Welcome to

the royal south australian yacht squadron Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious yachting and boating clubs.

Sitting on and around a totally sheltered basin just inside the mouth of the Port River at Adelaide’s Outer Harbor, the Squadron boasts a fully-serviced marina with many related services within the basin.

RSAYS has a long and illustrious history in the South Australian yachting scene dating back to its founding in 1869 and continues to play a significant role in South Australian sporting and wider community life.

The Squadron has a strong heritage in keelboat racing, conducting midweek twilight racing in the summer and weekend races throughout the entire year. Cruising and social events are also a very large part of club life with numerous events scheduled each year by a group of enthusiastic club members. Facilities for members, their guests and families are magnificent, with our beautiful and historic clubhouse having recently undergone a spectacular internal modernisation while retaining its exterior charm.

Welcome

The clubhouse boasts full dining and bar facilities and a most popular outdoor Quarterdeck overlooking the picturesque marina. As well as providing a haven for members it is also one of the area’s premier function venues. Weddings, engagement parties, anniversaries, business meetings and fund-raising dinners can all be individually designed to suit your needs. Whatever the occasion the staff at Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron look forward to welcoming you.

A Brief History

History

The Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron (RSAYS) began its life as the South Australian Yacht Club (SAYC) on 5 November 1869, with its first race being held on 1 January the following year. Four competing yachts measuring between 13 and 19 feet took part in that opening event. The Squadron has come a very long way since those early days and now boasts more than 1,200 members!

But in 1924 it was decided to move to what is our current site at Outer Harbor. Though reasons for the move have never become entirely clear, it was one that nobody associated with the club has ever regretted.

The club was granted royal patronage by Her Majesty Queen Victoria on 25 October 1890, and has proudly borne that title ever since. The Admiralty warrant authorising wearing of the Blue Ensign was dated 4 November 1890.

In those early days, though, amenities were minimal and other than a solitary power point with an electric kettle, there were no catering facilities.

The Squadron originally prospered on a parcel of land and water on the Birkenhead side of the Port River, adjacent to where the Birkenhead Bridge was constructed many years later. 6 | www.rsays.com.au

Meetings of committees and the general body of members were held in sundry hotels — the Clubhouse, Ship Inn and Largs Pier. In fact, right until 1968 the social life of the Squadron was mostly concentrated elsewhere, until the decision

was taken to close the clubrooms in the city and concentrate all activities at Outer Harbor. Major improvements to the infrastructure have taken place over the ensuing years to ensure the clubhouse experience is one to savour for members and guests. Protection for moored vessels was also inadequate in those early days and moored craft regularly broke free and damaged each other. Fortunately, such disastrous incidents are now nothing more than ancient history and members benefit from the best in modern facilities. The Squadron is an old organisation which has undergone corporate rejuvenation in the last few

years. It is strong and secure, continuing to provide a unique and notable component of yachting in South Australia. The same can be said of its facilities, with extensions to the marina and a wonderful interior refurbishment of the clubhouse ensuring the Squadron is equipped to meet the modern needs of its members and guests in the 21st century. While never an organisation to rest on its laurels, the future of the Squadron looks particularly bright, especially with the club having purchased its premises from Portscorp, the successor to the old Harbors Board, in 2001 and thereby securing its own long-term destiny. www.rsays.com.au | 7

Marina Facilities

Marina

The Squadron has a fully-serviced marina with more than 200 marina berths ranging from 10 to 30 metres, each with power and water utilities. In addition, there are 130 hardstand berths for trailable vessels and dry stands for sport boats housed on jinkers, all with 24-hour security access. RSAYS moorings are also available to members at Edithburgh, Stansbury and Port Vincent, particularly useful for those members interested in enjoying the pleasures of cruising. There is 24-hour access to diesel fuel available off the Northern Maintenance Pontoon with high flow and standard flow pumps. A swipe card facility is situated at the berth for payment. The Squadron offers slipping up to 18 tonne for mono and multihull vessels at very competitive

prices. Work may be carried out by the owner or a sub-contractor that has completed a slipway induction at the club’s office. The on-site 3.5-tonne Sheet Pile Wharf Crane is used to lift small to medium sports boats in and out of the basin. This crane can also be used to lift engines or any other heavy equipment from vessels. There is also a Mast Crane at members’ disposal and the Squadron has two maintenance pontoons situated on the Northern and Southern banks.

