REVIEW
There are f o u r very good reasons f o r buying t h i s term's "Phoenix". They are four photographic reproductions i n the centre, showing past and future aspects of P r i n c e Consort Road and i t s vicinity. These four are f a r more eloquent and i n t e r e s t i n g than the accompanying a r t i c l e , and l i k e l y to beoo.ue c l a s s i c s l a t e r on.
WERNER
The Chairman of the S o c i a l Clubs Committee i s a complex character. Tony Werner received h i s e a r l y f i g h t i n g t r a i n i n g at a prep school c o n t a i n i n g two f i g h t i n g headmasters, one of whom was l a t e r awarded £9,000 damages against the other. Tony, being head boy of one h a l f of the school, which h a l f not s p e c i f i e d , was w e l l to the f o r e i n the b a t t l e . Prom there he went to B r a d f i e l d where a f t e r some study he took Higher 3chool Oert i n Modern Languages and History. His c h i e f claims to d i s t i n c t i o n at school were an appearance on T. V. as a s l a v e , the founding a Conservative Society and the somewhat e c c e n t r i c pastime of t r e e - f e l l i n g . From B r a d f i e l d Tony went to the Borbonne and studied there i n the F a c u l t y of Science f o r nine months. The c l a s s c o n s i s t e d of 200 men and 200 young l a d i e s , an opportunity f o r experience of which he was not slow to a v a i l himself. Again he founded a Conservative S o c i e t y and having . narrowly escaped a r r e s t he was h a i l e d to the Surete to account f o r subversive p o l i t i c a l a c t i v i t i e s . A f t e r a short time he returned to England, though he was not a c t u a l l y deported. He then studied elementary science and obtained a School C e r t i f i c a t e i n '-'hemistry at the t h i r d attempt. For part time employment he worked as storeman f o r a f i r m of s t r a t e g i c metal dealers and was offered job back-stage at a Hammersmith music hall.i'he nature of h i s d u t i e s i n t h i s post have never been explained. Tony came .to I.C. i n October '52 and took part i n the l a s t intermediate course i n the college . During that year he became Barman & President of Connaught H a l l . In '53-'54 he was President of the P o l i t i c a l S o c i e t y and then t h i s session he became Chairman of the S o c i a l Clubs Committee. Once again he founded a Conservative Society and now serves as i t s Treasurer. He has f o r the past two years been a member of the executive of L.D.C.A., and i s also E d i t o r of the R.S.M. Journal. a
I t ,ias been noted that Tony i s of a complex nature. His tastes, are r a t h e r more c a t h o l i c than the average students. ^ ' h l serves both himself and us f u l l w e l l i n h i s a d m i n i s t r a t i o n of the S o c i a l Clubs. Being h a l f Scandanavian and h a l f I r i s h Tony has an lnborne love of t r a v e l , he has ranged over most of Europe and v i s i t e d Hong Kong, Siam and Greenland. When not otherwise engaged he r e s i d e s i n Nice. He speaks French, Scandanavian languages and E n g l i s h o c c a s i o n a l l y . When i n London he l i v e s i n a f l a t that d e f i e s d e s c r i p t i o n , l i t t l e of i t being v i s i b l e due to the mass of books, papers, crockery, sundry equipment and b o t t l e s that covers everything. Tony has i n t e r e s t i n g t a s t e s i n wine, women and song. As f o r the f i r s t he i s a confirmed imbiber of cognac, i n the d i r e c t i o n of the second h i s a c t i v i t i e s must be subversive since there i s l i t t l e to be seen of them around oollege. He i s reputed to have a tendency towards brunettes w i t h blue eyes, though at present i s showing a passing fancy f o r blondes. As f o r song, h i s t a s t e i s Slav music. Ho a l s o c o l l e c t s stamps and t r a c t i o n engines. His p r i n c i p a l d i s l i k e i s having to a r r i v e i n time f o r 9.30 l e c t u r e s , a f o i b l e he shares with other M l s l a g Geologists. 8
But "Phoenix" i s a l i t e r a r y p u b l i c a t i o n , and on that count i t f a i l s miserably t h i s time. There are seven a r t i c l e s which one presumes represent the best l i t e r a r y t a l e n t i n I.C. today, and not more than two of them are worth a c r i t i c ' s : p r a i s e . Peter Howe t a l k s f o n d l y , and i n that c h a r a c t e r i s t i c oasual tone of h i s , about treins on the Continent, and manages to be i n t e r e s t i n g without being e f f u sive. Vers Atkinson r e l a t e s two amusing episodes about The Rozzers, but i s p l a i n l y under a s t r a i n to l i n k up the t.vo somehow. The only poem, "December", has obviously been w r i t t e n i n that month, and of course has no rhyme or form. Three a r t i c l e s have been w r i t t e n oy obvious enthusiasts . Tne one on g l i d i n g was tile only one to arouse any r e a l i n t e r e s t i n me, altnough I have seen a g l i d e r only once i n my l i f e . One uoout rowing i n a summer race t r i e s v a i n l y to .j&ite i t sound h e r o i c , and could only arouse a f a i n t boredom. The two authors use pseudonyms. The t h i r d a r t i c l e i s i n i t i a l l e d , and i s a p l a i n , a l u e i t j e l l w r i t t e n account of a Deep oea Cruise.
