WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS A SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) The following rules are as follows: • that all perpendiculars or orthogonals meet at the central vanishing point, • that all parallels have a common vanishing point, • and that equal dimensions diminish progressively as they recede in space.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogenous space is space produced by construction, that is all its elements, points joined within are determinations of position, possessing no independent content of their own outside this relation. ‘The geometrical concept of homogeneity’ is the possibility of being able to draw similar figures in all directions and magnitudes at every point in its space.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1. I believe this view is able to capture the space of the inhabitants without too much of the given structure obstructing the space.

Perspective 2. I believe this view was able to center on the concept of the city being surveilled by the world beyond it, clearly indicating where the subject of the scene is.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Perspective 1. The scene I have chosen is heavily influenced by the lines “...clay packs the room to the ceiling in the text provided. This inspired me to create a scene which captures the dark and confined description of the underground city. The areas where light exists I have highlighted with the fire. The background and ceiling are made of dirt and worms to exaggerate location, and a small house with relatively small characters to capture the grim and even debilitating tone of the city.

Perspective 2. This scene aimed to suggest the awareness of the world beyond the underground city of its existence . The eye represents the narrator who tells the story and the stairs towards the exit exaggerate the distance between the two worlds.

WEEK 10 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic refers to arts such as painting or sculpture that depend on the direct contact of the author for authenticity whereas allographic refers to arts such as music or theatre where the work exists in many copies and can be reproduced without the author directly intervening in the piece of art. Allographic also operates on the basis of interpretation, and the standard of performance or product changes constantly each time.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Where historically the representation of the architectural city was simply based on the city as a ‘tangible site on the landscape’ and a ‘series of representations... based on static conventions’, the presence of modern technologies, information exchange - the overall changes in society today - have created a condition in which the urban site is no longer simply geographic. Thus, to compromise for these changes, new representational techiniques are necessary where old ones no longer suffice.

CITY OF THE DEAD: ARGIA

The isonometric notations aimed to add another layer of meaning and complexity to the narrative of the perspectives. In addition to visually representing what is present in the perspectives through the characters, the notations aimed to indicate what is not visible. This is done with the custom key of the Staircase and the darkness and heavy mood that exists beyond the scenes. Key Perspective 1 Perspective 2 Light and Dark Light Mood Heavy Mood 0