A dual launching ramp is located on the northern side of the property. A launching tractor is also supplied for members’ use. There is also a level rise slip for Etchells or other sport boats that are stored on jinkers. Finished sailing for the day? A sail drying area is located on the lawn adjacent to the slipway. Trolleys and storage carts are available for members requiring transportation between the car and their vessel. Alternatively, small, medium and large sail lockers, dinghy storage, jinker and trailer storage facilities are available for hire at an annual rate basis. In short, when it comes to launching, storage, maintenance or your daily sailing requirements, the Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron has the needs of everyone covered. Sailing Program To many sailors, there is nothing to beat the buzz and the thrill of competition, be it in single-handed boats or as part of a crew. If you fall into this category, then Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron is the club for you as we are able to offer year-round competitive sailing in a variety of categories. The waters in and around the Port River are not only regarded as some of the best in the state, but in Australia as a whole. Keelboat racing is a major focus and proud tradition of the Squadron, with more than 100 races scheduled each year in numerous dedicated series. This diversity offers members and their guests a wide choice of sailing and racing options including Point Score Series using AMS or Personal Handicap systems, Etchells One Design, Offshore and Inshore Series. The Squadron is the home of the Adelaide Etchells Fleet, which is why we were so proud to be chosen to host the Australian Etchells Championships in 2015. The Fleet enjoys racing each Saturday, from October to April in tight racing and friendly atmosphere off the water over a drink or two.

ailable in 016 and his offer.

Two Divisions of keelboats race on Saturdays over summer, and monthly on Sundays in winter. From May through to August there is a Combined Winter Series run in conjunction with the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia. The Winter Series offers the chance not only of year-round racing, but the chance to keep body and boat in trim for the summer racing season. Typically the combined Winter Series fleet sees 35-plus boats out on the water every second Sunday. Squadron racing provides a great training ground for those intending to compete in the Sydney to Hobart or Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race. Amongst its members, RSAYS boasts winners (2010, 2013 & 2014) in both these iconic events as well as crew aboard the 2008-9 Volvo Ocean Race winner Ericsson 4 and the 1983 America’s Cup

winner, Australia II. There are special inshore Racing Series for Multihulls and one especially for prospective women skippers with dreams of owning their own boat. For the more leisurely sailor, the wonderfullynamed Sternchaser Gentlemen’s Race offers a change of pace on a Friday afternoon. Held every second Friday afternoon from 3pm, there is a friendly and social gathering after each race back at Jimmy’s Bar and on the Quarterdeck. As any sailor would know, traditional après race debriefings are essential to skill development. Twilight Racing is held each Wednesday night during Daylight Saving, starting at 1800 hours.

www.rsays.com.au | 15

The races are a great way to get back into sailing if you feel you are a bit rusty on the ropes, and want to get back into Saturday sailing. Markers and beacons are used and racing takes place in the Port River and extends out of the harbor and beyond the channel. Great for cruising, racing boats and multihulls, Twilights are divided into two series, those before and after Christmas, with races taking approximately one-and-a-half hours. Apart from the friendly competition, the main drawcard is the great social opportunity following the race, a

16 | www.rsays.com.au

buffet dinner prepared by the Squadron’s highlyregarded Chef and the Food and Beverage team. Presentations are made to the winning boats during the dinner and there is also a prize awarded at the end of the season to the overall winner. A club with as impressive a pedigree as RSAYS is going to be able to offer some pretty special trophies with equally illustrious histories. Take the Bundey Cup. Held in late October, it heralds the start of the summer sailing season and boasts a trophy valued at more than $100,000. No, the winner does not get to keep it (or to take it home for that matter), though there are plenty of photo opportunities! One of the major events in the Squadron calendar is the annual Adelaide to Port Lincoln race in February, run with our friends at Port Lincoln Yacht Club.

