Letter from the Chair

Paul Clark ’85 Chair

I

’ve come full circle at this College – first as a student, then as a parent and now as the Chair of the Board. Like many, I feel a huge connection to RSGC that continues to strengthen. I’m so honoured to be the Chair of the Board of Governors at the place that helped shape my life and that of my son. I’m proud to call myself a member of the RSGC family. That being said, I “survived” my first year as Chair and am looking forward to entering the second and final year of my term. Past Chair Ruth Woods paved the way for me and I can’t thank her enough for her support and guidance in my first year.

On the heels of the most significant facilities investment in the school’s history, this past summer was spent focusing on several maintenance projects, including a new roof for the gym. The roof also features an incredible solar array donated by the McManus family. The energy generated is getting fed back to the grid and the income received will be directed back to the College. What a wonderful, green way to show innovation! The campus looks outstanding, the “big dig” is now a distant memory, and the teachers and students are taking full advantage of the Black Box theatre, the increased classroom space, the expanded tarmac and the J.S. McCain Field. A special thank you to Michael Barker, Facilities Committee Chair, whose work is invaluable to the members of our community. Cathy Bateman quietly continues her work as Treasurer and Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee, Jim Crossland has been hugely helpful as the Vice-Chair, Peter Furnish eased into his role as Advancement Committee Chair and Bruce Chapple ’87 is doing a fine job in his new role as Nomination and Governance Committee Chair. A big thank you goes out to our retiring Board members, Anthony Caldwell, Carolyn Cullen and Sandy Gibson ’01. We are grateful for your exceptional service to the College. I’m certain, however, that like me, you won’t ever truly leave this wonderful community. As a whole, the Board remains focused on the execution of our newly minted strategic plan, strengthening the school’s already sound

financial position and assisting Stephen and his team in what is a very special year in the school’s history. It’s hard to imagine that the fledging boys’ choir school that was founded at the height of the hippie movement in Toronto is turning 50 years old! Six headmasters, over 2,100 graduates and 50 Carol Services later, Royal St. George’s College has become a tremendous school where boys are celebrated for their differences and prepared for the world beyond the walls of the campus by teachers and staff who truly love and care about them. I look forward to celebrating our past and future potential with our parents, students, teachers, alumni and friends through the 2014/2015 school year. I encourage all of you to attend as many of the 50th Anniversary events as possible as we celebrate 50 years of Georgian pride.

Message from the Headmaster Dear Fellow Georgians,

I

Stephen Beatty ’86 Headmaster

am so proud to be able to report on another successful year at the College during 2013/14. Two projects were central to my work during the year: preparing for the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the College beginning in September 2014 and the first year of implementation of our five-year Strategic Plan. In this way, it was a year of looking back with pride at what was, and looking forward with hope at what could be. Our strategic plan is driven by a central, primary goal to prepare our boys to thrive and lead in a changing world. This primary goal is supported by our enabling goal to foster innovation and excellence by engaging our community and partners. It would be an understatement to say that the world we are preparing our boys for is changing rapidly. It’s essential that we continue to evolve the school to prepare our boys to lead and thrive. Navigating the economic and social transformations ahead for our world will require original thinkers, creativity and social intelligence. It will also require individuals who possess strong moral character, creative thinking skills, confidence and resilience. Some of our strategic objectives over the next five years include the creation of a made-inRSGC Bridge Year that will provide enriched learning and personal growth for graduates, as well as a formalized mentorship program aimed at connecting our boys to our vast network of talented alumni. Our academic programs will

evolve to ensure they extend the opportunities for our boys to solve problems, think deeply, design solutions, and learn and practice entrepreneurship. Future-focused as it is, our strategic plan also articulates those things about RSGC that should never change. Our renewed mission and values capture the essence of the College: a focus on each boy; the importance of manners, integrity and spirituality; and our belief in the power of community. Our commitment to “known and loved” continues to guide each interaction with the boys. One of my favourite projects leading up to the College’s Golden Jubilee is the creation of our 50th Anniversary History Book. As we gather the mosaic of stories that weave the narrative of the first 50 years of RSGC, it’s clear that, while much has changed, the truly important things have remained constant. My personal thanks to our broad community for your support of this wonderful school.

Message from the President of the Georgian Parents’ Guild

Gail Graham President

T

he Guild enjoyed another great year of friend- and fundraising in 2013/14. Thanks to the energy and talents of our 30 Guild Convenors and over 180 parent volunteers, we have been able to honour our ongoing financial commitments to the Capital Campaign, the Student Bursary and to fund the Senior School’s new Media Studies Lab. We had record attendance at the Mistletoe Market Cocktail Party and our other major fundraisers, the Cheese Sale and the Used Textbook Sale, built on last year’s achievements.

