OXO HUSH!

P ROBLEM As a point of tradition, smoke alarms are objects that are truly at the mercy of accountants, engineers, and low cost point sales. They are objects of legal necessity, and as a result are so often not granted the design investigation that we give to so many other products.

How might we make these objects that are typically overlooked, something to be admired & sought after?

D EFININ G THE BRAND OXO is dedicated to provide innovative products that make everyday living easier. Their “question everything process & relentless attention to detail uncover the best solutions for lifes everyday tasks. Keeping their philosophy in mind, along with their choice of materials among their OXO On line of products I came up with a design solution that could resonate with their brand identity. D EFININ G THE MARKET OXO has been recognized globally for not only how its products benefit end users, but also for its sensible business model.

I studied the market to find a place for the OXO smoke alarm. The balance between technology and price could give customers an opportunity to install an OXO smoke alarm in every room in their homes. Since it’s required as per US law.

FORM The form study for the smoke alarm was taken a step further to create the OXO Fire Extinguisher. A similar form language was maintained to make them cohesive. OXO products are known for their handles / grips and even have a “Good Grip” line of products catered towards Arthiritis victims. Hence, the Fire Extinguisher dedicates much of its real-estate to its grip to maintain OXO’s reputation and brand identity.

1 BATTERY Some professionals forget to charge their tools due to packed schedules.

2 HEAT & WEIGHT Hot and heavy tools tamper with their control.

3 HANDLES / CORDS Fixed handle sizes and cords obstruct their flow.

When one handle runs out of juice, the spare one is ready to go. This way the barber / stylist is rest assured about the battery life.

The twin handle solution also resolves the challenge with entangled cords, offers professionals with seperate handle sizes to work with, and prevents each handle from over heating.

The prototype was mocked up to get a tangable feel of the final concept and was kept white to test how light would flow along its surface.