South Australia’s premier ocean racing event sees 50 to 60 boats leave Outer Harbor on Friday (cruisers at 10am, and the racing fleets at about 3pm) to compete in a 156-nautical mile race that takes them south west to Marion Reef at the foot of York Peninsula along the foot to the spectacular Cape Spencer then north west past Wedge and Thistle Islands and Dangerous Reef to the welcome of Port Lincoln nestled on Boston Bay. For more details, visit: https://www.facebook.com/adelaidetolincoln After recharging the batteries, the choice is either a leisurely sail home, or stay on for more enjoyable competition in the Lincoln Week Regatta. Easter is a special time of year, no more so than at RSAYS. The long weekend sees cruising or racing sailor and power boat owners from the Squadron

making the way over to picturesque Port Vincent for the annual Easter Regatta. A seaside holiday destination for many years, Port Vincent boasts beautiful clean beaches and is only 37 nautical miles by sea from Outer Harbor, compared to some 195km by road. Members can choose the convenience of the marina facilities at Port Vincent or opt for the traditional moorings, anchoring in the bay. A family event, with a wonderful atmosphere, there is racing every day followed (and preceded) by a number of enjoyable social events such as a BYO dinner party on the Marina Lawns and a Dinghy Rowing Derby (not a misprint!) There is even time set aside to enjoy the tradition Easter service at St. Neot’s, opposite the wharf. www.rsays.com.au | 17

18 | www.rsays.com.au

A prize presentation takes place on the Sunday evening, with Monday seeing a time trial event across Gulf St Vincent with racing vessels setting sail at a time of their choosing. It is worth noting that you do not need to own a boat to take part in the Squadron’s extensive sailing program. The Squadron website maintains a list of ‘crew looking for a boat’, and a list of ‘boats looking for crew’. If you’re interested in crewing, even on a casual basis, or need crew, please contact the sailing office.

From principal race officers and on water support boats through to Committee and Board Members, our Squadron would not survive without the many members who dedicate their valuable time. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or for more information please contact our Sailing Office on (08) 8341 8600 or email sailing@rsays.com.au

Regattas

20 | www.rsays.com.au

Regattas and Event Hosting Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron is highly regarded by those seeking a venue for regattas and major sailing events and has staged numerous prestigious championships over the years. These events are always very rewarding, with the associated media coverage raising the profile of the Squadron, which is able to showcase its facilities to a wider audience. Leading sailors get to experience all that is good about RSAYS, while for spectators it provides the opportunity to see some of the sport’s best at close quarters. The Squadron played host to the Australian Etchells Championships in 2015, drawing many favourable comments from organisers and participants. It was a wonderful event, featuring a crack field containing no fewer than five world champions. Legendary Olympic and America’s Cup sailor John Bertrand and his crew on Triad took out the seventh and final race to win overall on countback in a thrilling finale to a wonderful week of racing. His latest success coming at the age of 69, Bertrand’s triumph was a reminder that the wonderful sport of sailing can be enjoyed by participants of all ages with desire and skill frequently winning out over advancing years. The Squadron has a dedicated and hard-working race management team who have considerable experience to draw upon and it is this professionalism that enables organizers of important events on the national and international stage to feel assured that their event is in good hands. With fantastic facilities in the clubhouses, the Squadron is a delightful place to spend downtime and the gateway to some of the best sailing waters to be found anywhere. www.rsays.com.au | 21

Cruising Social sailing, or cruising, plays a big part in the life of the Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron. Yes, we offer every encouragement for competitive sailors to pursue their goals and are hugely thrilled whenever our members taste success. But not everyone dreams about standing on the top step of the Olympic podium, gazing down at a gold medal around their neck and singing along to Advance Australia Fair.

Cruising

An increasing number of people have discovered the enjoyment of sailing for pleasure, which in its own way can be as equally rewarding a way to spend time on the water.

