L a s t F r i d a y G u i l d s were t o have h e l d a U n i o n Meeting to dispose of 2 o l d cars which had taken up p e r m a n e n t r e s i d e n c e i n t h e y a r d b e h i n d G u i l d s . These d e r e l i c t v e h i c l e s had been f o r s a k e n by t h e i r owners, due t o t h e p r o b a b l e f i n c a n c i a l loss r e s u l t i n g from t h e i r removal. Guilds U n i o n Committee proposed t o s e l l these v a l u a b l e s c r a p - h e a p s b y a u c t i o n a t 1 . 1 5 p.m., w i t h r e s u l t i n g good q u i e t f u n f o r a l l . Now t h e R . C . S . U n i o n h a d a l s o p l a n n e d some g o o d f u n i n s e c r e t f o r t h e same o c c a s i o n . When a G u i l d s U n i o n m e e t i n g i s h e l d i t i s the h a b i t o f t h e P r e s i d e n t t o b r i n g t h e Spanner to the meeting. On t h i s o c c a s i o n t h e V i c e P r e s i d e n t , b r a v e J a s p e r A s p i n a l l , was t o b r i n g i t instead. A t 1 . 1 3 p.m. h e h a d o b t a i n e d t h e s p a n n e r a n d was c a r r y i n g i t a c r o s s t h e G u i l d s Entranoe H a l l . T h e n t h e R.C.S. s t r u c k I C e r t a i n o f t h e i r n u m b e r , who a c c e p t t h e h o s p i t a l i t y o f G u i l d s L e c t u r e C o u r s e s , and were thus u n s u s p e c t e d , p o u n c e d o n v a l i a n t J a s p e r a n d persuaded h i m a n d t h e S p a n n e r t o a o c o m p a n y t h e m

outside.

The S p a n n e r was t h e r e t a k e n o v e r b y a c y c l i s t 6 ft. 8 4 i n s . t a l l , who s t r a n g e l y w a s a n o t h e r R . C . S . man. T h i s was t h e f i r s t t i m e t h a t t h e trophy had l e f t G u i l d s ' possession f o r seventeen y e a r s , and n a t u r a l l y they were annoyed. Th e g i a n t c y c l i s t w a s a p p r e h e n d e d ( m i n u s S p a n n e r ) , d e b a g g e d o u t s i d e t h e R.C.S. M a i n B u i l d i n g , and t h e n f o l d e d i n two so t h a t he c o u l d f i t i n t o the boot o f a car. The c a r p l u s G u i l d s t h e n p r o c e e d e d t o I.C. U n i o n , where t h e P r e s i d e n t o f R.C.S. was f o u n d u n a t t e n d e d a n d p r e s s e d t o join the party. Then w i t h two h o s t a g e s a p a r l e y was h e l d i n f r o n t o f t h e R.C.S., whose d o o r s wer e b a r r i c a d e d . The b a r g a i n o f t w o a n i m a t e o b j e c t s , One P r e s i d e n t a n d one d e b a g g e d , i n e x c h a n g e f o r one i n a n i m a t e o b j e c t , t h e Spanner, was r e f u s e d w i t h j e e r s b y t h e R.C.S. f r o m t h e s h e l t e r o f t h e i r building. No o t h e r c o u r s e w a s l e f t b u t f o r t h e M e e t i n g t o a d j o u r n t o t h e S e r p e n t i n e , s o t h a t some form o f aquatic entertainment oould take place. Th e d e b a g g e d o n e r e a l i s i n g t h a t h e w a s h o p e l e s s l y outnumbered c o n s e n t e d w i t h good grace t o b r e a k t h e i c e , and sank t o 'pant l e v e l ' , 4 f t . f o r him. Our r e p o r t s become a t r i f l e c o n f u s e d a t t h i s p o i n t , b u t we k n o w f o r c e r t a i n t h a t t h e P r e s i d e n t o f R.C.S. a n d t h e P r e s i d e n t o f G u i l d s (wearing the G u i l d s coat) j o i n e d t h e bathing-part y i n the Serpentine.

