Royal St. George's College Traffic Management Plan: Ketchum Hall Renovation Purpose Parents, staff, students and guests of the College are asked to read the following information carefully. Our goals include: • To provide a safe environment for all students • To identify key drop off/pick up and parking areas • To be respectful community members It is very important that our school community continues to be considerate of our neighbours. RSGC does not condone illegal parking or parking in valuable street spaces.
Travel to and from RSGC
Everyone is encouraged to use alternative means of travel when arriving to the campus in an effort to reduce pollution and minimize the impact of vehicular traffic in the neighbourhood.
Take the Better Way!
Walk
RSGC is three to five blocks from three different subway stations (Bathurst, Dupont, Spadina), and the Bathurst St. bus stops 100 metres from the campus.
The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other makes you healthier, gives you more energy, and makes you feel better!
Bike
Carpool
There are bike racks available to lock your two-wheeled mode of transportation. The racks are located between the Junior School and See House as well as in the covered space beneath the FTC .
Save time and gas money! We are happy to assist you in finding other families from your neighbourhood so you can share the driving duties.
Drop Off - Layby on Howland Avenue We appreciate that many of the younger students will be dropped off and picked up. This necessitates efficient use of the layby in front of See House.
Hug N' Go! Parents who drive their children to school should drop them off in the layby on Howland Avenue. Staff will supervise, thus assisting the process of keeping each child safe. Please follow their directions. The layby is busy between 7:40 and 8:05 a.m. Parents are asked to arrive well before the start of the school day if possible. • • • • • •
Upon entering the layby, pull as far ahead as possible. Please have your son(s) ready to exit the vehicle; exit curbside only. Please have bags easily accessible. Please stay in the driver’s seat; be alert for other vehicles passing on your left side. Parking is prohibited during drop off. Do not pull your vehicle onto the sidewalk when dropping off your son.
If the layby is backed up, you may be asked to drop your son(s) in front of the Junior School entry and depart via the west side of the campus, heading south on Albany Avenue. Please use this method of drop off only when instructed by a staff member. All drivers should proceed through this area with caution, paying particular attention to pedestrians on the tarmac and approaching the driveway on Albany Avenue.
Drop-Off Procedure for Senior School Parents Senior School boys should use alternate means of transit (such as walking, cycling or the TTC) whenever possible. Discounted TTC tickets are available through the College (contact finance@ rsgc.on.ca for more information) and the campus is located conveniently close to both Bathurst and Dupont stations. We ask that Senior School parents refrain from dropping their sons off. If you choose to do so, please consider dropping your son off on Albany Avenue or at a safe off-campus location within walking distance, such as Wells Street (located one block north of the school).
Short Term Parking Limited parking on the tarmac remains available, especially after school and for special events. Upon leaving the school, you are to exit via the west side of the campus, heading south on Albany Avenue. Please proceed through this area with caution, paying particular attention to pedestrians on the tarmac and on the sidewalk on Albany Avenue.
Pick Up - Layby on Howland Avenue When picking up your son, we ask that you respect our neighbours’ need for street parking and avoid parking on Howland, Albany, Barton, or Wells. Do not pull your vehicle onto the sidewalk when picking up your son.
In the afternoon, the layby becomes a "pick up only" area. While waiting for your arrival, your son will be supervised by a teacher. We strongly encourage you to time your arrival to school so that you arrive only when you are certain your son has been dismissed and is waiting for you. Upon entering the layby, pull as far ahead as possible. Parents who use the layby need to stay with their vehicle. Please cooperate with staff directions. In order to alleviate congestion, you may be directed to the tarmac after school.
General Information Buses Our school policy is to provide on site parking for buses when picking up and dropping off students for various co-curricular activities. Most pick ups will occur outside of rush hour pick up and drop off. • Do not park in the layby when waiting for your son to arrive from an off site activity. At these designated times, you may access the tarmac to park and wait for your son’s bus to arrive. The layby is to be made available for the bus to drop your son off safely.
Student Drivers Students with a driving license are eligible to drive to school. Students who elect to drive are required to register their vehicle with the senior school office. Students are NOT permitted to park on streets bordering the campus, in keeping with our “good neighbour” commitment. Student drivers should drive quietly and respectfully. Inappropriate behaviour will result in disciplinary action.
Students Driving to and from School Events Student drivers and their passengers require both the school's permission and parental consent to drive to and from school events.
Staff Parking The RSGC parking garage is available for faculty and staff parking. When possible, these spaces will be made available to guests/visitors.
Special Events Again, we encourage visitors to the campus to use the subway or other alternative means of travel as parking is limited during events. Most events at the College will have on-site parking available; however, the scale of the event will determine availability of parking. Visitors are asked to enter the campus through the Albany Avenue entrance and follow the instructions given by the parking supervisor.
Drive Safely The following driving maneuvers are illegal and dangerous for all: • Driving north against the one-way signs indicating south travel only. • Backing up one-way streets in the opposite direction. • Driving at unsafe speeds on campus or in the neighbourhood. • Pulling your vehicle onto the curb or sidewalk at any time.
Local Area Parking In the event that we reach our on-site capacity for parking for special events, you will be asked to park at the following locations:
Walmer Road Baptist Church (this is the closest and most convenient location)
Local Green P Parking Lots