Boats offer a freedom like no other. Simply check the weather forecast, invite some friends along, stock up with food (and drink!) and take off for the There are others who value the camaraderie, fun and day, a weekend or even longer. Cruising presents an opportunity for sociable sailing with the chance to friendship that sailing can bring and they are made discover new destinations and enjoy new experiences. to feel equally welcome at RSAYS.

www.rsays.com.au | 23

24 | www.rsays.com.au

The club has a number of group-orientated cruising events scheduled throughout the year where members either sail together or meet up at the destination. Primarily they are yachtsmen, but powerboat owners too are welcome. All share the common goal of boating for pleasure and embrace seamanship and fellowship, one of the Squadron’s raisons d’être. Around half a dozen longer cruises a year are enjoyed to such destinations as Kangaroo Island on the North Coast, or across to Port Lincoln. Regular cruises also take place to Gulf St Vincent. Sailing times can very – on occasion 5 to 6 hours or sometimes up to 12 hours. Then it’s time to drop anchor and enjoy some social time, perhaps a barbecue ashore or a dinner followed by a gettogether on one or more of the boats. Sometimes the group outing can be just a jaunt around the corner - up the river to dinner in Port Adelaide, a barbecue for brunch and a look around the local museums before heading back to the Squadron.

RSAYS has an excellent relationship with our neighbours, each of whom have their own cruising committees. There are five other keelboat clubs within a 20-mile radius and regularly the groups liaise and meet up socially. Cruising members at the Squadron are never short of friends! They also take part in some of the club’s racing calendar, such as the Sternchasers racing, which is a handicap event. Any non-spinnaker event, the cruising boats are likely to be involved. There are other cruising events throughout the year such as information evenings, general get-togethers and show and tells - where members get the chance to take a look at other people’s boats. Members go all over the world, often keeping online blogs so fellow cruisers back home can follow their progress.

Junior Sailing

Juniors

The Squadron is proud of its development of the next generation of young sailors, with junior membership having been a feature of the club since 1912. RSAYS aims to cater for all ages, all abilities and to fulfil everyone’s sailing dream, whether it is just to be out on the water having fun or with more of a competitive edge.

a structured pathway for junior sailors, while at the same time an indication that the future of the Squadron is in safe hands as these keen juniors will become full adult members in years to come.

High fliers are provided all the help and support they need should they wish to pursue competitive sailing at a higher level. Many of our members have gone on to achieve representative honours.

There are few things more thrilling for senior Squadron members than seeing the young ones being gripped by the same passion for this wonderful sport that many of them experienced in their formative years. Tradition is very much a part of Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron and this love of the sea is passed down from one generation to the next.

It is a thrill and an honour for a junior to represent their state or country, but it is an equally uplifting experience for the Squadron itself. It means that RSAYS is delivering on its commitment to offer

Junior training at RSAYS follows the syllabus of the Yachting Australia National Small Boat Sailing Scheme. These “J-Squad” training sessions are run on Sundays throughout the year. The scheme aims to make learning to sail a fun and educational process. Great for kids and adults, this course builds confidence to sail and race in most conditions. Prizes and certificates are given out each year at the junior presentation evening held in May. Junior training courses are run in the Squadron’s fleet of Pacers and held in the Port River in good view of parents and siblings. Children need to be at least eight years old and able to swim to be able to join J-Squad.

They learn at their own pace under the guidance of dedicated instructors who love their sport and are skilled sailors in their own right. Two programs offering fortnightly sessions over the summer months on Sunday mornings – one before Christmas and one after – allows for other outside family activities. All abilities are catered for, the structured courses aimed to progress any child from absolute beginner to dedicated racer. Kids being kids, they learn quickly without fear and generally take to the sport like a keen young sailor to water! There is a fun weekend camp away in March for all participants and parents and the opportunity to make many new friends. Courses are available to those who want to build on what they have already learnt and take their sailing experience to a new level. Under the guidance of experienced and professional