The G u i l d s m e n b y n o * r e g a r d e d t h e d e b a g g e d one w i t h a f f e c t i o n a s b e i n g a p r i z e d r e l i c , s o he w a s r u s h e d i n t o t h e M i n e s t o s a v e t h e P o l i c e from embarassment. Two f u r t h e r b y - p r o d u c t s r e s u l t e d d u r i n g t h e afternoon, a very unpleasant s m e l l permeated t h e u p p e r f l o o r s o f G u i l d s - a n d t h o s e G u i l d s m e n who w o r k i n t h e R.C.S. ( 1 s t Chem. E n g . ) e n d u r e d a p a s s a g e o f a r m s i n t h e R.C.S. E n t r a n c e H a l l b e f o r e t h e y c o u l d c o n t i n u e work. A s a r e s u l t o f t h i s t h e R . C . S . t a b l e i s now minus a f e w l e g s , and t h e G u i l d s m e n went t o t e a in pairs . . . . Dr. W i l l i s J a c k s o n i s t h i s y e a r ' s p r e s i d e n t o f the C i t y and G u i l d s E n g i n e e r i n g S o c i e t y . I n h i s p r e s i d e n t i a l a d d r e s s , on T h u r s d a y 11 F e b . h e s p o k e o n "The I n c r e a s i n g E n g i n e e r i n g I m p o r t a n c e o f some R a r e m e t a l a " b u t i n h i s p r e f a c e h e commented on c e r t a i n o f h i s i m p r e s s i o n s on r e e n t e r i n g i n d u s t r y . •". C . i n 1 9 5 1 a t t h e t e n d e r a g e o f 21, and i s a t p r e s e n t c o m p l e t i n g t h e t h i r d y e a r o f the Mechanical E n g i n e e r i n g course. before coming to I . e . , Tony s p e n t t e n y e a r s a t a p r i v a t e s c h o o l , w h e r e , a s h e s a y s , h e s a t a n d p a s s e d no e x a m i n a tions. He t h e n b e c a m e a p p r e n t i c e d t o a f i r m o f b o i l e r and d i e s e l e n g i n e m a n u f a c t u r e r s a t t h e age of 15. As P r e s i d e n t Tony h a B p r o v e d a n e x c e l l e n t l e a d e r , a n d h i s r o u n d common sense and a p p r a i s a l of s i t u a t i o n s have p r o v e d v e r y valuable i n Union a f f a i r s i n general. D u r i n g h i s address, Dr. W i l l i s J a c k s o n d i s cussed t r a n s i s t o r s as c o m p e t i t o r s to t h e r m i o n i c v a l v e s , f o l l o w e d b y some t h o u g h t s o n t h e e c o n o m i c s o f power r e a c t o r s and c o n c l u d e d w i t h a b r i e f mention of the use of t i t a n i u m i n a i r c r a f t s t r u c tures. The a d d r e s s was f o l l o w e d b y t h e a n n u a l dinner i n the Ayrton H a l l . D r . W.H. Glanville, i n p r o p o s i n g the t o a s t t o t h e S o c i e t y , opened by s a y i n g t h a t the p r e s e n t E n g l i s h s t u d e n t s were n o t so " s c r u f f y " as i n h i s day. He r e m a r k e d on t h e membership o f t h e S m e a t c n i a n S o c i e t y w h i c h b y i t s c o n s t i t u t i o n , c o n s i s t e d o f 48 e n g i n e e r s a n d 12 g e n t l e m e n . A f e a t u r e of t h i s s o c i e t y , w h i c h e n d e a r e d i t t o many o f t h o s e p r e s e n t , w a s the t o a s t "success to waterworks, p u b l i c or p r i v a t e . . . c o n t r i b u t e t o c o m f o r t . . . and happiness of mankind". P a u l Cross (Student Chairman of the Society) i n h i s r e p l y gave an a c c o u n t o f t h e s o c i e t i e s activities. T h i s s e s s i o n t h e r e has b e e n an i n c r e a s e o f 30$ i n a t t e n d a n c e a t m e e t i n g s . He w a s o f t h e o p i n i o n t h a t t h i s c o u l d b e muoh b e t t e r i f b r o w n b a g g e r s a n d t h o s e who u n d e r t o o k "other n o c t u r n a l a c t i v i t i e s " came a l o n g . N e v i l l e Wilson (Sec. of the Sooiety) prop o s e d t h e t o a s t t o t h e g u e s t s w h i c h was r e p l i e d b y A. A l b u i (M.P. f o r E d m o n t o n ) . He complained of h i s t a x i d r i v e r n o t k n o w i n g o f C i t y and G u i l d s When p r e s s e d f o r a n e x p l a n a t i o n , t h e d r i v e r s t a t e , t h a t h e was u s u a l l y o n n i g h t d u t y b u t M r . . A l b u