

694. Marilyn Monroe and Celebrities Signed JFK Birthday Program. Extraordinary original program for President

John F. Kennedy’s famous birthday celebration held at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962, titled ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President,’ two pages, 8.25 x 10.5, signed on the front in ink by Marilyn Monroe, Peter Lawford, Maria Callas, Jack Benny, Jimmy Durante, Henry Fonda, Bobby Darin, Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Peggy Lee, Harry Belafonte, Shirley MacLaine, and Diahann Carroll. In fine condition, with an unobtrusive central vertical fold.

The signatures on this program were obtained by Frank Lauer, who went to the event as the ‘camera bag-carrier’ for a friend who freelanced for the New Brunswick newspaper The Home News. Issued a press pass, Lauer had free rein of Madison Square Garden and its backstage/basement. He was stuck by the lack of security—the president walked right past him, the celebrity guests were milling about, and he was able to stand there in the hallway, with program in hand, and have all these attendees to sign it. He is also seen in the backgrounds of many of the photographs his friend took that day. Lauer was particularly taken by Monroe and her incredibly striking, practically see-through dress—she had to be sewn into it and she could not sit down. He later reported that she was as beautiful or more beautiful in person than she was on film, an unusual quality for a movie star.

On the evening of May 19, 1962, 17,000 people filled Madison Square Garden to celebrate the birthday of President John F. Kennedy. The star-studded gala featured appearances and musical numbers by many noted celebrities including Maria Callas, Peggy Lee, and Diahann Carroll. The song that stole the show, however, was Marilyn Monroe’s now-infamous, sultry rendition of ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President.’ Wearing a dazzling, skintight dress, the spotlight was on Monroe as she delivered the breathy number to the thrilled crowd. President Kennedy was then presented with a massive birthday cake, and he humorously remarked: ‘I can now retire from politics after having had Happy Birthday sung to me in such a sweet, wholesome way.’ A rare memento from the historic occasion, this is just the second Monroe-signed JFK birthday program we have seen. Starting Bid $1000

The Hollywood holy grail—oversized portraits of the main Wizard of Oz cast, all inscribed to producer Mervyn LeRoy’s assistant

697. Wizard of Oz Set of (5) Oversized Signed

Photographs. Absolutely extraordinary collection of five original vintage glossy 10 x 13 doubleweight promo photos of the key Wizard of Oz figures in character—Judy Garland as Dorothy, Frank Morgan as the Wizard, Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow, and Jack Haley as the Tin Man—individually signed in fountain pen by the subjects, with all but Garland adding an inscription to Barron Polan, assistant to Wizard of Oz producer Mervyn LeRoy. Each photograph has a “1939 Loew’s Inc.” copyright notice to the lower left corner, and a typed caption on the reverse. In overall fine condition. The inscriptions read: “Sincerely, Judy Garland”; “To Barron, with very best wishes, Frank Morgan, ‘The Wizard’”; “To ‘Barron,’ With kindest regards, Bert Lahr”; “To Barron, Best wishes, Ray Bolger”; and “To Barron—With sincere best wishes—Jack Haley.” Autographs on these iconic poses are exceedingly rare to begin with—we have only ever seen one authentic Garland-signed Dorothy portrait (as an 8 x 10), and maybe three Wizards (all 8 x 10s). They are unheard of in this size, and their direct association with the Wizard of Oz producer’s assistant makes them that much more remarkable. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Starting Bid $5000

Previous consignor noted that the magazine originates from the estate of David Sutton, who served as Wayne’s makeup man. Starting Bid $200

Unprecedented pair of ‘Player Sample’ Nike Air Jordan 1 sneakers, signed by a rookie Michael Jordan

767. Michael Jordan: Air Jordan 1 ‘Player Sample’ Sneakers Signed as a Rookie. Pristine pair of unworn

Nike Air Jordan 1 (Chicago) ‘Player Sample’ basketball sneakers, with inner collar lining to each stamped with size, 13 (left) and 13 ½ (right), and coding, “850204–TYPS,” and the right sneaker tongue signed in black felt tip by Michael Jordan during his rookie season. The coding number “850204” refers to the date of production, indicating that these sneakers were made in 1985 between the months of February (02) and April (04). The acronym “TYPS” stands for ‘Tong Yang Player Sample,’ which places these sneakers as ‘Player Samples,’ and that they were produced from the ‘Tong Yang’ factory; such examples were made in extremely limited quantities and were never available in retail sporting goods stores. As such, these Air Jordan 1 player samples are similar to those presented to Jordan for his personal inspection, fitting, and approval. Includes white and black laces, and the original red-and-black Nike shoebox with cover; the box is marked as “4280, Air Jordan, W/BLK/ RED,” and bears a size “USA 13” label. Crucial to the authenticity of these sneakers are the mismatched sizes of 13 and 13 ½, as Jordan wore a slightly larger sneaker on his right foot throughout his career. Boxes containing both 13 and 13 ½ Air Jordan 1 sneakers were exclusively made for their legendary namesake, and were thus never available at public retail stores. Also of consequence is the “850204–TYPS” coding, which correlates to both Jordan’s rookie season and a decidedly narrow window of ‘Player Sample’ production. Deadstock examples of Air Jordan 1 “850204–TYPS” remain extremely rare, with those autographed by a 22-year-old Michael Jordan undoubtedly placed in a realm unique to the Air Jordan canon and the market entire. The sneakers are in very fine, never-worn condition; the shoebox is in very good to fine condition, with various scuffs, bends, and creases.

Accompanied by full letters of authenticity from PSA/DNA and Beckett Authentication Services, and by a detailed letter of provenance from the original recipient/owner, who affirms that he received these sneakers from an agent at ProServ, a sports management firm that represented Jordan at the start of his career. Starting Bid $10000
