Baroque painter (1578–1660) known for his religious works and mythological frescoes. ALS in Italian, signed “Fran’co Albani,” one page, 7.5 x 11, no date. 1863) who takes a place in the first rank of painters in the Romantic tradition and whose mastery of color and technique inspired both the Impressionist and Symbolist schools. ALS in French, signed “Eug. Delacroix,” one page, 5.25 x 8, December 2, 1851. Untranslated letter to a gentleman referencing an art exhibition in Bordeaux. In very good to fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge, and a short split to the end of the central horizontal fold. Starting Bid $200

Eiffel,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.5, personal letterhead, December 24, 1887. Letter to the ‘editor-in-chief’ of the Figaro newspaper during the early stages of the construction of the Eiffel Tower, making explicit reference to it. In part (translated): “Allow me to have recourse to your kindness to ask you to make known to the public that since the beginning of the work of the tower at the Champ de Mars, either during the building of the foundations, or during the assembly, no single accident has occurred that resulted in any deaths. The only seriously injured person we had was able to resume work.” An autograph addition by Eiffel at the bottom of the first page directs the letter to the editor of Figaro. In fine condition. Letters by Eiffel that refer to his most famous building are surprisingly rare. Starting Bid $300

and highly desirable matte-finish 5.5 x 3.5 postcard photo of Matisse meeting Nana Winding, with one of his works visible in the background, signed and inscribed in French in fountain pen, (translated): “To Mrs. Nana Winding, cordially, Henri Matisse, 23/5 39.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a 7 x 5 pearl-finish enlargement of the photo, annotated on the reverse in type and in Winding’s hand. Winding was a friend and occasional subject of other artists, including Pierre Bonnard and Marie Vassilieff. A rarely seen photo with a close personal association. Starting Bid $300

Boldly penned handwritten letter, in full (translated): “I am quite upset that I was unable to take advantage of your good thought, but I was away (which I rarely am) and I was unaware of your letter until my return, but I will not deprive myself of the pleasure of coming to see your Cezanne exhibition. rare 5.25 x 8.5 Boudoir cabinet card photo of a youthful, cleanshaven Remington standing in a half-length pose with his hands in his pockets, signed and inscribed in black ink to journalist and author Julian Ralph, “To me ‘old pard’ Julian! Frederic Remington.” In fine condition. Julian Ralph (1853–1903) was a very successful journalist who collaborated with Remington on many articles published in Harper’s Weekly and other periodicals of the late 19th century. Signed photographs of Remington are very rare, with this being the first we’ve ever had. Starting Bid $300

501. Christopher Wren Autograph Endorsement. Distinguished and influential British architect (1632–1723) who played a leading role in the rebuilding of London following the devastating Great Fire of 1666, and whose St. Paul’s Cathedral takes a place among the greatest designs in the history of architecture. Rare autograph endorsement, “Chr. Wren,” on the reverse of a manuscript receipt in Latin, 9.5 x 4.75, October 15, 1707, relating to a payment made to Wren during the reign of Queen Anne, signed below by Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax. Endorsed on the reverse in bold black ink, “Oct. 15. 1707, Received the full contents of this Indent’e, Chr. Wren,” who adds a large swoosh in the space below. In very good to fine condition, with a small area of repaired paper loss to the bottom edge, and old mounting remnants along one edge of the reverse. Starting Bid $300