'The D a i l y Round by "One of tne uragons" and 'You, Too, Can '}e A W i l l i n g Customer' by ii.C.Kale are both l i g n t n e a r t e d i n a laboured s o r t of way. The l a t t e r f u r t h e r s u f f e r s from i n d i f f e r e n t proofreading. 1
"A Mining Juggernaut" by Ivingdon i s a f o r t h r i g h t account of the mines' t r a c t i o n engine's h i s t o r y and prospects. I could not, however, agree w i t h some philosopny about mascots which he has put forward i n the opening paragraph. Tne other reviews, t a k i n g ten out of the f o r t y pages, are uniformly d u l l . There i s a sincere t r i b u t e to the memory of S i r Roderic H i l l , w i t h a good photograph. The photographs are tne main value i n t h i s i s s u e . The r e s t i s j u s t g a r n i s h i n g . „ fl

I t has given us considerabl e p l e a s u r e to see the f a v o u r a b l e manner i n which the n a t i o n a l press has r e c e i v e d the N.U.S. r e p o r t on undergraduate grants . N.U.S. say the r i s e i n e s s e n t i a l expenditure f o r students r e s i d e n t i n London has been 14$ sinoe 1951, we would say i t was nearer 20$. We a l l know pers o n a l l y of genuine oases of d i s t r e s s caused by economic d i f f i c u l t i e s ; i n many i n s t a n c e s the only a c t i o n a student oan take i s to d e l i b e r a t e l y lower h i s standard of l i v i n g , when a l l t h a t i s needed i s an e x t r a £ 30 per annum. At the same time the M i n i s t r y of Education could place the County awards on a more l e v e l b a s i s . As students we are a l r e a d y a p r i v i l i g e d branoh of the community, but here there i s a genuine grievance, which could be supported at the h i g h e s t l e v e l .

A l i c e and her c o l o u r f u l f r i e n d s presided over the R.C.B. C a r n i v a l l a s t F r i d a y . The theme, being based on a l i t e r a r y masterpiece, Is a new and very p r a c t i c a l Idea, a welcome change away from the p r o v e r b i a l cowboys and Indians. The standard of scenery was extremely high and i t Is pleasing to note that there was an absence of wanton d e s t r u c t i o n during the evening. - Excluding of course the b r i c k s and snowballs which were f l y i n g across the tennis court between 2 and 5 a.m.! The scenes portrayed by the K.U.o's a r t i s t s are t a r too numerous to mentian but here i s an o u t l i n e : i n The queen's Palace (the ijnacK Bar j we saw the Hatter's Tea party, the i l l t h y Toves, the Lobster and the liryphon, the nalrus and h i s pal the Carpenter and various representations og the ueen of Hearts and her p l a y i n g card c o u r t i e r s . I t must be g l a r i n g l y obvious to the minority of Imperial College students who take an a c t i v e i n t e r est i n some sport that there has been a decline of a t h l e t i c prowess within the college . Gone are the days when F e l i x was publishin g with r e g u l a r i t y the l i s t of U.L. cups won by I.C. clubs. So fair t h i s season we have yet to record a s i n g l e cup and the future i s not p a r t i c u l a r l y overflowing with an abun-dance of cups ready to d r i f t through the portale of I.C. Let us examine a few d e t a i l s of our i n g l o r i o u s record. The college was struok a heavy blow between the eyes when the Rugby c l u b was beaten i n the 1 s t . round of the U.L. competition by U.C. The cup, which has been i n our possession f o r three years w i l l f i n d i t hard l i v i n g i n i t s new surroundings, and we hope that next year i t w i l l be returned to i t s permanent residence. The Hookey Club, whitfh at one time had a monopoly of the U.L.cup, have also f a l l e n viotims to U.C. The U.L. cross country championships were another opportunity f o r U.C. to give a demonstration of t h e i r s u p e r i o r i t y i n t h i s sport. I.C. can boast seoond hon-ours i n the U.L. championships, but t h i s f a l l s short of previous years when wo were regular holders of the cup. We are sure I.C. supporters were disappointed when the Soccer c l u b were beaten by the odd goal i n the s e m i - f i n a l by Goldsmiths'. This was our l a s t ohanoe of holding one of the winter oups. The Squash olub have reached the s e m i - f i n a l of the U.L. competition, but they have strong opponents In S t . Mary's, tha other s e m i - f i n a l i s t s . The Boxing club, making a welcome r e t u r n , put up a g a l l a n t e f f o r t i n the U.L. championships but were never expected to emerge as winners. With tha c o n t i n u e d support that they are g e t t i n g , they could win these championships neat year. And ro on to our remaining chances. Tha S a i l i n g olub cup seems to have oome to I.C. to s t a y , a stay l i k e l y to- continue. The Boat Olub a t l l l remains one of I.C. 