There were several new initiatives this year. In November, we sent out our very first Guild newsletter. Distributed as a monthly e-blast highlighting upcoming Guild and school events, the newsletter also serves as a vehicle to thank volunteers and put faces to names. Its format of concise, newsworthy content and photos has been very well received. I would like to thank Carolyn Cullen for leading this project. Working closely with the Admissions department, we also launched the Parent Ambassador Buddies program. Select parent ambassadors took on the role of becoming a “parent buddy” to parents of new boys. That means making contact with them before term starts and giving them a personal friend who doesn’t work at the College to use as a resource. This initiative has been copied by at least one school, so it must be a success! Keen to attract as much of the parent body as possible, we added value to our meetings by hosting a number of speakers at our monthly Guild meetings. This year, we enjoyed updates from Catherine Kirkland and Paul O’Leary on Junior and Senior School initiatives, and an illuminating insight into university trends from Nick Van Herk. Looking ahead to the next academic year, we are poised to launch Georgian Alumni Parents, an association of parents whose sons have graduated from the school. We will be communicating to them through a newsletter and hosting an annual social geared at keeping them engaged and active in the school community. I would like to thank my fellow Executives Carolyn Cullen, Stacey Russett, Lynne

10 Royal St. George’s College 2013-14 Annual Report

Woollcombe and Treasurer Madhu Sikand for their talents and great council. Carolyn’s time on the Executive has now come to a close and we’re sad to say goodbye to her and her invaluable guidance. Thanks also go to Maria Jordan, Executive Director of Advancement, who has helped the Guild on so many levels. We often ask ourselves: how did we manage without her? On behalf of the entire Guild, please accept our heartfelt thanks to all Georgian parents for supporting and participating in our events and fundraisers. Royal St George’s College is a very special community and I feel very fortunate to be part of it.

Message from the President of the Alumni Association

Colin Watson ’94 President, RSGCAA

T

he goal of the RSGC Alumni Association Executive in the 2013-14 school year was to identify successes and weaknesses in the previous year’s programming — and build on the successes. My own goal as President was to maintain a visible presence on campus and at events in order to raise our profile and help current students understand Georgian life after graduation. I had the pleasure of speaking at several events. I often said that graduation marks the passing from one stage of the Georgian experience to another. Beyond encouraging the boys to stay in touch with the school, I assured

their parents that we would stay in touch with their sons and with them. Alumni Association programming is strong on mentoring and networking. This was the key point to parents and boys throughout this past year. A disengaged young RSGC graduate is one who eschews chances at meeting alumni in his area of study and future field of work. This message was well received and a commitment was made to ongoing two-way communication with graduate parents. There was good reason for alumni of all ages to come together and take part in alumni events this year. Our annual Speed Mentoring Night saw the strongest alumni presence yet. The Grade 12 class met alumni who are five to 15 years older and had the opportunity to speak with them one-on-one in five-minute sessions. The Speed Mentoring Night received rave reviews from parents and students alike. The Old Boys’ Dinner in November yielded its highest turnout to date, breaking the record held the previous year. The dinner serves no higher purpose than getting as many alumni as possible into one room for an evening of levity and reminiscences. This year was no exception. A few weeks later, we hosted a merged ‘Legends’ event. We brought together existing Legends ball hockey and basketball tournaments, and afterwards, headed to the pub. With a huge turnout in 2013, we expect this event will be one to watch in 2014. In the spring, we hosted our annual Alumni Networking Forum. The event was a success on a number of fronts including young alumni engagement, overall turnout and successful

networking connections. The Association is indebted to Past President James Peters ’90 for his help. The close of the 2013-14 school year sees out the end of my two-year term as President. I am confident I am handing the Association over to Alex Edmison ’02 in better shape than I inherited it. I know he will pass it on to his successor in even better condition. Alex is as fine a graduate as the school has ever produced and I know our community will enjoy getting to know him better during the 2014-15 year. I’d also like to extend congratulations to the boys of the Class of 2014 on their ascension to the ranks of university freshman. I’ve grown close to many of our fine young men in my time as President and I will miss their camaraderie most of all.

“We have hopes that some day our grandsons will be the beneficiaries of the RSGC community’s generosity.”

