Mixed-Use Urban Infill 101 E. Jefferson Street
Tallahassee, FL
E. Jefferson Street is located one block north of the Florida State Capitol Building. The existing buildings along the street are characterized by mid-rise office and retail buildings with 2 small parks along the south side of the street. The intent was to design a three level mixed-use building with an elegant facade that appeals to customers and tenants while not contradicting too much with the surrounding buildings’ styles.
The building was composed of a small coffee shop on the ground level, office space on the second level, and two small apartments on the third level. A small rooftop garden softens the footprint of the building while adding a unique space for the residents.

Catalyst Dance Studio Phillips Road
Tallahassee, FL
The Catalyst Dance Studio was designed for interpretive dancer Emily Johnson. The studio consists of three large studios and an outdoor amphitheater for small performances. Emily Johnson’s plays are interpretations of movements in people’s everyday lives represented through dance. She portrays a strong relationship between bold and elegant movements throughout her dances which is represented in the structure by rectilinear spaces woven together by a curved, hook-like roof structure. The curved steel elements provide shading and tie the amphitheater into the eastern corner of the building.

Gallie Alley Urban Infill S. Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL
Gallie Alley is a historic alley way which was a space for local artists to showcase their work and a place for gathering and socializing. lt lost its proposed purpose in the late 1960’s due to the overwhelming volume of civil rights protests in Tallahassee.
The goal of this design was to sustain the needed functions of the infill building while still providing a pathway throughout the site from S. Moroe Street to the interior of Gallie Alley. The boldness of the vertical mass draws in pedestrian traffic along S. Monroe, where as the second level’s horizontal screened pathway feeds pedestrians interests and pulls them into the interior promenade. The use of intersecting horizontal and vertical elements give a profound statement to the series of facades on S. Monroe while still respecting the surrounding buildings with similar materials and balance of elements.

The urban infill building features a ground floor retail plaza including a small resturant and cafe and a second floor containing three two-level loft apartments. The surrounding buildings and alley are replenished to be more appealing the guests and preserve their historical significance. The use of horizontal balconies and walls treated with perforated metal panels creates a series of playful edges and materials for people as they experience the interior space.
