Some o f t h e more p e s s i m i s t i c s a y "about a h u n d r e d " , g e n e r a l l y mumbling under t h e i r b r e a t h s o m e t h i n g about "not b e i n g a b l e t o s c r a p e two r u g g e r t e a m s t o g e t h e r " ; a g a i n t h e r e a r e o t h e r s who w o u l d p u t t h e f i g u r e n e a r e r t o two h u n d r e d . However , be t h a t a s i t may, i f we a s s u m e f o r t h e moment t h a t t h e r e a r e a c t u a l l y one h u n d r e d a n d f i f t y s t u d e n t s i n t h e M i n e s , t h e n one h u n d r e d a n d f o r t y - n i n e o f them went t o the l u n c h h o u r m e e t i n g of t h e M i n i n g and M e t a l l u r g i c a l S o o i e t y w h i o h was h e l d i n t h e M i n i n g L e o t u r e T h e a t r e a f o r t n i g h t ago. F i v e l e c t u r e s a day were d e p l o r e d by t h e p a n e l , and t h e a d v e n t o f a l a d y m i n e r was a p p r o v e d i n a n s w e r t o t h e q u e s t i o n "Why a r e R.S.M. s t u d e n t s t h e g r e a t e s t l o v e r s i n the world?" The M i n e s ' c o o k e r y ' b o o k , ( f o r u s e i n a s s a y i n g ) was w h o l e h e a r t e d l y c o n d e m n e d b y one q u e s t i o n e r f o r s u b j u g a t i n g any r e a s o n i n g powers which the student happened to possess to p r i m e v a l minimum; P r o f . Dannatt i n r e p l y s t a t e d that s i n c e t h o u g h t was a c o m p a r a t i v e l y r a r e c o m m o d i t y i n t h e R.S.M., a n d t h a t P r a c t i c a l A s s a y i n g was not the s o r t of s u b j e c t t h a t r e q u i r e d great r e a s o n i n g p o w e r s , he d i d n o t c o n s i d e r t h i s t o be such a bad t h i n g . Questions about the Geology Department^ c o n n e c t i o n w i t h the Mines,'and the i s s u e o f c y c l o s t y l e s h e e t s as an a i d t o l e c t u r i n g were a l s o asked. A T r e a s u r e H u n t was o r g a n i s e d b y t h e C o m b i n e d M o t o r C l u b s o f C i t y and G u i l d s , Queen Mary C o l l e g e and U n i v e r s i t y C o l l e g e on Sunday March 7 t h . The p r o g r a m m e was a n a m b i t i o u s one a n d b y 2.30 p.m., 33 s e p a r a t e e n t r a n t s h a d a s s e m b l e d o u t s i d e I.C. U n i o n . The e q u i p a g e s v a r i e d f r o m t h e s m a l l e s t motor-cycle, t o l a r g e and p o w e r f u l (though old) sports cars. A s f r o m 2.3O p.m. the competit o r s were sent o f f I n 1 m i n u t e I n t e r v a l s w i t h a s i m p l e s h e e t o f i n s t r u c t i o n s , 36 c o m p l i c a t e d c l u e s and the o r g a n i s e r s ' b l e s s i n g s . The r o u t e l e d o u t t h r o u g h H a m m e r s m i t h t o t h e L e a t h e r h e a d and G u i l d f o r d d i s t r i c t s ; and from a b o u t 4.00 t i l l 7.00 t h i s a r e a was f a i r l y r i d d l e d throughout by keen c l u e - s e e k e r s . L a s t n i g h t I.C. c h o i r gave t h e i r S p r i n g C o n c e r t i n Queen A l e x a n d r a House w i t h t h e Jacques Orchestra. T h i s t e r m , many o f t h e e x p e r i e n c e d a l t o s and s o p r a n o s l e f t , and were r e p l a c e d b y new m e m b e r s ; Dr. Brown has done s t e r l i n g w o r k i n b u i l d i n g up and i n t e g r a t i n g them i n t o a o h o i r of t h i s q u a l i t y . B u t t h e n s o was t h i s p r o d u c t i o n .