T

he St. George’s College Foundation was established in 1988 to support the activities of Royal St. George’s College as a registered charity with Canada Revenue Agency. The Foundation’s mandate is to raise, administer and disburse funds on behalf of the College to support educational purposes. During the year ended June 30, 2014, the Foundation received charitable contributions of $1.1 million to the Capital Campaign and additional donations totaling approximately $632,000, which comprised annual giving, endowment and other fund contributions.

The Foundation disbursed $1.4 million to the College in 2013-14. The Foundation’s assets are invested in cash and cash equivalents to meet immediate obligations, and also in equity and fixed income investment funds. As at June 30, 2014, the net assets of the Foundation totaled $1.8 million, a significant increase over the prior year’s total of $1.2 million. Approximately $1.6 million of the Foundation assets are presently managed by the professional management firm of CGOV, and the investment return for the period was an impressive 15.9%. The Trustees – John Buckingham ’71; Peter Furnish, an RSGC parent (cross-appointed as Chair of the Advancement Committee of the RSGC Board of Governors); Wanda Ho, alumni parent; Jamie Lint ’98; David Mather, an RSGC alumni parent, and I – have had a very productive year addressing a number of governance items, and reviewing and approving new policies. The

Trustees conducted a review of the Statement of Investment Policy and Goals, and adopted an Endowment Management Policy. New Gift Acceptance, and Naming and Recognition policies were also written. On behalf of the Trustees of the Foundation, I extend appreciation to our generous donors, and to Jane Nyman and Maria Jordan for their tremendous support. What Are They Studying?

Where They Went

Quotes from the Valedictorian, Head Boy Thom Robson ’14 “Respect, responsibility, voice, manners and brotherhood. These things are the intangibles; the things that will continue with us for the rest of our lives. Today we all leave the College as Georgians. This means we are all respectful, responsible and well-mannered young men. We hold doors, we say our please’s and thank you’s, we take the high road even if it’s the harder thing to do. These things, my brothers, are the things that will define us now and forever. It is the time given outside of the classroom by these fantastic people that I believe really helped mold us into the young men we are today. We learned the importance of being on time, how to wear a tie, how to continue to strive to be the best we can be, how to judge and value character, how to dance, that there is a right time and place for everything, how if you treat someone with respect they respect you back, the importance of giving maximum effort in everything whether you’re ahead or behind. ”

Royal St. George’s College 2013-14 Annual Report 15

Message from the Treasurer

A Catherine Bateman Treasurer

s we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Royal St. George’s College in 1964, I am pleased to report that the College is financially sound. Tuition and other revenue was $13.3 million for the year ended June 30, 2014, which was slightly higher than the previous year of $13.0 million. Combined with donations to annual giving and other donations to the Capital Asset Fund, the comparative totals for cash inflows were $14.7 million in fiscal 2014 vs $14.4 million in the previous year. We have benefitted in both years from having high enrolment levels at the school. Expenses for the year ending June 30, 2014 were kept at the 2013 level of $13.8 million. We rely on a portion of our operating expenses being covered by donations each year. For fiscal 2014, the St. George’s College Foundation granted the College $250,000 in proceeds from annual giving provided by generous donors. These amounts are critical in helping us to provide the high quality program that our boys enjoy. Although the Capital Campaign for the College’s major construction project wound up in fiscal 2013, we continue to see the benefit of this campaign in our financial statements as we receive the donations resulting from pledges made over several years. Contributions for fiscal 2014 totaled over $1.1 million. Included in this balance were new donations specifically earmarked for the construction project and related debt. This allowed us to take full

16 Royal St. George’s College 2013-14 Annual Report

advantage of the prepayment option on our debt of 10 per cent without penalty and pay down an additional $670,000 of principal. Combined with our regular monthly and annual debt repayments, our total principal repayment for the year was over $1.3 million. This has reduced our longterm debt from $6.7 million to $5.4 million. Each year, the College sets aside a portion of its budget for capital purchases and technology upgrades to ensure that the infrastructure supporting the education of our boys remains strong. This year, the College spent just over $450,000 on facilities enhancements and technology. Our enrolment for the upcoming year is once again high. This alleviates pressure on our budgets, but we always work within conservative budgets and forecasts assuming varying levels of enrolment. We are particularly mindful of the debt we are currently carrying on our balance sheet and until that is fully paid off, we will continue to be vigilant. Our 2014/2015 year promises to be spirited and thrilling, with many events and activities for boys, parents, alumni and the entire RSGC community as we celebrate 50 years of a great school.
