The f i r s t Union Meeting of the S e s s i o n h e l d on Monday, Oat. 1 1 t h . i n the H.C.S.
The P r e s i d e n t opened the meeting by aski n g everyone to stand i n s i l e n c e f o r one minu t e , a s a mark of respeot t o the R e c t o r . He then announced, as most of the C o l l e g e knew, that Commemoration Day and Commemoration B a l l were o a n o e l l e d f o r t h i s year , but t h a t f u l l mourning f o r the Union would end t h a t night (the day of the f u n e r a l ) . I t was hoped that some k i n d of Union B a l l would be h e l d Instead of the Commem. B a l l , l a t e r i n the Session. The main b u s i n e s s - o f the meeting was taken up w i t h a d i s c u s s i o n of the arrangements f o r Nov. 3th. The d i s c u s s i o n c o n s i s t e d mostly of remarks from the P r e s i d e n t , who performed h i s thankless t a s k with remarkable diplomacy and taot. H i s o b j e c t was t o put over t o the U n i o n why once, a g a i n Nov. 5 t h . must pass unheralded as an occasion f o r a Rag, a t l e a s t as;- o f f i c i a l l y recognised. The reasons were strong; f i r s t l y the Union could not expect i t s e l e c t e d and r e s p o n s i b l e o f f i c e r s to organise Rags, whioh should be e s s e n t i a l l y spontaneous; and secondly, aa a r e s u l t o f l a s t y e a r ' s events the U.L. Senate had Issued an ultimatum to a l l London s t u d e n t s and had asked f o r the c o - o p e r a t i o n The ultimatum was t o the e f f e c t of U.L.U. t h a t any student i n t r o u b l e w i t h the A u t h o r i t i e s on November 5 t h . would be sent down. The U n i o n acknowledged these reasons and was then asked to .consider what I.C. would do i n s t e a d of a Rao on Nov. 5 t h . The P r e s i d e n t i n d i c a t e d t h a t the r e a s o n f o r the date of the present meeting was t h a t the U n i o n would thus have p l e n t y of time to oonslder what waa to be done. L i t t l e arose from the f l o o r on t h i s matter so that most p r o b a b l y , a a u s u a l , I.C. w i l l o f f i c i a l l y be a t H a r l i n g t o n f o r Guy Fawkes Day. Other business waa the e l e c t i o n of B a s i l Evana and A l s o F r a s e r t o the Entertainments Committee, and the s e l e c t i o n of 'Hags' S l a t e r s s an 'ERE, the c u s t o d i a n of Herbert's key. The attendance a t the meeting was about 250, whioh was small c o n s i d e r i n g the importance of the agenda. T h i s i s where the l o s s of the Gym beoomea most marked, since there i s now no o e n t r a l meeting-plaoe. P o s s i b l y a l s o Guildsmen and Miners are l o t h to go i n t o the R.C.S. | The tone of the meeting was very subdued, one almost might say tame f o r a Union meeting, remembering the i n f o r m a l i t y and blunt speaking i n the Gym. I t i s to be hoped that the Union w i l l keep the temper of i t s Meetings up to the o l d l i v e l y l e v e l , whioh does not mean, the wholes a l e s l i n g i n g of f i r e w o r k s , but does mean p a r t i c i p a t i o n , both i n wit and i n p l a i n speaking, from the f l o o r as w e l l as from the C h a i r .

The U n i o n e x t e n d s i t s deep sympathy t o t h e b e r e a v e d f a m i l y , Lady H i l l , ,'Sfudenoe and Phoebe Ann, who many o f u s know so w e l l .