'is strongest p o t e n t i a l i t i e s In sport, oooea- l o n a l l y r i s i n g to the heights of n a t i o n a l fans. Let i t be said now that every honour oomlng tha way of the Boat Club has been won by 'ahear' hard work, enthusiasm, and the n t r i o t t r a i n i n g programme Itn-posod upon them by the arduous natura of t h e i r sport. FJOiII wlshaei them a l l tha b a i t i n tha near future Head of the hiver. However, the faots are l a i d before ua, and wa must take our hate o f f to U.C, as the top college of sport i n the U n i v e r s i t y today. Suooeaa l a only a l i m i t e d quantity and bsoauce of t h i s wa cannot ba too harsh on our own sportsman who, having passed through a region or dominance ovar tha other aollagea have now to ba content with watching the luooaai of others. In a u n i v e r s i t y with a regular throughput of students, tha f l u c t u a t i o n s of u n i v e r s i t y aport ara wide and oan ohange r a p i d l y from yaar to year) and what one u n i v e r s i t y gains another l o t a s . Ovar tha post war years I.C. have had many good sportsman and i f the outflow of tha past two years has bean graat-er than the Inflow, than we must f i g h t harder to replace the l o s t onea by mora t r a i n i n g and a r e a r u i t -ment of those we fear are hiding t h e i r l i g h t s behind a brown bushel. I f ready made athletes are not belag supplied to our sports clubs then tjlMY. * t oreate some. Moreover, s k i l l doss not count f o r a l l that goes i n t o a v i c t o r y , let"? have plenty mora s p i r i t . n u

The 1st team have reached the f i n a l of tha Caribbean Cup competition, and must now meat Woolwich I , who are strong favourites f o r tha cup. In the s e m i - f i n a l , I.C. beat King's I 8 - 1 which was a u p r l s i n g l y one-sided i n view of the r e s u l t of the league matoh e a r l i e r t h i s season when Kings wen 6 - 4 . For I.C., games were won by Shoalb (3),Wilson (3),Amatya (2). Speolal mention must be made af K.aUteaib, a Pakistan i n t e r n a t i o n a l , who pulled o f f a magn i f i c e n t aohi«v*uen _ by winning tha B r i t i s h U n i v e r s i t i e s championship. Ha i a believed t a o-> the f i r s t I.C. player aver to t i n t o l a event.
RUGGER The f i r s t f i f t e e n has played extremely w e l l reoently. T h e i r baoks showed magnifioent form against London Springboks and the matoh was won 14-0. Palmer, B e l l and p o n t i n scored f i v e t r i e s . A s a t i s f a c t o r y revenge was gained over U.C. who wore defeated 3--0. A f i n e 40-yard penalty by Lewis decided the match. Probably t h e i r best performance of the season came l a s t Saturday, when before a l a r g e crowd at Richmond A t h l e t i c Ground they held Richmond V i k i n g s t o a score of 8-i. But f o r I n j u r i e s and the c l a i m s of U.L., I.C. might w e l l have brought o f f a s u r p r i s e win. T h i s i s the s o r t of performance whioh does muoh f o r the olub'a r e p u t a t i o n . The "a", being depleted by players' i n j u r i e s and promotions to the seoond XV, l o s t to Port of London A u t h o r i t y , a f t e r a valiant..but inexperienced game. Last Saturday they l o s t 9-0 to Old Haberdashers i n a very evenly matched game, enjoyed by a l l . The 2nd XV s u s t a i n e d a defeat from Bank of England. Dan's team hats shown a complete cont r a s t i n the l a s t two weeks. F i r s t , a oomplete shambles w i t h a mass of reserve s and o l d orooke ( i n o l u d i n g one who d i d not t u r n up u n t i l h a l f time) , they l o s t 5-3 to P.L.A. Then, d e s p i t e the C a r n i v a l , they r a n up a uoore of 39 againat Slough, i n b r i l l i a n t f a s h i o n . The B I X van 12 - 0 by brute force and ignorance*

On Saturday on a vary poor p l t e h tha l a t , XI drew w i t h Blrkbaok 4 - 4 , the forwards h i t everything except the goals and had they bean more accurate an easy v i c t o r y would have been obtained.