i s a i d t h a t t h a t w o u l d h a v e b e e n no e x o u s e i n h i s day. I n c o n c l u s i o n , h e was g l a d t o s e e t h e p r e s e n t improvement from the lew p r e s t i g e which s c i e n c e and e n g i n e e r i n g d e g r e e s u s e d t o g i v e . The events on F r i d a y l a s t were a p l e a s a n t change from the hum-drum course t h a t t h i s term had p r e v i o u s l y f o l l o w e d . And t h e s e events were e s p e c i a l l y welcome because they were e n t i r e l y concerned w i t h o u r s e l v e s and gave no t r o u b l e ( o r almost no t r o u b l e ) to t h e P u b l i c . T h i s , i n d e e d , was a change from our rags of l a t e . A f t e r a l l t h i s commendation o f the ' p i n c h i n g of t h e Spanner' , i t i s w i t h r e g r e t t h a t we must d e p l o r e t h e way c e r t a i n people behaved i n t h e p r o c e e d i n g s . There were t h e G u i l d s m e n i n t h e entrance of G u i l d s who d i d n ' t l i f t a f i n g e r t o p r e v e n t t h e removal o f t h e i r v i c e - p r e s i d e n t and t h e Spanner. What s p i n e l e s s c r e a t u r e s must be e n t e r i n g I.C. i f t h e r e are t h o s e around us who can muster no spark o f partisanship for their college. A s i m i l a r r e t i c e n c e t o defend t h e honour o f t h e i r c o l l e g e was shown by t h e members o f E.C.S around the U n i o n - we know t h a t q u i t e a few were i n t h e main E.C.S. b u i l d i n g but t h e r e were s t i l l a goodly number i n t h e v i c i n i t y o f t h e Union o f f i c e - who o f f e r e d no r e s i s t a n c e , whatsoever, t o t h e k i d n a p p i n g o f t h e i r P r e s i d e n t . 3ven when the Guildsmens' v i c t i m s were t a k e n round t o E.C.S., t h e hordes i n s i d e s t i l l made no e f f o r t t o e f f e c t t h e r e l e a s e o f J i m Anderson. I t i s t o h i s c r e d i t t h a t he t o l d h i s c o l l e a g u e s t h a t he would r a t h e r go f o r a swim than f o r them t o surrender t h e spanner. But by t h i s time t h e spanner must have been w e l l and t r u l y hidden ( f o r t h e o r g a n i s a t i o n so e f f i c i e n t i n a c q u i r i n g t h e Spanner would s u r e l y have arranged f o r a s u i t a b l e d e p o s i t a r y ) and t h e r e would have been no danger o f l o s i n g i t i f they had come out and g i v e n battle for their President. Let us have more r a g s o f t h i s kino, nut i n f u t u r e a f f a i r s we hope t o see a g r e a t e r show o f l o y a l t y to our r e s p e c t i v e u n i o n s .

There a r e good books i n the U n i o n l i b r a r y . Some o f t h e m a r e r a t h e r l a r g e o r t h e i r n a t u r e may be s u c h a s t o make t h e m m o r e c o n v e n i e n t l y r e a d i n the library. And s i n c e i t i s more e n j o y a b l e t o r e a d and s i t , t h e l i b r a r y i s e q u i p p e d vyith comfortable chairs. The t r o u b l e i s t h a t t h e o h a i r s are always o c c u p i e d : t h e c h a i r s a r e t h e r e t o be u s e d b u t s u r e l y n o t by p e o p l e f u r i o u s l y p u s h i n g s l i d e - r u l e s or p l o t t i n g graphs. There are p l e n t y o f rooms i n I.C. s e t a s i d e f o r w o r k i n g . I f t h e s e a r e n o t a v a i l a b l e , i t w o u l d be t h o u g h t that Guilds l i b r a r y , provided with t a b l e s , would be p r e f e r r e d t o t h e U n i o n l i b r a r y where' t o s i t i n a r m c h a i r s n e c e s s i t a t e s h a v i n g one's p a p e r s o n t h e floor. I n a p l a c e l i k e I . C . , t h e r e i s n o t much opportunity f o r escaping from our studies w i t h t h e i r t h r e a t o f exams t o come. The U n i o n l i b r a r y w o u l d seem t o o f f e r s u c h a n e s c a p e a n d t o b r o w s e t h r o u g h books i n t h e r e s t f u l and q u i e t atmosphere, u s u a l l y t y p i c a l of l i b r a r i e s , would g i v