Imagine owning your own slice of summer paradise in one of the Gold Coast’s most sought after suburbs.

Undergoing a resurgence in recent years, the reputation of Palm Beach has steadily grown in recent times to be one of the hottest suburbs in the Gold Coast. A significant wave of property development has seen a stronger market – ideal for those wishing to live, sell or invest and hold on to their homes to benefit from stronger growth. With an explosion of cafés and restaurants, not to mention the cheerful holiday weather and dangerously good surf, it is no wonder the area has come into its own. While Palm Beach retains the relaxed laid-back vibe of yesteryear, its location means you are within a stone’s throw from Surfers Paradise. Known for its bright lights and buzzing night life, the Gold Coast is the ideal place for adventure seekers. With lively bars, award-winning dining, shopping and live shows right on your doorstep, living in Palm Beach means you can enjoy the best of both words.

John Strachan OAM Chairman, RSL Art Union

John’s commitment to the veteran community has continued over many years, first joining RSL in 1984 as a member and since holding positions including District Vice President, District President, and Sub Branch President. From Draw 372, as well as serving in his current roles of State Deputy President and Board Member, John will also lead our Art Union division in the position of Chairman. We are delighted to welcome John’s vast experience, commitment to the cause, and most importantly leadership that will steer us into 2020 in pursuit of our goal; to grow funding for critical support services that help our Defence family in real and practical ways. Welcome John! 9

DANIEL AND HIS FAMILY AT THEIR GOLD COAST CAFE, FIRST FRUITS COFFEE. 10

DVA CLAIM ASSISTANCE HELPS VETERAN START NEXT CHAPTER When Daniel Smith medically discharged from the Army in 2014 – after eight years of service in 6RAR – the prospect of life outside the military was daunting. “It was super difficult to try and readjust to civilian life again after being in the military for so long,” Daniel says. His next challenge was trying to navigate the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) claims process – a task he found confusing and almost gave up on. “There seems to be a lot of hoops that need to be jumped through and not really a clear roadmap to be able to get there,” says Daniel. “I remember kind of feeling overwhelmed and almost wondering if it was worth it.” After reaching out to RSL Queensland, a trained advocate was allocated to assist with his claim. “They helped in what I should apply for and what would be accepted. They’ve done it a lot and they were able to really guide me through the claims process,” Daniel says.

I remember kind of feeling overwhelmed and almost wondering if it was worth it. - Daniel Smith

During his discharge and rehabilitation, Daniel worked at the 6RAR Battalion Boozer, where he discovered his love of coffee. With a successful DVA claim processed, Daniel and his wife Anna were able to move ahead with establishing their own business based on the Gold Coast, First Fruits Coffee. “We have a chain of cafés. We also have a coffee roaster, which roasts for ourselves, and also for other cafés. And then we have our training wing where we train people wanting to make coffee better at home or enter the industry,” Daniel says. The assistance of RSL Queensland was a key ingredient to making the business a success. “It really enabled us to be able to kick-start a business in terms of having some financial freedom in order to put money into the business to be able to grow it.” First Fruits Coffee is now expanding further, with cafés and a roastery opening in Tokyo, Japan in late 2019. Daniel hopes other ex-service members take up the assistance available. “I think RSL Queensland is really there to help us veterans, regardless of our age, move into civilian life a lot better.”

DANIEL SERVING IN THE ARMY

Funds generated through the Art Union assisted RSL Queensland to successfully submit over 4,700 DVA claims in 2018. Find out more at rslqld.org 11
