Thank you and farewell
TO ART UNION CHAIRMAN, VIC READING
Enlisting in the Australian Army at 22 in 1964, it wasn’t long before Vic Reading was actively serving in Vietnam between 1968 – 1969. Vic knew upon his return to Australia, he wanted to continue to be part of the Defence family, and in 1970 Vic became a member of his local subbranch. Starting out as a member, Vic’s affiliation with the RSL and his commitment to supporting the veteran community has only grown over the years. During Vic’s time at RSL, Vic has held numerous positions. Never shying away from a challenge, he has progressed through the ranks, holding roles of Brisbane North District President, RSL Art Union Chairman, RSL Queensland Director, and RSL Queensland Company Board Secretary. In his 11 years as Art Union Chairman, the organisation has gone from strength to strength. Born out of the need to raise funds for veteran support and advocacy services over 63 years ago, today, 96 per cent of all funds raised for RSL Queensland are through the Art Union. This support is in the form of advocacy services, financial assistance with medical expenses, pensions, DVA claims and income claims, counselling, health and well-being services, and through the RSL Employment and Scholarship programs. Bringing his vast experience, commitment to getting the job done, and never-ending passion, Vic has been invaluable in shaping a culture that is relentless in serving the veteran community. Under his governance, the Art Union has grown significantly to be Australia’s largest charitable lottery, and his legacy to Australia’s veterans and their families is the lotteries’ success. We thank you Vic for your years of service and wish you all the best! Vic will be stepping down as Art Union Chairman after this edition of the Insider and will be passing the baton to current RSL State Deputy President, John Strachan (OAM). John joined the RSL in 1984, and previously served 38 years with the Army in the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery. We will welcome John in our next edition. 3

SANANANDA SHORES
has its own story to tell
New Guinea, military operations, Buna to Sanananda Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales
R
and Sanananda – more than 6,000 were killed or wounded, with many more casualties lost to illness.
This year’s final draw, The Golden Treasure (371), boasts an impressive apartment complex worth $6.4 million in Palm Beach by the name of Sanananda Shores. More than just a tongue-twister of a word, Sanananda is one of the lesserknown World War II battles, and one that RSL Art Union wants to raise awareness of in 2019.
“This year we have Sanananda Shores, and next year we’ll raise the profile of Buna, the other battle in the Beachheads conflict”, Mrs Roy said.
SL Art Union’s Property and Prize Manager, Lisa Roy, has named more than her fair share of prize homes. From four bedroom beach houses to four-storey unit blocks, Lisa enjoys the challenge of picking a name – one that raises awareness for RSL’s cause and educates the community in the process.
Like its Papua New Guinea counterparts, Sanananda formed part of the Battle of the Beachheads, which also included the Buna and Gona conflicts. The battle of Sanananda took place from 1942-1943, when Australian and American soldiers journeyed to Papua New Guinea to fight the Japanese. Many soldiers lost their lives, and we remember 2,100 allied casualties and an additional 1,500 Japanese soldiers. Lisa says Australians are aware of Kokoda’s significance, but less is known of the Battle of the Beachheads, despite being the largest and longest battle fought in Papua. With 27,000 Australian and American soldiers fighting across Buna, Gona 10
RSL Art Union has named the overarching body corporate Beachheads and has committed to naming the next Golden Treasures – the largest prize home packages offered each year – as a tribute to the soldiers who fought in the Beachhead battles.
“We always endeavour to reflect our cause in the name, recognising veterans past and present who have made a difference – and in this case, have not had their story told as widely.
“With the help of our membership base, we agreed Sanananda was a great place to start in paying tribute to a lesser-known battle with an amazing story to tell.” Sanananda Shores, the largest-ever prize offered in RSL Art Union history, boasts a property portfolio including a penthouse, two townhouses and two apartments. The lucky winner will receive the keys just in time for Christmas, with the winner drawn on 24 December, 2019.

DRAW 369 WINNER
“YOU’RE KIDDING ME?! ARE YOU SURE? I’LL HAVE TO TELL MY HUSBAND!” Janette Adams* from Chirn Park, Queensland received the $4.1 million phone call from General Manager, Tracey Bishop that has turned her recent luck completely around. As a long-time supporter of RSL Art Union, Janette expressed that the reason for her commitment of over 12 years was mainly the cause, with the possibility of a win. “I support to help the veterans, and of course, to maybe one day win a prize.” Janette received the news that after her many years of support, she was now the lucky winner of a $4.1 million beach house in Palm Beach, Queensland. Her ticket no. 666,791 was drawn as the first prize winner at 10am (AEST) on October 9. After the initial shock of the news subsided, her husband joined the call and exclaimed “are you sure this is not a joke, because we have been through some really rough times lately.”
After many years of hardship, the deserving couple are over the moon with this life-changing win. “This is just an absolute blessing” said Janette. Congratulations to all the winners of Draw 369. *Name changed for privacy reasons.