e a welcome r e s p i t e f r o m the b u f f e r i n g s o f the wisdom o f o u r l e c t u r e r s on the mind. B u t we i n I.O/, c a n n o t e s c a p e ' . The restful s i l e n c e h a s g i v e n way t o t h e s q u e a k a n d r a t t l e o f the s l i d e r u l e and t h e s c r a t c h i n g s o f t h e s c r i b e . The p l e a s a n t a t m o s p h e r e h s s b e e n r e p l a c e d b y o n e charged w i t h h o s t i l i t y from,the r e s e n t f u l gaze o f the w o r k e r s o n t h e i n t r u d e r s "who o n l y w a n t t o look at books". C . w h e r e one w o u l d t h i n k t h a t the b e n e f i t s of our u n i v e r s i t y e d u c a t i o n would enable p e o p l e t o a p p r e c i a t e t h e codes o f good c o n d u c t and a c t a c c o r d i n g l y . C L U B 'Wednesday e v e n i n g l a s t w e e k saw a g r e a t number o f p e o p l e g a t n e r e d t r y i n g t o get a s e a t i n t h e Gym f o r a n e v e n i n g w n i o h p r o m i s e d something different. I t was t h e f i r s t v e n t u r e o f the newly formed I n t e r n a t i o n a l R e l a t i o n s C l u b and t h e y had d e c i d e d t o p r e s e n t an e v e n i n g o f A l l apprehenm u s i c and d a n c i n g from I n d i a . s i o n s r e g a r d i n g t h e number o f p e o p l e t u r n i n g u p t u r n e d t o j o y w h e n t h e y saw t h e Gym o v e r flowing with people. I t would have been a p i t y h a d t h e o a s t o f 40 b e e n g r e e t e d b y a n a u d i e n c e of t h e sane s i z e . The e v e n i n g i t s e l f p r o v i d e d u n u s u a l v a r i e t y . C o l o u r f u l dances a l t e r n a t e d w i t h savage s i n g i n g - almost s h o u t i n g of f o l k - s o n g s , strange i n s t r u ments making s t r a n g e r but u n m i s t a k a b l y m u s i c a l sounds, and, once, a r a t n e r l e n g t h y f i l m about the I n d i a n dances. T h i s p e r h a p s was t n e o n l y i t e m w h i c h m i g h t be t e r m e d b o r i n g ; f o r while the m a j o r i t y d i d n o t a p p r e c i a t e w h a t was g o i n g o n , they c e r t a i n l y found the o t h e r items i n t e r e s t i n g . A new t y p e o f f i l m a p p e a r e d i n L o n d o n l a s t w e e k at- t h e G a u m o n t p r i v a t e t h e a t r e i n W a r d o u r S t r e e t , a r r a n g e d by t h e B i l l y Graham London Crusade. I t i s an a t t e m p t t o t e l l the s t o r y of the e v a n g e l i s t i c campaign i n Houston T e x a s , and t o e x p l a i n i t s e f f e c t on t h e l i v e s o f a h a r d - h e a d e d o i l k i n g - L a n c e M a n n i n g , and his daughter C h r i s . Through the w i t n e s s of J i m and Kay T y l e r , on whose r a n c h M a n n i n g has struck o i l , Chris i s introduced to s p i r i t u a l t h i n g s and i s c o n v e r t e d . D i s a s t e r causes M a n n i n g t o see t h a t h i s l i t t l e k i n g d o m of o i l h o l d s n o t h i n g b u t e m p t i n e s s , and t h r o u g h t h e T e x a s C i t y s h i p e x p l o s i o n s he t o o i a f a c e d w i t h reality. He f i n d s t h e a n s w e r i n t h e c l o s i n g s c e n e s o f t h e f i l m , i n one o f G r a h a m ' s e v a n g e l i s t i c meetings. A c t u a l s c e n e s a r e shown o f t h e c r o w d o f 60,000 who a t t e n d e d t h e m e e t i n g s , and a l s o o f t h e d e v a s t a t i o n c a u s e d by t h e T e x a s City explosions. These have been s k i l f u l l y i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t o t h e f i l m s e q u e n c e , and on t h e whole the p r o d u c t i o n i s e x c e l l e n t , though i n a few o t h e r p l a c e s i t l a c k s c o n t i n u i t y . The c a s t i s c o m p o s e d o f C h r i s t i a n s f r o m a l l w a l k s o f l i f e , i n c l u d i n g some w e l l - k n o w n Hollywood p e r s o n a l i t i e s . Manning i s w e l l p l a y e d by P a u l Power, a P r e s b y t e r i a n m i n i s t e r , whose o n l y f a u l t i s t h a t he s o m e t i m e s d o e s n o t a p p e a r q u i t e a n g r y enough and d e a d l y enough t o f i t the Manning type. The b e s t p e r f o r m a n c e i s g i v e n by C o l l e e n Townsend as C h r i s . - a t h o r o u g h ly n a t u r a l , unaffected p e r s o n a l i t y - easier to p l a y than t h a t of Manning. The f i l m g i v e s a n i n t e r e s t i n g i n s i g h t i n t o B i l l y Graham's message and methods. He s p e a k s to the s i m p l e but u n i v e r s a l needs o f the p e o p l e , p r e s e n t i n g C h r i s t a s God's a n s w e r t o s i n , s o r r o w and d e a t h - t h e t r a d i t i o n a l message o f C h r i s t ianity. H i s p r e s e n t a t i o n i s f o r c e f u l , though n o t e m o t i o n a l , and shows a r e f r e s h i n g l a c k o f the sensationalism which c h a r a c t e r i s e d American e v a n g e l i s m o f t h e 1930's. This outb u r s t was c a u s e d b y t h e a p p e a r a n c e o f a F E L I X c o n t a i n i n g my i m p r e s s i o n s o f a n R.C.S. C a r n i v a l . T h u s y o u may i m a g i n e my j o y o n f i n d i n g t h a t , i n t h e PHOENIX u n d e r r e v i e w , Mr J o n e s h a s j o i n e d ae among t h e f l e a s and t a p e w o r m s , and h a s criticised the recen t A r t e x h i b i t i o n . As h e a s s u r e s u s i n h i s a r t i c l e , he s e e s t h e w o r l d w i t h t h e " p r i v i l e g e d e y e " o f t h e A r t i s t s o he i s f u l l y c o m p e t e n t f o r h i s u n p l e a s a n t t a s k , and h i s h o s t , A r t , w i l l a g r e e t h a t he h a s d o n e h e r a s e r v i c e . E n g l i s h s c i e n c e f i c t i o n was b o r n i n P H O E N I X ( T h e T i m e M a c h i n e ) , s o u.C. However, he o f f e r s us a cute l i t t l e s t o r y s e t i n the u s u a l peri o d ( l a t e 1960's, a f t e r the 3 r d W o r l d War), but I f e l t t h a t n i s t h e m e was t o o l a r g e t o be d e v e l o p e d i n a few pages. I t w i l l make a g o o d b a s i s f o r h i s f i r s t science novel. A d m i r e r s o f t h e w o r k o f " A . R . 3 . " w i l l be s u r p r i s e d t h a t the l a t e s t m a n i f e s t a t i o n of h i s g e n i u s ( r a r e l y seen nowadays) i s s e r i o u s i n n a t u r e . It t a k e s t h e f o r m o f an a u t o b i o g r a p h i c a l f r a g m e n t , strung very p o e t i c a l l y together, the p r i n c i p a l e f f e c t b e i n g p r o d u c e d by e x c e s s i v e use o f t h e w o r d "and". However, as most r e a d e r s w i l l skim through i t l o o k i n g f o r t h e p l o t , we n e e d c o n s i d e r i t no more. H o w e v e r a f e w h a r d e n e d members of the s a i l i n g club siezed the opportunity of r e a l i s i n g a l i f e - l o n g ambition to b u i l d an i c e y a c h t . No p l a n s o r p h o t o g r a p h s w e r e a v a i l a b l e b u t a f t e r l o n g and c a r e f u l c o n s i d e r a t i o n t h e o r a f t was f i n a l l y b u i l t i n 2 f h o u r s . I t proved almost a complete f a i l u r e : the helmsman b e i n g p o w e r l e s s to c o n t r o l i t s g y r a t i o n s . By t h e t i m e s i u t a b l e m o d i f i c a t i o n s h a d b e e n made t h e w i n d d r o p p e d a n d h i g h speeds were n o t p o s s i b l e a l t h o u g h c o n t r o l was improved. I t was f o u n d p o s s i b l e t o t r a v e l a t almost t w i c e the speed of the wind. J u s t a s t h e t h a w was s e t t i n g i n , a N o r t h W i s t - e r l y s q u a l l made i t p o s s i b l e t o s a i l u p a n d d o w n t h e H a r p a n d o n e l e n g t h was comp l e t e d i n 2 minutes a t an average speed o f j u s t u n d e r 30 m.p.h. A c h a l l e n g e was s e n t t o O x f o r d U n i v e r s i t y Y.C. f o r t h e m t o b r i n g t h e i r i c e y a c h t down f o r a m a t c h . I n the evening the Club ran a s u c c e s s f u l " Hop a t t h e U n i o n .
