Domenico Lio Senior Associate / Senior Designer NBBJ 2 Rector Street, 25th Floor New York, NY 10006

Yang Huang 752 West End Avenue, 14th Floor New York, NY, 10025

25th July 2017 Dear Mr Lio, Please accept my application for the fall internship in commercial or healthcare group in NBBJ. My name’s Yang Huang, a recent advanced architectural design graduate from Columbia University, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. In Columbia, I studied in three amazing studios: Juan Herreros, Bernard Tschumi and Atelier Bow-wow. I got High Pass in all three design studios, which represent tutors’ high recognition to me. I am willing to work in NBBJ because the designers in NBBJ always makes innovations based on the practical needs and living modes rather than form. It was shown clearly in the factory renovation project for Boeing Company and the Li Ka Shing Center in Stanford University. This faith wmatches my own belief. For example, in one of my undergraduate design studio: ‘Ningbo International Airport, Terminal 2’, I proposed an asymmetric configuration because of site condition and practical need for division of international and domestic flows. In order to make this innovation predictable, I completed plan drawings in a very specific way. In the end, this design was praised by my tutor, the designer of terminal 2 of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, as “ a very brave and wonderful design”. Please review this design in my attached work samples. I had a three-month intense internship which contains a biding project design of Shanghai Archives. I participated in the whole process of this competition, from project design to plan and diagram drawings. My team got second prize in this competition. I think we did a good job especially when consider that this team has only three members. However, this experience also confirmed my desire to work with more greatest professionals in NBBJ, because innovations are more likely to come true with the help of advanced technology, rich experience and open platform. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or require further information. I appreciate your time and look forward to further discussion with you.

Sincerely, Yang Huang (917)678-8201

Ningbo International Airport, Terminal 2 Ningbo, China 8 - week project/ 2015 T utor Gao Wenyan Zhou Yin Collaborator Liu Dayong My Role Concept: Analysis: Drawing: Models: Presentation Because of globalization, airports act as hubs of communication. Many people spend their hundreds of hours in terminals. In some place, terminals even become regional commercial centers. However, n ormal terminal design mainly focus on their function for transportation and make people feel hard to stay in them. In this. case, I hope to break through the ordinary style of terminals both on site plan and stn」cture to make them .accommodate with the practical need

For plane operation efficiency and the harmony with T1, I adopt the asymmetric site plan Next step, I started to think how to combine the s ite plan with the travelers'boarding circulation Pr eviously, travelers have to endur e a long and boring I iner circulation to get their boarding gates Now, in my design, the boarding and arriving circulation utilize the central courtyard well to make most of the travelers to enjoy a wonderful experience befor e their boarding or after their arriving

Odaka Horse Watching Cloister Minamisoma, Fukushima, Japan 13 - week project/ 2017 T utor: Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima (Atelier Bow-Wow) Individual Project In Minamisoma, there is a famous traditional Horse Riding Festival called Soma Nomaoi. It is a yearly three-day festival. This new horse riding school complex helps reactivating Odaka's strong and unique horse culture. This Cloister connects horse painting gallery (local people wo uld paint horses as a gift for god), horse shoes making workshop, reception, host's house, dormitory, and horse stables. In this way, Visitors would understand that horse riding in Odaka is not only a sport but also aculture. This Cloister would also be the place where local people meet with visitors.

The Morningside Gymnasium New York City, the Unite States 12 - week project/ 2016 Tutor Bernard Tschumi Collaborator Ciudad Alejandro My Role Concept: Analysis: Drawing: Models: Presentation The project is an expanded vie w of sports Focusing on the space for communal interaction through the physical activity and protection of the body The space ove rlooks the segregating factors of society and returns to the unbiased nature of the human. Morning Side Park lies in a space of, social, cultural. economic segregation and the efforts from the park to pursue sports as an identifying factor are experienced through the facilities and notations already located in the park Like the Tower of Babel, The MorningSide Gymnasium, is the construction that represents that communality and unifying ground where in dividuals come together as a group

Columbia University Protests of 1968 0 n April 23, 1968, Col um bi a University students. began a nonviolen t occupation o f campus buildings that lasted nearly a week. Students and community supporters called for the university to cut its ties to research for the war in Vietnam and to end construction of a gym in Morningside Park. After negotiations failed, the administration sent in the police, injuring many and arresting over 700. triggering a campus-wide strike that shut down the university

The old gym was opposed by students be cause its en closure volume and discriminational attitude. It occupyied public space but only columbia students and facultys can access it. The main entrance is on the Morningside Height where Columbia University locates, It has a tiny backdoor for Harlem, which was regarded as a represe ntation of discrimination for Harlem Community The construction was stopped after the protests of 1968.

The whole building is constituted by an interior spiral loop and an exterior spiral loop The exterior spiral loop is the main circulation which smoothly connect the Harlem and Morningside Height The prog rams of the gymn a s i um concentrate on the interior loop There are a swimming pool, a m ulti-funtion court, a gym a restaurant and a sona in the gymnasium Different programs connect ea ch other on spiral loop and create a continuous spacial experience Visual conn ections are .also created between different levels.

The structure design of this gymnasium is very unique You can imagine that the spiral volume can be unfolded as a super beam. The bottom of the super bea m was. inserted into the slope and deliever most of the vertical force to the slope This. structure innovation reduce the size of the structure under the spiral volume in order to create the connection between the interior and exterior on the exterior spiral loop

In this academy design, there are two things which are most important The first one is the inner arrangement of the academy We came to nalysis this case in a more abstract view. Relationships between entities should satisfy the academy's use and creating good atmosphere of learning to inspire the students to learn. In addition to learn well, liv e well, the relationship between the learning and living cannot be fragmented In this model, the grey is the study part. the white one is living part, well mixed and not influence each other. The second is the relationship between the academy and the city The academy should make the city more open In this model, we can see that the academy has a yard of L shape along the river. This empty makes the whole college have an open attitude to the river and gives the surrounding community a new public space which is different from ordinary.public space