32 | www.rsays.com.au

sailing and boating instructors and volunteers, on-water and shore-based courses are conducted throughout the year. All instructors are qualified through Yachting Australia and place an equal importance on the safety of the student and enjoyment of the course to create the perfect environment in which to learn. For the mature student wishing to get into sailing, the courses provide a fun and accessible entry into the sport and provide participants with further opportunity to improve and develop sailing skills and techniques. Learn to sail a dinghy or yacht or to operate a

powerboat, an essential skill to possess if you are considering volunteering as part of the Squadron’s Safety Crew on one of our race days. It’s important to appreciate that even though there may be no training dates scheduled in the calendar, these can be organised on an impromptu basis if there is sufficient interest. Learn to Sail courses are run on demand for adults wishing to learn dinghy sailing. Run by qualified instructors, these consist of four weekly sessions to get you sailing around a triangular short course in the shelter of the River.

Offshore racers are required to undertake a short theory and practical training course and update regularly to qualify to race in offshore events. The Sea Safety and Survival Course (SSSC) required for Category 2 and up races are also run on interest. Visit the Yachting Australia website, www. yachtingaustralia.com.au, to view details of courses, or for more information, call the Squadron direct on (08) 8341 8600 or email sailing@rsays.com.au

Clubhouse The Royal South Australia Yacht Squadron clubhouse is a simply wonderful place to spend some time in the company of good friends enjoying a casual drink, for winding down after sailing or for hosting a special occasion. The clubhouse has undergone a multi-million dollar refurbishment in recent months that has lifted it to a whole new level. In fact, it’s such a wonderful spot that sometimes, however great your love of sailing, it proves very difficult to leave that comfortable seat and take to the water! The atmosphere is relaxed and the ambiance special, with the beautiful new-look building boasting full dining and bar facilities and a most popular outdoor Quarterdeck. 40 | www.rsays.com.au

Clubhouse

Our main dining room upstairs has a magnificent view overlooking the marina. On a beautiful day you may wish to sit outside with friends on the balcony and enjoy a meal, a drink or both. It truly is a special experience.

Downstairs there are three areas for entertaining: the Quarterdeck, again offering spectacular marina views, the informal Jimmy’s Bar and the rustic appeal of the Dinghy Shed.

The dining room is open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and for lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You can order from our À La Carte menu, our Weekly Specials, or ‘go casual’ and order from our Bar Menu.

Jimmy’s Bar is open during daylight saving season for Twilight Racing on Wednesday evenings from 5pm and on Friday nights and weekend race days. Sample menus and current opening times can be viewed on the club website, www.rsays.com.au www.rsays.com.au | 41

Social Activities The Squadron’s House and Social Committee organises a wide range of fun and fantastic social functions. These appeal to many members of the club and create a great opportunity to meet new and current members. RSAYS is a club for those with a love of sailing and a love of live. We appreciate for many in the sailing fraternity the two things go hand in hand and that the clubhouse experience is just as important to a well-rounded club as the events that take place out on the water. Friday night is Squadron member night, offering the perfect opportunity to unwind and prepare for the weekend. Come along with family and friends, enjoy a relaxing drink and then stay for dinner. Equally popular in summer is the Wednesday Twilight after-race buffet. This is always a buzz of

48 | www.rsays.com.au

activity and you don’t have to be in the race to participate in this great club environment. It is also a chance to meet or reconnect with fellow members. The sailing fraternity is a naturally sociable one and anyone joining the Squadron will quickly find they have a new circle of friends. This is facilitated by the hosting of New Members’ Receptions so that those new to the club are made to feel instantly at home. The Squadron holds its annual Opening Day in November, it is a great day of ceremony as well as fun enjoyed by members and their guests. Member events such as the Flag Raising in August followed

by the Commodore’s Ball – a black tie and posh frock event with a three-course dinner and accompanying floor show – are not to be missed. Wine tasting evenings and wine dinners have proved to be very popular and traditional dates in the diary such as Christmas are also enjoyed with relish. Celebrating Christmas in July has also become something of a Squadron tradition. Even if there is nothing scheduled, RSAYS is a wonderful place to spend time relaxing in good company, such is the clubhouse camaraderie. For more information on upcoming events refer to the event calendar or contact the Squadron Office on (08) 8346 8600 or via email: rsays@rsays.com.au
